Bob Baffert sends out seven horses worth over $3 million Friday and Saturday combined at Del Mar. Most are babies with the highest prices two first-time starters in race 5 on Saturday: $650,000 and a $500,000 2-year-old (on the AE list).

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $13 million.
  • Javier Castellano and Thomas Morley hooked up twice and both times were victorious. Castellano is adopting a lesser is more format it seems. The Hall of Famer may not get the volume of mounts but he is shining this meet. His 28% is superior to all riders so far.
  • Race 9: George Weaver was the winning trainer in the finale. That good news was secondary to a medical update from Boston. His wife Cindy was sent there a few days ago following a riding accident while she was exercising a horse in New York. Among the devastating injuries was brain damage amid broken bones, punctured lungs and among the concerns was unopened eyes. She has been progressing, rehabbing and responsive and today indicated more positive news.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Dark: Following today's races, the track will remain closed to live racing as scheduled until August 22.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Edgard Zayas rode outside of Florida for a rare time and was 2-for-2 riding for Mary Lightner, a small-stable trainer who last won a race in May 2018.

Maryland Racing:
  • Update on live racing:
    • Laurel will run until August 21.
    • Timonium (state fair) runs seven days from August 26 - September 5.
    • Pimlico -- a rare fall meet for the first time in 17 years -- from September 9 - September 25.
    • Laurel resumes racing September 30 and will be the host track until Pimlico returns for the Preakness in the spring.

  • Racing: A light day with only Saratoga, Thistledown, Belterra and Delaware going early.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $15.5 million.
  • Luis Saez won three times.
  • Phil Bauer sent out two horses and both won. Mostly a Kentucky trainer, he is 3 2-0-0 this meet.
  • Race 9: For the win:
1659658312822.png

  • Race 8: Art Collector (Luis Saez/Bill Mott) won by two lengths in the $135,000 Alydar Stakes. Art Collector was last out in February's Saudi Cup where he finished 12th. He is 18 9-1-0 lifetime including a win in this race last year and is a multiple graded stakes winner.

  • Race 3: For the win:

Churchill Downs isn't exactly the most popular entity in racing in current times. The scheduled August 13 (re: Illinois day) one-day meet has already had a setback as two of the expected four turf races have been switched to dirt. The Million (The Arlington Million) and Beverly D. remain on turf. The track installed a $10,000,000 turf surface that had some maturation issues at the Spring meet. CD is playing it safe by only conducting two turf races that day.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Over $20 million.
  • Race 9: Golden Pal (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Troy Stakes but not in the layup some expected at 2-to-5. The 4-year-old Florida-bred is 11 7-2-0 but a remarkable seven-race winning streak in the US with his lone loss in eight starts his debut race at Gulfstream..

  • Race 8: Ready to Purrform (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Hall of Fame Stakes.

  • Race 4: Gandy Dancing (Omar Moreno Hernandez/John Pregman, Jr.) qualifies as a horse for the course as he is now 4 3-1-0 at the Spa but just 16 1-0-1 elsewhere.
  • John Velazquez had back-to-back winners. He has won four of his past seven rides.
  • Javier Castellano brought home the early double; the second race was won by DQ. Castellano is fourth at the meet in wins and his 27% winning mark is tops among all jockeys with multiple victories.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 3: Beatiful Karla -- correct spelling -- (Samy Camacho/Juan Avila), a $70,000 purchase sent off the 3-to-5 favorite, buried the competition by more than five lengths and beat much pricier horses trained by arguably the top two trainers on the East coast in Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher. All three horses made debuts.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Late Start. Early End: Start time was delayed about an hour due to weather and then ended following the seventh race due to a T-storn and lightning.
  • Race 7: One of the best betting races of the day with a field of 11. A close finish emphasized the point.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Races 7 and 8: Leo Reyes and Matthew Williams combined to win both races. The 4-year trainer entered today with 16 lifetime wins.
Ellis (Kentucky):
  • Gerardo Corrales had a fine day going 5 3-1-1.
  • Race 5: Palatial Times (Gerardo Corrales/Michael Maker) gave the trainer his 3,000th lifetime win.
  • Race 4: Aunt Shirley (Gerardo Corrales/Rodolphe Brisset), a filly to Justify, debuted to a win and gave her father another win. He is turning into quite the young sire.

