Bob Baffert has five horses debuting the next three days at Del Mar.

The priciest on Thursday is Sam Malone who cost $300,000 in 2021 at the Kentucky yearling sale.

However, even that pales in comparison to Hejazi, the $3,550,000 Bernardini colt who was bought at the mid-Atlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training earlier this year. The horse, bred in New York, is the highest price paid at auction in Maryland's history.

Baffert is a staggering 56% 9 5-0-4 with male 2-year-olds in 2022.

Hejazi will be ridden by Mike Smith in race 5 on Saturday.

  • Chad Brown was arrested for a domestic incident at his home outside of Saratoga. The details are displeasing to say the least and not characteristic of someone who seems so disciplined in his craft. He has won Outstanding Trainer in North America four consecutive years until Brad Cox ended the streak in 2020 with the first of his two straight.
An article released the following days includes:
According to what was read during an arraignment in City Court on Thursday, Brown was accused of pushing a woman down a staircase at his house in Saratoga Springs, pinning her to the floor and trying to choke her before throwing her out.
An Albany Times Union story said the police report filed with judge Francine Vero indicated the accuser had been a former girlfriend of Brown who repeatedly tried to reach the trainer Wednesday. The report said she used a key she had been given to get into the house around 11 p.m. EDT and found Brown in bed with a woman. The Times Union story said that was when the physical confrontation began.
Brown’s attorney Joseph Gerstenzang told Vero, “The wrong person was arrested here,” according to the Times Union. “It was a home invasion. She entered my client’s home. (She) in fact was the perpetrator.”

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Approached $16 million,
  • Race 10: Sell Something (Trevor McCarthy/Gary Sciacca) won the finale at 26-to-1 to complete an extraordinary succession of late races on the card. The $1 double paid $671.50 which I believe is the biggest at a NYRA track this year. The $1 Pick 3 returned nearly $3,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $94,000.
  • Race 9: Golden Rocket (Jose Gomez/Patricia Farro) finished with a furious rally to win the New York Stallion Series Stakes -- Statue of Liberty Division -- at 33-to-1. The winner was the longest shot on the board. Gomez, currently riding with a 5-pound bug allowance, lost that advantage by rule since this was a stakes. He is the only client to Hall of Fame rider, now agent, Angel Cordero -- at least at last check. Farro trains in Philly and New Jersey among other spots and this was her first Spa starter of 2022.

  • Race 8: Warrior Johny (Junior Alvarado/Phil Bauer) romped by more than 8 lengths. Bauer, a Kentuckian based generally near his home and still in his 30s, is 7 4-1-0 at the meet. His win today was the 100th of his young career.

  • Race 7: Charlie Chrome (Irad Ortiz, Jr./David Jacobson) didn't win but was the trainer's first starter since 2018. Training since the 1970s, he had retired but has since reevaluated his stance. He owned this horse.
Horseshoe Indiana (Indiana):
  • Graphics: Amongst the best in North America. Easy to read and good color scheme. White on black will always get a thumb's up and the brown/copper completes the display.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $11 million.
  • Race 1: Peso (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the opener in his second start. The 3-year-old son to Pioneerof the Nile is owned by Baffert's wife Jill and cost the small sum of $90,000. The winner debuted to an 11th place finish earlier last month. The connections sat through a brief but nullified inquiry/objection today.
  • Race 5: Abinadi (Edwin Maldonado/Luis Mendez), in his third start, defeated among other two Bob Baffert first-timers who finished second and third. Sam Malone (Abel Cedillo) was claimed after the race by new trainer John Sadler and new owner Hronis.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Over $23 million.
  • Race 10: Oxymore (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the finale. The horse was out for the second time and won his first race in July as he wired the field at 11-to-1 with the rider riding for his brother-in-law Adam Rice. Through a private sale, Brown became the trainer.
  • Race 8: Leader of the Band (John Velazquez/John Servis) won the $135,000 Summer Colony Stakes and gave the Philadelphia-based trainer his first win at Saratoga in 22 years since Jostle won the Alabama under Mike Smith.
  • Race 6: Let's Go Big Blue (Eric Cancel/George Weaver), a 2-year-old son to Cairo Price, gave owner Bill Parcells a victory with a debut performance. August Dawn, the ownership name, is 3 2-0-1 at Saratoga this meet and has won four of eight since mid-May in the US.

  • John Velazquez had quite the day going 8 3-2-1. He had lost with his last 31 rides, his most recent win coming August 5. Velazquez has won at Saratoga more than any other rider in history with 997 victories.
  • Joel Rosario was off his mounts due to an illness.
  • Chad Brown had three winners including one at Monmouth.
Remington (Oklahoma):
  • Opening Night: First raceday of the meet.
  • Handle: $3 million.
  • Race 8: Rated R Superstar (David Cabrera/Federico Villafranco) won the $175,000 Governor's Cup. The 9-year-old has won more than $1.7 million with a lengthy resume that is punctuated by a 63 12-10-8 mark.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $62,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over half a million dollars, specifically $555,195.

