As negotiations on a new contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs threaten to keep the 22-year-old restricted free agent away from the start of training camp, fellow NHLer Logan Couture believes Kadri would be wise to follow his lead by signing a short-term deal now and looking to hit a home run later.

“I don’t know why he doesn’t just do a two-year deal,†Couture told sportsnet.ca on Thursday during the NHL’s player media tour. “Play and have a good two years like you know you can and then you’ll sign a nice deal after. You’ve just got to be confident that you’re going to have two good years.â€

One of the main sticking points between Kadri and the Leafs is believed to be the player’s desire to sign a long-term, big-money extension. The team would prefer a shorter bridge contract similar to the $5.75-million, two-year deal that Couture signed in San Jose in 2012.

That ended up working out well for the Sharks centre, who was rewarded with a $30-million, five-year extension earlier this summer. He said the negotiations between GM Doug Wilson and agent John Thornton on the most recent contract lasted just 20 minutes.

Derek Stepan

Did it look like Kreider was watching Hagelin like Torts asked?

Kreider shaved his head to play contrary to Hagelin rebel against Torts. That was right before he was sent back down to the whale. Hagelin is the problem. We got rid of the wrong guy.

Stepan had 18 goals and 44 points in 48 games for the Rangers in 2012-13 -- a pace that would have yielded 30 goals and 75 points over the course of a full season. He turned 23 in June and already has 140 points in 212 career NHL games.

Those numbers are almost identical to Mike Richards at the same age (Richards, now with the Los Angeles Kings, had 49 goals and 141 points in 211 games). Stepan's 0.66 points per game before his 23rd birthday places him just behind Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks (.71) and Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars (.72) among players who have completed exactly three NHL seasons before turning 23 since 2005-06.

Richards and Benn both signed long-term deals as second contracts worth $5.75 million and $5.25 million against the salary cap, respectively. Couture signed a "bridge deal," which has become a popular term in recent years. His pact was for two years at $2.875 million, and he will start a five-year, $30 million extension in 2014-15.

Couture signed that contract in August 2011 when the cap was also $64.3M.

Boedker signed for 2 yrs/2.55 per. Things become more obvious for Stepan by the hour.

Boedker was arbitration eligible but he didn't file. That guy was 8th pick overall in 2008. The guy has 95 points in 256 NHL games. .371 points per game. Its his 3rd NHL contract and it takes him up to group III. Benoit Pouliot has 124 points in 291 games. .426 points per game. Pouliot is making $1.3M. Hagelin was arbitration eligible and he filed. 2 years/$2.25M. 62 points in 112 games. .553 points per game.

PHX overpaid for Boedker. He had the best season of his NHL career in 2013. 26 points in 48 games. Pro-rated 44 points. Maybe they feel his best hockey is ahead of him. He turns 24 in December.

  • Sign Stepan for 2 years @ 2,9 bridge deal
  • Sign Vinny Prospal on a one year deal at $1,1 M + $1,1 M in deferable bonuses
  • Put Cally and Hagelin on LTIR to start The season
  • Waive Asham and Powe (providing veteran leadership to an awfully young team in Hartford)
  • Demote Johnsson
  • Promote one of Mashinter or Haley (for "toughness")
  • Let Miller/Kristo/Fast battle it out for a RW role whilst Cally is out
  • If Lindberg is ready in camp, which he very well might be, maybe something can be worked out with Pyatt or Boyle (ie ina trade)
When Cally and Hagelin return, causing some roster movement (trades or demotion) to be necessary to become cap compliable, then that is one deep team. Hopefully Big Macs development and Robocops presence on the bench will invigorate the necessary grit some people say we now lack. One of Mashinter/Haley will likely be around to battle the bad guys in heated matchups.
Chris Kreider needs to come out of the gates at full speed with a chip on his shoulder. He has a lot to prove. For the Ranger to succeed then Brad Richards obviously needs a bounce back year. Just on note, he is basically playing for his next contract assuming he is bought out after this year with the one remaining compliance buyout the Rangers still hold (as if he has $$$ worries anyways). Most of the team - up to 18 players!!!! - are in a vital contract year. Should be very interesting to follow how that develops as it could push players over the top. Time will tell...

Sounds about right. Only thing i differ in is Prospal. He puts us pretty close to the ceiling. Id rather see Pyatt or one of the kids get those minutes until cally/hags returns. Or even Asham/ haley and carry one spare F. Also, still may be some bargains in UFA that might offer more than Vinny and i loved Vinny when he was here. Well thought out lineup.

Looking again noticed cally/ hags on LITR giving us short term relief. However yhe question remains if these guys should miss the first 10 games. What if they're ready after 5 games? I think we'll need the Vinny cap space. That prob rules out the UFA opportunity.

Agreed. I meant more that the term is what is becoming obvious.

guess that would depend on Miller, because Hagelin is good defensively and Kreider has alot to be desired.

Miller didn't show a lot of great D, granted he was up his first time but still. Kreider right now is in a space where he really needs to earn. he showed nothing, but everyone fights over this constantly. Hagelin would be working 3-4x more with that line the way i see it.

yea and they have too many freaking Forwards right now. IF anything they want to shed bodies. They go Kristo and other kids like Fast, Miller, Lindberg to compete for spots to fill gaps

They may keep Asham and Powe to start the yr if a Cally goes on IR and they have extra cap space. Haley and Mashinter are not bad cheap spare or call up options

C- Stepan, Richards, Brassard, Moore
RW- Callhan, Kreider, Boyle, Dorsett
LW- Hagelin, Zuccarello, Pouliott, Pyatt

That's a lot of bodies already. We will see some on waivers or dealt

Hopefully we get some news on Stepan signing tomorrow or Tuesday. Wouldn't want him to miss any training camp.
