Prodigious numbers from Keeneland's first sales day:

Monday marked the first of two sessions of the prestigious Book 1 catalog of the September Sale, and Keeneland sold 114 yearlings for a total of $57,095,000, for an average of $500,833 and a median of $450,000. Total sales were up 48.99 percent from last year’s first session gross of $38,322,000. The average increased 25.46 percent from $399,188 in 2021, and the median rose 38.46 percent from $325,000.

In addition to the day’s healthy results, additional stats spoke to the strength of the session:

  • Nine horses brought at least $1 million for the most seven-figure yearlings sold on Day 1 since 2007.
  • The top 15 highest-priced horses were bought by 11 different buyers.
  • Of the 114 horses sold, 48 brought $500,000 or more.
  • The first horse through the ring today, a son of Medaglia d’Oro consigned by Lane’s End, agent, sold for $850,000 to Talla Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds. The price is the highest for the horse assigned Hip 1 of the September Sale since at least 1999.

Belmont's 2023 Fall Meet likely to be run at Aqueduct.

The ongoing project at Belmont involves the construction of vehicular and pedestrian tunnels that will lead next year to the renovation of Belmont’s three surfaces and likely the installation of a fourth, a synthetic track. The long-term goal is to allow fan access to the infield.
The tunnels and associated infrastructure projects are likely to be completed in time for the 2023 Belmont spring/summer meet to be conducted starting in late April.
The surface renovations are likely to begin following that meet and will likely force the 2023 Belmont fall meet to also be run at Aqueduct. Then there is the construction of a new grandstand at Belmont, for which the financing and time frame have not yet been established.

SECOND LEG OF THE CANADIAN TRIPLE CROWN
PRINCE OF WALES STAKES
Site: Fort Erie
Date: Tuesday, September 13, 2022
Local TV: TSN from 5-6 pm ET
Time: 5:35 pm ET

Ironstone, a deceptively good fourth in the $1 million Queen’s Plate, should be the controlling speed in Tuesday’s $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, the middle leg of the Canadian Triple Crown at Fort Erie.

Can he stay the 1 3/16-mile distance? We shall see.

Post time for the 87th running of the Prince of Wales is 5:35 p.m. Eastern. Carded as the 10th race, it will be broadcast on TSN in Canada from 5-6 p.m.

Ironstone tracked front-running The Minkster through quick fractions in the 1 1/4-mile Plate before hitting the front around the quarter pole. He eventually faded to fourth behind runaway winner Moira, who is skipping the remainder of the Triple Crown.

=================

TRIPLE CROWN:
  • 1. August 21, 2022 -- Queen's Plate -- at Woodbine Racetrack (ON) -- 1 1/4 miles -- $1 million (Ca.) -- WINNER: Moira (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard)
  • 2. September 13, 2022 -- Prince of Wales Stakes -- at Fort Erie Race Track (ON) -- 1 3/16 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)
  • 3. October 2, 2022 -- Breeders' Stakes -- at Woodbine Racetrack (ON) -- 1 1/2 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)

So far, nine horses sold for over $1 million at the Keeneland yearling sale today. The usual stallions are up there but Justify and Gun Runner are hot, hot, hot. That said, two Constitution babies are the top sellers for the session to date.

UPDATE:

On Tuesday, Keeneland sold 106 yearlings through the ring for $56,565,000, for an average of $533,632 and a median of $462,500. The gross was 8.15 percent higher than the $52,300,000 from the second session last year, while the average increased 14.28 percent from $466,964 and the median was 15.63 percent above last year’s $400,000.
Cumulatively, 220 horses sold through the ring have grossed $113,660,000, for an average of $516,636 and a median of $450,000. The total is 25.42 percent above $90,622,000 from the same period last year, while the average is 18.58 percent above last year’s $435,683 and the median is 28.57 percent higher than $350,000 from 2021.
A total of 22 yearlings have sold for $1 million or more during Book 1 this year compared to 11 in 2021.