  • Post times: The St. Louis Derby in Illinois and the Canadian Derby in Edmonton were sent off one minute apart, the former at 11:01 and the latter at 11:00 Eastern Time.
  • Steve Asmussen's barns have been cold. He has won just twice with 44 starters since August 14. He has raced in New York, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The all-time winningest trainer in North America, he remains 134 wins shy of 10,000 lifetime.
  • Prank (Todd Pletcher), who wowed me and many others with a debut thrashing at Saratoga on July 31, is sidelined due to injury. The Into Mischief filly has a hairline fracture of her left Too bad, she looked the part of a future champ rather immediately. Hopefully, she has a full recovery. She had surgery yesterday. The original schedule had her pegged for racing September 4 at Saratoga.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $32 million.
  • Race 10: Nest (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) was dominant in winning the Grade I $600,000 Alabama Stakes by more than four lengths. The 3-year-old daughter of Curlin has earned over $1.7 million. She is 9 6-2-1 She was purchased for $350,000 two years ago and has an unlimited future. And that is one helluva winners' circle picture.
1661044290621.png

  • Race 8: Haughty (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) wired the field to win the $150,000 Grade 2 Lake Placid. Haughty is a 3-year-old daughter to Empire Maker.

  • Race 5: Echo Again (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) debuted to a terrific win in a $105,000 MSW as the prohibitive favorite. The future of this Gun Runner colt is bright to say the least. The longtime jockey-trainer team has separated the past few months but rejoined efforts as the rider replaced the ill Joel Rosario.

  • Luis Saez rode three winners. This could be the year he is an Eclipse Award finalist.
  • Joel Rosario (ill) and bug rider Jose Gomez were off their mounts today. Replacement riders won four times today including three for Rosario who obviously had live mounts today.
  • John Velazquez had 998 wins at Saratoga, most of any rider in history.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: $3.8 million.
  • Race 9: Informative (Dexter Haddock/Uriah St. Lewis) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Phillip Iselin Stakes at 14-to-1, the second largest price on the board. Among the defeated were horses trained by Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: Exceeded $4 million which is a meet high.
  • Brittany Russell went 7 3-3-1 the past two days including back-to-back victories today in which her husband Sheldon rode both her starters. However. in the finale, the duo had a 3-to-5 shot that was last and near the back of the pack for too long and after a strong rally finished second by a head.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 7: Action Warrior (David Boraco/Arnaud Dobber) paid $132.00/$52.60/$25.80 as the longest shot in the field of 11. The $1 exacta was over $1,000. The $.50 tri returned nearly $8,000. The $.10 super also paid close to $8,000.
FanDuel (Illinois):
  • Handle: Exceeded $1,000,000.
  • Race 8: Rattle N Roll (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Kenny McPeek) won the $250,000 St., Louis Derby. Sent off the favorite, the 3-year-old colt was an also eligible for this year's Kentucky Derby.

Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $24 million.
  • Race 8: Spendarella (Tyler Gaffalione/Graham Motion) won the Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Oaks. The New York-bred is a multiple graded stakes winner with her lone loss coming at Ascot in England.

  • Race 7: Kangaroo Court (Abel Cedillo/Tim Yakteen) won an $80,000 MSW by over 14 lengths. The second-time starter was the overwhelming pick at 1-to-5 but that was still a whoopin'. "They will need to sprout wings to catch him....," as called by the track announcer.

  • Race 5: Hejazi (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) finished second in his debut. The $3.55 million purchase, the largest ever in the state of Maryland's racing history, He is a New York-bred and a 2-year-old son to Bernardini.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $7.2 million.
Century Mile (Edmonton, AB):
  • Handle: Neared $2,000,000 bet ($1.93m), the most in Alberta province history. The former record was set in 1980.
  • Race 11: Tone It Up (Rafael Zenteno, Jr./David Nicholson) won the $100,000 Century Casino Oaks by a neck at 7-to-1.
  • Race 10: Great Escape (Rico Walcott/Robertino Diodoro) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Canadian Derby at 5-to-2. Post time

1661081121207.png
  • Race 9: At Attention (Antonio Reyes/Barbara Heads) won the $100,000 Century Mile Handicap at 7-to-1 and topped a $1 tri that returned over $1,000.

  • Race 8: Infinite Patience (Antonio Reyes/Barbara Heads) won the $100,000 Northlands Distaff Handicap at the overwhelming odds of 1-to-5 in a 7-length victory and a new track record of 1:33.65 for one mile on dirt (though the track opened in 2019).

