@CHRDANHUTCH

IIRC, you asked a few weeks ago about construction at the Belmont racetrack. A friend there yesterday told me from his vantage point the ongoing construction was far enough from the hockey arena not to cause any conflict.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Columbus Day: Santa Anita is racing this Holiday Monday. It will be dark on Friday, a rare Friday night in southern Cal without racing.
  • Race 6: Fort Bragg (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) was DQ'd from victory for Practical Move (Drayden Van Dyke/Tim Yakteen). The big news here is a Bob Baffert horse was DQ'd in California. That doesn't happen often. But the horse drifted.

Belterra (Ohio):
  • Closing Day: The Cincinnati track began its meet April 28.
  • Leading Jockey: John McKee with 97 wins. Perry Ouzts, the 68-year-old sensation who is 6th all-time in victories in North America, finished second best with 90 victories. His 52,710 mounts is the second highest total, trailing Russell Baze. If he is to break the record, it could come in two years and perhaps after his 70th birthday. What a story.
  • Leading Trainer: Larry Smith was the runaway winner with 41 victories.
Ohio racing:
  • Thistledown (Cleveland area) ends its meet October 14.
  • Mahoning Valley (Youngstown area) opens October 22 and runs through the end of the calendar year.

Parx (PA):
  • Jamie Ness sent out eight horses and six returned with victories. He is the 18th all-time winningest trainer in North America history.
  • Ruben Silvera rode four winners on board five mounts. He was 3-for-4 for Jamie Ness.
Horseshoe Indianapolis (IN):
  • Gage Holmes, in her first full year of riding, won consecutive races. The 26-year-old graduated Penn State University.
Keeneland (KY):
  • Race 8: The $1 exacta paid $44.44. Kentucky tracks have been paying out on the cent this year which aids the handicapper but that is the first time I have seen a unique number such as that posted.
  • Race 6: Beautifulness (Luis Saez/Eddie Kenneally), an Uncle Mo filly, debuted to a 21-to-1 win. It is not often that Saez has a chance to bring home bombs like that.

FAR HILLS (NJ) -- STEEPLECHASE
1665623268351.png

The biggest steeplechase event in America will be held Saturday at Far Hills, NJ. The 101st edition is known to be a haven for the sport's top equine athletes and the associated tailgating has been equaled to a college football gameday.
  • Borough: Somerset County, N.J.,
  • Highlight: $250,000 Grand National Steeplechase (NSA-G1).
  • Expected attendance: Between 25,000-40,000.
  • TV: "America's Day at the Races" as part of NYRA's show on:
  • FS1 12:30 - 2:30pm
  • FS2 2:30 - 5:30pm

Here is the card: https://nationalsteeplechase.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/FarHills-Overnight-MonEntries1.pdf

  • Jamie Ness is 12 7-1-0 the past two days.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco had a very salient 7 2-5-0 mark. Placing five times on a card is rather difficult for good or bad,
  • Chad Brown sent out two horses and both won.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jeiron Barbosa is my leading candidate for Apprentice Jockey of the Year and today he won five times (including once at Charles Town) and more noteworthy four straight at Laurel.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: The winner was sent off at odds of 1-to-4. Is that because the Kentucky tracks are paying off to the cent? The only other track that I have seen use such odds is Finger Lakes (NY).
  • Race 7: Extra Anejo (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen), a $1.3 million purchase, is already getting Kentucky Derby chatter after a maiden win today by nearly 10 lengths. Asmussen has never won a Kentucky Derby despite nearly 10,000 career wins. The eyes of the racing world were on this race today.

  • Chalk: Low returns today with favorites winning six of ten races.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Weather: Racing was removed from the turf for the entire card. Initially the 8 remained on grass but an announcement prior to the first was a change of surfaces.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Russells: The husband-wife, jockey-trainer tandem of Sheldon + Brittany Russell teamed twice and won both times.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Around the Sun (Martin Garcia/Rusty Arnold) was the lone first-time starter in the race and he prevailed at 15-to-1.
  • Race 9: Highland Chief (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Sycamore Stakes. The exact odds were 6.66-to-1. Yikes. Those new on-the-penny odds can be rather attention-grabbing.

