Kadri and the Leafs have agreed on the term. 2 years. The money is the issue.

The Leafs are leakers.

The Rangers not so much.

Nobody really knows where the Stepan contract talks stand.

Subban missed the first 4 games and 8 days of the season before he said enough. He told Don Meehan to get a contract done with Montreal. Meehan wanted the long-term deal.

I think it's a mistake if Step doesn't get into camp tomorrow.

Sign the bridge and lets get started.

A mistake for whom, exactly? Both parties, IMO. Stepan gets off to a late start, and the Rangers don't have their #1 center in the first camp with a new coach.

At this point, I hope the 2 year bridge is agreed upon and they're just haggling over dollars. If Stepan and his agent are still fishing for a long term deal, this will go even longer.

Absolutely both parties.

But Step has no leverage. Sign and let's go.

people said the same thing about ROR... and look what he got. just saying. If Steps really wants to be a Ranger, he will be

All Stepan needs is the dumbest GM in the league to throw a half-assed offer sheet at him to make those situations anywhere near parallel.

Nobody really knows where the Stepan contract talks stand.

I think it comes down to these basic points:

1. An offer sheet could in principle be possible, but we might basically disregard this risk.

2. Stepan can only get whatever room we have on October 2 or whenever the season starts. Slats can't give him more.

3. We are not really low-balling Stepan. The offers Slats is in position to make are low, but not without precedent. Can Step really be pushing for a contract that would force Slats to reconstruct the lineup (ie like dump MDZ for a prospect?). To get a McD type of contract? That seems far fetched.

4. The bottom line, so far atleast, must be taht it seem likely that Stepan either (i) is just looking for a "final" offer -- under the current situation -- from Slats and the time for that final offer to be made has still not come (no party gains anything by moving now instead of Camp +/- a couple of days), (ii) is waiting for Slats to get rid of dead weight, like Boyle, and won't go much lower than Subban took for example.

I think its hard to speculate on if Step is looking for (i) or (ii) above. If we had like a mil more to offer him, he would probably get that mil instantly on a bridge contract. Stepan could probably force Slats to get him that money by dumping Boyle. We are in a tough spot to start the season without Stepan to say the least. Its alot of money to leave on the table. OTOH, he would get paid eventually after this contract. I don't think anyone really want to slap around your GM, neither player nor GM.

Even if Stepan holds out, there's little chance Sather will give him anything beyond a bridge deal. Staal and McDonagh are regarded amongst the best in the league at their positions; Stepan is not and will have to prove himself a bit more before the organization commits money and years to him.

At this point, I'm assuming he will hold out. Hopefully it's only for a few days like with Dubinsky and doesn't last beyond that.

Yesterday was the first day of Hockeycentral on Sportsnet and the FAN 590. They were discussing the cap for next season with the Leafs needing to re-sign Kessel and Celine Dion. Kyper speculated the cap could go up by $7M-$8M. Chris Botta is reporting the NHL will add $1B in 3 years. That's a cap of over $80M. I think it comes to $82M.

Dubinsky held out for 8 days.

That's about a 33% increase in revenue in 3 years. Wonder what they are planning. Would have to rather aggressive to achieve that kind of growth.

The outdoor games. The Winter Classic plus the Stadium series. There are 5 outdoor games besides the Winter Classic. Red Wings/Leafs. Coors Lite is the sponsor of the Stadium Series. Rangers/Devils. Rangers/Islanders. Kings/Ducks. Pitt/Chicago. Ottawa/Vancouver. Those games aren't going away. The NHL national TV contracts expire after this season. CBC and TSN. CBC had until August to get a new deal done before the NHL was allowed to talk to TSN or Sportsnet. The NHL wants big money for the Hockey Night In Canada package. With that comes the conference finals and Cup finals. CBC might not have enough money to retain that. The NHL will also add a Sunday night pacakge in Canada. Then there's the weekday game package on TSN. Sportsnet hasn't had a national TV contract for a while.

I hope Stepan and his agent realize they're out to lunch if they're looking for a McDonagh like contract. They have no leverage and the Rangers don't have the cap room, so why even push it? I'm hoping the bridge term has already been agreed upon and they're debating peanuts. It doesn't seem that way from the limited media reports, though... :(

Just sign the contract, Derek.

And to think if they dumped Beaver like everyone and their mother thought was the prudent business decision we probably wouldn't be discussing a Stepan hold out.

They should have dumped brad, got Step locked up and brought in some help with the $ saved.

God Help Brad Richards if he ***** the bed like last year.

Possibly 2 expansion teams as well.

Still un-*******-believable we kept Brad; just ridiculous. I see him sucking right out of the gate, and we put him in the press box/send him home for the rest of the year, all while being handicapped by his cap hit for the rest of the year...ugh

Do I want that to happen? Absolutely not; I'd love for him to return to his top, clutch form. But everything we saw from him last year in and in the playoffs--and I really think all this 'he's working out super hard to get back to top form' is just that, hype...

When you add more outdoor games you dilute the winter classic... This isn't to say that they won't gain rev... But it's not like adding 3 - 4 more Winter Classics will multiply the rev by that #.
