The Keeneland yearling sales remain robust. Through today's seventh session, $355 million has been spent on 1.556 head. Last year's total was $352 million spent for the entire sale.

Sales are up approximately 17% this year to last year through seven sessions.,

Sire Into Mischief is the leader with 57 sold for over $30 million. Of the top 18 horses sold, six have been by Quality Road, four each by Gun Runner and Into Mischief and two each by Constitution and Curlin.

Mike Repole (Repole Stables) and Vinnie Viola (St. Elias Stables),
the latter is the owner of the Florida Panthers, have teamed to spend more than $12 million and have a slight advantage over agent Donato Lanni, whose firm usually sends to Bob Baffert.

Gun Runner made an exceptional name on track in recent years but his siring ability at a young age has also been demonstrative. Look for his babies throughout but particularly out of Tapit mares. There has been early success.

RIP Cezanne 2017-2022;

Most recently in Todd Pletcher's stable. A son to Curlin, looked ever bit as formidable as his daddy. He was on the grand stage from day one due to his purchase price at over $3 mil. A fungal infection can fall a horse as such. Powerful beasts can be so fragile some times.

FTC, WHO OPERATES THE TRACK at Cumberland Raceway sets 150th annual Fair race schedule from 9/25 to 10/2 (last day is always open date without any other event happening that day, similiar to the Race Festival dates) post will be 1:30 that week

Thursday, September 22, 2022

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 8: Mosienko (Luis Saez/Dennis Lalman) was out for the 30th time and won her third straight start. Obviously a hockey connection with the sire Hat Trick. I know of no connection between the smaller-stable trainer -- 50 wins in about 25 years of training -- and the high-profile rider but Saez has been on top for the past four rides. Lalman's daughter owns the 5-year-old mare.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • The remarkable streak of Jaime Rodriguez came to an end today at 8 wins which is one off the U.S. record of consecutive winning rides. Albert Adams (1930), Anthony Black (1993) and Travis Dunkelberger (2009) possess the record of nine straight. The North American mark is 14 set by a rider in Canada. While it will be easy to connect Jamie Ness to Jaime Rodriguez, the duo paired just once. In fact, the rider won for eight different trainers and all at Delaware Park.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Wayne Lukas collected two wins with three starters today. He turned 87 years of age earlier this month.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 4: Encode (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) finally broke his maiden in her fourth try. The Empire Maker colt was a $245,000 purchase but could manage only a third-place finish in three races at Del Mar. He was dropping down in class. Purified (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert), a $385,000 purchase, placed in his debut. Purified is a 3-year-old Florida ridgling.

KEENELAND YEARLING SALES:
With two sessions remaining, the 2006 record of $399,791,800 was snapped by a figure in excess of $400 million which includes $12m in post-sales in addition to $399m in the ring.

The total head sold is 2,597.

  • Steve Asmussen is exactly 100 wins shy of 10,000. He is the all-time leader in North America training wins.
  • Keeneland Yearling Sale: With one day to play, the Yearling Sale at pristine Keeneland has exceeded $415 million which is a figure adding to the all-time mark previously set in 2006.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Joel Rosario-Jose Camejo teamed twice and won both times. Camejo has been training about 10 years. He won suffered a broken neck while riding.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. (10 wins) and Luis Saez (9 wins) are battling for top rider this meet, which ends October 30.
Monmouth at Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • All Turf: The first of nine all-turf cards. I believe this is one of just two all-turf meets (Kentucky Downs) annually in the U.S.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 3: Lindros (Angel Arroyo/Cathal Lynch) won at 13-to-1. The pricey New York-bred, at $130,000, won for the second time in 12 starts.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Horacio Karamanos rode three winners on board his final three mounts and then went to Penn National where he won his solo ride there. On this day, he went 6 4-2-0. He won four at Pimlico one day earlier this month.
Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners.
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 paid $159,000+. The odd combo was 7-6-11-6-6-6. The exotics have been paying out high at this meet.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Opening Day: Today was the first day of 30 for T-bred racing this Fall.
  • 2023: The track was awarded 68 T-bred racing dates next year from March 4 through Sept. 4. Fairmount Park (FanDuel) in downstatereceived 62 T-bred from April 18 through Nov. 18,
  • 2024: The track announced today that the proposed casino could be ready to go in 2024, or 14 months from the first day of construction which they hope would begin some time in 2022.

