If I had to rate who the SEC would want in from North Carolina I'd say in order UNC, NCSU, and then ECU. SEC wants in the state and I'm not sure that they care which of the three they get but I gotta think the edge is to UNC and I say this as an NCSU fan. While they all have similar football programs UNC just has a better athletics program.

The one advantage ECU has, and it's a sizeable one, is they aren't bound to the ACC. From everything I've heard and read it will be very difficult for either UNC or NCSU to leave the other in the ACC. Not only in terms of $ but the BOG will vote against separating the programs. I personally feel it would be to the advantage of both if they would separate themselves competitively. While all three would struggle to compete in football in the SEC the additional money and prestige would eventually launch them to be the premiere football program in the state.

The problem to me with UNC is that they aren't a great fit in that suddenly a *ton* of their Olympic sports would have to strike affiliate deals with other conferences for the sports the SEC doesn't sponsor. Offhand that means that the following sports would have to find new homes:

  • Men's and Women's Fencing
  • Men's and Women's Lacrosse
  • Men's Soccer
  • Wrestling
  • Field Hockey
  • Women's Rowing

IMO, the Big Ten's a better fit for UNC in this regards as all of these sports except fencing are sponsored by the Big Ten - additionally since the ACC doesn't sponsor Gymnastics, UNC could bring their Gymnastics program along for the ride.

I agree with you that UNC sees themselves as a bad fit not only for the reason you mention but cultural. They are "public ivy" even in the face of their scandals. Best case situation for NCSU is UNC be allowed to the big 10 and I think NCSU will be allowed to explore other options as well.

I was hoping that NCSU would use the UNC scandal to promote independence from them and therefor the ACC but no such luck.

I could see WVU in the SEC, but I think they would be a secondary target other than a prime one. It's kind of clear that the SEC would want to expand into VA and NC, as those are the only two southeastern states w/o SEC representation. VT has always been a rumored SEC target and if offered, I think they'd jump at the chance. I chose NCSU as the other one, because much like A&M was with UT, I could see them getting tired of being second fiddle to UNC. Breaking away and doing their own thing could be the best thing for NCSU (also $$$$). If the SEC can't get one or both of VT/NCSU, then I think WVU becomes a real target for them. I also think that OU could be in play with the SEC...but only if they're able to come alone as I don't think the SEC would take Okie State too, as that would prevent them from moving Mizzou to the West.

I think basketball alone is enough for the B1G to accept Kansas. That's a huge cash cow to add to the conference, they also give Nebraska and Iowa another regional rival.

I mean... you're not wrong re: the SEC wanting to get in to NC, but they just won't be able to if the ACC is going to remain a thing. ECU's always there but ECU is also a better fit for the Big 12 or the ACC then the SEC. They just don't have the budget for their AD. The B1G would like to get in to VA and NC as well but again it is what it is, it's why the talk of GT to the B1G instead has such traction.

Man, NCSU ain't leavin' the ACC. That's just some nonsense right there. NCSU, UNC, Duke and Wake Forest *are* the damned ACC.

Exactly.

Not sure about that if Washington and Baylor/WVU win out as well.

Though if Clemson loses to FSU like I expect them to you're probably right.

Well....when does that ever happen tho? We're always quick to say "if so and so goes undefeated" and then by the end we end up getting arguments about which one loss team should be in.

You're definitely correct, an undefeated Power 5 team will always trump a one loss non-Alabama team.

Speaking of West Virginia, they are looking pretty good right now.

Dave, which game would you say is going to be their toughest, at home vs. Oklahoma maybe? Or Baylor?. I expect them to win at home vs. Kansas and they should win on the road at Iowa State. Would it be fair to say that if they get by Oklahoma State next week, they pretty much control their own destiny?

I'm starting to think they're going to be one of the 4 playoff teams. I'm hoping they are.

OU for sure to me. I haven't been impressed with Okie State at all this year and Baylor still remains untested. Not sure Baylor gets past OU unfortunately otherwise WVU-Baylor has the potential to be a top 5 matchup at the end of the season.

Right. As it stands I don't really see anyone standing in Washington's way, though their game vs Utah is in SLC. But Michigan still has tOSU and (potentially) a rematch with Wisconsin to go; Clemson still has @FSU, vs Pitt, and the ACCCG to go; WVU still has @Okie State, @Texas, OU, and Baylor; and Baylor still has @Texas, @OU, TCU, and @WVU yet to go.

Don't be shocked if Washington State upsets Washington. The game is in Pullman and you know that the Cougars would love to spoil their in-state rivals chances at a playoff berth (should Washington be in that position).

We might have playoff chaos this year.
