$10.44 billion bet on No. America racing in 2022 is nearly a mirror image to the $10.44 billion bet through October in 2021.

In 2020, $9.2 billion was wagered. In 2019, $9.3 billion was bet.

Purse money has skyrocketed with over $1.1 million offered to date. That is 53% more than 2020. and 31% more than 2019.

Jeiron Barbosa has a wrist injury and a timeframe for return is unknown though the most severe appears to be three months.

Eduviel Ignacio has a broken collarbone. I didn't see an estimated time for return.

  • Totes: At one point, race tracks in Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and perhaps elsewhere all had delays which appeared to be connected to tote issues.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: Siege of Boston (Junior Alvarado/James Toner) broke his maiden with a burst from the outside.

  • Race 2: Greeley and Ben (Dylan Davis/Jeffrey Englehart), an 8-year-old, won his 38th start and saw the Winner's Circle for the 22nd.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 6: Unifying (Florent Geroux/Riley Mott) gave the trainer, son to Hall of Famer Bill Mott, his first lifetime win.

  • Veterans' Day: Thank you to all who serve(d). Some of the tracks displayed admirable tributes.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 2: Giant's Fire (Jose Ortiz/John Terranova II), a $510,000 purchase who entered off three lifetime races at Tampa Bay where he finished third each time, struck gold here with a win at 8-to-1. The 3-year-old son to Gun Runner was off since February.
  • Joel Rosario was off his mounts today due to illness. He also received word of a one-day suspension, to be served later this month. for a ride at last weekend's Breeders' Cup. Rosario is the defending Jockey of the Year in North America.
Penn National (Pennsylvania):
  • Canceled: Scheduled racing under the lights was canceled due to weather concerns.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Miguel Vasquez alternated losses with wins with his seven rides today. He is the runaway leader in wins this meet with three more victories today. The meet concludes December 24. The Championship Meet runs December 26 to April 2.
  • Turf Racing: Racing on turf will commence December 1.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Steve Asmussen sent out three horses and two returned winners. He is 59 wins shy of the magical figure of 10,000. His current victory total is the North America all-time high.
Del Mar (California):
  • Opening Day: The meet closes December 4. Onto Los Alamitos until December 26 when Santa Anita runs into June 2023.
  • Handle: Exceeded $10 million.
  • Race 7: Handy Dandy (Juan Hernandez/Peter Miller) defeated a charging Script (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) in a narrow win for the locals against the shippers in the $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes.

Bob Baffert debuts two $725,000 horses tomorrow (Saturday) in Race 4 at Del Mar.
  • Wudi is owned by Baoma Corporation (Charlie Chu) and will be ridden by John Velazquez
  • Faiza is owned by Michael Lund Petersen and will be ridden by Flavien Prat.

