Racing appears to be a go in Massachusetts. Dormant since Suffolk Downs closed in 2019, a group headed by one of the track's former owners plans a 2-day meet in a small town in central Mass. in September 2023.

  • Steve Asmussen is 90 wins shy of 10,000 in his career. He is the winningest trainer in North America annals.
  • Luis Saez has lost with his past 31 rides. He is among a handful of riders who could be among the three nominees for Jockey of the Year but this skid won't add to his standing.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Exceeded $13 million. Two races scheduled for turf were run on dirt.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three times including back-to-back graded stakes.
  • Flavien Prat finished 4 2-2-0. He could very well join Joel Rosario and Irad Ortiz, Jr. as finalists for Jockey of the Year.
  • Race 7: Life Is Good (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $500,000 Grade I Woodward Stakes. He is the second-best horse currently in North America on many lists. Life Is Good is 11 9-1-0 after winning this race in expected fashion at 1-to-9 despite a sloppy turf. The son to Into Mischief has won over $4.3 million.

  • Race 8: Pleasant Passage (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Shug McGaughey) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes and with the win received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.

  • Race 9: Dancing Buck (Manny Franco/Michelle Nevin) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Belmont Turf Sprint as he trounced the field in gate-to-wire fashion. Out for the 14th time, this was his first try in a graded stakes.

  • Race 10: Blazing Sevens (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $500,000 Grade I Champagne Stakes by a wide margin. The son to Good Magic was out for the third time. The connections received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Card: Off the turf due to sloppy track conditions.
  • Jaime Rodriguez rode six times, all for Jamie Ness, and finished 6 2-1-0. Rodriguez is 14 8-2-0 the past two days.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Off the turf due to sloppy track conditions.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $8.5 million.
  • Race 8: Anatomically (Edgar Perez/Jose Pinchin) won the $400,000 Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes.
  • Race 10: Awesome Strong (Miguel Vasquez/Jorge Delgado) won the $400,000 Florida Sire In Reality Stakes.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Senor Buscador (Francisco Arrieta/Todd Fincher) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Ack Ack Stakes and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. The winner was the lightest raced horse with just seven starts and no prior graded stakes wins. His other wins came at Lone Star (TX) and twice at Remington (OK).

  • Race 10: Hot Rod Charlie (Tyler Gaffalione/Doug O'Neill) won the $500,000 Grade 2 Lukas Classic Stakes in a nail-biter over 2022 Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Sonny Leon/Eric Reed). The winner is 18 5-5-4 lifetime with over $5.5 million earned. Hot Rod Charlie, who seemed to find ways to lose in the past, came back on the eventual second place finisher after Leon had an equipment issue. From HorseRacingNation: “Sonny said the saddle loosened to the left,” Rich Strike’s trainer Eric Reed told Horse Racing Nation. “He said, ‘I started to lose my balance. The saddle slipped over and made me lean to the left.’” Despite the loss, Rich Strike may have at least temporarily silenced some critics; however, he has just two wins in 11 starts.

1664679697825.png

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $15 million.
  • Card: The second card of the meet was deep with graded stakes aplenty.
  • Race 3: Masteroffoxhounds (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 2 $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship Stakes. The 5-year-old was 0-for-5 in 2022.

  • Race 5: Beyond Brilliant (Victor Espinoza/John Shirreffs) won the Grade 2 $200,000 City of Hope Mile Stakes.

  • Race 6: Howbeit (Mike Smith/John Shirreffs) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes.

  • Race 7: Whatmakessammyrun (Joe Bravo/Mark Glatt) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes.

  • Race 8: Defunded (Edwin Maldonado/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 1 $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes by wiring the field at 5-to-1. The winning connections received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. Country Grammer (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) was runner up. He is 13 4-5-1 ($11 million+ earned lifetime) which includes winning the $12 million Dubai Cup and a runner up in the $20,000,000 Saudi Cup both earlier this year.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Near $9 million.
  • Race 5: Flawless Cat (Madeline Rowland/Mike Dini) made his debut and wired the field at 12-to-1. The 18-year-old jockey, who is from Maryland, had been riding this year at mid-Atlantic tracks and Tampa Bay, but won at a NYRA track for the first time in four career mounts.
  • Race 7: Rocky Sky (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Waya Stakes.
  • Race 8: Chocolate Gelato (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $400,000 Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and with the victory earned a berth in the Breeders' Cup. The 2-year-old, purchased for $475,000, is a son to Practical Joke.