  • Steve Asmussen is 77 wins shy of 10,000.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: Skims (John Velazquez/Shug McGaughey) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Sands Point. Skims was out for the 9th time and though an unspectacular record, is 2-for-2 on the Big A turf.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Gina Romantica (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $600,000 QEII Challenge Cup. The daughter to Into Mischief won for the 4th time in seven starts. She was the higher of two Brown horses, the other McKulick (Irad Ortiz, Jr.) placed.

  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid $88,000+.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 9: Hazelbrook (Jason Hoyte/Lorne Richards) was sent off the favorite and won the Grade 3 $150,000 Ontario Fashion Stakes. The small-stable trainer is striking at a significant 38% clip this year and had a rare graded stakes win.
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 was nailed for over $136,000. Bombers topped tickets as the $1 exacta was $660 and the $.20 tri was hit for over $1,000.
Ascot (England):
  • Baaeed (Jim Crowley/William Haggas) failed to finish a perfect 11-for-11 after finishing fourth in his career finale. Bay Bridge (Richard Kingscote/Sir Michael Stoute) won the QIPCO Champion Stakes.

  • Todd Pletcher's ever-productive barn had three maiden winners and two were first-time starters. Two winners at Keeneland followed a bomb in the Aqueduct opener. Pletcher is the all-time leading trainer with over $444 million earned.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Calycanthus (Dylan Davis/Todd Pletcher) wired the field at 30-to-1 to win the opener. The English Channel colt paid $62 however that seemed more fulfilling than the low-ball $81.75 $1 exacta.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: 8-1 and 6-1 topped a field of five and the $1 exacta of $58.50 seemed larger than the opener at Aqueduct.
  • Race 8: Anileate (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) was coming off a 13-month layoff but enjoyed the rest. That is usually a good sign for the trainer's ability and in this case a former Brad Cox runner in New York.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas, arguably the top local rider the past few years, won four times.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Luis Saez had eight mounts but his lone wins were two first time starters for Todd Pletcher.
  • Race 8: Julie Shining (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher), a full sister to Malathaat, overtook then destroyed rivals in her debut. The daughter to Curlin wants to run and run long. Keep an eye on her.

Horseshoe Indianapolis (Indiana):
  • Race 7: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $5,000.
  • Rade 8: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $34,000.
Thursday, October 20, 2022

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • John Rigattieri is a New England legend and though his stable has been reduced in his advanced years, he is still producing victors. Today, he sent out two horses and both won. He is 8 5-1-1 this month! He is 26% in 2022 and could finish with his highest mark since 2004. He has been training since the 1960s.
  • Race 2 Charlotte Webley (Melissa Iorio/Michael Simmonds) gave the jockey her first career win with her fourthstarter.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Chardonnay (Jeiron Barbosa/Michael Stidham) was the recipient of an energetic and furious ride by the 19-year-old rider who had another awesome day. Barbosa went 7 3-1-1. He added a win at Charles Town tonight. He is my top candidate for Apprentice Jockey of the Year. Currently, he possesses a 5-pound bug. Watch the 11 and the effort by the jock. Sensational!

  • Race 1: A top personal suggested wagering angle is a lone first-time starter. Today, a 30-to-1 took the lead but drifted in the stretch and eventually settled for third and paid $10.60. Not a bad effort. Lone first-time starters with prices can offer high value.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Bombs: Staggering payouts in the last third of the card today. Keeneland has among the most exceptional equine athletes and horse racing royalty is found throughout but today was one for the successful handicappers.
  • Race 9: What a way to end a scrutinized bottom third of a card. A dead-heat between Pure Pauline (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) and Grand Entrance (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher). Two Pletcher starters finish in a dead-heat. That is among the rarest of rarities but it gets odder: both fillies were bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and share bloodlines. There is only one known dead-heat involving the same tra1iner this year and that was Jeff Runco in West Virginia. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $53,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $107,000.