Fort Erie (Ontario):
  • Handle: $1.9 million.
  • Race 10: Duke of Love (Justin Stein/Josie Carroll) won the 87th edition of the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes which is the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The rider won this race for the first time. The trainer has won this race three times in the past seven years. Duke of Love has more than 900 owners in his partnership. His pedigree screams off-track and that helped him today. Sir for Sure, the morning line favorite, unseated jockey Declan Carroll. The final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown is the Breeders’ Stakes and that will be run October 2 at Woodbine.

Belmont Park is a 5-year plan. Also, first mention of wanting to host a Breeder' Cup. Only if the weather can cooperate in NJ-NY and history has shown that is a liability there for early November.

Now it's the racetrack's turn to begin a renovation process that in the next five years will transform Belmont Park into a state-of-the-art facility built for the realities of racing in the 2020's and beyond.
"It's going to be an incredible complex once we finish," said Glen Kozak, the New York Racing Association's senior vice president of operations and capital projects.

Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Today was the last of seven annual racing dates.
  • Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione with nine wins. He adds to his Mr. Kentucky legacy. This is the second time in three years that he won the title at the European-style track. He has won 28 times the past three years. Among the jockeys who had a difficult meet were Florent Geroux, Ricardo Santana and Rafael Bejarano. John Velazquez failed to hit the board with four mounts. He seems to struggle at this meet.
  • Leading Trainer: Michael Maker with 12 wins.
Keeneland Sales
  • KEENELAND YEARLING SALE: Through three days, 28 horses have been purchased for $1,000,000 or more. The leading sire in that category is Into Mischief with 8 followed by Quality Road with 6.
  • Colts: The top three sold have been colts.
  • Total: $182 million has been spent through three days.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Opening Day: Though NYRA will have different names for the meets, Aqueduct will be the only track to conduct racing for NYRA until Belmont re-opens in or around April.
  • Handle: $7.05 million which is about $500,000 more than last year's Belmont Fall opener.
  • Race 1: Proven Innocent (Jamey Bargery/Jack Fisher) won the opener, a steeplechase, by a head downing the prohibitive 1-to-5 favorite.
  • Race 2: Noah and the Ark (Harrison Beswick/Todd McKenna) obliterated the field by nine lengths as the longest shot on the board at 41-to-1 to win the Grade I Lonesome Glory Handicap. Runnerup was the 1-to-5 favorite. When was the most recent time a comparable set of odds to 41-to-1 won a Grade I in New York? Birdstone in the 2004 Belmont Stakes?

  • Joel Rosario rode two winners. No trainer or other jockey won more than once.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening Day: The meet, which began at 5:00 pm ET, runs September 15th - October 2nd for 14 racing days. Turf racing is projected to return for the Fall Meet (Oct. 30-Nov. 27).
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $195,000+. The winner in the last leg paid $95.72.
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $98,000+

Anytime Churchill Downs is mentioned as a buyer, insiders will cringe. Based on recent history, CDI doesn't have the best track record. Earlier this year. Colonial Downs (VA) was purchased and now add Ellis Park (KY) to the family of CDI tracks. But this news doesn't seem ominous, at least now.

That means CDI will own three of the big five tracks within the Commonwealth of KY. Keeneland and Kentucky Downs are separate while Turfway, Churchill Downs and now Ellis are under the same roof. Ellis, 100 years of age, is within walking distance of Evansville, IN.

By the end of this year, CDI could own T-bred tracks in VA, PA, LA and now three in KY.

California splits its racing dates in two forms: Northern and Southern.

Race dates for 2023 in the northern part of the state -- where many fairs are conducted -- have yet to be revealed. That announcement could be made in October.

Southern Cal is as follows:
  • Santa Anita-- Dec. 26 to June 18, and Sept. 29 to Nov. 5
    • BREEDERS CUP: NOVEMBER 3-4, 2023
  • Los Alamitos from June 23 to July 9, Sept. 15-24, and Dec. 8-17
  • Del Mar from July 21 to Sept. 10 and Nov. 10 to Dec. 3.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $8 million.
  • Race 6: Betsy Blue (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) won as expected. Rice has a good horse with a 17 8-7-1 record including 8 6-1-0 at the Big A. Only once has she not hit the board.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Bugs: Apprentices won the first four races including a natural hat trick by Jeiron Barbosa. Bug riders at Maryland have a strong recent history.
  • Jeiron Barbosa won three straight races. He finished 6 3-1-1. He could be a nominee for Apprentice of the Year in North America.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 3: Frosted Departure (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Kenny McPeek) delivered one of the best performances of the day with a 9 3/4 length win. He annihilated the competition opening up a 7-length lead in the stretch in what was a close battle.
Los Alamitos (California):

A 60-1 shot just won race 4 at Gulf. The Pick 5 will either be enormous or pay out to 4 out of 5 winning bets.

