FFS we should ALL be Wheeler fans, should we not?

God I haven't seen so much vitriol for a teams C and a PPG player on it's own forum. It's so sad.

Wheeler is a slow starter, he'll be fine. How easily people forget all of the fantastic play we've enjoyed from Blake over the past 10 years.
The divide these Laine fans create is toxic

He was in the penalty box for almost 5 minutes, due to the 4-minute penalty he received at the end of the second period. This meant he not only missed the powerplay, he missed about 2-3 other shifts. Wheeler and Scheifele also started the OT, and got another 50 seconds of ice time, where Laine scored early on his shift.
It’s true that he after all he was in the penalty box for four minutes. But the maximum time he could have played from that is half of it or probably less than that. So ok, lets then think that without his penalties his ice time would have been a bit over 18 minutes, just like Connor had in fact. It would be looking at least a bit better, but there is still a big difference.

I think that Maurice is having endless love with Wheeler, when he gets that kind of ice-time with the kind of play he showed last night. Just as another example, Ehlers was supposedly playing on the same line with Wheeler. Still he had only a bit over 17 minutes of ice time while Wheeler had a bit over 21 minutes.

I know people like to rag on Niku, and he certainly has his defensive warts, but I really want to see him get a solid run before we give up on him. Push him into the offensive zone, some PP2 time would be nice. If he fails, he fails, but there is a lot to like about his offensive skills and I'd love to see what he can do with an opportunity where he is allowed to fail a few times before he is benched.

PP2 FOR niku would be nice

The objective of overtime is to score / win.

Since 2017/18, the Jets have the 6th best OT/SO record in the NHL. (TB is in a class of their own).

Maurice does Maurice things like putting Lucic out to start OT, which handicaps us in OT.

Did I say Lucic, I meant our guy that skates like Lucic. What's his name again? Oh yea, Wheeler.

Yeah I'm not worried about Wheeler, he'll get it together.

Here's a thought though, maybe the powerplay should run through Laine instead of Wheeler? A lot of people talk about how nobody respects Wheeler's shot so it's easier to defend when he has the puck on the powerplay. Laine's shot is very respected and he can pass. Also Connor getting off that shot on a pass that hard was no fluke, I watched Roslovic dish to him that hard constantly on the Moose and he hits that one timer very often. I really wouldn't mind seeing Wheeler and Connor switch spots on the powerplay. Wheeler can do some behind the net dishes and we can have shooting threats in Connor, Laine, and Scheifele. I'd miss Connor's hands in tight but I think that could be a good look.

Also can Scheifele stop being the one to break in on the powerplay? He's awful at it.

By the end of the game, Morrissey and Pionk were by far our best D...

Forbort's only good play was throwing himself into the goal to save himself from being the goat

Still want DeMelo back in the lineup asap
Disagree. Forbert was solid. Simple, effective play, didn't run around a lot, purposeful, appropriate physicality. I think he was just what this D needs. Everyone wants to sign the big name superstar defenseman but that is complicated for so many reasons. This D needs players that can calm things down in our zone, turn over pucks and get our forwards headed in the right direction, and Forbert did that, even if he didn't do it in a flashy or spectacular manner.

I'm feeling very good about this D corps. They won't be top 3 in the league, but with our forwards and Helle, we don't need that.

QQ: For a player who is critically important to the Jets success, who is historically a slow starter, is a point per game player and the captain of our team, how do you think you get him going?

A> Don't give him minutes
B> Give him minutes and allow him to build his confidence and get his timing back

JMO was good.

Hopefully he can keep it up.

Jets don't need him to be offensive dynamo.

Just get the puck to the forwards and let them work their magic.

Yeah. But where he also shines is jumping into holes in the ozone and getting his shot away quickly. I think we see more of that with DeMelo. It just adds another wrinkle to our attack.

I totally agree! As someone who has been very cautious with his optimism concerning Niku, and someone who has been critical of his play, I really liked parts of his game last night. I'd like to see him get enough games to where he's not worried about getting benched/ scratched if he makes a mistake to see if he can improve his defensive work and build on his offensive skillset. At the very least, maybe we can develop him to the point where he's not just a lost asset.

I actually thought Brighteyes had some really nifty entries on the PP last night, especially considering the wall of Flames he was encountering.

Hey, just because a guy is top ten in scoring over the past three years and is coming off a “horrible” game where he scored a point and was 75% xG and wasn’t on the ice for a single high danger chance against doesn’t mean he doesn’t suck.

Iirc it wasn’t until 5 mins+ into the third period when the second line had their first shift, so for some reason they skipped one of their shifts.

I thought they were benched for a while. So that’s probably why the ice time is what it was.
Laine was in the box for 2+ until a whistle then I think pomo ran through the 3rd and 4th because they hadn't seen the ice at the end of the 2nd due to pp

I mean, you can't argue with that logic :laugh::laugh:

The bad first period probably skewed my view - we started cycling a lot more after that

I’m definitely not writing anyone off yet - I’d rather see Heinola with Beaulieu when the dust clears and demelo back with Jmo

After this game it makes even more sense:

Reunite Ehlers-Scheifele-Laine (reap reward)
Connor-Stastny-Wheeler - KC likes playing with Wheeler and his explosiveness can help combat Wheeler's sluggishness
I would keep Connor and Laine together. They seem to find each other all over the ice and have some really good chemistry developing.

I think you can be critical of his play last night and still acknowledge that he will likely get better once he gets up to speed.

I also think you can be critical of the coach playing him 20 plus minutes when he's not going while the teams most dynamic player on the day got significantly less in terms of ice time.

Its not a big deal to me as its one game but I think Wheeler at age 34 is likely not able to handle as heavy of a load as in past years. I think 17 to 18 minutes is likely his sweet spot going forward and we have the winger depth that we can afford to play hi. In that minute range.