  • Claudio Gonzalez, undoubtedly the most successful Maryland conditioner the past few years, sent out three horses (two at Laurel and one at Gulfstream) and each was a victor.
  • Steve Asmussen is 58 wins shy of 10,000. He was quiet today.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Approached $9 million on a lackluster card.
  • Kendrick Carmouche had a 3-win day.
  • Race 9: Bern Rosey Bern (Kendrick Carmouche/Michelle Giangiulio) romped in the finale. Flattering Gal (Madison Olver/Orlando Noda) finished third at 31-to-1. The 23-year-old rider was on board a mount for the first time. Olver is from Colorado where she broke mustangs among other endeavors before exercising horses in New York for Christophe Clement. Off hand, I can't think of any current rider from Colorado on the major circuits although Hall of Famer Pat Day was born there.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Start Time: Began pre-noon due to a card featuring three stakes. Unfortunately, racing was off the turf.
  • Angel Cruz rode four winners.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgar Bayeh, winless in his career with nine starters entering today, won twice with three horses sent out. The trainer also helped make a certain handicapper very happy in the finale. He is a former assistant to Anthony Stabile and they have a past connection on tracks with Tapeta surfaces (Presque Isle and Golden Gate).
  • Race 11: The $.20 Pick 6 was nailed for $83,000+. Four horses were singled entering the finale and each offered significant value; however, a 12-to-1 shot was decisive and also topped a $.50 tri that paid $1,800+.
  • Race 9: Poppy's Boys (Sonny Leon/Cesar Figueroa) was the longest price on the board but the most recent Kentucky Derby winning rider got the 16-to-1 shot home nicely.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Purses: Ten of the 11 races held purses of $100,000 or more.
  • Paco Lopez rode three winners on five mounts.
  • Thomas Van Berg won three times. His father is Hall of Famer Jack Van Berg who famously conditioned Alysheba to the 1987 Kentucky Derby among other triumphs.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Race 2: Boot Legger, a 10-year-old, was out for the 99th time. He did win earlier this year.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Race 4: 12-to-1, 3-to-1 and 6-to-1 shots winning paid over $1,100 for the $.50 Pick 3. That seems like a lofty payday for those odds.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $14 million.
  • Race 4: Faiza (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) shined in her debut. The $725,000 daughter to Girvin, purchased by Mihael Lund Petersen of Pandora Jewelers, waltzed home by more than three lengths. Wudi. her stablemate, was scratched.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: Il Malocchio (Sahin Civaci/Martin Drexler) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Maple Leaf Stakes at 9-to-1.

  • Race 8: Our Flash Drive (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the Grade 2 $175,000 Bessarabian Stakes.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Joel Rosario, who returned yesterday from a brief absence due to an illness, was a stellar 6 4-1-1 today. He is expected to be one of the three nominees for Jockey of the Year in North America.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell entered 10 horses, nine of which ran. She finished 1-3-2. Not the best of days but she did come up 1-2 in her win.
  • Race 8: There was a noticeable size difference between the winner and place horses. The runner-up was caught in the stretch by the winner who pulled away with ease. The 4-year-old winning filly appeared decisively larger than the 3-year-old. Only select tracks release weights but I don't think Laurel is one. It would be interesting to see the difference between the two fillies.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 3: The top three finishers were sent off at near-equal odds of 7-to-1.
  • Race 9: Bango (Tyler Gaffalione/Greg Foley) won the $300,000 Bet On Sunshine, The 5-year-old horse is 27 11-1-2 lifetime which includes a remarkable 16 9-1-2 at Churchill Downs.

  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 was nailed for $96,000+.
Del Mar (California):
  • Bob Baffert has entered four races this meet with three winners.
  • Phil D'Amato is 12 5-4-1 (42%/83%). His horses on turf in southern Cal almost always have to be respected.
  • Edwin Maldonado rode two winners for Doug O'Neill.
  • Juan Hernandez won his final three rides.
  • Race 6: Massimo (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), a $575,000 son to Uncle Mo, finally broke his maiden in his fourth try.

  • Race 8: Fun to Dream (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Betty Grable Stakes. There was minimal contact in the stretch battle but enough to get the racetrack caller's attention. Good showing.

Doug O'Neill, annually a top trainer in California, received a fine and a 30-day suspension resulting from a medications (Grade 2) violation at Golden Gate Fields.

He will serve the suspension Nov. 21-Dec. 20 and is on probation until May 2023.

Churchill Downs limited turf racing at its home track and now indications are a small amount of turf racing will take place early in the extensive Fair Grounds (New Orleans) meet that CD owns. With Oaklawn (AR) not having a turf course, I wonder if some connections will instead try to enter at Tampa Bay which starts in a few days. Gulfstream (FL) will eventually have turf racing in December but it generally isn't as plush as Tampa though the purses are better. Interesting times for turf players. There is always Del Mar and Santa Anita.

  • Turf Racing: Finger Lakes, Parx, Mahoning Valley, Indiana and Churchill were the majors running today but only the 11th race at Turf Paradise offered a turf race.
  • Snow: Visible snowfall in Kentucky, Indiana and New York (Monticello harness).
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: Dazzling Blue (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) came up big in her maiden race, a $120,000 purse in a MSW. She is a $500,000 daughter to Into Mischief. Cox may have another star in his stable.

