  • Michael Maker: Enormous news for winter racing in Maryland as Michael Maker will open a stable with 15 stalls. He is mostly Midwest based but has horses from Texas to Florida to New York. Maker is 79 17-7-10 at Laurel and Pimlico. Look for his horses on turf for the most part.
  • Steve Asmussen is 97 wins away from 10,000.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $6.1 million.
  • Race 1: Attached (Jairo Rendon/Jorge Duarte) was out for the first time and obliterated the field at 14-to-1. It was the trainer's 100th win. The jockey rode at a NYRA track for a rare time.
  • Race 8: Kimari (Joel Rosario/Wesley Ward) overtook Lady Rocket (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Brad Cox) to win the Grade 2 $250,000 Gallant Bloom Stakes. Kimari received a 106 Beyer following the win.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Closing Day: Today was the final day of the
  • Leading Jockey: Jeiron Barbosa, at the age of 18, got his second riding title this year. He could be the leading contender for Apprentice of the Year.
  • Leading Trainers: Dale Capuano, Jamie Ness, John Robb, and Mario Serey Jr. finished in a tie with four wins apiece. Capuano won or shared 18 meet titles at Pimlico between 1988 and 2010, the last time he was leading trainer. Ness led Pimlico for the fourth time and first since 2019. Robb had won four Maryland titles but just one at Pimlico. Serey won a title in Maryland for the first time.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: Hoosier Philly (Edgar Morales/Tom Amoss) was purchased for $510,000 and did not disappoint in her maiden effort. The 2-year-old daughter to Into Mischief could be awaiting bigger things.

Remington Park (Oklahoma):
  • Card: Twelve races, eight stakes which included four at $100,000 or more highlighted by the state's signature race the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby.
  • Handle: Approximately $4 million. Unofficially, it is the second largest handle in track history.
  • C.R. Trout sent out three horses and each returned victorious.
  • Karl Broberg, the second most wins among all trainers in North America this year, also had a 3-win day.
  • Race 11: Rattle N Roll (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) has now earned over $998,000 after a win in the Grade 3 $400,000 Oklahoma Derby. The Connect colt circled the field to win by more than a length. Rattle N Roll entered off a win in the St. Louis Derby at FanDuel (IL). Rattle N Roll was on the Kentucky Derby trail this year but fell one point behind eventual winner Rich Strike, who drew in due to the defection of Un Ojo, on the also eligible list.

  • Race 9: Hits Pricey Legacy (Jose Alvarez/C.R. Trout) took a big step up in class but at 11-to-1 defeated Juju's Map (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox), among others and who was a 1-to-2 morning line, to win $200,000 Grade 3 Remington Park Oaks.

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Closing Day: Today ended the brief meet. Southern Cal racing will be held at Santa Anita September 30 through November 6. Then onto Del Mar beginning November 4.
  • Leading Jockey: Ramon Vazquez won the title with 13 wins which was more than doubled his closest pursuer. Vazquez returned to California from the East coast and won his second riding title this year.
  • Ramon Vazquez finished a historic day going 7 5-0-2. Since Los Al began daytime racing in 2014, no jockey had ever won five races on a single card. He won four straight mounts covering six races.
  • Leading Trainer: Bob Baffert and Peter Miller shared the crown with five wins apiece. It was the sixth time Miller and the 13th time Baffert either led or shared the training title since daytime Thoroughbred racing returned to Los Alamitos in 2014.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Lucky Score (Leo Salles/Vito Armata) pulled a mild shocker to win the $150,000 Grade 3 Vigil Stakes.

Steve Asmussen has 28 entered the rest of this month spanning Churchill Downs, Aqueduct, Louisiana Downs, Remington and Horseshoe Indiana. He is the winningest trainer in North America history and is 97 victories shy of the staggering total of 10,000.

Tuesday at Assiniboia had a similar trend to Monday in that mostly chalk dominated until a bomber won the finale.

Now we have a mandatory payout on losing day. Could it reach seven figures?

Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe from Paris (FS2 9:30-10:30 am ET) will be aired on Fox Sports 2 Sunday. The race is part of the Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Challenge Series. Purse: Approximately $4.85 million.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Alessia (Jose Gomez/Nick Zito) was sent off second-choice and there was a sentiment of optimism that the Hall of Fame trainer may finally get a win but alas, second-to-last place in the opener. It is tough to see Zito's numbers this year 63 0-1-11 and three wins with 159 starters since the start of 2021.
  • Race 4: Happy Sophia (Mike Luzzi/Randi Persaud) gave the veteran jockey his fifth win with his 109th mount in 2022. The win snapped an unofficial losing streak of 80 rides though many were on nearly unwinnable mounts. Luzzi last won April 22.
  • Race 8: Unbridled Bomber (Jose Ortiz/Jimmy Ryerson) won at 18-to-1 and the second largest odds on the board. Did everyone say in unison "How could we let Ortiz go at 18-to-1!?"
  • Race 9: Shadow Dragon (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) debuted to a win at 7-to-1. The rider-trainer form a good combo. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $54,000.

Friday, September 30, 2022
  • Under Review: Laurel 4 and Belmont/Aqueduct 3 were sent off nearly identically and both had inquiries that overturned the original winners.
  • Christophe Soumillon was suspended 60 days for elbowing a jockey who tumbled to the ground in a race in France. I don't believe I have ever seen such usage during a race. He will not ride in the Breeders' Cup from the ruling.
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $9 million.
  • Flavien Prat and Javier Castellano rode two winners. No other jockey or any trainer won more than once.
  • Race 9: The $1 Pick 6 returned more than $56,000.
  • Race 3: The race of the day. Following an inquiry/objection that involved the winner, runner up and fourth place finishers, the original victor was placed fourth. The original finish was tight.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jaime Rodriguez, fresh off North America Jockey of the Week for winning with eight straight mounts (one shy of the all-time record originally set in 1930), had an astonishing afternoon going 8 6-1-0. He rode the entire card (eight races) and had back-to-back wins three times. He won today for five different trainers. Rodriguez is Jamie Ness's number one call but his victories have been with a wide array of trainers including two today for New York-based Christophe Clement.
  • Leading Jockey: Jaime Rodriguez has obliterated the rider standings with 107 winning rides, 65 more than his closest challenger. He is 28% winning and 66% in the money.
  • Leading Trainer: Jamie Ness and his 51 wins.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Opening Day: Today began the meet. Laurel runs almost year-round and will be the lone T-bred track in the state to host live racing until some point in the Spring when Pimlico holds its brief Preakness meet.
Gulfstream Park (Gulfstream):
  • Closing Day: Gulfstream is operating 12 months a year though the current Royal Palm Meet ends October 2. The Pick 6 will have a mandatory payout Saturday that is expected to reach $1.5 million.
  • Sunshine Meet: October 7 into December.
  • Championship Meet: December 26 into early April.
  • Arizona Next Up? Word is that the Stronach Empire is looking to add not one but perhaps two race tracks in Arizona -- Turf Paradise and Arizona Downs -- all based on the Monarch simulcast signal. Complicated but not perplexing. Stronach owns tracks in Maryland, Florida and California among other entities.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Opening Day: Today began the meet.
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $72,000. The sole winning ticket was purchased for $230.40,
  • Juan Hernadez (jockey) and Peter Miller (trainer) won twice.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Slade Jones, at last check 16 years of age, appears to have skills much in advance of his age. While there are never guarantees as jockeys turn from apprentices to journeymen, he looks confident and nothing what could be expected of a teenager.