Del Mar (California):
  • Race 8: Spirit of Makena (Drayden Van Dyke/George Papaprodromou) debuted to a win as the longest shot in a field of 10 at 41-to-1. The winner paid $85.20. Bob Baffert ran three and the best he could finished was third.

A total of $7,409,456,622 wagered on U.S. racing through July is better than 20% from 2020 and 12% from 2019. The figure is approximately one-half a point better than last year and that is even with field size slightly smaller. In July, more than $1.1 billion was bet.

Purses are up 14% from 2022 to 2021 with over $713 million handed out to various connections.

More strong numbers for the sport.

edit - Result stands. Probably the right call, the 6 caused the bumping and the big favorite takes the worst of it

I had the song in my head when he ran the Preakness, I guess it’s coming back

Saturday, August 6, 2022
  • Brad Cox sent out 15 starters across six tracks and finished 15 5-2-2. He is the reigning Trainer of the Year in North America.
  • Steve Asmussen is 141 wins shy of 10,000. That is about seven needed wins a week if he is to reach the feat this year.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Record Handle: $40,289,681 which exceeded last year by 9.4% and more than $3 million. More than 39,000 people paid to see a spectacular day of racing that not even a passing T-storm could hinder.
  • Race 6: Dynadrive (Eric Cancel/Thomas Morley) won the $135,000 Fasig-Tipton Lure Stakes. It was the rider's only mount of the day and just his second win in 40 tries this meet.
  • Race 7: War Like Goddess (Joel Rosario/Bill Mott) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Glens Falls Stakes.
  • Race 9: Chi Town Lady (Joel Rosario/Wesley Ward) stunned the masses by winning the $500,000 Grade I Longines Test at 17-to-1.

  • Race 10: Life Is Good (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) proved once again that he may be the best horse in the country by winning the $1,000,000 Grade I Whitney Stakes. This was a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race. Life Is Good is 10 8-1-1 lifetime with over $4 million earned.

  • Race 11: Nations Pride (William Buick/Charlie Appleby), an Irish-bred with powerhouse UK connections, won the 1 3/4 mile $1,000,000 Grade I Saratoga Derby. He made his US debut last month to a second place finish. The Turf Triple series -- three races held on turf in New York -- will conclude with the Grade 3, $1 million Jockey Club Derby on September 18 at the recently installed Aqueduct fall meet. The first leg was run in July in which Classic Causeway won the Belmont Derby.

  • Top Guns: Joel Rosario, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez each won twice. They could be the three finalists for the Eclipse Award's Outstanding Jockey in 2022 when all is said and done. Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher both won twice.
  • Jose Ortiz switched agents in the past week but was nearly invisible today with an 8 0-0-2 afternoon.
  • Rudy Rodriguez is winless at 39 0-4-6 this meet. His brother Gustavo, with a smaller stable, is 18 4-1-3.
Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • Race 15: Cool Papa Bell (Todd McCarthy/Jim Campbell) won the 97th edition of the $1,000,000 Hambletonian -- the country's biggest harness race -- at the staggering odds of 52-to-1 and paid $106.00. As the track announcer called it "A Hambletonian Shocker!" or if you prefer A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words:

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jamie Ness sent out three horses. Two came back victorious. He also won at Monmouth (NJ). His 3,699 wins is 19th best in North America history.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Handle: $2.2 million.
  • Card: Seven of the nine races offered purses $75,000 or more. A rare afternoon day of racing.
  • National Riders: Paco Lopez won three times and Ricardo Santana, Jr. won twice but the biggest race of the day was won by a former Penn National rider now at Gulfstream, an ecstatic Edwin Gonzalez.
1659833789588.png

  • Race 3: Command Strike (T.D. Houghton/James Jackson) won the $75,000 West Virginia Secretary of State Stakes. The horse was foaled in Michigan, a state that doesn't have much breeding remaining and is a rarity to win a stakes race anywhere in the U.S.
  • Race 7: Fulsome (Paco Lopez/Brad Cox) won the Grade III $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Cup.