  • Race 9: Major Dude (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes and with the victory earned a berth in the Breeders' Cup. The 2-year-old, purchased for $550,000, is a son to hot young sire Bolt d'Oro.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Today ended the brief meet. Onto Keeneland for the October 7-29, 2022 Fall Meet.
  • Race 10: The track has seen some high payouts this meet but this was the biggest when the $.20 Pick 6 paid a gigantic $233,754.46.
  • Race 7: East Shore (Martin Garcia/Dale Romans) won at 55-to-1 and set the wheels in motion for an enormous payout.
  • Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione won his ninth Churchill Downs meet. He is Mr. Kentucky!
  • Leading Trainer: Brad Cox with 11 wins.
  • Steve Asmussen had a 3-win day. He is 87 wins shy of 10,000.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Over $10 million.
  • Bob Baffert entered six races the past two days and won four.
  • Ramon Vazquez rode winners in two of the three stakes races.
  • Race 4: Midnight Memories (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Zenyatta Stakes.

  • Race 5: Speed Boat Beach (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes and with it received a bid to the Breeders' Cup.
  • Race 6: Ce Ce (Victor Espinoza/Michael McCarthy) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Chillingworth Stakes. Ce Ce is 22 11-2-4 with a 10 6-2-1 mark at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old mare has earned well over $2 million.

  • Race 8: Heywoods Beach (Ramon Vazquez/John Sadler) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Tokyo City Cup Stakes.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 2: The $1 exacta paid $673.50. The $.20 tri paid $2,786. The $.20 super paid $19k.
  • Race 9: Sir for Sure (Declan Carroll/Mark Casse) won the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $400,000 Breeders' Stakes. The young jockey's father is the winning trainer's assistant. Casse had two entered and his other runner placed as the favorite.

Longchamp Racecourse (Paris, France):
  • Highlight: Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe which was inaugurated in 1920 at a track which opened in 1857. It is the U.S. equal of $5 million.
  • Breeders' Cup: Five races part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.
  • Race 4: Alpinista (Luke Morris/Sir Mark Prescott), sent off the 7-to-2 favorite, won Europe's richest race and with the victory received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. The trainer, active for 53 years, made his first visit to the track in 21 years. The only other 5-year-old mare to win this race came in 1937.

Sandy Leon suspended 15 days for interference
Sonny. How soon we forget. :sarcasm:

Interesting perspective from the Mig.

Award-winning retired jockey-turned-broadcaster Richard Migliore was not impressed with Leon's actions. He broke down the stretch run on the New York Racing Association broadcast of America's Day at the Races (see video below).
“First and foremost, it takes away from the performance of two very courageous racehorses in Hot Rod Charlie and Rich Strike,” Migliore said. “The conversation becomes about a rider leaning all off to the left of his horse to put an elbow into another rider to slow down his forward progress.
“Honestly I think the tactics, besides being wrong, were a complete mistake, because why would you go pick a fight with Hot Rod Charlie, who likes to fight? You had momentum, stay away from him! Instead, Sonny Leon chose to break the hold on his rein, lean in and pull his horse toward (Hot Rod Charlie). When you lean in and pull a horse toward another horse, you're actually slowing their forward progress.

Laurel's card is decimated today. We have a match race in the 5th with 13 of the 15 horses scratched. In the 7th, 11of 15 have been scratched. All races are off turf.

NYRA hasn't finalized the card yet but it doesn't look promising for turf players.

UPDATE: New York is off the turf

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Card: All five turf races were moved to dirt.
  • Kendrick Carmouche had a 4-bagger today.
  • Race 8: Mosienko (Flavien Prat/Dennis Lalman), the 5-year-old daughter to Hat Trick, out for the 31st time, won her fourth straight in marrow fashion.
1665192314807.png

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Crushed due to muddy track conditions. Racing off the turf.
  • Race 5: Down to a match race as 13 of the 15 entered were scratched. I don't recall the most recent time 13 horses were scratched from a race.
  • Race 7: Of the 15 horses entered, 11 were scratched.
  • Husband and Wife: Sheldon and Brittany Russell teamed to go 4 2-2-0.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Schedule: Gulfstream is conducting a 12-month a year schedule and it can be tedious to figure its schedule and meet names. Currently, the Sunshine Meet is ongoing and that seems the case until December 24. The Championship Meet -- the most luxurious in the state -- starts December 26. At some point in December turf racing will be conducted. I lost track the most recent date Gulf has held turf racing. The track is the lone facility in the world, at last check, to have dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces. My guess is the track will increase its current 3-day a week racing to as many as five some point in January.
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Race 7: The maidens were out and the top three finished 17-to-1, 5-to-1 and 92-to-1. The $.50 tri neared $2,000. The $.10 super was over $2,600.
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $12,000. The $2 double was $800.

