Some contracts do give the player the ability to make a list of teams where they don't want to play, I can only assume that that's the "some control" you're referring to. You seem to be under the impression that that is how JT's contract is set up so let me help you out here. Are you listening?

You're wrong. I hope that helps.

Are you high? I don't recall posting any math on this subject so what are you babbling about?

Haha I feel your pain. Walking that line between getting infracted or not isn't easy, the line is blurry and seems to shift from time to time.
And therein lies your problem. Claiming that it is accurate that Marner is 2mm overpaid because Rantanen is his comparable when the difference is actually 1.6mm is brutally sloppy or dumb

Guys let’s be honest, if any other team in the league lost in the first round six straight times with practically the same management, coaching and players, and seemingly refuse to make any major changes to get over the hump, we’d all be rightfully clowning them. Yet with the Leafs it’s always the same excuses.
"yeah, but they put up 116 points last season"

This will be Dubas' final year as GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It might be. Either that or the following year or the year after that. And so on.

Dubas sucks and has taken a ten year window to compete for a cup and now we are looking at it slam shut next year. No amount of white washing the past will work on me or other knowledgable fans.
As a knowlable fan, people would agree with me. If they don't, by definition, they are not knowlable fans.

Didn’t everyone complain about last years moves when we got Kampf, Kase, and Bunting and say we were going to miss the playoffs?

You mean the guy I was responding whi said there was.no major changes?
For some people, major changes are trading one of the big four. Unfortunately not everybody agrees with what you and I consider to be major changes, and that’s their problem.

The thing about the roster, line 1 is set. Line 2 needs a bigger body that will be able to play with JT, whether it's a C or LW.

3rd & 4th lines were useless in the playoffs, Dubas is clearly focusing on them by adding a little more desire. I can see Kerfoot going since he's tiny and his game doesn't translate too well for tougher spring hockey.

D is one move away from being set, you need to trade Holl/Muzz and bring in a solid piece with snarl.

Goaltending? God help us all

His entire philosophy is flawed. Have 4 guys take up majority of the cap and round out the rest of the roster with fluff plugs
No matter what he does, this will be Dubas' kryptonite...well that and the fact that the cap has been stagnant for 3 years.

He tried to prove how smart he was by tying half the cap on 4 guys that had never won anything. He got bent over in every single negotiation and now he's left to fix the rest of the roster with under $5M. He's the greatest dumpster diving GM of all time

Gio has some insane genetics. I swear internally he's younger than brodie and muzzin. Call me crazy but I have no concerns about Gio's health for next season.

If he trimmed those greys and had hair he'd look 29
Was more thinking 2-3 years down the road as opposed to next season.

Which is generally always the case with league minimum depth players - that's why they are available for league minimum.

If they don't work, they get moved on the next summer - which, again, comes back to my original point: why are we freaking out about 0 risk signings ?

Because we need more than league min players to put us over the top and all we’re getting are league min players or overpaid reclamation projects with a much larger chance to bust than boom.

Agreed.

But signing the depth guys doesn't preclude you from getting guys that move the needle, and the roster is far from finished - the RFA situation at the very least, guarantees that some moves will have to be made.

I know everyone's anxious, and I get it. But training camp is still a long way away yet. I'm 100% convinced that this isn't the roster the Leafs go into opening night with.

Chicago did that when they were winning. The problem isn't four guys eating up the majority of the cap space, it is the four guys who are eating up that space. If we had the Chicago four in their primes eating up that space nobody would be complaining. The problem is the Leafs have the wrong four players eating up that money.

I do not like Dubas and cannot wait for him to be gone, but we have to be fair here and you've brought up a good point. When he signed those deals nobody could have predicted the cap remaining stagnant like that. It was expected to rise, and would have had the pandemic not hit, so he expected to have more money to fill out the roster. As much as I dislike him, we have to take this into account.

You get what you paid for.

The bargain basement bin is just that.

But according to some, with some arcane statistical regression, it was a bargain, and the team is an inch closer to planning the parade.

This act has gone stale already.

Shanahan, Dubas, Keefe, they are still there because of the ass kissing.

They are not there because of their hockey acumen.

Shanahan fired two coaches, each who had won Stanley Cups coaching, yet Shanahan never even saw this team win a series in the playoffs. The irony is that the firing of the coaches, was not even due to them not winning a playoff series.

It won't get any better. Moe Larry and Curly have done all they could.

Not to mention that half cap only occupies 2 positions. When in trouble you can throw Nylander with Matthews/Marner I guess but little else. There’s nobody below that and D + G is left with “gamble”. Last year gamble to this year gamble to whatever.
At least balance half the cap.
You have 4 shiny tires and no car.

Ilya Lyabushkin was very good for the Leafs. He was different then the other dmen we have, basically the only tough gritty guy back there, Muzzin is washed up. In a limited time, he adjusted very well, Dubas let him walk and he only cost 2.5 million? Another head scratching move by Dubas. He forced his own hand by over paying the top 4 guys.....but he can keep his job....?

Add Rielly and we got 5 players now taking 58% of the cap.

Dubas could never have predicted the flat cap due to a pandemic so perhaps it could have worked when the cap rose, however it is his decision to refuse to pivot in 2020,2021 and 2022 which will/might be his Waterloo.

The gap between the have and have-nots increases every year as a result of expiring contract becoming too expensive to retain so cheaper replacements need to be found.

The problem though is its that have-nots that get evaluated and blamed on playoff production or lack their of when their job is checking and grinding and PKing.

When it comes to scoring and winning and carrying the team in the playoffs its really down to 4 highly paid forwards.

Those keeping score at home its 0-4 in playoff round #1 results. In baseball its 3 strikes and you're out.
