Saratoga (New York):
- Race 1: Blazing Sevens (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) romped by more than six lengths in a $105,000 MSW. The winner is a 2-year-old son to Good Magic who Brown trained.
- Race 5: Clairiere (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) defeated rival Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) by more than a length in a short field of four in the $200,000 Grade 2 Shuvee Stakes. Both horses have combined for about $4 million in earnings.
- Race 6: Kaling (Flavien Prat/Todd Pletcher) won the $105,000 MSW with a strong debut performance.
- Race 7: Towhead (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the race that was eventually declared "no contest." Much confusion abounded and when some semblance of order and understanding was forthcoming, it was revealed that a tractor associated with the starting gate potentially impeded horses during the race. Outriders -- assigned to alert jockeys of impending debris or potential chaos -- shouted to the point where among others Junior Alvarado and Luis Rodriguez Castro pulled. Refunds were issued for some bets while in other exotics, "all" accompanied ongoing wagers. A very unique set of circumstances. Spunk (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) was among those making a debut and Tampa-based owner Jessica Steinbrenner (Bach Stables) -- daughter to George Steinbrenner -- had arrived from Florida to New York specifically to watch the race. Alvarado said other riders should have heeded instructions and was seemingly upset they continued. Maker was upset because he felt he should get credited for purse money and how it relates to future races that necessitate such totals Handicappers of course, are handicappers but NYRA handled it as best as could with refunds when warranted and "all" for existing exotics.
- Race 10: Emboite (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the finale in a bit of redemption for the jockey and trainer. The rider was struggling with one win on 47 mounts this meet and earlier had won the race that was eventually declared a "no contest." The trainer was also affected in the "no contest."
- Race 6: Canceled due to heat.
- Canceled: Race officials determined Friday that today's card would be canceled. Laurel races next on Thursday in a make-up date.
- Race 9: Irideo (Hector Berrios/Marcelo Polanco) won the $100,000 Wicker Stakes at 31-to-1. The jockey is based at Gulfstream (FL) and had arguably one of the biggest wins of his career. The trainer won for just the second time this year. Phil D'Amato's favorite placed: apparently, he does NOT win every turf race.
- Race 8: Heywoods Beach (Ramon Vazquez/John Sadler) won the Grade 3 $125,000 Cougar II Stakes.
- Race 4: Havnameltdown (Florent Geroux/Bob Baffert) won his debut in a race filled with babies out for the first time. The Florida-bred is a $200,000 purchase who is a son to Uncaptured, a star in Canada 10 years ago. Mister Iceman (Ramon Vazquez/Peter Miller) placed. Another Baffert starter Dillinger (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) -- a $550,000 son to Into Mischief -- finished third.
Woodbine (Ontario):
- Card: Arguably the best card to date this meet.
- Handle: $10.1 million.
- Race 3: Hazelbrook (Jason Hoyte/Lorne Richards) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Hendrie Stakes.
- Race 7: Sir for Sure (Declan Carroll/Mark Casse) won the Plate Trial Stakes with an improbable payout. Casse, a Hall of Famer in both the US and Canada, had two horses entered while Todd Pletcher, one of the most successful trainers in world annals, shipped to Canada. The trifecta not only involved and was limited to them but paid nearly $200 for every $.20 (20 cents) bet. The winner went off 21-to-1.
- Race 9: Moira (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard) was sent off the prohibitive favorite and won the 67th edition of the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks by more than 10 lengths. A Chad Brown-trainee was cold on the board and finished third.
- Race 10: Wakanaka (Rafael Hernandez/Bill Mott) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Dance Smartly Stakes.