Muteki (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) debuts in the seventh race at Del Mar today. The 2-year-old daughter to American Pharoah cost $1,000,000 in the March 2022 Ocala, FL sale. She was bought by businessman Charlie Chu under the banner of Baoma Corportation. He has horses almost exclusively with Baffert.

Claudio Gonzalez and Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon entered today tied for meet leader in the Laurel trainer standings. Today is the last day of the meet.

Sanchez-Salomon won the opener. He is a small time trainer who made his bones in New Jersey.

Gonzalez, of course, is Mr Maryland in terms of training titles in recent years.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $22 million.
  • Ill Jockeys: Jose Gomez and Joel Rosario remained off their mounts due to illnesses.
  • Race 1: Pleasant Passage (Tyler Gaffalione/Shug McGaughey) won his debut at 15-to-1, Gaffalione won the feature at Del Mar (CA) yesterday. No jet lag there. The top four finishers were sent off at 15-1, 21-1, 8-1, 13-1.

  • Race 2: Terry Finley, President and CEO of West Point Thoroughbreds and a former Army captain, was presented with a display for winning 1,000 times.
1661127901526.png
  • Race 5: Grand Journey (Irad Ortiz. Jr./Rudy Rodriguez) seemed poised to give the trainer his second win at the meet but was picked up and lost by a neck. The trainer is 1-for-66 this meet.
  • Race 6: Grand Love (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) gave the trainer a much-needed win after a recent skid. He is 3-for-46 since August 14.
  • Race 10: Omar Moreno Hernandez and Manny Franco, two replacement riders for the ill Jose Gomez and Joel Rosario finished 1-2.
  • Leading Jockey and Trainer: Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Chad Brown appear to have the advantage heading into the last couple of weeks of the meet. No surprise in either category.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Closing Day: Today concluded the meet. Laurel is dark until September 30. While 2023 racing dates have yet to be revealed, most likely Laurel runs into April. Timonium (state fair) runs August 26-September 5. Pimlico goes September 9-September 25.
  • Race 10: The meet ended in a dead-heat for the win. That is a fitting thriller.
  • Race 6: Johnyz From Albany (Carlos Lopez/Dale Capuano) won his debut and though wasn't sent off the favorite, the astute handicapper noticed that the trainer is 32% with 1st-timers and 30% with 2-year-olds in 2022.
  • Race 3: A furious finish:

  • Race 2: Vibrant Judy (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) debuted to a nice win. Russell, the trainer, finished the meet at 17% which was a vast improvement from her surprising struggles earlier. She also was in-the-money 55% of the time which is a good figure but that also included some burnt money along the way. As mentioned a few times, a good human-interest story with her husband her main rider. She also has a good collection of owners which is indicative of confidence.

  • Leading Jockey: Jevian Toledo and Horacio Karamanos tied for meet supremacy with 31 wins. It is the seventh title for Karamanos (fourth at Laurel) and tenth for Toledo who has won three of four in Maryland this year. Toledo, who celebrated his 28th birthday the prior day, tied Karamanos in the fifth race following his competitors back-to-back wins in races 3 and 4.
  • Leading Trainer: Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon won the title with a victory today. The Mexico-born trainer won a title for the first time. He was an assistant in New Jersey to Scott Lake and Dane Kobiskie. He entered tied with almost perennial champ Claudio Gonzalez who finished in second place, one win ahead of Dale Capuano.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: More than $18 million wagered.
  • Juan Hernandez rode four winners.
  • Race 7: Home Cooking (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) was sent off the favorite and won by more than 9 lengths. she was one of just two horses with a prior race on her chart. Muteki (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), the $1,000,000 horse, debuted to a disappointing seventh.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $13.6 million.
  • Race 8: Filo Di Arianna (Kazushi Kimura/Mark Casse) won the $200,000 Grade 2 King Edward Stakes.

  • Race 9: Fev Rover (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won a nail-biter in taking home the Grade 2 $240,000 Canadian Stakes.

