curious what would make you say this?
i find that in-game coaching in hockey is pretty much tapping a line on the shoulder and throwing them out there. no real strategy, IMO, other than line matching

if his skating is average (and his balance) and he's properly utilized....hoooboy. we're setting ourselves up for a summer of hurt this year.

This is categorically untrue. That topline has performed better with Wheeler on it than Laine on it, the other linemates being held equal. Last season

The timeout and 5F powerplay was new and different
I thought Maurice calling the time-out in the second period to give our guys a chance to rest before the 5 on 3 was huge. Then he puts 5 forwards out right after the time-out and Connor scores to tie the game up . I know alot of people hate Maurice but if that was a new coach that we hired in the off season everyone would be praising the shit out of him for those moves . Good game coach.
The lines were good, a lot of us figured 27-25-29 was going to be the second line, but 29 and 81 are great together.
Stas says he gave a speech in the intermission that rallied the guys. Interpret however, but some credit.
The 3-on-3 was effective as well. Could argue 29 just did his own thing there, though.
Agreed Helle was abysmal in the first but I saw a below-average game from Marky Mark. He’s lucky he had a horseshoe up his ass on that giveaway to Scheifele in the slot (near the end of the third when he went behind his net and turned it over).
I'm not so sure about this. I don't think they create chances the same as an elite player does with great passes, but I do think their cycle/ wall game causes breakdowns - and they usually funnel the puck to the net. If you had someone on that line with some size and hands they could get in front and convert some of those chances. I think KV might fit that bill.

I honestly very much doubt this. Lowry himself can in fact finish quite ok with garbage goal situations. I don’t think Vesalainen is at least any better with scoring from those kind of situations. Vesalainen would really need a respectable playmaker in his line so that his pretty good skating and shooting skills could be used properly. I would want to see Perreault in the same line with Vesalainen, if he gets his shot in the lineup.

That's cause Pionk was coming for him hard every chance. Loved seeing that. I'd imagine the two of them played with/ against each other in the US system

I'm not saying I think Niku's odds are great to develop into a top 4 D. I just think it's premature to complain that he should be removed from the lineup. I wouldn't judge anyone too harshly based on the first game of the year, especially with no preseason. Everyone is rusty.
The better Laine plays, the better it is for us. Either he gets rewarded with his contract, or we get an amazing haul in a trade.
Trouba played well his last year here and despite literally only wanting to go to one team, Chevy still managed to just absolutely bend the Rangers over in that trade.
Assuming Laine doesn’t limit his options, the return for him will be that much better.

I don't mind Perrault on the 4th line, they played well and had a chance or 2 late in the game and got the puck out of end quickly. Thompson lacks a step for sure but Lewis really helps out a lot with clearing attemps and both guys play good positional hockey.

Most games I watch him he's invisible then out nowhere he pulls an incredible move that leads to a goal. He's a player you rarely notice until he's on the scoreboard.
He is better at taking penalties, that is about it.
I agree the fourth line was pretty good. Loving Lewis’s game and Perreault wasn’t bad (other then the weak penalty call on him). Thompson is way better than I expected. Can’t be any worse than Shore.
I'd prefer Shore over Thompson, based on what I've seen so far...
I thought it was Pionk? Figuring if it were Connor I’m sure he’d have tried to pass..
as posted on twitter, the odds of an in-season trade between a US and Canadian team are slim. player would miss around 7 games due to COVID protocols