While the eyes of the racing world are on Philadelphia tomorrow -- and rightly so -- don't overlook this sleepy good card at Pimlico. The track is dark until Preakness time next year. Laurel returns September 30 through sometime in April or May.

end of another era in horse racing:

Exhibition Park in Saint John, NB will cease operation after 10/15/22, after lease extension talks break down and stop

KEENELAND YEARLING SALES: 2,961 horses sold for a record total $418,271,200. The sales figure shattered the previous record set in 2006 by almost 5%.

So much more but I hope we can all appreciate Gun Runner and that horse's magical ability on the track and now off. A special, special, animal.

$18,844,528 was bet a Parx today, not only a record handle but 36% better than the 2021 PA Derby. The prior mark was set in 2014.

  • Steve Asmussen is 98 wins shy of 10,000.
  • Gun Runner had five stakes winners.
  • Jamie Ness entered horses at four mid-Atlantic tracks and went 11 2-4-1. He was suspended in August for six months by the Pennsylvania Racing Commission but that is under appeal.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Over $11 million. Philly was the big show today and it out-did New York for a rare time.
  • Race 3: Love and Thunder (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the $175,000 Grade 3 Athenia Stakes. Brown on turf in a graded stakes in New York. It has been known to be a successful recipe.
  • Race 11: Capital Gal (Heman Harkie/George Weaver) gave the rider a rare chance on a favorite and he won. And yes, his first name is spelled Heman.
  • Jose Lezcano rode three winners.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: $18 million+ set a track record.
  • Owners: Cash is King and LC Racing LLC entered horses in three races and came back victorious with each. They had a place finish is one of the wins to end 4 3-1-0. Cash is King, in a different variant, owned Afleet Alex.
  • Paco Lopez rode three winners.
  • Race 8: Ridin With Biden (Paco Lopez/Butch Reid) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Greenwood Cup.
  • Race 9: That's Right (Andy Hernandez/Michael Moore) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Monster Turf Stakes.
  • Race 10: Scaramouche (John Velazquez/Guadalupe Preciado) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes.
  • Race 11: Society (Florent Geroux/Steve Asmussen) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Cotillion Stakes. The daughter to Gun Runner is 6 5-0-0 and entered off a Grade 3 win at Charles Town (WV).

  • Race 12: Taiba (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Pennsylvania Derby as he throttled the field. A son to Gun Runner, Taiba cost $1.7 million and has elevated his position about the best runners in the U.S. currently. Taiba finished 12th in the Kentucky Derby but has resurfaced as a powerful competitor.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 6: What an awesome race! Even with the photo finish, I couldn't tell a victor.
  • Race 1: Exacting (Angel Arroyo/Victor Carrasco, Jr.) was cold on the board at 5-to-1 following a 2-to-1 morning line but he wired the field.
  • Jaime Rodriguez, whose 8-race win streak, that nearly set a U.S. record, ended earlier this month, finished 8 3-3-0.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Card: A good card highlighted by four stakes races.
  • Handle: $3.9 million.
  • Jeiron Barbosa won the first two races and three total. He maintains his 5-pound bug. He could very well win Apprentice of the Year,
  • Race 7: Can the Queen (Jean Alvelo/Joanne Shankle) won the $100,000 Sensible Lady Turf Dash Stakes. Shankle is 2-for-2 lifetime training amd she also owns the horse. I believe she once worked for recent meet winner Rudy Sanchez. Jockeys kissing their mounts never gets old either.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Sunshine Meet: Gulfstream is calling its next mee the Sunshine Meet. The track will hold racing 12 months a year for the second straight year.
  • Edgard Zayas rode three winners.,
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Steve Asmussen had two big winners.
  • Race 9: Echo Zulu (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $275,000 Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes in impressive fashion. The brilliant daughter to the immensely talented Gun Runner is 7 6-0-0 with nearly $2 million earned. Santana picked up the mount following the $300,000 filly's lone loss under Joel Rosario. She is a star!
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 8: Carla (Juan Hernadez/Bob Baffert) won the $50,000 MSW. The $975,000 filly broke her maiden in her second try.

I mentioned Gun Runner and his progeny a few times. An article today explores his significant ability to reproduce in his post-racing career:

A day after Gun Runner 's progeny posted five stakes wins—two of which came in grade 1s—the word used to describe his success as a sire boils down to this: unprecedented.
"I have never seen anything like it," said Winchell Thoroughbreds racing manager David Fiske. "And neither has anybody else."
