  • One Las Olas and Las Olas ran today. The former won at Laurel while the latter was unplaced at Gulfstream. Both are 2-years-old and with different ownership. Las Olas Boulevard is among Fort Lauderdale's most vibrant strips.
  • Steve Asmussen has horses in at least six states (KY, NY, NM, IN, OK, LA) this week. He is 72 victories shy of 10,000 wins.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: The 3X won. I don't recall the last time I saw a 3X win a race. Entries 1 and 1A, 2 and 2B ran but the 3 was scratched.
  • Race 7 and 8: Jose Gomez, a bug rider, was the winner in back-to-back starts. He could be a finalist for Apprentice of the Year.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Temple City Terror (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Dowager Stakes, a 1 1/2 mile turf race, in record-setting style. Gaffalione has a 1-win advantage over Luis Saez for meet leader in wins. The meet ends Sunday.

Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Christopher Emigh-Brittany Vanden Burg teamed twice and won both times. The husband-wife pair have won four of their past five opportunities when teaming at Hawthorne.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 6 Hopkins (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the MSW. The 4-year-old Quality Road colt broke his maiden in his third try. He was bought for $900,000. Baffert sent out a horse for the first time since October 10.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: The $.20 super paid over $37,000.
  • Race 9: Ironstone (Kazushi Kimura/Willie Armata) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Ontario Derby. The most recent stakes winner for the trainer, other than Ironstone, came in 2008. This is probably his best horse.

  • Race 10: The $.20 Super High Five jackpot paid a resounding $387.000+.

  • Jamie Ness sent out six horses -- three at Delaware and three at Parx -- and finished 6 3-3-0. He has hit the board with 14 of his past 16 starters. He is the 18th winningest trainer in North America annals (since such records were kept).
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Jeiron Barbosa visited from Maryland, had three mounts and finished 3 2-1-0. As mentioned a few times, he is my pick for top bug rider in North America this year. His lone defeat today, however, came as runner up to a mount by Jose Gomez who visited from New York and who may be the prime competition for the Eclipse Award.

The 10 here at Belmont at the Big A.... I'm one of the connections, hope he breaks well. Big shot to break his maiden.

Have another horse in the 5th here at Belmont at the Big A... Three Unions third time out, likes the turf, hoping Eric Cancel forwardly places her and we see what happens.

Thursday, October 27, 2022

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 4: A dead-heat for the win. One winning trainer was Scott Lake who has over 6,000 wins who ships infrequently to NYRA tracks.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 7: All four starters were sent off 2-to-1. I have never seen anything like that. The $1 double paid $34. The .50 Pick 3 paid over $1,500. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $17,000. Quite the difference between the double and the Pick 3.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 8: Post Time (Eric Camacho/Brittany Russell) won to give the rider a perfect 2 2-0-0 record this year, both times riding this horse. Although the rider has been active for about 20 years, he has just these two wins on only four rides starting with 2017.

Friday, October 28, 2022
  • Jeiron Barbosa won four times including one at Charles Town, the night track in West Virginia.
  • Brittany Russell is 9 3-2-3 the past two days. She won at Laurel and Delaware today within (roughly) 10 minutes.
  • Steve Asmussen remains 70 wins shy of 10,000 victories.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 4: Two 6-to-1 shots dueled to the wire and the winner got a nose in front. No matter how often it happens, the similarity in reaction by patrons at a race track is contagious. Anyone at a track knows that sound.
  • Race 6: Gagliano (Dylan Davis/Oscar Barrera, Jr.) won for the second time in 38 starts. She had hit the board his past three outings.
  • Jose Camejo sent out two horses and both won. Camejo is a former jockey who once broke his neck in a fall.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jeiron Barbosa and Horacio Karamanos each won three times. Barbosa is making quite the impression.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione added two wins to his meet lead which now stands at one. Luis Saez, with 18 wins, is one victory behind the new Mr. Kentucky. The meet ends Saturday (tomorrow).
  • Race 8: Sparkle Blue (Joel Rosario/Graham Motion) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Rubicon Valley View Stakes.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Umberto Rispoli is a turf magician. He won twice more on grass today.

So much for the lull before the storm but a sizeable amount of activity today across the tracks. Keeneland set a Fall Meet record $208,907,655 which was up more than 15% from 2021. Few venues in any sport across North America are as immaculate and gorgeous as Keeneland in Kentucky. The track hosts next week's Breeders' Cup weekend.

Luis Saez won the final race of the meet to edge Tyler Gaffalione 21-20 and clinch his second Keeneland riding title. Saez had a 3-bagger today.

Far more to come but...J.D. Acosta! How about Laurel on the big stage in New York today?! 42-to-1 shots catching 1-to-2 shots in a graded stakes.

Dear Lord....