Horseshoe Indianapolis (Indiana):
  • Race 5: Sakic (Joshua Morales/Devarus Douglass) broke his maiden in his fourth try. He fended off challengers quite nicely and at 7-to-1 was a good score. The trainer began sending out horses last year while the owner, Willie Johnston, had a recorded winner for the first time. The breeders -- the well-established Holden Family -- are originally from North Dakota but settled in Colorado where they raced for many decades.

  • Graphics: Among the best across North America. Easy to read fonts and the bronze-white-black color combo is a favorite.

I wish I could pounce on my predictions pertaining to Gun Runner. He is certainly in the debate as to the best horse of the past 20 years (well, before Flightline came along) but his prowess with the mares is getting much attention now, too.

The DRF has a solid chart listing 15 sires who have seen offspring record a 90+ Beyer Figure in 2022. Of those 15, only Constitution has had a higher percentage than Gun Runner for offspring recording 100+ Beyer grades. He is only nine years of age.

Turf players should look at Aqueduct this Saturday for the deepest fields on that surface.

If New York cards 10 races this meet, the first post is expected to be pre-noon and this is the case both Friday and Saturday,

Only eight times has a rider won 68 graded stakes or more and Gomez is the lone rider to do it twice.

  • Bombs: Not just in New York. At Woodbine, Churchill and Indiana all within about five minutes.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $6 million.
  • Bombs: Larger than normal odds led to massive payouts late in the card.
  • Race 9: A 17-to-1 shot beat Sakic who was game but couldn't finish. The $1 Pick 3 was more than $3,100. The $.50 Pick 4 returned an astounding $63,000+. The $.50 Pick 5 did not payout. The $.20 Pick 6 paid out to those who hit four legs; I don't recall seeing that at a NYRA track.
  • Race 8: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $11,000 in what was a near-exact match to Race 7.
  • Race 7: A 34-to-1 shot was victorious. The $1 double was more than $1,200. The $1 Pick 3 was over $11,000.
  • Race 6: A 45-to-1 shot won. Wow! The $1 exacta returned $536. The $.10 super was over $5,000.
  • Race 5: An 11-to-1 shot began the festivities.
  • Jose Ortiz was off his mounts due to "abdominal pain" per one report.
Indianapolis Horseshoe (Indiana):
  • Steve Asmussen's lone win of the day brought him to within 57 victories of 10,000.

Chad Brown, off another less than impressive Breeders' Cup, is putting up solid numbers at this Aqueduct meet. He is 29 11-3-1 (38%). He also debuts He has 13 entered the next three days with nine in Maiden Special Weight races. The highest purchase price making a debut is Modern Love ($850,000) on Sunday with Joel Rosario on board.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 3: Rough Draft (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) was the lone first-time starter and prevailed at 10-to-1. A favorite suggested betting mechanism.
  • Trevor McCarthy suffered a broken collarbone in a spill in which there were no other injuries to rider or horse.
  • Double Up: Four riders and Linda Rice won twice.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jeiron Barbosa, injured last week in what could have been more severe to his wrist, returned today and won the opener. Apprentice of the Year leading candidate in my eyes.
  • Race 1: Noble Prendergast (Denis Araujo/Linda Albert) was the lone first-time starter and won at 6-1. This was within mere moments of Race 3 at Aqueduct where another lone first-timer won. The opportunity doesn't present itself often but it can reveal value.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $37,000.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Opening Day; The New Orleans track operates into April. Fair Grounds bills itself as "America's third-oldest racetrack operating since 1872,"
  • Jose Rodriguez had a 3-win day. He entered today with five lifetime wins in North America. He ended the day with eight victories.
Del Mar (California):
  • Bob Baffert finished 2-3 in a 5-horse field with established maidens. Purified (Ramon Vazquez) and Bletchley Park (John Velazquez) finished second and third, respectively. The favorite, out of the Peter Miller barn, finished last.
  • Kent Desormeaux rode twice, his first mounts since January 23.
