And in the most obvious announcement in the history of the world, Santa Anita was awarded the 2023 Breeders' Cup.

The event has come down to two tracks in Kentucky (breeding, history) and two in southern Cal (weather).

Saratoga (New York):
  • Hat Trick: Dylan Davis rode three winners on board four mounts. He entered today 1-for-27 at the meet. He was second in the standings during the recently closed Belmont meet.
  • Handle: In excess of $13 million.
  • Race 10: American Rockette (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) finished with a furious rally to win her debut in a $105k MSW. The race was originally designated for turf but was moved to dirt following a brief spat of rain. Alvarado, who re-re-located to south Florida a few months ago re-re-located to New York.

  • Race 9: Practice Squad (Flavien Prat/Joe Sharp) won the $125,000 Rick Violette Stakes named after the NY-based trained who succumbed to cancer four years ago.

  • Race 6: Jeremy's Jet (Dylan Davis/Paul McEntee) won by eight lengths and flew like a proverbial jet. It was the Ireland-born trainer's first entered horse at the Spa since 2020.
  • Race 4: V Mart (Carlos Olivero/Juan Avila) won by more than eight lengths. From what I can find, is the first time the jockey raced at a NYRA track. The small-time rider has spent the majority of his 20-year riding career in south Florida.
  • Race 1: Up to the Mark (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the opener in style. A $450,000 3-year-old son to Not This Time, the winner made an auspicious debut.

  • Changes: Due to a brief bout of rain, there were changes mid-card which led to confusion on some exotics wagering. As the astute David Grening pointed out:

  • Top Jocks: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (8), Luis Saez (7), Joel Rosario (7) and Jose Ortiz (6) are the winningest riders at the meet. Not much of a surprise.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Gate-to-Wire: Five straight races were basically gate-to-wire. Picking up on the speed bias was in evidence.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Race 6: Deer Creek Road (Chelsey Keiser/Ivan Vazquez) at 32-to-1 eked out a victory against 40-to-1 Blistering Pakshi (Luis Batista/James McDonald) in a battle of bombers that resulted in a $2 exacta worth $1,066. The winning rider hails from the same Ohio-town as Annie Oakley.

Race 1 at the Spa.

A horse owned by Klaravich Stable was sent off the longest shot in the opener and at 11-1. Chad Brown in New York with a horse owned by Klaravich as the longest shot is about as common as a snowstorm in Miami. Too good to be true but sometimes oddities happen.

And just like that, Klaravich's prohibitive entry favorite lost to Todd Pletcher's 19-1.
Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher double paid $168 for every #1 bet. Almost unthinkable.

  • Schedule Changes: Laurel (MD) has canceled Sunday's card due to forecasted heat and will instead race Thursday. Also, post time for tomorrow (Saturday) will change to a 1:50 pm ET opener. Colonial Downs (VA) has canceled Monday's card.
  • Stave Asmussen has won just once with 33 starters since July 17.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Attendance: 22,953.
  • Race 1: Appraise (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) was the longest shot on the board in a field of seven and won the opener by a head. The Irish-bred debuted to something sensational. Brown, one of the top trainers in the world, and owner Klaravich Stables (Seth Klarman), arguably the top ownership in the U.S., gave bettors a unique chance at glory. Bettors who didn't flinch, later exulted.

  • Race 2: Impulsiveness (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher), who showed nothing in a maiden race last month, had a rider switch from John Velazquez to Luis Saez and excelled. The Chad Brown-Pletcher double returned a salty $168.75. A Klaravich-owned entry finished second and fifth, somewhat different feeling than the opener.

  • Race 9: Dolce Zel (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) beat stable-mate Eminent Victor (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) to give the trainer a 1-2 punch in the Grade 3 $175,000 Lake George Stakes.

  • Joel Rosario, Luis Saez, Irad Ortiz, Jr. each rode two winners.
  • Todd Pletcher trained three winners. Chad Brown had two winners.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Ailsa Morrison had a hat trick. It was the first-time the Canadian-born rider scored a three-fer on a card in her young career which began in 2019. It is the time of the year for local riders and/or others will lesser experience to gain opportunity.

  • Handle: $5.5 million.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 5: Justa Warrior (Reylu Gutierrez/John Ortiz), a $150,000 Justify filly, debuted to victory.

  • Brittany Vanden Berg, who has excelled at Illinois tracks in her short training career, is winning at a 56% clip (9 5-1-1) this meet. Her husband Chris Emigh generally rides her horses.
  • John Ortiz leads the meet with six wins. He is 10 6-1-0 (60%/70%). He has been training for about six years and worked under the guidance of Bill Mott and Graham Motion.
Del Mar (California):
  • Record Handle: $23.56 million was wagered which set a track for any opening day. The prior mark was bested by more than $2 million. Record handles abound across America.
  • Opening Day: The 83rd meet began today with a sellout crowd.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 returned more than $93,000. More than $1.3 million existed in the pool. More than $1.2 million existed in the Pick 4 pool. Staggering numbers.
  • Race 8: Balnikhov (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes at 3-to-1. The Ireland-bred gelding was winless in three starts in the US following three wins in eight starts overseas.

  • Race 2: Losing (or winning) by a nose...

