Just seeing the trade now as I started watching the game after it ended and avoided spoilers.

Getting a high end pen arm could certainly have costed more so it's decent. I'm not the highest on Robberse because these pitching prospects who are more back end of the rotation potential guys more often than not turn out to be TJ Zeuch and Bowden Francis than actual back end starters. It still seems slightly more on the expensive end than I was expecting, and if you give the Cardinals arms they usually turn out to be good in a few years so we'll see.

Interesting roster decisions coming though. Mitch White being DFA similifies things. I assume they didn't want to give up on him after all the attempts to hold onto him but at some point it becomes too much. You can't have him sitting around for days, run a 6 man rotation and then not want to use him in spots like the 9th inning 5 run lead yesterday. It's just a wasted roster spot. He's been so bad maybe he clears but with teams shipping out arms at the deadline presumably someone bites.

6 man rotation until Romano is healthy and then maybe sending Manoah down again to bring Romano back works. They still have to open up spots for Ryu and Green. Presumably Pearson is 1. I assume Cabrera is another. Then September hits and you can bring 1 of them back.

He's missing Cabrera but Peasron is probably back to AAA when Green or Romano is activated and then Jackson I guess is unfortunately next.

That's a deep pen.

Edit: Somebody has to go to activate Ryu aswell

As of Tuesday, the roster increase to 28 with a 14 pitcher limit. They are currently at 12 without Hicks, Romano, or Ryu. Hicks will join the team tomorrow and for Ryu's start he can be activated without requiring another transaction.

So the issue becomes what happens when Roman is healthy and how they are going to approach the rotation for the rest of the season. Green will be another factor.

It’s hard to rank all these guys. Garcia hasn’t been him self but has a track record. Jackson has been very good, but has zero track record. Hicks is the hardest thrower in baseball, but does walk guys a bit. Cabrera sucked for the cards, but has been lights out in a short sample for the Jays. But I’ll take a crack at it. And we don’t know what we’ll get from Green but he used to be all-star level reliever.

1. Romano
2. Green
3. Hicks
4. Swanson
5. Mayza
6. Richards
7. Jackson
8. Garcia
9. Cabrera
10. Pearson
11. Cimber
12. Pop

Garcia will finish with a 2.25 ERA in July after a 2.16 mark in June. He had an awful start, but he's been himself for a while now.

I think the obvious bullpen when healthy will be Romano, Hicks, Swanson, Garcia, Richards, Green, and Mayza.

Jackson, Pearson, Cabrera, and Pop will be in Buffalo since they all have options.

That's such a strong pen with really good depth to fill in for injuries.

Nothin? Crap teams like KC and Oakland have no good bats for sale?

Hard to believe Jackson with his gaudy 700 ERA+ will be sent down. But I get why, just would be too bad to send down one of the most effective arms we have.

KC and Oakland have no good bats for sale. The two best bats on the market are probably Pham and Candelario. Maybe Teo as well. It isn't anything earth shattering and the prices will probably be way to high for the calibre of player you are getting.

Anyone have any interest in Mark Canha? Hasn't had a great season this year but his last couple were solid. Can play multiple positions.

I don't know, I think the Angels' best move was to get a huge haul for Ohtani. I get that they're in a unique spot because they're at risk of wasting two generational talents on the same team so there's added incentive to go for it, but with all of their injuries they're now at a point where they're just desperately trying to keep things afloat rather than really going for it.

At this point, the most likely scenario is that they spend a bunch of assets trying to push for the playoffs, don't make it, and lose Ohtani for nothing.

Agreed in a market that hugely is favouring the seller. We could have seen a haul like never before for a player the likes we have never seen before.

It was objectively the correct baseball call to sell Ohtani. I just don't think they made a baseball decision. Moreno fully intends on selling the team so what would he rather have? The money that Ohtani will bring him the last half of the season or prospects that will materialize after he has already sold the team. It sucks for the fans of the team that a shitty owner is going to mess up the future of the team and nobody will be able to be held accountable for it when he walks this winter.

Yimi Garcia Reaches Vesting Threshold, Guarantees 2024 Salary

By Mark Polishuk | July 30, 2023 at 6:11 pm CDT

Yimi Garcia’s appearance in the Blue Jays’ 3-2 loss to the Angels today marked the right-hander’s 49th game of the season, and his 110th game of his two seasons with Toronto. As a result, Garcia triggered a vesting option in his contract that now guarantees him a $6MM salary in 2024. The Jays had previously held a $5MM club option on Garcia for 2024, with a $1MM buyout.

The contract news provides some silver lining to an otherwise forgettable day for Garcia, as he allowed a two-run homer to Hunter Renfroe in the tenth inning that ended up being the game’s deciding run. It was a blemish on what has otherwise been a solid season for Garcia, who turns 33 in August. Garcia entered Sunday’s action with a 4.30 ERA over 44 innings, though a .369 BABIP may be responsible for that inflated ERA, as his SIERA is a far more impressive 3.01.