  • Opening Day: Today was the first day of the meet that ends October 29. Churchill Downs resumes October 30 through November 27 except for the Breeders' Cup which operates November 5-6 at Keeneland. Turfway runs Nov. 30-Dec. 31 and that concludes 2022.
  • Card: Three races part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.
  • Bombs: Favorites won just three times in 10 races but bombs also factored into many wins.
  • Repeat Winners: E.T. Baird, perhaps surprisingly and at the age of 55, and Luis Saez both rode two winners.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $25,000.
  • Race 7: Manny Wah (Corey Lanerie/Wayne Catalano) won the Grade 2 $350,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes at 17-to-1.

  • Race 8: Delight (Luis Saez/Jonathan Thomas) won the Grade 2 $350,000 Jessamine Stakes.

  • Race 9: Wonder Wheel (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) won the Grade I $500,000 Darley Alcibiades Stakes by a nose.

  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $43,000.

  • What a day: One of the most majestic days on the racing calendar. Seven Breeders' Cup Series races among the most important.
  • Top Cards: Woodbine, Santa Anita, Aqueduct/Belmont and of course Keeneland displayed rich talent throughout.
  • Steve Asmussen is 83 wins away from 10,000 victories. He currently has the most wins in No. America history.
  • John Velazquez has lost with his last 25 mounts. His most recent win came September 24 at Parx.
  • Luis Saez has won just twice with his past 44 mounts and both came yesterday.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $12 million.
  • Race 5: Elite Power (Jose Lezcano/Bill Mott) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Vosburgh Stakes. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued.

  • Race 6: American Apple (Eric Cancel/Daniel Leitch) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Matron Stakes by a neck and the imposing odds of 47-to-1. The trainer took out his license last year and has spent much of his time at Horseshoe Indiana and based at Keeneland. He earned his first stakes win. The horse is a 2-year-old daughter to American Pharoah.
  • Race 8: War Like Goddess (Joze Lezcano/Bill Mott) won the $500,000 Grade I Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.
  • Jose Lezcano rode three winners including two graded stakes for Bill Mott.
  • Bill Mott has won with four of his past five starters this weekend.
  • Christophe Clement trained three winners.
  • Arrogate: We will never know how great of a sire this colt would have been. His offspring made much news today.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: Annapolis (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Turf Mile. The 3-year-old War Front colt is 7 5-2-0. The morning line of 10-to-1 seemed high and he was bet down to 6-to-1. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued.

  • Race 9: Forte (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) nipped favorite Loggins (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) in the $600,000 Grade I Breeders' Futurity. The 2-year-old Violence filly is 4 3-0-0. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued to the winner.

  • Race 8: In Italian (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) won the $750,000 Grade I First Lady Stakes.
  • Race 7: Slammed (Florent Geroux/Todd Fincher) won the $350,000 Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America. A rare New Mexico bred winning at Keeneland, the 4-year-old filly is 12 9-1-0. She broke her maiden at Sunray Park and had raced at all five New Mexico tracks prior to her past three races in California and now Kentucky. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued.

  • Race 6: Golden Pal (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Woodford Stakes. The exceptional 4-year-old Florida-bred son to Uncle Mo is 12 8-2-0.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three times and each was a graded stakes. He is all but assured as a nominee for Jockey of the Year,
  • Todd Pletcher trained two winners both graded stakes.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $13 million.
  • Race 5: Going to Vegas (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the $300,000 Grade I Rodeo Drive Stakes in gate-to-wire style. The 5-year-old mare was out for the 28th time and sports an impressive 15 6-6-0 mark at Santa Anita. The duo is excellent in California turf races. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued.
  • Race 6: And Tell Me Nolies (Ramon Vazquez/Peter Miller) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes despite a slight bobble at the break. The 2-year-old daughter to Arrogate is 4 3-0-0. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued.

