  • Since winning three times on November 11, the Steve Asmussen barn has gone 41 1-7-1 entering tonight's card at Remington (OK). His 10,000th career win will probably occur next year.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: More than $11 million.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: She Can't Sing (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Chris Block) wired the field in a romp to win the $300,000 Grade 3 Chilukki Stakes.
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Miguel Vasquez had a 3-win day. He is winning the current meet, which ends December 24, by a large margin.
  • Jennifer Young has just 16 wins in three years of training with a small stable but she had a robust day today winning at 6-to-1 and finishing second at 23-to-1 with her two starters. She sent out one horse 10 years ago at Suffolk Downs (MA) possibly as an assistant to someone unavailable.
Del Mar (California):
  • Justique (Victor Espinoza/John Shirreffs) won the $100,000 Desi Arnez Stakes and with it created quite the impression. A poor break and left in the dust were nothing compared to the stirring finish. The 2-year-old daughter to Triple Crown winner Justify cost $725,000 and is owned by Californians Lee and Susan Searing. The filly won for the second time in three lifetime starts.

  • Todd Pletcher entered at three tracks and finished 9 3-3-0. Annually one of the best trainers in the land.
  • ABC -- Asmussen's Barn is Cold: Since winning three times on November 11, the Steve Asmussen barn has gone 47 2-8-2. His 10,000th career win will probably occur next year.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 5: Give Me Kisses (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher), a $400,000 2-year-old daughter to Street Sense, was sent off the favorite and won her debut.

  • Race 8: Breaking Stones (Javier Castellano/Chris Englehart) romped by more than 12 lengths.
  • Race 10: Alogon (Abner Adorno/Ned Allard) broke the bank at 58-to-1. The gelded son to California Chrome was a $118 winner and topped exceptional exotics including a $.50 tri that paid over $1,300. The Pick 6 was nailed for more than $113,000. Adorno, based in Philadelphia, has won two of three mounts at Aqueduct the past two riding days. The New Hampshire-born Allard has been training for over 50 years and doesn't ship to NYRA tracks often. His first win came in 1970 at the now defunct Lincoln Downs in Rhode Island.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Our Strong Vows (Denis Araujo/Robert Bailes) won at 51-to-1. My "pick of the Day" placed. Grrrr.: Losing to a 51-to-1 shot.
  • Sheldon Russell was off his mounts after being unseated the prior day.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Conditions: Ugly and sloppy.
  • Race 3: A Rose for Raven (Jesus Castenon/Kerri Raven) aptly named for the Minnesota-based, Canadian-born trainer-owner won splendidly at 11-to-1. The winning conditioner entered the 4-year-old at 2-for-18 but the horse took nicely to the south Florida Tapeta..

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Weekend: Great racing expected this weekend as Churchill closes shop until next Spring. Friday offers two grade stakes and Saturday will have baby races galore.
  • Graphics: The small box in the upper left corner for Race # and MTP is far too small and cramped. Same at CDI-owned Fair Grounds (LA). The Kentucky tracks, including Keeneland and even Kentucky Downs, (though that is a short meet) fall short in this area and considering they are the center of the sport's universe this needs to be addressed.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 8: Havnameltdown (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes. The $200,000 Florida-bred son to Uncaptured is out of Ashley's Babe who was victorious just once in 25 lifetime starts. Havnameltdown is a multiple graded stakes winner who is 4 3-1-0 lifetime. The short field was even further reduced as a betting option as the trainer had three of five entered. He finished 1-2-5.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Canceled: Due to wintry weather.

Trevor McCarthy will be out of commission for up to 10 weeks following broken collarbone and pelvic injuries. He was injured Friday at Aqueduct. Fellow jockey Jalon Samuel was suspended seven days for his responsibility in the spill that fortunately resulted in no other injuries of significance.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 8: What a tremendous payout with a 2-to-1 shot winning by more than 8 lengths. A $1 super returned over $18,000, The favorite ran of the board. What followed in exotics were 13, 22 and 19. Not exactly outlandish bombs. Someone should give thanks in the season of thanks.

Zia Park (New Mexico):
  • Handle: Approached $1 million.
  • Stakes: Seven of ten races were stakes including the Zia Park Oaks and Derby.
  • Race 9: Bella Runner (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $250,000 Zia Park Oaks.

  • Race 10: Perfect Flight (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Peter Miller) won the $250,000 Zia Park Derby.