  • Hats: Opening day festivities at Del Mar always have a flair of fun in the sun. Winner of the hat contest:

Life is Good just may be the best horse in America currently. Todd Pletcher has this puppy firing in training. Next up could be the August 6 Whitney in New York.

Striking numbers per Equibase:
  • Since 1991, Bob Baffert has saddled the post-time favorite in a stakes race 1262 times - winning 548 (43%) of those races, finishing second 254 times and third 124 times. When starting the post-time favorite in races at Monmouth Park, Baffert wins at a ridiculous 76% (13-of-17) with a $2 ROI of $2.81.
  • Chad Brown has saddled the post-time favorite in a stakes race 683 times - winning 277 (41%) of those races, finishing second 129 times and third 97 times. When starting the post-time favorite in races at Monmouth Park, Brown wins at a 46% clip (74-of-162, ITM 136-of-162) with an ROI of $1.87

  • Chad Brown entered 17 horses and won six times across New York-New Jersey. Brown, a guaranteed Hall of Famer when becoming eligible, was Outstanding Trainer in North America for four straight years from 2016-19.
  • Steve Asmussen is 157 wins shy of becoming the first trainer in North America history to record 10,000 wins following a trio today.
  • New York-New Jersey: $50,000,000 was handled at the two tracks give or take a quarter or two.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $29.6 million.
  • Race 11: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $106,000.
  • Race 10: Robin Sparkles (Javier Castellano/Bruce Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Caress Stakes at 21-to-1 as the second longest price in a field of nine. The horse was bred in New York. That is the first graded stakes win (now confirmed) for Brown in his career in his 20+-year career.

  • Race 5: Nest (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $500,000 Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks in a surprising romp of more than 12 lengths. Sent off the favorite at 4-to-5, she has earned over $1.4 million with a stellar 8 5-2-1 record.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: $19.8 million which was slightly off the record of $20 million+.
  • Attendance: 22,138.
  • Track records: Two track records were set in today's graded stakes. The first snapped a mark set 37 years ago but that lasted slightly more than two hours.
  • Chad Brown was a smashing success going 10 5-2-1 which included wins in four straight graded stakes. He entered in six races.
  • Flavien Prat rode winners in four straight races, all for Chad Brown.
  • Race 8: Highly Motivated (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $400,000 Grade 3 Monmouth Cup. Brown finished 1-2. Highly Motivated covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.53, eclipsing the previous record of 1:46.80 set 37 years ago by Spend a Buck -- a New Jersey storybook figure -- in the Monmouth Handicap (G1) in August 1985. However, this record lasted slightly more than two hours as it was later broken today.

  • Race 9: Lemista (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) $200,000 Grade 3 Matchmaker Stakes. Brown finished 1-2.

  • Race 10: Search Results (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $400,000 Grade 3 Molly Pitcher Stakes.

  • Race 11: Adhamo (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $600,000 Grade I United Nations Stakes. A bomber placed at 72-to-1.

  • Race 12: Cyberknife (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Haskell Stakes. He won by a head in track record time of 1:46.24 for 1 1/8 miles over Taiba (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) breaking the figure set earlier in the day. The winning horse is named after a medical device used to treat prostate cancer which the New Jersey-born owner of the horse, Al Gold, was recently diagnosed. Cyberknife, a son of Gun Runner and who has now earned over $1.5 million, has won both races he has entered since finishing 18th in the 2022 Kentucky Derby. This was part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Series. The battle of Jack Christopher (Chad Brown) vs. Taiba (Bob Baffert) was overshadowed.

  • Simulcast Feed: Good presentation. Fun colors and vibe representing the Jersey Shore. The one suggested change is yellow on sky blue is not a good match for numbers.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgar Perez rode a natural hat trick. The former Illinois-based jockey is tied for third in wins at this meet. He is a good rider who broke his maiden at Calder (FL) over 10 years ago.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Simulcast Feed: I like the colors. Dark red with black and white is easy on the eyes.
  • Card: Post time was moved to earlier in the day due to heat. The track is in the Central Time Zone. Early on, there was some solid racing.
  • Race 5: My Brother Cam (Chris Emigh/Brittany Vanden Berg) and Unleash the Power (Colby Hernandez/Albert Stall, Jr.) dead-heat for victory. There was an approximate $900 difference in payouts in the $2 Pick 3.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $24 million (approx.).
  • Race 11: Bellable (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 2 $200,000 San Clemente Stakes. The Italian-born jockey and New York-born trainer have made an exceptional turf pairing. D'Amato entered four in the deep field and finished 1-2-3 with a 38-to-1 shot in second place.

  • Race 5: Remarkable sums for the $.50 Pick 4 at $34,000+ and $.50 Pick 5 which paid out $383,000.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $7.4 million.
  • Race 8: Filo De Arianna (Luis Contreras/Mark Casse) won the Grade 2 $175,000 Connaught Cup. A rider switch from Kazushi Kimura who was injured yesterday and was off his mounts.
Ascot (England):
  • 2022 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes was part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Series.

In a battle of superstars, Clairiere beat Malathaat in the Grade 2 Shuvee. Both are near or at the $2 million earned mark. Both sired by Curlin, the girls hooked up as expected.
