Scott Mitchell on Overdrive said Manoah showed up to camp at 320, 25 pounds heavier than his playing weight last year.

So the extra pounds plus the pitch clock may be what is hurting him. Maybe Anthony Recker was right.

I know he's a big guy, but for some reason I thought he was like 260lbs last year. The fact 320 is only 25 heavier than last year is a bit alarming. Also proves he can be massive and still effective if he gets a bit more under control.

Maybe it is more conditioning than I thought. Sabathia is was a big dude but I don’t think he got that heavy. Plus he didn’t have a pitch clock to deal with.

Sabathia definitely was in the 320s as far as his weight goes. CC also had an alcohol addiction which can definitely play into that as well.

That Manoah rookie league start was probably one of those tester games where the pitcher was told to only throw fastballs or repeatedly try some new pitch or some unusual plan like that. Regardless it's concerning for the player and the team. This unfortunately still fits the pattern of eventual arm surgery.

This was my thought after the initial hard cringe at the stat line. It's like those early spring training starts where everyone freaks out but then you find out that they weren't planning for him to pitch a "real" game and instead the point was just to work on fastball location or tinker with slider delivery to find the right amount of bite or whatnot.

it's concerning, but it's not panic-button concerning. Yet.
