Well yea, but EDM will play their 3rd game tomorrow and 4th on same day the Jets get to 2 games. Obviously with covid the scheduling is challenging, just annoying to start the season with 3 days off.

Yeah, but somebody had to have that happen. There will be a time where Van, Cal, Wpg, Tor, Ott, Mon will be paired off and Edm will sit for a few days. It is what it is.

There were some glimpses last night of nice coaching moves... but I've been bait and switched by Mo before - so let's see if the 4th line is still getting real minutes and our PP units are sharing time by game 10-15

My only real comment is that Laine should be the guy double shifting on the PP units - predictable or not, he makes space for everyone else

C> Play him with reasonable minutes, but give the clearly hot players at least as much ice time or preferably even a bit more.
Laine had 2 fewer shifts than Wheeler (in part because of Laine's penalty. That's 94 seconds. Laine took shifts that were 5 seconds shorter than Wheeler, on average (maybe a bit gassed considering 1st game and very aggressive). That's another 95 seconds. So the main difference between Laine and Wheeler was shift length, and Wheeler's shift lengths were only around 45 seconds.

Maybe, but Scheifele is more fit than Laine at this stage. I was glad that Laine still had good legs in OT. If he had played 20 minutes in regulation, I'm not sure he would have had that burst.

As it was like 5 am when I did watch the game, but somehow I think that on one occasion Laine was double-shifted on PP. Did I just fell asleep during the match or did that actually happen?

As Laine doesn't play PK, double-shifting him on PP should happen quite often IMO.

I think Laine finally took conditioning seriously this off-season... we will see.

Bit of a forgotten dream - but averaging ice time out to be 18, 18, 14, 10 over the season - sure would leave us in a great spot for the playoffs

FFS we should ALL be Wheeler fans, should we not?

God I haven't seen so much vitriol for a teams C and a PPG player on it's own forum. It's so sad.

Wheeler is a slow starter, he'll be fine. How easily people forget all of the fantastic play we've enjoyed from Blake over the past 10 years.

Yeah I don't even take half the posts here about Wheeler seriously anymore. It is clear some people have an obvious agenda and will look to pile on him any chance they get.

Good point. Does anyone believe that if was McDavid getting plastered into the boards from behind there wouldn't be a 3-5 game suspension?
the best part?
listening to that moron (yeah, i said it) Sawyer initially blame Connor on the cross check, saying he turned into it.

Eliminate the national anthem.
Eliminate Sawyer.

Laine was in the box for 2+ until a whistle then I think pomo ran through the 3rd and 4th because they hadn't seen the ice at the end of the 2nd due to pp

Iirc Laine’s penalty ended a few seconds into the third, and the other lines were cycled a couple of times in-between. Not complaining, just an observation for why the ice times looked like they did.

he's not THAT old and with current sports technology and training, i'd have thought his speed decline wouldn't have been this big.

34 is fairly old in hockey years. It happens to most players his age. Look around the league, older players like Ovie and Malkin are also a step slower these days.

He is just going to have to come up with ways to mitigate his speed loss

By all accounts Laine has always worked hard in the off season, I think it has just taken him this long to get some meat on that frame. His trainers have always said that the first few years are going to be for strength, so hopefully what we see now is a transition to skill and skating training.

Whatever it is I hope he can keep it going. This kind of dominance at 22 years old is a gift to our team.

Very true. He is also 6’5” and it takes a lot to move a frame that size. Aging players need to adjust how they can to remain at a high level of contribution.

He’s always been that power forward type, he might need to start evaluating his play.

Or he picks it up as the season progresses! What do I know :)

Remember when Laine had his dominant stretch in feb-march 17-18? The ice time stayed the same. It doesn't matter how the second line plays, Mo will play his 1st line:

Laine 15gp 18g 26pts 16:23
Ehlers 15gp 6g 15pts 15:15

Having a 2nd center other than Eakin/other scraps and fixing the ice time when it’s well deserved could go a long way in keeping Laine me thinks.

I also think he wants to take on a leadership role with how he conducted himself on the ice after the GWG. I think it’s time to give him what he wants.

I agree about Wheeler not being out on the 3 on 3 but not Scheifele, he's our best center. Scheifele, Laine to start would be better at least until Wheeler hopefully gets some legs back.
I'd rather start with Connor+ Laine. I realize no center, but Chief isn't a draw master himself. I love the chemistry developing between Connor & Laine and think the could be absolutely lethal together, both in regulation and OT. I hope PMO sticks with it in regards to that duo.

I agree but I think just starting to turn the reins over to some of the young guys is the way to go. Not a Big Bang, but even out ice time and responsibility in big situations.
