KENTUCKY DOWNS

Kentucky Downs has drawn its opening day card for Thursday, September 1.

Kentucky Downs' all-grass meet runs Sept. 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 14.

This meet is arguably the most anticipated for handicappers due to quality of horses, purses, field depth and European style turf racing among other attractions.

SARATOGA today (Sunday, August 28)

The Ballerina is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race for the Filly & Mare Sprint Division.

Four MSW races at $105,000 a pop is appealing but for those of us who enjoy the baby races and how pedigree factors the first and sixth are especially of interest.

Fox Sports 1 has full card coverage from 1:00 pm - 6:30 pm ET.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $22 million. More than $77 million was wagered on the track the past two days.
  • Javier Castellano won three times. The Hall of Famer is winning at an 18% clip this meet which is third highest of the 18 jockeys with more than two wins.
  • Race 1: Xigera (Julien Leparoux/Phil Bauer) was sent off the favorite and romped by more than five lengths. The win gave the mid-30s trainer a stunning 10 6-1-0 (60%/70%) record this meet. Saratoga isn't supposed to be this easy.
  • Race 6: The Great Maybe (Javier Castellano/Cherie DeVaux) wired the field and won by more than eight lengths. The daughter to Upstart was the most expensive filly in the race at $425,000.

  • Race 9: Goodnight Olive (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) improved to 6 5-1-0 after winning the Grade I $500,000 Ballerina Handicap which is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race. The 4-year-old Ghostzapper filly tried graded stakes for the first time and likely because of that was sent off at 5-to-1 despite the powerhouse connections.

  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 returned over $202,000. Aided immensely by a 25-to-1 shot winner in the finale.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 10: Indiantown (Jeremy Rose/Graham Motion) was sent off the even-money favorite and won the finale by a neck in a wildly entertaining race. It was the third try for the Verrazano colt. It was Rose's only mount which sent a signal as is the norm for named riders who have a solo mount and that being the finale. Owner Isabelle de Tomaso, in her 90s, is the daughter of the Haskell Invitational namesake and her husband was famous for his role in automobiles.

Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Race 2: Bret's At Caddies was entered to race for the 100th time. The 11-year-old Maryland-bred is 99 22-26-10. Few horses these days win 22 times. He was eventually scratched for this race. #100 is pending.
  • Paulo Lobo is sizzling at the meet with marks of 20 11-3-3 (55%/85%).
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph won three times as part of a 4-win day (also one at Saratoga). Three wins came in about a half hour (two here and one in NY). Joseph is the leading trainer at the meet.
  • Miguel Vasquez won with his first three mounts. Yesterday, he couldn't buy a win going 11 0-2-5. He is the leading rider at the meet.
  • Race 9: Twelve Volt Man (Edwin Gonzalez/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) won the Miami Shores Handicap after a 17-month layoff and the time in the hands of leading trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr.
Ellis (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Today concluded the meet. Onto Kentucky Downs.
  • Total Handle: $49.3 million over 23 days. The average mark of more than $2,1 million doubled the 2015 total. This is the track's 100th year,
  • Leading Jockey: Gerardo Corrales with 22 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: John Ortiz with 12 wins, one more than both Steve Asmussen and Brad Cox.
  • No Repeats: All eight races had different jockeys and trainers winning today.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 1: Quickly Park It (Jessica Pyfer/Sean McCarthy), a 2-year-old California-bred filly, was the longest shot on the board at 32-to-1 and narrowly held on in a vigorous battle to win an $80,000 MSW.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $5.6 million.

A little story growing to possible seismic levels from Prairie Meadows (IA) in which Tyler's Tribe (Kylee Jordan/Timothy Martin) won a $100,000 race Saturday night by more than 18 lengths. The 3-year-old gelding is 4 4-0-0 lifetime and has won those four races by more than 53 1/4 lengths. Night racing in Iowa may not be mainstream but this son to Sharp Azteca is being considered for a Breeders' Cup berth, specifically the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Tyler's Tribe
was 1-to-9 on the board (actually 1-to-20). The horse is named for an owner's grandson who is battling leukemia.

Jordan is a 20-year-old apprentice who has ridden all four starts.

There are 17 graded stakes this week (Wednesday through Tuesday). Saratoga's handle could possibly beat last year's record handle by 8%. The meet closes Monday.

Flightline has been installed as the 1-to-5 favorite in the Pacific Classic. That is tied for the lowest morning line odds in the history of the race with Cigar's 1-to-5 in 1996 when he tried to set a North America record for this class with 17 straight wins. And we know how that went!

Flightline is 4 4-0-0 lifetime and has won those races by a combined 33 1/2 lengths.

  • Steve Asmussen is 121 wins away from 10,000.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $12 million. Five days remain for what will go down as a very historic meet. Once handle is tallied, this will be an all-time record.
  • Dylan Davis had an exceptional day with three winners. Junior Alvarado and Flavien Prat rode two winners apiece.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $52,000.
  • Race 9: Boppy O (Dylan Davis/Mark Casse) won the $175,000 Grade 3 With Anticipation Stakes at the imposing odds of 23-to-1. Boppy O is the first progeny from freshman sire Bolt d'Oro to win a graded stakes.

