Seems premature but if the slider is slidering like it should then you might as well use those bullets back in the majors now.

At least the Tigers are one of the more undisciplined teams in the league, but if he struggles the media and fans will be on it fast.
Considering he got destroyed by kids and then had one decent start at AA this seems like a terrible move rushing him back. I said in the other thread but he shouldn't have been back until after the all star break at the earliest. He should have had at least two good starts before coming back. I guess they hope he can get some confidence if he can beat a terrible Detroit team. My fear is if it goes poorly his confidence is going to really take a hit.

Seems like they are trying to ride his performance in AA to keep his confidence high

If he got blown out in his second AA start, he could go deeper into the darkness

Either way this is a risky, risky move by Atkins

It’s obviously risky but we don’t have the same data and info that they do. What we do know is he got 10Ks through 5 at AA, and hit 95 in his last inning of work. Those are two things he was incapable of accomplishing so far this year.

The complex start is irrelevant because he was probably just tossing stuff in the zone and trying to work on his release point.

Feels really, really rushed.

Give him one more start whether it’s AA or AAA and then call him up after the AS break if he looks good again.

Where do they go now if he gets mashed in this start?

It does feel rushed, but at least it's a soft landing spot with the crappy Tigers in a pitcher's park. Maybe they didn't want his first start to be against a tough NL West opponent after the all-star break

Good way to build his confidence I guess. But if he gets destroyed by the Tigers.......

Worst case scenario he gets mashed and Ryu probably comes up post AS break. Or Francis for a spot start or two to bridge to Ryu. Or they just eat it and let Manoah figure it out up here with his tinkered mechanics.

7 RBIs too. He's only 21 and likely will finish the year in AA.

I think his defense is very good as well. I know quite a few of us bitch about Mitch White Trade but I like what I am seeing from De Jesus.

Not to mention Frasso hasn’t been good recent either. Frasso gave up 3 ERs in his first 8 games. In his last 5 games he has given up 15 ERs. Positive for Frasso is he is still throwing a lot strikes, striking out guys but walk rate has gone up too. He might be hitting his wall as his innings climb.

Also interesting that the Dodgers are using Frasso as a bulk guy. I didn’t know that. He is pitching 4-5 innings an appearance. They likely do this because they may see him as a starter long term which I think is a mistake. He should be a backend relief all the way.

Mitch White has been good this year too.

Frasso is definitely a reliever at this point. He doesn't have the innings pitched to be stretched out much.

I didn't realize how well White has pitched. I had the check the numbers. I watch a lot of Jays games but I have missed his appearances.

White is only pitching in blowouts and the blowouts have not been in the Jays favour so you probably weren’t watching.

White’s also extended some blowouts himself. 7 of his 9 inherited runners have scored so he’s not really doing great in that regard, but when he starts a fresh inning he tends to do alright.

Baltimore and Tampa have had (relatively) easy first half schedules and are about to hit the gauntlet, while the opposite is true for us/New York.

Can a team actually be a 'second half' team? Jays have won ~53% of their games in the first half of the last two seasons and 61% in the second half. For as frustrating as this team has been so far they're basically playing at 2022 pace with a harder SOS than the first half of last season, and now they have a whole bunch of games against <.500 teams (18-5 so far this year). Think there's some optimism to be had...

Looking at the standings it isn't that difficult for the Jays to make the playoffs. There are three WC that will make it and those are three of Yankees, Orioles, Jays, and Rangers/Astros.

No AC Central team will make it, Angles and Mariners are out and the Red Sox are out as well I would think.

If Ryu or Manoah comes back, and is a decent middle-of-the-rotation, starter then the rotation is set. They also have depth with one of Manoah or Ryu or they can go with a 6 man rotation in the best-case scenario.

Chad Green will improve the bullpen and they could use another arm.

Jays definitely need a right-handed bat that mashes righties something they didn't get in the off-season.

They're also what, 45-28 against non Baltimore/Boston teams? Kind of amazing they're even in it despite the 1-12 against them. Have to imagine that will somehow balance in the 2nd half.

Yup - its funny since Boston being over/under .500 controls a lot of narratives. When they're over .500 like they are now the Jays are bad against good teams and absolutely destroy bad teams. When they are under the Jays are pretty much acceptable against both.

Are the Jays going to play at a 2023 Athletics level pace against the AL East all year? I doubt it.

The Angels are 4 games back on July 5th with their last chance to do something with Ohtani. They'll be buyers at the deadline and they'll be in there.

I agree with your core message but it's going to be a dogfight.

Well, yesterday Trout was put on the IL, and both Rendon and Ohtani left the game with injuries.

I don't think it's a slam dunk of them loading if any of those players are out long term - Rendon possibly excepted.

One would think by the 100 game mark Baltimore would hit a wall.
One of the fun parts about baseball is that a sample of half a season or so still isn't that meaningful in terms of luck. All of Baltimore's peripherals suggest they've been super lucky so far this year. Just because they haven't regressed too much yet doesn't mean we shouldn't still expect them to.

But also... Baltimore is 14-14 with a -14 run differential since the start of June.
