Hawthorne (Illinois):
- One Las Olas and Las Olas ran today. The former won at Laurel while the latter was unplaced at Gulfstream. Both are 2-years-old and with different ownership. Las Olas Boulevard is among Fort Lauderdale's most vibrant strips.
- Steve Asmussen has horses in at least six states (KY, NY, NM, IN, OK, LA) this week. He is 72 victories shy of 10,000 wins.
- Race 9: The 3X won. I don't recall the last time I saw a 3X win a race. Entries 1 and 1A, 2 and 2B ran but the 3 was scratched.
- Race 7 and 8: Jose Gomez, a bug rider, was the winner in back-to-back starts. He could be a finalist for Apprentice of the Year.
- Race 7: Temple City Terror (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Dowager Stakes, a 1 1/2 mile turf race, in record-setting style. Gaffalione has a 1-win advantage over Luis Saez for meet leader in wins. The meet ends Sunday.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
- Christopher Emigh-Brittany Vanden Burg teamed twice and won both times. The husband-wife pair have won four of their past five opportunities when teaming at Hawthorne.
- Race 6 Hopkins (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the MSW. The 4-year-old Quality Road colt broke his maiden in his third try. He was bought for $900,000. Baffert sent out a horse for the first time since October 10.
Woodbine (Ontario):- Race 7: The $.20 super paid over $37,000.
- Race 9: Ironstone (Kazushi Kimura/Willie Armata) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Ontario Derby. The most recent stakes winner for the trainer, other than Ironstone, came in 2008. This is probably his best horse.
- Race 10: The $.20 Super High Five jackpot paid a resounding $387.000+.