  • Race 8: Skippylongstocking (Edwin Gonzalez/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) won the Grade III $500,000 West Virginia Derby. The winner has earned over $600,000. Not bad for a $37,000 purchase.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Leonel Reyes, a somewhat overlooked jockey, won three times.
  • Race 9: Hotline to Heaven (Jesus Rios/David Brownlee) was a calling from above. The winne wired the field at 70-to-1 and paid $142.80. Topping the ticket were 70-to-1, 4-to-1 and 33-to-1 shots for a $.50 tri worth close to $3,000. The $.10 super was over $8,000.

  • Handle: $7.7 million.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $27 million.
  • Race 10:

  • Race 9: Blue Stripe (Hector Berrios/Marcelo Polanco) won the $400,000 Grade I Clement Hirsch. The winner was bred in Argentina and is 10 6-1-2 lifetime. The jockey had been riding at Gulfstream. The trainer is a small-stable conditioner who has 220 wins since the mid 90s. This was a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race.

There was much discussion and conjecture about Irad Ortiz's ride in the Whitney. I will have to re-watch another time. If Paco Lopez has the reputation for America's most aggressive rider, Irad isn't far behind with many handicappers.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $23 million.
  • William Buick, born in Norway and who spent many years riding in UK, rode two horses this weekend and won both races. He had never ridden at Saratoga prior to this weekend, Charlie Appleby trained both horses.
1660007969040.png

  • Chad Brown won four of the seven races he entered. He won consecutive MSW races with first-time starters ridden by Flavien Prat.
  • Jose Ortiz is 31 0-2-4 since his last win on July 31. He recently changed agents. His 110 starts this meet is third highest with just 13 wins.
  • Rudy Rodriguez is 42 0-5-6. The trainer has come close in recent days but the number 0-for-42 can't be overlooked.
  • Race 4: Naughty Gal (Luis Saez/Wayne Lukas) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Adirondack Stakes. The 2-year-old Florida-bred cost $350,000 at a sale earlier this year. She is 3 2-0-0. The Hall of Fame trainer, Lukas won this race for a record seventh time.

  • Race 7: With The Moonlight (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the $700,000 Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational. The Irish connections had a successful weekend at the Spa.

Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Card: The last four races held purses of $100,000. Two of the races were won by French-born jockeys who recently came to the US.
  • Race 6: All In Sync (Vincent Cheminaud/Steve Asmussen) won the $100,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint in a thriller at 22-to-1.

  • Race 9: Gray's Fable (Mickaelle Michel/Brian Lynch) won the $100,000 Evan Williams Turf Mile at 10-to-1. The $.50 Pick 4 paid $85,000+ to anyone who cashed winning the four biggest races on this card.

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Canceled: Heavy rain.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 6: Fast and Shiny (Florent Geroux/Bob Baffert) defeated stable-mate Doinitthehardway (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) in a first-second finish for the trainer who debuted two fillies in this race. The $1 exacta paid $16.70 with the higher odds-pick winning. Doesn't that seem the case more often than not?! Baffert is hitting 36% with 2-year-olds this year.

  • Race 5: Cabo Spirit (Joe Bravo/George Papaprodromou) won the Grade 3 $150,000 La Jolla Handicap. The trainer has a hot barn,

  • Race 3: Bear Mountain (Declan Cannon/Keith Desormeaux) and De la Luna (Armando Ayuso/Quinn Howey) were the two longest shots on the board at 44-to-1 and 45-t-1, respectively, to produce an immense of $871.10 for all successful $1 exactas. The $.50 tri was $2,700+. The $.10 super was over $4,000.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Canceled: Heat.

Flightline, a $1,000,000 son to Tapit who has done little wrong in his career going 4 4-0-0 and winning by more than 43 lengths, had a best of 65 workout yesterday. The Pacific Classic appears to be the next race on September 3.

International figures have yet to be released but betting exceeded $7.6 million for the Hambo at Meadowlands on Saturday. If other sources surpass $1.5 million (approx.), the total will be an all-time high for the race set in 2005.

#65 is currently in the ring and is huge! [sold for $425,000]

#70 is one that has caught my eye. Justify by a dam that has yet to produce. She is a daughter to Tapit named Shadowing. My interest is the price to gauge how much Justify has succeeded as a very young potent stud to a first-time dam.

The 2-day total in 2021 was $55.1 million.