Meanwhile Luis Saez just hit a natural hat trick to start the day at New York. The final leg was 12-1 for Todd Pletcher.

  • Charlie Appleby shipped three horses from Europe and each won including two at Woodbine.
  • Steve Asmussen needs 105 victories to be the first North America trainer with 10,000 lifetime wins.
  • Heriberto Figueroa had a dream day at Gulfstream with two massive bombs.
  • Grrrrr: Monmouth and Woodbine sent off key races at near identical times. A little flexibility goes along way.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $11 million.
  • Race 6: Padma (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott), a Godolphin homebred, won his second race with style. A fashionable daughter to Tapit.
  • Race 7: McKulick (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $700,000 Grade 3 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Stakes. The filly is 7 3-3-1.

  • Race 10: Nations Pride (Frankie Dettori/Charlie Appleby), bred in Ireland, romped by more than six lengths to win the $1,000,000 Grade 3 Jockey Club Invitational Stakes. The colt is 9 6-2-0 including 2-for-3 at three NYRA tracks.

  • Junior Alvarado, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez, the latter who won the first three races, all had a trio of victories. The other winners were Frankie Dettori and Javier Castellano who have a few thousand wins combined.
  • John Velazquez was off his mounts though I didn't hear if it was injury or something else. He didn't ride Friday and is scheduled to take a mount Sunday.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 11: Webslinger (Dylan Davis/Mark Casse) won the $500,000 Nownownow Stakes. Oxymore (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown), who had never trained in two prior races, led in the stretch but placed.
  • Race 12: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $45,000.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jaime Rodriguez was perfect on four rides. Going 4 4-0-0 is a rarity.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 1: J's Star Jet (Heriberto Figueroa/Donald Hunt) showed little form in three races at Tampa Bay but today rocked south Florida by winning at 52-to-1 and the longest shot in the board.

  • Race 4: Takecareofbusiness (Heriberto Figueroa/Joel Santiago) gave the jockey his second bomber of the day when the 66-to-1 shot prevailed.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $97,000.
  • Edgard Zayas had three winners.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Card: Filled with stakes.
  • Julien Leparoux-Kenny McPeek nearly pulled off the Oaks-Derby prep double.
  • Race 11: Far and Feisty (Julien Leparoux/Kenny McPeek) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes and with it received 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks.
  • Race 10: Miles Ahead (Martin Garcia/Paul McGee) won the $275,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes.
  • Race 9: Curly Jack (Edgar Morales/Tom Amoss) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at 10-to-1 and with it received 10 points towards entry into the 2023 Kentucky Derby. This is the first 2023 Derby prep. Honed (Julien Leparoux/Kenny McPeek) placed at 54-to-1.
  • Race 8: Played Hard (Joel Rosario/Philip Bauer) won the Grade 3 $400,000 Locust Grove Stakes.
  • Race 7: Bell's the One (Corey Lanerie/Neil Pessin) won the Grade 3 Open Mind Stakes in a reduced field of three.
  • Race 5: Loggins (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) romped in his maiden effort by more than 8 lengths. The $.50 Pick 5 paid more than $147,000. Pick 5's at CD have been outrageous this week. This is a serious horse.

  • Race 4: The $.50 Pick 3 paid $4,590. The $1 double paid a gigantic $926 with 30-1 and 29-1 shots winning.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Closing Day/Record Handle: $97,615,998 was wagered over 64 days and that figure was up 7.4% from 2021,
  • Leading Jockey: Harry Hernandez 79 wins.
  • Leading Thoroughbred Trainer: TIE Joel Berndt and Mac Robertson, 61 wins.

