Is the video working for you guys? I think I may be blocked out because of the whole Canadian thing.

In 2010,Marc Staal signed 2 days before training camp opened. He stayed away from the Rangers skates until he signed. At the US Olympic camp two weeks ago,Derek Stepan said he would be at camp. Stepan said the Rangers and his camp want him in training camp. Only a couple of days left.

When looking at the Stepan situation - two names come to mind. Couture and Duchene. But if we were get a bit nasty and throw the names Artem Anisimov and Brandon Dubinsky into the mix (not entirely comparable but...), we get something like:

Brandon Dubinsky
Drafted: round 2 #60 (2004)
Points 1st 3 seasons in NHL on ELC: 85
NHL Games played on ELC: 170
PPG Average: 0,50
Bridge contract $$: $1,85 M
Bridge contract $ at 2013/2014 value (cap $56.8 M vs $64.3 M): $2.094.278

Artem Anisimov
Drafted: round 2 #56 (2006)
Points 1st 3 season NHL: 72
NHL Games played on ELC: 165
PPG Average: 0,44
Bridge contract $ at 2013/2014 value (cap $64.3 M vs $64.3 M = same): $1,875,000

Derek Stepan
Drafted: round 2 #51 (2008)
Points 1st 3 seasons in NHL on ELC: 140
Games played: 212
PPG Average: 0,66
Bridge contract $$: ??

You gotta know Sather is looking at this and feeding it to Stepans agent monotonously...maybe through Gorton though. Dubinsky held out and as we know got nothing for it. It was part of the trade thing too... At least after holding out a 2nd time. Hope he enjoys Ohio...:naughty:

Stepan should sign now and get on the ice. Non arbitration gives no real negotiating rights. Sad but true. Old geezer got all the cards. I say $2,65 M for 2 years. Sather will hand out no more...

Duchene was the 3rd pick overall in 2009. Tavares was #1. The Islanders gave Tavares $33M over 6 years as a 2nd contract before Duchene signed the two years and $7M. Those two guys are tied at the hip. Colorado gave Duchene 5 years and $30M this summer for a 3rd contract which brings Duchene up to the Tavares level. His cap hit was $3.2M with the bonuses in his ELC which he completed at 21. Colorado couldn't give Duchene $5M over 2 years when Tavares has a $5.5M cap hit. He got $3.5M and it will be $6M starting in 14-15.

Sign the 2 year contract. Perform in those 2 years. 70-75 point player. Perform in the playoffs. Summer of 2015. Arbitration eligible. Stepan has the anvil. Sather has the hammer now. Stepan will have it next.

Still confident Stepan will sign the bridge deal, but with Phoenix overpaying for Boedker, I think it probably threw a bit of a wrench into things. $2.55M per for a player who has never sniffed Stepan's level of production? Yikes.

That was Boedker's 3rd contract. He is 2 years away from group III. Stepan is exiting entry level and is 4 years away from group III. PK Subban missed the first few games of the 48 game season because he wanted a long term contract. Bergevin was offering the Del Zotto($5.1M) deal to Subban. It ended up being $5.75M over 2 years. Management usually wins these things. Subban won the Norris and is in line for the mega payday. Subban will end up the real winner.

You're right. I totally missed that.

Stepan will get his money provided he can put up 60-70 point seasons in the next two seasons while providing a good two way game.

Sign the two year bridge deal for 5.5-6 million. The Rangers have a lot of UFA's and RFA's to deal with next summer. Once the identity and direction of the team starts to take shape afterwards, Stepan can get his money in Summer 2015. Richards won't be with the team, who knows if Brassard will be. He'll be our top line center. Derek just needs to be patient.

Boedker has 95 points in his career after being taken 8th overall in 2008. Can you imagine the reaction on this board if Boedker was a Rangers pick? 5 years pro and he has 95 points. 8th overall. Stepan had 96 in his first 2 seasons and there was one guy proposing the Rangers acquire Jussi Jokinen who was later waived as a replacement for Stepan.

I think Boedker is a good player, but he's just another guy that was forced to bite off more than he could chew with a team that was desperate for offense. He looked much better last season, but he should have gone back to junior after his draft year.

I'm hopeful that Stepan can continue to improve and solidify himself as the team's #1C moving forward.

AV is on The Team 1200 in Ottawa with Bruce Garrioch. Sounds like AV and Garrioch are good friends. Vigneault is talking about New York. It sounds like he will be living in Manhattan. He discussed the travel to the practice facility being a 25 mile drive for him. Has a Rangers coach ever lived in Manhattan? I don't think so. Usually the coaches live in Westchester County. Sounds like Marty Biron will be playing the same amount of games he played in 2011-12. Marty pointed out his record to him today. :) Can't win if you can't defend but you need to allow your offensive guys to make plays.

AV told Laura Behnke that he got a place here. Didn't realize he meant a few blocks away from the WABC studios.

Maybe he carpool with the players to Greenburgh.

Tuesday September 10th article posted tonight

Barring an unexpected seismic shift in contract talks that have gone nowhere all summer between the Rangers and Derek Stepan, the unsigned 24-year-old restricted free agent center will not report tomorrow for his physical on the first day of training camp.

Thus, Stepan, who has remained at his home in Wisconsin even as the Blueshirts have been holding organized, albeit informal, workouts and scrimmages at the club’s practice rink over the last week, would become the second Ranger in the hard-cap era to miss time because of a contract dispute. Brandon Dubinsky missed eight days in 2009.

Stepan is believed seeking a five- or six-year deal in the neighborhood of $5 million per while the Rangers are believed offering a two-year contract worth between $2.75-and-$3 million a year.

Colorado did hold the line on Duchene, the third-overall selection of 2009, who signed a two-year deal worth $3.5 million per coming out of Entry Level.

That’s probably the number that would get it done for Stepan sooner rather than later; maybe $3.25 million per. It’s more than the Rangers want to pay, but doing so eliminates the possibility of an October surprise offer sheet that could have devastating consequences.

http://nypost.com/2013/09/09/stepan-it-rangers-must-lock-up-young-forward-now/

Larry Brooks sees offer sheets in his dreams.

So much for being in camp.

People have to make sure to remember that this article is meant for tomorrow. Physicals aren't tomorrow, they're Wednesday. Confusing, at least for tonight. They still have one whole day to go. It's not like the contract itself is going to be complex. If either side starts to move at all, it could lead to a deal being done very quickly.

So maybe he'll miss the beginning of camp, maybe not. I'm still holding out hope here.
