Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Between $19.5 and $20 million.
  • Jackpot: The Pick 6 was nailed for over $159,000.
  • Joel Rosario registered a hat trick with a 3-win day.
  • Tyler Gaffalione had two wins. Five wins at Kentucky Downs and Saratoga the past two days, tracks with enormous appeal.
  • Race 1: You're My Girl (Joel Rosario/John Terranova) won the opener by 14 1/2 lengths and it could have been if not eased by the jockey.

  • Race 9: Wicked Halo (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Prioress Stakes by a neck over a 37-to-1 shot. The 3-year-old daughter to Gun Runner is 9 5-0-3 with a perfect 2-for-2 mark at Saratoga
.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. is named on 36 mounts the next three days as the meet closes for the year. That is an enormous total. Fair to say he should win the jockey's title with his current comfortable margin.
Timonium (Maryland)/Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Mike Gorham sent out five horses and finished 5 3-1-0 including two wins at Timonium. He plies his craft in the mid-Atlantic for the most part. He first won a race in 1985 at Suffolk Downs (MA).
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 2: Funkhouser (Abel Cedillo/Doug O'Neill) was sent off the very chalky 3-to-5 favorite and won for fun to break her maiden in her fourth try. Part owner is Erik Johnson of the Colorado Avalanche who is at Del Mar this weekend.

Antonio Fresu picked up a mount at Saratoga for Flavien Prat. I don't know much about the rider but he is Italian-born who was riding in places such as Norway and UAE among other spots.
Now with more info:

Maitha Salem Mohammed Belobaida Alsuwaidi's Group 3-winning sprinter Meraas and his Group 1-winning rider Antonio Fresu will make their North American debuts on Saturday at Saratoga in Race 7, a six-furlong optional-claimer for 3-year-olds and upward.
“I'm really looking forward to riding for the first time in the U.S. Obviously, Saratoga has a lot of history and it's a beautiful track. I'm looking forward to seeing it,” said Fresu, who captured last year's Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan Racecourse from the outermost post 13 aboard Zenden.
Trained by Chad Summers, Meraas, who sports a ledger of 14-5-1-1, was last seen taking the Group 3 Al Shindagha Sprint in rein to Fresu in February at Meydan for former conditioner Musabbeh Al Mheiri.

the only question about Belmont pedestrian/vehicle tunnel would be how does that affect the arena piece of Belmont Park, ie UBS Arena (Islanders)

I didn't locate anything specific to the arena and potential obstruction to the arena. My guess is once the hockey season is underway, there may be something topical. With horse racing interests at Belmont, it may be tougher to get info from those within the sport who have first-hand experience.

Virginia Joy wins the Flower Bowl over 1/5 favorite War Like Goddess. Beat by tactical speed.

Kentucky Downs switches Sunday card to Monday tentatively; more updates to follow, it's only a limited festival date card through next weekend; Sunday to Labor Day card will be made no later than 6 pm tomorrow; weather will be a factor for the rest of the meet....

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $32.5 million. The all-time handle was broken with over $830 million wagered.
  • Card: 10 of the 13 races held purses of $100,000 or more. The highlight was the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode the entire card and finished 13 4-1-3. A solid testimony to his craft.
  • Dylan Davis is 22 6-6-3 his past three riding days. Strong numbers for someone not getting the best horses.
  • Race 4: Annapolis (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) blitzed the small field in a gate-to-wire tune-up in the Grade 3 $200,000 Saranac Stakes. Annapolis was sent off 1-to-9. He is a 3-year-old son to War Front.

  • Race 10: Virginia Joy (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) wired the field and won the $800,000 Flower Bowl Stakes by a neck over War Like Goddess (Joel Rosario/Bill Mott) who fell to 11 8-1-1. Brown won this race for the seventh time which is more than any other trainer. The 5-year-old mare was bred in Germany. She has been formally invited to the Breeders' Cup Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf.

  • Race 11: Olympiad (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the Grade 1 $1,000,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes. The 4-year-old Speightstown colt is 12 8-1-1 and officially crossed the $2 million mark earned. The colt is 7 6-1-0 since Alvarado picked up the mount in 2022. Next stop: Breeders' Cup Longines Classic.

Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Weather/Card: After the seventh race, the day was shortened due to severe weather in the area. Among the canceled races was the $1,000,000 Mint Million Stakes.
  • Michael Maker won with his first three starters. Each winner was in a Maiden Special Weight.
  • Dates of the Meet: September 1-3-4-8-10-11-14.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $26 million.
  • Race 4: Go Joe Won (Jose Valdivia/Paula Capestro) won the $125,000 Shared Belief Stakes as the longest shot on the board at 21-to-1. The 3-year-old ridgling won by a nose and also sat through, figuratively, stewards' review. Capestro has been training for nearly 30 years and this is among her biggest wins which includes three stakes at Del Mar. The race finished 1-2-3-4-5 in a field of five and among the defeated were two Bob Baffert starters and one formerly trained by him.

1662255495560.png
  • Race 6: National Treasure (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) won the $80,000 MSW in a scintillating debut. Sent off at 3-to-1, the $500,000 son to Quality Road beat stablemate Massimo (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) who placed. Baffert is 38% this year with 2-year-olds, about 14% better than his career record. Velazquez and Baffert as a team are 7 6-0-1 with 2-year-olds making debuts on a fast track in sprints. Among the defeated was Don Corleone (Mike Smith/Simon Callaghan) who cost $1.2 million but showed no energy in his debut.

  • Race 7: Hong Kong Harry (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Del Mar Mile Stakes. The Irish-bred is 12 8-2-1 which includes a 5 4-1-0 mark in the US and has become a multiple graded stakes winner. D'Amato has been a turf specialist in southern Cal.

  • Race 9: Slow Down Andy (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Del Mar Derby. The 3-year-old son to Nyquist tried turf for the first time in eight starts and obviously enjoyed it.

  • Race 10: Flightline (Flavien Prat/John Sadler) devoured the competition in the $1,000,000 Grade I Pacific Classic by almost 20 lengths in a near track record time of 1:59.28 (tenth of a second off). That is also unofficially 62 lengths of victories in five career races: 5 5-0-0. Flightline and connections are invited to the Breeders' Cup Longines Classic because of this win. Sadler wo nthis race for the fourth time in the past five years.

  • Race 11: Gold Phoenix (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the $300,000 Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap. The 4-year0old Irish-bred is 8 3-3-2 lifetime but took a dramatic step up in class to win this race. With the win, the connections are invited to the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf. Once again, D'Amato has a proficiency on turf racing in southern Cal.

I hope people realize what a special treat this athlete is and has become. As someone who doesn't get wowed often, I can say that only Songbird in the past 10 years has resonated with me from Day One like Flightline.

If we do get Life Is Good vs. Flightline vs. others, we could see something electrifying.

You know you’re witnessing a blowout race when there’s only one horse in the broadcast frame coming down the stretch.
When there’s only one horse in the frame at the midway through the race? That’s when you know you’re watching history. At Saturday’s TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar, Flightline did just that, finishing the 1.5-mile dirt track in an astounding 1:59.28—barely missing out on the track record by a tenth of a second.
But it’s not just the how fast Flightline ran. It’s how quickly he pulled away from the field. The the huge morning line favorite (1/5) was able to essentially jog to the finish line without any competition.
It’s a race that looks even wilder that it sounds.

It was stated here prior to the meet that 2022 would be something unparalleled and today was confirmation. A beautiful bucolic setting matched with incredible equine stars and connections that are amongst the true greats. The weather was ideal throughout. Maybe a minor hiccup with some grades stakes not being deep but congrats to everyone including the handicappers. Saratoga as a destination has few equals in any sport.

Chris Griffin, recently of Parx and prior to that Sam Houston and Portland Meadows, will become the main track caller at Aqueduct. Frank Imbriale is reducing his NYRA role but will call whenever Belmont operates in 2023.

Did I miss something? Belmont is having their meet at Aqueduct?
Extensive renovations at Belmont (racetrack) with additions such as a pedestrian tunnel to the infield, winterizing the grandstand and possibly adding a synthetic course to the dirt and two turf ovals.

Longterm is the closing of Aqueduct to racing but that is not confirmed.

Independent, NYRA is seeking $450 million in bonds, too.

Belmont should re-open in the Spring.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Penultimate Day: The 40-day meet wraps tomorrow. Tomorrow could be a horrendous day with weather. A dismal way to end a superb meet.
  • Handle: $26 million.
  • Race 11: Leave No Trace (Jose Lezcano/Phil Serpe) shocked the audience with a 14-to-1 win in the $300,000 Grade I Spinaway. Serpe has been training since the 1980s and though he has a smaller stable, he is having perhaps his best year based on percentages to date, He last won a Grade I in 1993.