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Ramon Vazquez rode three winners.
  • Race 9: Gandolfini (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert), a $470,000 purchase, debuted to a win and withstood a stewards' review en route.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • William Buick-Charlie Appleby visited from Europe with two horses and each went home winner.
  • Race 7: Mysterious Night (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the $500,000 Grade I Pattison Summer Stakes and earned a berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvy Turf.

  • Race 8: Lady Speightspeare (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Roger Attfield) won the Grade 3 $180,000 Seaway Stakes.
  • Race 9: Modern Games (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the $1.2 million Grade I Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes. The winner is approaching $2 million in lifetime earnings. The Irish-bred is 2-for-2 on North America soil and 6-for-11 worldwide. He earned a berth in the Breeders' Cup FanDuel Mile.

  • Race 10: Last Call (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard) won the Grade I $500,000 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes. The win enabled the connections to a berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

  • Race 12: Canceled by management after the track veterinarian suffered a medical emergency.

  • Mass. Racing?: A few have tried to revive racing in Massachusetts since the demise of the historic Suffolk Downs but all have failed. However, there seems to be some light with a recent proposal from Suffolk's former owner in a small town in the central part of the state. Apparently, this does not need the approval of townspeople, the land is there and connections are in place. Additionally, a small boutique meet -- cited as the New England version of Kentucky Downs (well, to a degree) -- would get a boon from the recently passed sports betting within the state. While Suffolk wasn't Calder, Arlington or Hollywood, other tracks that are shuttered, it did have a history intertwined with the community and at one point drew national broadcasts. The sport is thriving with record handles across America but New England is one of the few areas without an active T-bred facility. Have to start somewhere.
  • Steve Asmussen is 103 wins away from becoming the first trainer in North America to reach 10,000 victories.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Exceeded $9 million.
  • Races 1 and 5: Filled with expensive babies. My favorite type of racing. Looking at young sires especially is a challenge and learning experience if not experiment.
  • Race 6: Forbidden Secret (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) had one of the most impressive kicks of the day. Out for the third time, the 2-year-old colt was bought for just $47,500 but has already earned $57,000+. If this race is an indication, Pletcher may have something big on his hands.

  • Race 9: Faith in Humanity (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) topped the all-Chad Brown trifecta to win the Grade 3 $150,000 Pebbles Stakes. Let's see: Chad Brown. On Turf. Graded Stakes. In New York. Check. Check. Check. Check. It doesn't always happen but his mastery in local turf stakes is impeccable.
  • Jose Lezcano rode three winners.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Closing Day: The Jersey Shore racetrack closed shop for 2022, its 77th season. No more racing at Monmouth is a sign that summer has unofficially ended.
  • Total Handle: $217,243,199 which is an improvement of more than 25% from 2021.
  • Leading Rider: Paco Lopez won 91 times, 46 more wins than his closes competitor. It was his ninth Monmouth title.
  • Leading Trainer: Claudio Gonzalez with 32 wins. Remarkably successful in Maryland, he won his first Monmouth title.
  • Paco Lopez finished a 4-win day 8 4-2-0.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 6: West Coast Cowboy (Edgard Zayas/Saffie Joseph) was the lone first-time starter and won at 5-to-2. I am not sure where West Coast, who went 13 6-5-1 with over $5 million earned, fits on my newbie/recent sire list -- probably under Gun Runner + Justify and slightly behind Violence, but I was waiting to see how this baby performed as he did well in the Florida slop.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 6: Fair Dinkum (Tyler Gaffalione/Joe Sharp) was the lone first-time starter and won the $120,000 MSW.
  • Race 7: Pretty Mischievous (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won the $120,000 MDW. Keep an eye on this daughter to Into Mischief.

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 9: Ganadora (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $75,000 Dark Mirage Stakes. A $1,000,000 purchase, Baffert's son to Quality Road is 4 3-0-0 but 2-for-2 in Baffert's stable.

Assiniboia (Manitoba):
  • Extension: The meet has been extended one day. The finale is now Wednesday.