  • Ricardo Santana, Jr., once the go-to rider for Steve Asmussen, picked up two mounts for the injured (ankle) Florient Geroux and won twice. He finished 6 3-1-0.
  • Alfredo Juarez, local rider, won three times,
  • Peter Miller and Steve Asmussen both trained two winners.
Wednesday, November 23, 2022
  • Nearing 10,000: The recently cold barn of Steve Asmussen has heated with four wins the past two days. He is roughly 50 wins shy of 10,000 (depending on the frequency of updates).
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: More than $4.3 million.
  • Race 3: The $1 Pick 3 was enormous at $7,000.60.
  • Race 4: The $1 Pick 3 managed to dwarf the prior race with an approximate $17,000 payout. The $.50 Pick 4 was gigantic at $44,000.
  • Race 6: The $.10 super paid close to $5,000.
  • Race 7: The $1 Pick 3 paid close to $7,000.
  • Race 8: The $1 Pick 3 paid nearly $5,000. The $.50 Pick 4 payout surpassed $22,000.
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 5 Jackpot returned more than $24,000.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Handle: Roughly $3 million for opening day.
  • Race 3: Native Hawk (Jose Batista/Juan Arriagada) won for the 11th time in 31 starts at the track. That is an achievement few current horses can claim at any track. The 10-year-old was out for the 72nd time.
Horsehoe Indianapolis (Indiana):
  • Closing Day: The meet opened April 19. Ongoing into the early evening.
  • Leading Jockey: How about that finish? Joe Ramos won four times including three of the last five races to overcome a deficit and win the Horsehoe Indianapolis riding title, 106-105.
  • Leading Trainer Randy Klopp edged Genaro Garcia 65-63 to win the trainers' crown.
  • Leading Bug: Gage Holmes who is a resident of Pennsylvania and graduated Penn State University in 2018..

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Neutralize (Julien Leparoux/Albert Stall) debuted to a 41-to-1 win. The 2-year-old Runhappy fily was purchased for $260,000 out of a Blame mare named Spank.

  • Race 8: Tonal Impact (Keith Asmussen/Steve Asmussen) held on to give the jockey a win for his legendary father. It was the rider's first win of 2022 and his seventh lifetime. Despite his brief resume, he does not ride with a bug due to his stature being 5-foot-10-inches and roughly 125 pounds. Proud mama and happy son:

Brittany Russell's Whereshetoldmetogo has been scratched by the trainer from a stakes today. The 7-year-old is 8-for-for-11 at the track and 17-for-37 lifetime. He likely would have been the favorite.

Keep an eye on John Hall. That horse debuted to an exceptional come from behind run. I circled him early today. At 3-to-2 not much value but I love Violence babies and Brittany Russell may have a future star.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: Supreme Law (Lauralee Glaser/Richard Sillaman) was the lone first-time starter and gave the jockey her 10th win on her 30th mount this year. She is hitting at 33%, a career 10% rider who stopped riding not too long ago. She doesn't get many mounts (315 rides in 2016, her high, by comparison) but this is a solid resurgence.
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Five Wins + One: Angel Cruz, riding in Maryland earlier in the day, scored five wins and ended 6 5-1-0. He was 6 1-0-1 earlier in the day at Laurel. In total, he was 12 6-1-1 -- a six-win day!
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Joel Rosario had three mounts. He won both graded stakes.
  • Race 9: Bubble Rock (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) wired the field as the favorite to win the $300,000 Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes.
  • Race 11: Proxy (Joel Rosario/Michael Stidham) won the $750,000 Grade I Clark Stakes in a good position throughout and making the move at the expected time.

Saturday, November 26, 2022
  • Steve Asmussen is 47 wins away from 10,000 following a 3-win day today.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $11 million.
  • Kendrick Carmouche had a 4-win day. He finished a gigantic day going 8 4-1-2. Carmouche seemed especially pleased following his third victory.
  • Race 9: Astronaut (Kendrick Carmouche/Tom Albertrani) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Red Smith Stakes.,
  • Race 8: Greeley and Ben (Manny Franco/Faith Wilson) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Fall Highweight Handicap. The splendid 8-year-old gelding is 39 23-7-2 lifetime and under the care of the trainer for the first time. She entered today 2-for-38 lifetime but sent out three horses and two were victorious. Both horses had been under the eye of Jeffrey Englehart who may be serving days.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Swayin to and Fro (Grant Whitacre/Mario Serey, Jr.) won for the 7th time in 13 starts but is an exceptional 6 5-0-1 at Laurel Numbers like that should not go overlooked and yet the filly was sent off at 7-to-1 in a $100,000 race.
  • Race 3: John Hall (Feargal Lynch/Brittany Russell) won his debut with style. I waited for this horse's debut not limited to being a Violence son (among my favorites) but also to see what Russell, who is striking around 21% with babies. Lynch picked up the mount for the injured Sheldon Russell. He looked confident onboard this baby.

Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Race 2: Sargent Kobe (Justin Lewis/Scott Lane) won by more than 13 lengths for the 10-pound bug rider.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Luis Saez had an exceptional dream of a day going 12 6-3-0. His 6-win day was highlighted by winning five times at the midpoint of the 12-race card.
  • Gun Runner 2-year-olds won three times. Three different trainers, too. Gun Runner is in the conversation for the greatest horse of the past 25 years and certainly his siring abilities may elevate him in stature.
  • Race 11: Instant Coffee (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) came up huge to win the 96th edition of the $400,000 Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The race is a Kentucky Derby prep. The most recent winner of this race to be victorious in the Derby was Super Saver in 2009-10.

