With Saratoga closed for the year and Belmont undergoing renovations (closed to racing due to ongoing construction to modify the complex), Aqueduct is the only NYRA track conducting live racing for the rest of 2022 into much of the first half of next year.

The Belmont Meet at the Big A" (Belmont's former meet will be run at Aqueduct) will run September 15-October 30.

Aqueduct will run a 29-day Fall meet from November 4 through December 31. The highlight is the $750,000 Cigar Mile on December 3.

Aqueduct will then hold another meet from January until Belmont is re-scheduled to open sometime in the Spring.

In summary, Aqueduct will run from September 2022 until probably late April 2023.

Bob Baffert's $3,550,000 son to Bernardini is listed as an also-eligible for Del Mar's 5th race on Saturday. The New York-bred named Hejazi finished second on August 20 in his debut. He is the highest priced horse ever purchased at a Maryland sale.

In the same race, Fort Bragg, a $700,000 son to Tapit, debuts.

Saturday's big cards are at Del Mar and Kentucky Downs. They are as follows:

RIP Elizabeth and hopefully not the end of the Queen Jubilee that has been shown on TVG/Fanduel TV; UK Racing Association suspends all events through Saturday in honor..... the late Monarch has roughly 2K Career wins as a breeder/owner

oh great:

CDI has aligned with FanDuel TV (TVG) in a content sharing multiyear agreement set to begin by 2024; depending on what media rights contract Fox Sports/NYRA negotiate past 2023;

don't know how this agreement may impact Horse Racing coverage of the Triple Crown events once Belmont is renovated since it was reported that Fox Sports had acquired the Belmont Stakes TC Race in 2023

Everyone watching this race at Gulfstream without a wager has to be pulling for the 2 and 7 to hook up.

I Like Vino and Too Much Vino would make for a fun stretch battle.

Time will tell and the extra exposure on Fox has aided New York tremendously.

Virginia racing is a smash hit. With $75 million wagered at the short Colonial Downs meet, a record was not only set but obliterated the 2006 previous mark by 52%.

The 2021 figure was passed by 60%.

The last two days this year but handled over $6 million which eventually have become the top two daily handles in track history.

Friday, September 9, 2022

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Opening Day: The rare Fall meet began today and will end September 25.
  • Chalk: Favorites won seven of the nine races. It was so chalky, the $.20 Pick 6 paid $36.
  • Handle: $2.9 million.
  • Horacio Karamanos won four times on six mounts. Jeiron Barbosa, a strong possibility to be an Eclipse Award finalist for Apprentice of the Year, won twice on board three mounts.
  • No Repeats: Nine trainers won on the 9-race card.
  • Full Replay Show:

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 6: Nucci (Leonel Reyes/Cam Cambolati) won his maiden at 16-to-1. The jockey is having a breakout year. The trainer is of course always identified with 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend A Buck whose connections famously by-passed the Preakness so the New Jersey-born owner could see him race at the old Garden State, a race he won and in which held the biggest purse in U.S. history at that time.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Bombers Galore: The day was filled with bombers taking center stage. Five of the eight winners were sent off 9-to-1 or better.
  • Race 2: Mi Tormenta (Leo Salles/Ross Armata) lit up the board at 46-to-1, the longest shot on the board. The $.20 superfecta returned more than $6,800. The $1 double was over $600. The $1 exacta was $559.80.

The 2021 state fact book was released today. States foaling is always an interesting graph.

Of horses than ran in North America, nearly half were foaled in Kentucky at 48.3% followed by Florida at 7.8%, New York at 7.7%, California at 5.7% and Maryland at 4.1%.

States that had zero: Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Nevada, Hawaii and Alaska. Delaware has an active T-bred racetrack, the others do not.

Del Mar's Summer Meet broke a track record with $579 million bet in 31 racing days. The meet concluded yesterday. That is what happens with big field sizes.

Average attendance was up 16% from 2021.

Certainly one of the most scenic tracks, the "Ship and Win" opportunity proved an irresistible attraction for national connections. A rousing success, 70 trainers won at least once, outsiders took advantage of what was ultimately the largest purse structure in California history.

Another track, more records.

So far, seven yearlings have been sold for over $1,000,000 at the ongoing Keeneland sale. The top price is $2.5 million for a Quality Road colt. Talla Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Woodford Racing bought the colt as a team.

The big boys are in demand as Quality Road, Into Mischief, Gun Runner and Curlin are among those top selling sires.

Sit back because this could be the start of something special.