  • Phil D'Amato entered five races (four in California, one in Kentucky) and won four times. He finished 11 4-2-2.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Over $11 million.
  • Race 5: Double Crown (J.D. Acosta/Norman Cash) shocked the masses with a driving finish to pick up prohibitive favorite Baby Yoda (Javier Castellano/Bill Mott) to win the Grade 2 $300,000 Kelso Handicap. The Maryland-bred 42-to-1 shot was the longest price on the board. Cash, who owns the horse, won a graded stakes for the first time. A NYRA graded stakes with Emma-Jayne Wilson, Jorge Ruiz and J.D. Acosta. Strange days indeed, most peculiar mama.

  • Race 8: Runningsonofagun (Kendrick Carmouche/John Toscano) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Bold Ruler. Another grade stakes winner for Gun Runner.

  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 returned a gigantic $274,000+.
  • Kendrick Carmouche rode three winners.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 8: Barzini (Jeiron Barbosa/Michael Trombetta) broke his maiden. "It was Barzini all along" to cite a famous Godfather line.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Best of Ohio: A good day for the local interests.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day of the Meet: $208,907,655 handled set a record for any Fall meet.
  • Luis Saez won the final race of the meet to edge Tyler Gaffalione 21-20 and clinch his second Keeneland riding title. Saez had a 3-bagger today.
  • Race 8: Balinikhov (Tyler Gaffalione/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Bryan Station Stakes on turf. The trainer is based in southern California where he specializes in turf races.

  • Race 9: West Will Power (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) won the $350,000 Grade 2 Hagyard Fayette Stakes.

Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Race 2: 30-to-1 and 40-to-1 morning lines finished 1-to-2 but were sent off at 7-to-2 and 9-to-2, respectively. Bad morning lines?
Zia Park (New Mexico):
  • "Wild Races": The track had exotic animal races including zebras, ostriches and camels.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $11 million.
  • Umberto Rispoli won three stakes today including one graded.
  • Phil D'Amato entered four stakes and won three times.
  • Race 1: Air Force Red (Juan Hernandez/Leonard Powell) won the $80,000 Lure Stakes.
  • Race 3: Going Global (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes.

  • Race 7: Cabo Spirit (Joe Bravo/George Papaprodromou) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Twilight Derby Stakes.

  • Race 8: Passarando (Umberto Rispoli/Steven Specht) won the $175,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes.
  • Race 9: Amy C (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes.
  • Race 10: Rhea Moon (Juan Hernandez/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 4 paid over $20,000.

What the.... if that isn't a non-graded stakes record, it has to be close. An Oscar Performance daughter out for the first time and aptly named Red Carpet Ready just topped a $.10 super worth over $38,000. A $120,000 MSW in race 4 at Churchill Downs' opening day.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Closing Day: The 28-day "Belmont at Bog A" Meet officially ended. Aqueduct will be the solo NYRA track until Belmont commences races sometime in the late first half of 2023.
  • Handle: More than $11 million wagered.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won the riders' title with 35 wins. It was his 21st NYRA title. He will in all probability be a finalist for Jockey of the Year in North America.
  • Chad Brown earned his fourth NYRA trainers' title of 2023 and 11th consecutive Fall Meet title, this year with 24 wins.
  • Linda Rice, second at the meet with 18 wins, had the top winning percentage with a 25% strike rate (more than six wins).
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening Day: Every horse entered was a 2-year-old. The meet goes into November 27 but does have two dark days this upcoming Friday and Saturday as Keeneland hosts the Breeders' Cup.
  • Tyler Gaffalione went into overdrive today as he had four winners. He lost the Keeneland title by one race yesterday.
  • Eleven Trainers: Eleven races, no trainer won more than once.
  • Into Mischief, inarguably one of the top sires currently in North America, produced three winners.
  • Race 4: Red Carpet Ready (Brian Hernndez, Jr./Rusty Arnold), an Oscar Performance daughter out for the first time and aptly named, just topped a $.10 super worth over $38,000. A $120,000 MSW.
  • Race 8: Declared no contest due to the breakdown of Paddock Boss and injured rider Alex Achard.
  • Race 10: Two Phil's (Jareth Loveberry/Larry Rivelli) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Street Sense Stakes. The 2-year-old Hard Spun colt was out for the fifth time and had previously won in Minnesota and Virginia but was overmatched in his last outing, a Grade I at Keeneland.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Victor Barboza, Jr. trained three winners including the 400th of his career.
Will Rogers (Oklahoma):
  • Race 4: A $134.20 winner was the biggest this day.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Phil D'Amato trained two more turf winners.
  • Race 6: Fort Warren (Juan Hernadez/Bob Baffert) won the $61,000 MSW in his debut. The $550,000 Curlin colt was one of three starters for Baffert but the other failed to hit the board.

Frankie Dettori is going to ride at Santa Anita this winter and maybe Gulfstream in 2023. He said he is looking for a new challenge at the age of 51.

Ron Anderson has his book. The agent has or had Joel Rosario and John Velazquez. I thought agents were restricted to two non-bugs. Either that rule has been amended or there is an exception. Either/or, Dettori will be in the US. He was riding overseas.