  • Race 5: The Big Grey (Dylan Davis/Randi Persaud) gave the trainer his second win with his last 146 starters at Saratoga covering nine years.
  • Race 3: Closethegame Sugar (Jose Ortiz/Adam Rice) gave the trainer a second win with his second starter this meet, his third win with his past five starters but just his 5th win with 36 sent out in 2022. Ortiz is married to Rice's sister. The combo won earlier in the meet with Oxymore who was later sold in a private purchase with Chad Brown becoming trainer.
  • Spreading The Wealth: No trainer had more than one win today.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 7: Bound by Destiny (Jeremy Rose/Anthony Pecoraro) won the $75,000 Blue Hen Stakes by more than five lengths. The 2-year-old filly is 3 3-0-0 lifetime. In her first start she won by 14 lengths and then got up for a win just in time last time out. That is quite the catchy name for a horse race in Delaware. A Blue Hen is a mare who consistently produces top-notch foals.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won three times on board five mounts. The 68-year-old jockey is the sixth winningest jockey in North America annals (since such records were kept).
  • David Haldar also rode three winners. Haldar won for the first time in 2019, when Perry Ouzts was 64 years of age,

Bob Baffert has six maidens spread over two days at Del Mar (Friday and Saturday) but the one that caught my eye is Gandolfini who is a Justify colt in Race 6 on Saturday. The colt is on the AE list and therefore may not run but the New York-foal is of particular interest as Justify babies have become hot.

Baffert is 36% this year with 2-year-olds which is the second best mark (topped only by the improbable 52% in 2018) in his career.

He is 26% with first-time starters which is slightly better than his career average.

Massimo could be the one to beat in that race. Second time out, son to Uncle Mo.

Race 8 at Saratoga on Saturday: Instant Coffee and Juan Valdez are both out for the first time. Something is brewing there.

Medaglia d'Oro runs in the bloodlines of both.

Kentucky Downs is underway. Two races in, Tyler Gaffalione won both races. He excels in Kentucky.

The opener was a $150,000 MSW. That is the state of the sport right now. Exceptional purses at this track.

Now 3 2-1-0 through three races.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Jose Ortiz had a monster day going 8 4-1-0. He seems to be riding somewhat more confidently since he announced a switch of agents. Incredibly consistent, he is 18 or 19% each of the past six years.
  • Dylan Davis placed in four straight races. I don't recall seeing that oddity on any card. The past two days, he is 15 4-6-1. That is a hot stretch.
  • Race 10: Be Your Best (Jose Ortiz/Horacio De Paz) won the $150,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes.
  • Race 5: W W Fitzy (Kendrick Carmouche/Robertino Diodoro), an Illinois-bred, won. How often do Illinois breds win or even enter at Saratoga?
  • Suspensions: Joel Rosario (Aug. 28 to Sept. 1), Javier Castellano (Aug. 31 through Sept. 2) and Irad Ortiz, Jr. (Aug. 31 to Sept. 2) all served suspensions this week resulting from infractions earlier this meet. All three have won Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey of the Year.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening Day: Arguably the most popular meet with handicappers due to low takeout, deep fields, high purses, talented equine athletes and prosperous connections but the unique European-style all-turf course is perhaps most appealing.
  • 2022 Calendar: Sept. 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 14.
  • Handle: $9.7 million.
  • Race 9: Law Professor (Julien Leparoux/Rob Atras) won the $400,000 FanDuel Tapit Stakes at 9-to-1. The $.50 tri paid over $1,800.

  • Tyler Gaffalione was the riding star of the day, especially early, as he won three of the first four races including two photo finishes one by a neck and another by a nose. He finished the day 9 3-2-0.
  • Michael Maker entered seven races and won three. He finished 11 3-1-0.
  • Gulfstream Connections: Edgard Zayas-Saffie Joseph, Jr. teamed four times and went 4 2-0-1.
  • Maiden Special Weight: Three races held purses of $150,000.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $9 million.
  • Hector Berrios rode two winners. He is having a good meet in his return to southern Cal, following a stay in south Florida.

NYRA reported some financial and construction news today. The Saratoga meet has been wildly successful and though total handle was not revealed, the accumulative NYRA take has been $1.7 billion in 2022. Saratoga will likely have handled over $800 million when the meet concludes Monday.

Average daily handle is $13,065,724,

BELMONT
Also, the desire to add a synthetic course at Belmont is raised yet again. If completed, Belmont will probably (I can't think of another) become the first track in the world to have four surfaces (two turf, dirt and synthetic). The synthetic could be used for winter racing and off-the-turf changes.

Among the upcoming renovations which will keep Belmont dark until possible April 2023 will be the construction of a pedestrian and vehicular tunnel to the infield.

NYRA is seeking $450 million in bonds to install new grandstands -- probably to winterize the facility. If so, others have led the opinion that consolidation of racing at Aqueduct and Belmont would become likelier.

Bob Baffert has a $950,000 first-time starter owned in part by Michael Lund Petersen going in the opener on Sunday at Del Mar. Carla is a 2-year-old daughter to Medaglia d'Oro.

the only question about Belmont pedestrian/vehicle tunnel would be how does that affect the arena piece of Belmont Park, ie UBS Arena (Islanders)

Antonio Fresu picked up a mount at Saratoga for Flavien Prat. I don't know much about the rider but he is Italian-born who was riding in places such as Norway and UAE among other spots.

That was an old-fashioned whoopin' in the Saratoga opener. Track caller estimated a 10 length win for the first time starter. Joel Rosario on board. New York bred. Won for fun doesn't cut it. The filly was eased; otherwise, the margin would have been greater.