  • Race 8: Cave Rock (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $350,000 Grade I American Pharoah Stakes. The 2-year-old son to Arrogate looks to be something special after improving to 3 3-0-0 in a gate-to-wire romp. Baffert finished 1-2-3-4 in the race including third with Hejazi (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) who was a $3.55 million purchase, the most ever at a Maryland sale. The 3-year-old son to Bernardini is now 3 0-2-1. A Breeders' Cup invitation was issued.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $8.7 million.
  • Race 7: Cazadero (Patrick Husbands/Brendan Walsh) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Nearctic Stakes.
  • Race 8: Who's The Star (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Durham Cup Stakes.
  • Race 9: Rougir (Kazushi Kimura/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $900,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes.

  • Mark Casse unloaded part of his stable and finished 15 4-2-1.
  • Kazushi Kimura rode the entire card and finished 11 4-2-2.

Santa Anita is estimating a $3 million jackpot in the Pick 5.

Bob Baffert has a rare turf starter in Race 5 at SA.

  • Todd Pletcher is 10 5-1-0 the past two days and that includes winning four graded stakes three of which were Grade I victories. Undoubtedly one of the best conditioners in North America annals he has earned over $444 million which is tops all-time.
  • Suspensions Upcoming: Three of the nation's best will be suspended following infractions at Keeneland. Joel Rosario, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Jose Ortiz will all be suspended from Oct. 19-21.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Nearly $9 million.
  • Race 3: Nest (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won by nearly 10 lengths as the prohibitive choice at 1-to-9 to claim the $250,000 Grade 2 Beldame Stakes. Nest is 10 7-2-1 all-time with nearly $2 million earned. The 3-year-old daughter to Curlin is a consummate professional.
  • Race 6: Nagirroc (Manny Franco/Graham Motion) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Futurity Stakes in a thriller. With the victory, received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. The race was first run in 1888 and set the wheels in motion for horses such as Citation. Secretariat, Affirmed and Holy Bull among many others.

  • Race 8: King Cause (Kendrick Carmouche/Michael Maker) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Knickerbocker Stakes.
  • Race 9: Bunty Windermere (Madeline Rowland/Derek Ryan) wired the field at 52-to-1 -- how often does that happen anywhere especially New York? -- to produce gigantic payouts but none bigger than a $.50 Pick 6 that returned $281,000+. Rowland is a Maryland-teenager who is in her first year of riding, something she did earlier in the mid-Atlantic and Tampa Bay.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won as expected in the Grade I Spinster Stakes and with the victory received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup. The winner is a 4-year-old daughter to Curlin who has earned more than $2.8 million.

  • Race 8: Andthewinneris (Flavien Prat/Wayne Catalano) was sent off the 4-to-1 favorite in a field of 12 and won the Grade 2 $250,000 Bourbon Stakes in stakes record time. With the victory, received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup.

  • Race 6: Private Creed (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) received a Breeders' Cup berth following a win in the $250,000 Indian Summer Stakes.
  • John Velazquez rode two winners today. He entered with 25 straight non-wins.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $12 million.
  • Pick 5 Pool:

  • Umberto Rispoli rode winners with his first three rides and unsurprisingly all were on turf. He is a turf specialist in southern California.
  • Race 10: Packs a Wahlop (Mike Smith/Jeff Mullins) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Zuma Beach Stakes.
  • Race 6: Arabian Lion (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert) won his maiden race after being sent off the favorite. Stable-mate Elwood Blues (Edwin Maldonado/Bob Baffert) placed also as a first-time starter.

  • Race 5: Commanche Country (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Surfer Girl Stakes. The jockey-trainer comprise one of the most formidable duos in North America on turf. And as expected a surfboard was in the winner's circle.
  • Race 1: One of my favorite suggested betting angles nearly succeeded in volumes as Shocking Grey (Tyler Baze/Jeff Mullins) flew from mid-pack but placed at 21-to-1. Could have been an enormous ticket but $15.80/$8.20 are nice consolation payouts.

What a terrific weekend of racing across America. And kudos to the tracks for seemingly not overlapping especially in stakes races. Saturdays can be tougher than other days but this being one of the most electric days weekends of the year created flawless energy.

Now with that said, the October 14 card has been released:
