My fascination with Songbird had no boundaries and winning nine Grade I races showed her exceptional career. But tomorrow at Keeneland, one of her babies will run for the first time. Magical Song, a filly by Tapit, is Songbird's second baby but first to hit the track. An 8-1 m/l.

The Songbird baby broke bad yet finished strongly for third. I will keep an eye on her next race. Brad Cox is too good of a trainer to have a second awkward break.

  • Chad Brown is 15-for-115 at the Breeders' Cup. Not a bad percentage but I don't recall him winning the past couple or so years. Based on quick research, he is 0-for-30 since going 3-for-8 in 2019. His specialty is turf but that is where Euros exceed, too.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Javier Castellano had a brilliant afternoon going 9 5-2-1. He departs New York for Kentucky tomorrow but the veteran Hall of Fame riders was one of the few big-name riders to not ride at Keeneland.
  • Race 9: Battle Bling (Kendrick Carmouche/Rob Atras) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Turnback the Alarm Handicap.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jeiron Barbosa hit the board seven times and won twice. He is 20 6-4-5 this month at various mid-Atlantic tracks. Almost guaranteed to be one of the three finalists for Apprentice of the Year.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Rainbow Six: There were three tickets alive -- those using the 1, 5 and 8 -- for the big payday. The eventual winner (5) gave a bettor a quick $169.000+.
  • Edgard Zayas, one of the top local riders in south Florida in recent years, won twice including for the 2,000th time.
1667709406652.png

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Breeders' Cup Friday: A day for the juveniles. Five races were Grade I Breeders' Cup races.
  • Handle: $66,141,766, a record for the Friday edition of the 2-day event. A 7% increase from last year’s Friday handle of $61,696,893 at Del Mar.
  • Crowd: What is expected of a Keeneland crowd.
  • Main Attractions: Europeans performed well, winning three of the Breeders' Cup five races today.
  • Tyler Gaffalione, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Ryan Moore each won twice. Aidan O'Brien was the lone trainer with two wins.
  • Race 10: Victoria Road (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) won the $1,000,000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf by a nose against Silver Knott (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) in what was arguably the best finish of the day.

  • Race 9: Forte (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile which doubles as a Kentucky Derby prep. The $110,000 Violence colt is 5 4-0-0 lifetime with a lone stumble second time out in the Sanford at Saratoga. Among the defeated was prohibitive favorite Cave Rock (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) who entered 3 3-0-0 and was sent off at 2-to-5. Cave Rock looked a little tired to me in the stretch.

  • Race 8: Meditate (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) won the $1,000,000 Juvenile Fillies Turf in a dominating show. The Irish-bred raced in the U.S. for the first time following six career starts in the U.K. She began her career with four wins but then placed her past two starts.

  • Race 7: Wonder Wheel (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) rose to 5 4-1-0 lifetime following a win in the $2,000,000 Juvenile Fillies. The $275,000 daughter to Into Mischief suffered a defeat third time out in the Spinaway at Saratoga but otherwise has been near flawless. Gaffalione won a Breeders' Cup race for the first time.

  • Race 6: Mischief Magic (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the first official Breeders' Cup race of 2022 by winning the Juvenile Turf Sprint in course record time. He rallied with a furious kick from back of the pack. The Irish-bred colt improved to 6 4-0-1 and raced outside of Great Britain for the first time.

  • Race 5: Next (Luan Machado/William Cowans) was bet down heavily from a 15-to-1 morning line to 5-to-1 in winning the $350,000 Grade 2 Aftercare Alliance. The 4-year-old Not This Time gelding was out for the 15th time with six wins. He has raced at all five Kentucky tracks in addition to Saratoga, Delaware and Woodbine.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $10,000,000 which may have been the second highest in North America.
  • Edwin Maldonado rode three winners. I don't recall the most time he had a triple.

I don't know if the networks caught the full effect of Cody's Wish winning that Breeders' Cup race but that was as emotional scene as I remember. God bless that little boy and family. What a story. Great job by all and congrats to Junior Alvarado on his first Breeders' Cup win. Tearjerker if not a reality check.

A condylar fracture refers to a vertical fracture toward the lower (distal) end of the cannon bone. Depending on the complexity of the fracture and whether or not the skin has been broken, these types of injuries can frequently be surgically repaired with one or more screws and/or plates.

Total all-sources, global common-pool handle for the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland Race Course was $189,060,373, a record for the two-day event.

The total represents a 3.4% increase over the prior record of $182,908,409 set when the event was held at Del Mar in 2021 and an 18% increase from the total handle of $160,472,893 at the 2020 event held at Keeneland.

Total common-pool handle on Saturday's 12-race Breeders' Cup card was a record $122,918,607. All sources common-pool handle on Breeders' Cup's 10-race Future Stars Friday card was $66,141,766, also a new record for a Breeders' Cup Friday. This is the fifth consecutive year that Breeders' Cup grouped all its juvenile races together on Friday.

“We witnessed a spectacular two days of racing capped by Flightline's absolute brilliance in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, once again showcasing the best Thoroughbreds from around the world and we want to thank our partners here at Keeneland, who did a phenomenal job, and the greater Lexington community,” said Breeders' Cup president and CEO Drew Fleming. “The Breeders' Cup is truly an international championship event and the very best our sport has to offer.”

On-track handle for the two days was $28,326,478. Saturday's attendance was 45,973 and the two-day on-track attendance was 85,824.

The Breeders' Cup World Championships will return to Santa Anita Park in 2023 for its 40th running.

  • 14 Breeders' Cup Races Summary:
  • Jockeys: Ryan Moore (3), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (3), Tyler Gaffalione (2), William Buick (2), James Doyle (1), Junior Alvarado (1), John Velazquez (1) and Flavien Prat (1).
  • Trainers: Charlie Appleby (3), Aidan O'Brien (3), Todd Pletcher (2), Bill Mott (2), John Sadler (1), Chad Brown (1), Mark Casse (1) and Brad Cox (1).
  • Europeans vs. North America: Very competitive and the stars shined. Euros won six races, No Americans 8.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $11 million+.
  • Manny Franco rode three winners.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas had a spectacular day winning six times on nine rides. Having won his final two races Friday, he enters Sunday 8-1-1 on his past 11 mounts. That is nearly unthinkable.
  • Saffie Joseph, Jr. trained three winners.
  • Race 12: The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot was nailed for exactly $80,000.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Card: The second day of Breeders' Cup World Championships.
  • Handle: $189,060,373 set a record since the 2-day event was established in 2007.
  • Attendance: 45,973.
  • Bill Mott won three times including two Breeders' Cup races.
  • Curlin sired three Breeders' Cup winners on this day.
  • Race 12: Wakanaka (Joel Rosario/Bill Mott) won the $350,000 Fall Harvest Stakes. It was the trainer's third win on the card.
  • Race 11: Flightline (Flavien Prat/John Sadler) destroyed the field to win the $6,000,000 Breeders' Cup Classic by more than eight lengths. He heightened his ever-growing development as one of the great racehorses in recent years. Flightline won the 39th Breeders' Cup Classic with a move that was emblematic of something extraordinary and his perfect 6 6-0-0 record includes total margin of 71 lengths. Next up for Flightline could be the breeding shed. His true greatness will never be comparable to other greats if he retires at such a short point in time; however, what we witnessed is a flawless on-track legacy that is nearly unparalleled.

  • Race 10: Rebel's Romance (James Doyle/Charlie Appleby) won the $4,000,000 Breeders' Cup Turf.

  • Race 9: Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Distaff with Blue Stripe and Clairiere within inches in what appeared that all hit the finish line simultaneously. What a finish! Malathaat is 14 10-3-1 all-time with nearly $4 million earned.

  • Race 8: Modern Games (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Mile on turf. The 3-year-old colt is 13 7-3-1 lifetime.

  • Race 7: Elite Power (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Bill Mott) won the $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Sprint. The 4-year-old colt is 8 5-0-1 lifetime.

  • Race 6: Tuesday (Ryan Moore/ Aidan O'Brien) won the $2,000,000 Filly & Mare Turf. The Irish-bred had a mediocre record in Europe.

  • Race 5: Cody's Wish (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $1,000,000 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and more importantly the admiration of viewers nationwide. Cody's Wish is a 4-year-old son to Curlin who is 11 7-1-3, a record that includes seven wins in his past eight races. Cody Dorman, a 16-year-old from Kentucky with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome which is a rare genetic disorder, is the horse's namesake. The teen, who is in a wheelchair, was trackside and in the Winner’s Circle with the horse. It is THE story of the day alongside Flightline!

  • Race 4: Caraval (Tyler Gaffalione/Brad Cox) won the $1,000,000 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at 42-to-1. The $1 exacta was an enormous $881.27. The $.10 super paid over $3,700.

  • Race 3: Goodnight Olive (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $1,000,000 Filly & Mare Sprint to snap the trainer's Breeders' Cup losing streak at 30. It was the first of nine straight Breeders' Cup races.

  • Race 2: Nakatomi (Tyler Gaffalione/Wesley Ward) won.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: More than $13 million.
  • George Papaprodromou is 8 4-0-0 the past two days. He has been training for 20 years and his 15% efficiency rate this year is his best.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Sofia Vives won twice on board three mounts. The 10-pound bug, who is from Florida and worked for Mark Casse, entered today 1-for-5 lifetime. Starting a career 3-for-8 is not exactly the norm.

Flightline retired to Lane’s End, so no Pegasus for him. Hope everyone got a good look.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Manny Franco both rode three winners.
  • Chad Brown trained three winners.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Things That Make Me Go Mmmmmm: Todd Pletcher finishing 1st and 3rd in a race is nothing extraordinary except this $.50 tri returned close to $1,700. Native Thunder was ridden by Edgar Prado and topped the ticket at 18-to-1. Mark Casse trainee finished second. Thus, Hall of Fame trainers finished 1-2-3 and a Hall of Fame jockey won. Only if it was that simple.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Closing Day: The 18 day meet ended. Santa Anita re-opens December 26. Onto Del Mar until December 4 and then Los Alamitos.
  • Leading Jockey: Ramon Vazquez with 28 wins. The title was his first at Santa Anita. He was a regular rider in Iowa and Arkansas among other spots and tried California this year. He succeeded.
  • Leading Trainer: Peter Miller won his sixth Santa Anita title
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Who's the Star (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Mark Casse) was seventh in the stretch but prevailed to win the Grade 2 $175,000 Autumn Stakes.

  • Mark Casse had four winners this day including three at Woodbine.