  • Race 10: Moira (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard), sent off the favorite and the lone filly entered, won the $1,000,000 163rd edition of the Queen's Plate. The winner is 5 4-1-0 and raced in open company for the first time. Her 1 1/4-mile time of 2:01.38 on synthetic established a track record and was the fastest in the long history of the race. She is the 38th filly to win this race, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The Queen's Plate is the oldest continuously run race in North America. The Canadian Triple Crown:
August 21 -- Queen's Plate -- Woodbine Racetrack -- 1 1/4 miles -- $1 million (Ca.)
September 13 -- Prince of Wales Stakes -- Fort Erie Race Track -- 1 3/16 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)
October 2 -- Breeders' Stakes -- Woodbine Racetrack -- 1 1/2 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)

  • Kazushi Kimura rode three winners. The 19-year-old was injured July 22 and sidelined until one ride August 18.
  • Mark Casse entered 15 and finished 2-3-1.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Billing: PA Day at the Races.
  • Card: 14 races of which seven had purses of $100,000. A million total in giveaways.
  • Handle: Exceeded $4.2 million.
  • Chalk: The day began with favorites getting squashed the first three races though only one double digit price. Favorites failed to hit the board in those three races to open the card. However, favorites finished first (five times) or second (five times) the last 10 races.
  • Race 5: Game Seven (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher), a 2-year-old son to Hoppertunity who cost $130,000, debuted to a gate-to-wire 8-length win.

  • Race 7: Remain Anonymous (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Robert Falcone, Jr.) won the $100,000 Teresa Garofalo Memorial Stakes, a fifth win in 22 starts. She defeated Chub Wagon (Silvestre Gonzalez/Regina Brennan) who tasted defeat for just the second time and both losses came in this race including last year's edition (14 12-2-0 record). Chub Wagon had recently been transferred to the stable of Brennan from Guadalupe Preciado due to a difference of opinion on racing schedule (that usually means trainer and owner(s) didn't agree). The reigning Pennsylvania-bred Horse of the Year for 2021, she donned the cover of the DRF today:
1661212821031.png
  • Paco Lopez had three winners on six rides.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., leading rider in North America this year, went 8 2-0-1. He was joined by Frankie Pennington, Mychal Sanchez and Silvestre Gonzalez as 2-time winners.
  • Butch Reid, local training star, had three winners.
  • Todd Pletcher shipped four horses and two won. Michael Pino and Guadalupe Preciado also won twice.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: $4.2 million+ for the second straight day.
  • Favorites Flopped: Only two of the 13 races had a favorite winning.
  • Race 10: Violent Turbulence (Silverstre Gonzalez/Kathy Demasi) won the $200,000 Parx Dash Stakes at 12-to-1. The runner up was a 42-to-1 shot. Two of the longest shots on the board in a field of seven finished 1-2.

  • Race 11: Green Up (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $150,000 Cathyrn Sophia Stakes.

  • Race 12: Best Actor (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes by more than five lengths. Best Actor is 4 3-1-0 lifetime with races at four different tracks. He was purchased for $330,000 two years ago and has surpassed that total in lifetime earnings with this win. Pioneer of Medina (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher), who ran in this year's Kentucky Derby, came up empty and finished last.

  • Todd Pletcher shipped in six horses over the two-day spectacle and three won.

Among the biggest weekends on the NYRA calendar, this is the TV schedule for Saturday's Travers Stakes.

1661127782859.png

Saratoga's record handle is $815 million.

This year's total stands at $626 million with 29 of 40 days in the books.

Since the Travers is approaching Saturday, the total for 2022 should break the mark with relative comfort.

I expect $50,000,000 on Saturday depending on if the weather cooperates as it has for much of this meet.

Off the turf at Saratoga today due to persistent rain overnight.

Race 1 -- steeplechase -- has been cancelled.

Weather for Saturday looks pleasant.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Card/Weather: Overnight rains voided turf racing and canceled the steeplechase opener.
  • Handle: $9.4 million.
  • Race 10: Mariah's Fortune (Tyler Gaffalione/Rudy Rodriguez) gave the trainer his second win at the meet. He is now 70 2-9-8.
  • Race 9: Girl Dad (Luis Saez/Michael Maker) won the $135,000 John's Call Stakes in a good battle.

  • Race 8: Mount Travers -- appropriate name for this week at Saratoga -- (Eric Cancel/Mertkan Kantamaci) won and then was claimed by Jimmy Ferraro in an intense 28-way shake.
  • Race 7: The Prince's Spur (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) gave the jockey his 999th win at Saratoga which increased his all-time record. Following the race Phil Bauer claimed the horse.

  • Race 5: Roderick (Junior Alvarado/Phil Bauer) gave the trainer an impressive 9 5-1-0 mark this meet. The trainer, only in his mid-30s, is having a breakout meet. Bauer lost the horse after the race to Michael Maker in a 4-way shake.
  • Todd Pletcher was the Star of the Day as he sent out three horses and each won. He is the second leading trainer this meet.
  • Joel Rosario returned today from an absence due to illness.
  • Joel Rosario will be suspended three racing days from Aug. 28-Sept. 1 for a riding infraction Aug. 18.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. will be suspended three days from Aug. 31-Sept. 2 for a riding infraction Aug. 18.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 11: The $.50 Pick 5 was an incredible $350,000+.