  • Race 10: Hoosier Philly (Edgar Morales/Tom Amoss) was sent off the prohibitive favorite and waltzed as perhaps the Lock of the Day at 2-to-5 to win the Grade 2 $400,000 Golden Rod Stakes. Early chatter but the filly is being tossed about for Kentucky Derby preps in addition to the Oaks.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Muddy: Ugly conditions throughout the day.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 7: Hong Kong Harry (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato), at one time nine lengths behind, was sent off the favorite and won the $250,000 Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap by a neck. Hong Kong Harry is 13 9-2-1.

  • Race 6: Spun Intended (Mike Smith/Mark Glatt) won the $70,000 MSW with emphasis. Among the trounced were three Bob baffert starters. The winner was sent off 4-to-5. A watchful eye has been set.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 3: Bluebirds Over (Edgard Zayas/Saffie Joseph) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Gray Stakes. The connections are based in south Florida.

  • Race 10: Renegade Rebel (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Mazarine Stakes.

Hoosier Philly is the latest rage. The filly was brilliant yesterday and she is mentioned for both Kentucky Oaks and Derby.

Today, is closing day at Churchill Downs. Turfway opens Saturday.

Heading into other states, Oaklawn opens its magnetic meet December 9. Arkansas racing is booming.

Del Mar ends December 4 and Santa Anita resumes December 26. In between is Los Alamitos.

  • Countdown to 10,000: Steve Asmussen is 45 wins away from 10,000 victories. He is the winningest trainer in North America history.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Starry Midnight (Javier Castellano/Jorge Abreu) caught Vax by a head in a thriller of an opener.
  • Handle: Roughly $7.5 million. Good job by NYRA to produce daily handles unlike certain other entities.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: Collection Day (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) was the trainer's lone entry and all that the winner showed was a 15 3/4 length victory on an off track. Let that settle a moment.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Today was the meet's final day. Onto Turfway Park.
  • Weather: Shall we say, less than ideal conditions.
  • Race 12: The $.10 super paid over $7,700 which is among the biggest I have seen this year in North America.
  • Race 10: Trademark (Martin Garcia/Victoria Oliver) won the Commonwealth Turf a race removed from turf due to track conditions.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $14,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $99,000.
  • Leading Jockey: Luis Saez won with 23 victories which was enough to secure his first Churchill Downs riding title. He also won the recent Keeneland meet. He had two more wins than Tyler Gaffalione who won four times today. Both riders head to Gulfstream (FL).
  • Leading Trainer: Michael Maker with 12 wins. He had one more than Steve Asmussen who had a 2-win day.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $12 million.
  • Race 8: Defunded (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes. Stable-mate Azul Coast (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) placed.

Well alas, turf racing is carded for Gulfstream on Thursday. It has been nearly half a year since turf racing has been held in south Florida. Conditioners seem to like Tapeta. Handicappers will focus on the surface and of course at this time of year, south Florida's importance to the industry escalates into April. The Championship Meet awaits.

The influence of Churchill Downs gaining ownership of Turfway Park has yet to be fully recognized. Mostly a night track, Turfway opens its extensive meet(s) tomorrow (Wedn.) with enhanced conditions including $70,000 MSW. The track is undergoing $145 million in renovations. This is the only live T-bred racing in Kentucky until April. The current meet ends December 31 and the winter/spring meet ends April 1. All racing is done on a Tapeta surface. Turfway has no turf.

And today the Russell barn announced the retirement of the horse. whose career mark included 17 wins, 13 in stakes, and $967,795 in purse earnings from 37 career starts.

“The horse is doing fine and he's going to have a great second career,” Russell said. “He just wasn't 100 percent, so we weren't going to run him. We said this is the time, unfortunately. He's going to be 8 years old. We wanted to get to a million [dollars], but he doesn't owe anyone anything.”

Kazushi Kimura will leave Woodbine when the meet ends in December and join an increasingly international appealing riders' colony at Santa Anita. That group will include Flavien Prat, Johnny Velazquez and Frankie Dettori in addition to those whose home base is southern Cal.

Gun Runner is a baby sire.

Just as a reminder: Curlin was born in 2004, Into Mischief in 2005 and Gun Runner in 2013. Truly a stunning stud.

The course is supposed to be in great shape.
They will have the rails out during the week.
No rail or just a few feet from the rail on the weekends.

They are maintaining the course differently than in past years.
Hopefully, that will work. Also, hoping for a pretty rain free meet.

With Fair Grounds not having turf racing until the end of December
at the earliest. The horse population will be good.

Bigger purses, bigger fields should mean BIGGER PRICES!
