The reason being that this city loves the defensive side of sports. Look at the Eagles every year the fanbase bitches about not having a defense that is feared. Same logic applies to the Flyers and their defense.

Cavemen.
Because you only really hit people when playing defense in both hockey and football.

This cities caveman fans are completely obsessed with hitting and fighting. Nothing else matters.

Scoring is for fairies. Defense is for men.

And Carolina missed the playoffs 4 straight years under Peters and looked like crap.
They then traded 2 top ten picks (Lindholm and Hanifin) for Hamilton, and let him walk without compensation.
So of course, they put up 116 points this season.
Only three players drafted in the 1st rd by Carolina on the team, Svechnikov (2), Necas (12), Jarvis (13).

So they are a club who can realize how to not over value free agents? They also spotted talent to be plucked on the cheap (Tony De Angelo).

It's not necessarily about making a bad trade (if you even want to consider the Hamilton trade bad), it's more how you interact with the whole team building process. Something Chuck Fletcher doesn't know anything about.

Trotz is the perfect coach for this franchise right now. He'll keep the team entirely unwatchable (but more on purpose) and not good enough to make the playoffs while winning enough games to stay out of that lame-ass Bedard lottery. Ideal Fletcher hire.

Nolan Patrick? Look at the next 3 players who went after him. Then look at the rest of that top 10.

What caused Pittsburgh or the Blackhawks to win 3 cups? I'll answer for you Crosby/Malkin and Kane/Toews. The Lightning even have a #1 OA and a #2 OA. The Kings plucked Drew Doughty at #2. Alex Pietroangelo went right before Luke Schenn.

I don't even know what your arguing with that players. Are you saying there's guys that don't live up to draft status? No shit Sherlock Holmes.
Chicago missed the playoffs 9 times in a decade stretch.

Buffalo has missed the playoffs 11 straight seasons.

Is that how you want to spend the next decade?

The idea of “we’ll just be bad for a year or two” — even Pittsburgh went four straight years of under 30 wins before hitting the absolute jackpot with Crosby & Malkin.

Are we going to hit the jackpot, or just end up watching a really bad team for a decade?

Traded away Giroux, Ghost and Voracek with minimal return on balance. Risto's contract makes it a net loss.

Watching the playoffs I love seeing Raffl on the Dallas PP, Gudas playing great for the Cats, NAK playing well for Colorado, Bellemare still playing a checking role for the Bolts.

They let a lot of good players go to make room for schmucks like Hayes, JVR and Risto. And they wonder why the team stinks?

They need to fire Fletcher and let the new GM pick his coach. I know it's not going to happen until after next season, but we can always hope. 2022-23 is going to be a write off. #FireFletcherNOW #TankHard4Bedard

At least in some retrospect for Hextall he was quasi able to go for it. He thought Nolan Patrick was going to be a difference maker (didn't work).

Kevin Hayes got an albatross of a contract and signing Ristloanien was a doubling down on a poor thought process.

The upside to JVR is he's on his final year of a 5 year deal. I imagine they could eat 50% and he'd be tradeable even if it's nothing in return. 3.5 mil for a single year for a 25 goal scorer isn't a bad deal. Being able to walk away from a player after a year is valuable to some degree.

They won't trade him with retention because they need every bit of his cap space so they can give Kadri the next albatross contract after Gaudreau turns them down.

Certain people believe that making the playoffs and getting smoked is an accomplishment. Other people do not.

Well some people think last year's darling the Montreal Canadiens are a beacon of success. They also get to use the narrative that injuries are the result of their poor performance this year.

When was the last time this team actually won a playoff series by rolling over a team and i don't mean that 2019-2020 playoffs..... 2012? So a decade ago.

I'd say 2010 against Montreal. They only beat the Penguins in 2012 because Fleury shit down his leg worse than Bryz. 2011 we had the Leighton/Boucher/Bob shit show against the Sabres where they won in 7.

I wouldn't say they spotted DeAngelo's talent. They just chose to ignore the fact that he's a piece of shit. Not something they should be applauded for, imo.

Yeah, who wants to spend a decade being Chicago and terrible (then winning 3 cups in 6 years), when you could spend a decade being a bubble playoff team with no chance of improving for another decade.

I know what I'm choosing!

Carey Price was really bad in that 2010 series.

The one game he started and the other ~3 games he played?

You've got some super selective memory.

I don't even know why I bother because it'll likely be some canned response "Well i meant the other guy, it was a long time ago!" all while actively ignoring that the constructed argument in the beginning was nonsense.

Van City

This city and it’s fanbase deserves every single thing it gets.
Tocchet has been surprisingly refreshing, if a little boring, on TNT. He says the right things to make you think he could be a progressive coach in 2022.

Seems like a "do what I say, not what I do" situation, though...

Note: I did not read the article in your post.

Jordan Hall is on record saying he’s not even a Flyers fan. I can respect that actually because shoveling propaganda shit is that much easier when you don’t care.

Ovechkin just had 50 goals (again), Crosby paced for 100 points, the Bruins top line just had one of the best play-driving seasons on record. Everyone just expecting these guys to hit the skids in the next couple seasons are kidding themselves. The reality is that when they finally fall off, all of our "core" guys will be in their mid-30s themselves, with a more precipitous decline. The Flyers will be no closer to the playoffs in that time span. I'll bet that Kevin Hayes' contract ends right around or before any of those teams aren't in playoff races. Good and bad news, that's how long-term we're talking.

Tocchet will never move the needle. He's not exciting and if they are betting on name value alone, then they are going to be sorely f***ing disappointed.
