Nobody really knows where the Stepan contract talks stand.
I think it comes down to these basic points:
1. An offer sheet could in principle be possible, but we might basically disregard this risk.
2. Stepan can only get whatever room we have on October 2 or whenever the season starts. Slats can't give him more.
3. We are not really low-balling Stepan. The offers Slats is in position to make are low, but not without precedent. Can Step really be pushing for a contract that would force Slats to reconstruct the lineup (ie like dump MDZ for a prospect?). To get a McD type of contract? That seems far fetched.
4. The bottom line, so far atleast, must be taht it seem likely that Stepan either
(i) is just looking for a "final" offer -- under the current situation -- from Slats and the time for that final offer to be made has still not come (no party gains anything by moving now instead of Camp +/- a couple of days),
(ii) is waiting for Slats to get rid of dead weight, like Boyle, and won't go much lower than Subban took for example.
I think its hard to speculate on if Step is looking for (i) or (ii) above. If we had like a mil more to offer him, he would probably get that mil instantly on a bridge contract. Stepan could probably force Slats to get him that money by dumping Boyle. We are in a tough spot to start the season without Stepan to say the least. Its alot of money to leave on the table. OTOH, he would get paid eventually after this contract. I don't think anyone really want to slap around your GM, neither player nor GM.