PHOTO FINISH OF A DEAD HEAT
1666316647084.png
1666316554290.png
  • Race 8: Trademark (Martin Garcia/Victoria Oliver) was entered from the also eligible list and eventually won at 23-t0-1. The $.50 Pick 3 paid close to $4,000. The $1 double was a remarkable $2,600+.
  • Race 7: Fancy Martini (James Graham/Joe Sharp) paid $111.00 in victory and topped inarguably one of the most extraordinary tickets this year and also set a track record with the $.10 super returning $72,000+. The winning ticket was placed through a NYRA account and cost $18. It is the largest $.10 superfecta recorded in Keeneland's history. That payout broke the existing record by roughly $45,000 which was set in 2014. Other lofty payouts included all show prices $18+. The winner paid $50.24 in the middle. With 54-1, 37-1 and 48-1 finishing 1-2-3, respectively, other exotic prices were bewildering. The $1 exacta paid over $1,300. The $.50 tri paid nearly $8,000. Sharp, a successful trainer, hit the board for the first time this meet with his 11th starter.

  • Race 1: Paris Kentucky (Vincent Cheminaud/Ignacio Correas IV) made hunch bettors happy. The jockey is from France and his tack is now in Kentucky.
--------------
  • Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Joel Rosario are all serving three-day suspensions for riding infractions earlier this year. Getting ready for this weekend, each is loaded with mounts on October 22.

  • Steve Asmussen has won just once with 20 starters since October 15. He is 77 shy of 10,000.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Javier Castellano has settled into a groove. He had three wins today. Maybe the constant agent change has helped. His 23 wins is second best at the meet which ends October 30. Aqueduct races with various meets into the Spring 2023.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 7: An odd-looking payout with the $.50 Pick 3 paying $4.65 while the $.50 Pick 5 returned a handsome $2,500. Quite the discrepancy.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Damon Dilodovico's barn is red-hot this meet sporting a 15 7-4-1 (47%/80%) mark. He is second in wins behind Briitany Russell's nine victories.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 was hit for $80,364.94.

Race 1 starts with bombs. $1 tri paid over $2600. Lauralee Glaser is a small time jock who recently returned to riding and is a well over 30%. Did well here to start the day in fine form.

  • Todd Pletcher's barn continues to produce. Today he won four times with 14 horses sent out.
  • Jaime Rodriguez-Jamie Ness are 4-2-3 the last 10 times they form a team. One of the most formidable tandems in the mid-Atlantic.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $9.5 million.
  • Race 3: Evvie Jets (Eric Cancel/Mertkan Kantarmaci) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Noble Damsel Stakes.

  • Race 5: Agua Dulce (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) wired the field at 17-to-1 as the second largest price on the board. Yes, Castellano-Pletcher!
  • Race 7: Celestial City (Jose Lezcano/Shug McGaughey) circled the field to win the Grade 2 $300,000 Hill Prince Stakes.

  • Todd Pletcher entered five races and won three times.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Maryland Million Day: Eight of the 10 races held purses of $100,000 or more. A terrific card with deep fields and lots of local talent on display. Beautiful weather.
  • Race 11: Ournationonparade (Jaime Rodriguez/Jamie Ness) won the $150,000 Maryland Million Classic Stakes.

  • Race 9: Wicked Prankster (Richard Monterrey/Samuel Davis) wired the field to win the Maryland Million Turf Stakes. The rider's reaction was among the most enthusiastic in weeks. Good stuff. He may have reacted as if he won the Kentucky Derby but that is part of what comprises unscripted joy.
  • Handle: $5.5 million.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Gun Runner had two more stakes winners today. Quite the sire.
  • Steve Asmussen's barn had a remarkable day going 5 3-1-0.
  • Tyler Gaffalione had a 2-win day and leads the meet by two victories. Can he win another meet in Kentucky? This meet ends October 29.
  • Todd Pletcher leads the meet with nine winners. Five trainers have six wins.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $77,000.
  • Race 9: Wicked Halo (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $350,000 Grade 2 Raven Run Stakes.

  • Race 6: Gunite (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $250,000 Perryville Stakes. Gunite is 12 6-4-1. This horse could be a Breeders' Cup sprimter.

Hastings (British Columbia):
  • Race 1: A 1-to-9 shot placed.