  • Race 10: La Victoria (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) was elevated to victory following a lengthy review involving original winner Succulent (Dylan Davis/David Donk) who was placed third.
  • Jose Gomez had three winners. He may be a finalist for Apprentice Jockey of the Year. While Maryland has yet another good assortment of bugs but Gomez is competing on a bigger stage.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Canceled: Heavy rains from the prior day.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $20 million.
  • Race 11: The $.20 Pick 6 was hit for $210,000.
  • Race 9: Lieutenant Dan (Juan Hernandez/Steven Miyadi) was sent off the favorite and won the $150,000 Grade 2 Green Flash Handicap. The win was part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series to the Turf Sprint. The 6-year-old California-bred is 18 9-4-4 but last raced in the 2021 Breeders' Cup. The layoff was no concern. Incredibly consistent, he is 5-3-0 in his last eight starts.

  • Race 8: Traegar (Mike Smith/Mark Glatt) was out for the second time and won at 18-to-1. Among the beaten was Hopkins (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) who finished second at 1-to-2.
  • Race 5: Midnight Memories (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes.
  • Race 1: Huntingcoco (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert) and Carla (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) finished 1-2 in the $80,000 MSW opener. The winner was sent off 7-to-1 and soundly defeated the competition with stablemate runner up sent off at 3-to-5.
  • Bob Baffert went 12 3-5-0 the past two days. Baffert entered three races today and won twice. The one loss was with Hopkins, his $900,000 starter out for the second time who was sent off 1-to-2 today, but placed for the second straight career outing.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Record Handle: $878,211,963 was bet during the 40-day meet. The figure was the largest in the 159-year history of the track. Field sizes were respectable and other than today's dismal finale, weather was generally favorable to exceptional. That said, and as mentioned prior to the meet's start, there was an element of heightened interest in this meet by handicappers and essentially anyone connected. The barns of Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher especially were of interest and the pair battled for supremacy throughout. One of the best meets in the world and it was met with exceptional plaudits.
  • Handle: Roughly $22 million.
  • Final Day: Flavien Prat made a solid impression during the meet in his first try in New York. His 40 wins was tied for second highest. He was 9 4-2-0 today.
  • Race 11: Forte (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $300,000 Grade I Hopeful Stakes. The 2-year-old Violence colt was out for the third time. He was a relatively cheap purchase of $110,000 by Mike Repole (Vitamin Water) and Vinny Viola (Florida Panthers).

  • Race 3: Emaraaty (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Bernard Baruch Handicap.

  • Leading Jockey: Irad Ortiz, Jr.
  • Leading Trainer: Chad Brown with a narrow 4-win advantages over Todd Pletcher, the latter who won three times today.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Prices: A handicapper's dream for some. Eight times in 11 races was the favorite defeated.
  • Race 11: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $16,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $96,000.
  • Race 10: Kitodan (Gerardo Corrales/Eric Foster) won the Grade 3 $750,000 Big Ass Fans Dueling Grounds Derby.
  • Race 9: Vergara (Joel Rosario/Graham Motion) won the $500,000 Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Oaks.
  • Dates of the Meet: September 1-3-5-8-10-11-14.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $15,5 million.
  • Mike Smith is in a bit of a groove having won three times on eight mounts the past two days.

$8,604,332,789 bet on US racing through August (that does not count the final days of Saratoga's record-breaking meet which ended yesterday).

The $8.6 billion mark is up slightly from 2021 but an increase of 17% from 2020 and more than 10% from 2019.

The numbers in many categories from 2022 and 2021 were near identical with the sharpest improvements in purses. The numbers from 2022 to 2021 show almost 11% rise.

One negative in the handicapping columns has been field size. The decrease is noticeable as it was with much of New York's graded stakes parts of this year.

The comparisons from 2022 to 2019 are as follows:

Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Handle: $6,512,667 bet sets track record for one-day handle.
  • Card: The penultimate day of racing and the card is solid. (ongoing). Many big-name connections entered in races. Six races with purses $100,000 or more.
  • Irad Ortiz. Jr. finished his day 6 5-1-0. He is a multi-winner of the North America Jockey of the Year and currently leads North America in wins in 2022. Ortiz scored a natural hat trick beginning in race 2 and then won consecutive stakes races that were the two biggest on the card.
