Saratoga (New York):
  • Race 1: Blazing Sevens (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) romped by more than six lengths in a $105,000 MSW. The winner is a 2-year-old son to Good Magic who Brown trained.

  • Race 5: Clairiere (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) defeated rival Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) by more than a length in a short field of four in the $200,000 Grade 2 Shuvee Stakes. Both horses have combined for about $4 million in earnings.

  • Race 6: Kaling (Flavien Prat/Todd Pletcher) won the $105,000 MSW with a strong debut performance.
  • Race 7: Towhead (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the race that was eventually declared "no contest." Much confusion abounded and when some semblance of order and understanding was forthcoming, it was revealed that a tractor associated with the starting gate potentially impeded horses during the race. Outriders -- assigned to alert jockeys of impending debris or potential chaos -- shouted to the point where among others Junior Alvarado and Luis Rodriguez Castro pulled. Refunds were issued for some bets while in other exotics, "all" accompanied ongoing wagers. A very unique set of circumstances. Spunk (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) was among those making a debut and Tampa-based owner Jessica Steinbrenner (Bach Stables) -- daughter to George Steinbrenner -- had arrived from Florida to New York specifically to watch the race. Alvarado said other riders should have heeded instructions and was seemingly upset they continued. Maker was upset because he felt he should get credited for purse money and how it relates to future races that necessitate such totals Handicappers of course, are handicappers but NYRA handled it as best as could with refunds when warranted and "all" for existing exotics.

  • Race 10: Emboite (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the finale in a bit of redemption for the jockey and trainer. The rider was struggling with one win on 47 mounts this meet and earlier had won the race that was eventually declared a "no contest." The trainer was also affected in the "no contest."
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 6: Canceled due to heat.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled: Race officials determined Friday that today's card would be canceled. Laurel races next on Thursday in a make-up date.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 9: Irideo (Hector Berrios/Marcelo Polanco) won the $100,000 Wicker Stakes at 31-to-1. The jockey is based at Gulfstream (FL) and had arguably one of the biggest wins of his career. The trainer won for just the second time this year. Phil D'Amato's favorite placed: apparently, he does NOT win every turf race.
  • Race 8: Heywoods Beach (Ramon Vazquez/John Sadler) won the Grade 3 $125,000 Cougar II Stakes.

  • Race 4: Havnameltdown (Florent Geroux/Bob Baffert) won his debut in a race filled with babies out for the first time. The Florida-bred is a $200,000 purchase who is a son to Uncaptured, a star in Canada 10 years ago. Mister Iceman (Ramon Vazquez/Peter Miller) placed. Another Baffert starter Dillinger (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) -- a $550,000 son to Into Mischief -- finished third.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Card: Arguably the best card to date this meet.
  • Handle: $10.1 million.
  • Race 3: Hazelbrook (Jason Hoyte/Lorne Richards) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Hendrie Stakes.
  • Race 7: Sir for Sure (Declan Carroll/Mark Casse) won the Plate Trial Stakes with an improbable payout. Casse, a Hall of Famer in both the US and Canada, had two horses entered while Todd Pletcher, one of the most successful trainers in world annals, shipped to Canada. The trifecta not only involved and was limited to them but paid nearly $200 for every $.20 (20 cents) bet. The winner went off 21-to-1.

  • Race 9: Moira (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard) was sent off the prohibitive favorite and won the 67th edition of the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks by more than 10 lengths. A Chad Brown-trainee was cold on the board and finished third.
  • Race 10: Wakanaka (Rafael Hernandez/Bill Mott) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Dance Smartly Stakes.

Del Mar figures for opening weekend set a track record for the iconic facility. Nearly $70 million bet is a record-high. As the records across the US continue to be set, this weekend at Del Mar was filled with high hopes and those expectations were met. This upcoming weekend is the Bing Crosby and San Diego Handicap among other graded stakes. Another sizzler awaits. Del Mar is amongst the most beautiful tracks in the world.

Awaiting riding assignments but this is the expected field for the San Diego Handicap on Saturday. Country Grammer was assigned the high weight of 125. Entries will be drawn no later than Wednesday.

Baaeed is considered by many to be the best current racehorse in the world. While international odds differ from North America, 2-to-13 is something extraordinary in any listing.

Saratoga (NY):
  • Handle: Approximately $12 million.
  • Race 4: Kimari (Joel Rosario/Wesley Ward) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap.
Goodwood (England):
  • Race 4: Baaeed (Jim Crowley/William Haggas), lauded the world's top racehorse in a recent poll, improved to 9 9-0-0 after winning the $1.3 million Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in England. Due to the prohibitive low odds, the winner paid $2.30. According to the Guardian (UK) "Baaeed is currently a 4-7 chance to extend his unbeaten record to 10 races on the Knavesmire next month, and is expected to conclude his racing career on Champions Day at Ascot in October, in either the Champion Stakes, at 10 furlongs, or the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile."

NYRA RELOCATING Fall meet to Aqueduct from Belmont as Belmont gets upgraded
Extensive construction. The revamping of the tunnel is a primary goal. This will also lead to more chatter about Aqueduct's long-term future if Belmont gets winterized. Also, look for Breeders' Cup talk for Belmont if the state bids and the committee is looking for a host site outside of the two California and two Kentucky
tracks.

Belmont should be ready to re-open in time for its Spring/Summer meet.

As an aside, if NYRA does winterize Belmont and adds a fourth surface (synthetic in addition to the current two turf and one dirt track), then I believe this will be the first track in the world with four surfaces.

Aqueduct's 2022 Fall Schedule:

Churchill Downs, off a record-setting quarter profit, announced plans to nearly double the total racing dates of Colonial Downs (VA) from 27 to 50 if and when the final purchase by the parent company is approved pending regulatory approval (multiple states involved).

Colonial Downs was shuttered for five years but was resurrected in part due to historical racing games (somewhat similar to slots) at the track's casino facility.

Churchill currently owns T-bred tracks in Kentucky (2), Louisiana and Pennsylvania in addition to other racing including multiple harness properties.

If Churchill is true to its word -- and there is history that the group has other interests in mind besides horse racing -- then this could be a boon for the mid-Atlantic. Racing is booming throughout the US but the mid-Atlantic just got a bit more crowded and perhaps for the better.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Rain: Due to mid-card rains that weren't extensive but altered track conditions, NYRA offered "all" wins for exotics once the 9th and 10th races were removed from turf. The $1 Pick 6 (winning five legs) was as low as $2.45. Those who won all six races had this quirky pick for a whopping $90.75 when changes and track surface switches were ultimately factored:
5. 1
6. 2
7. 1-9-10-11
8. 2-4
9. ALL
10. ALL
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: Cavalry Command (Kevin Gomez/Timothy Salzman) won the opener at 3-to-1 in his maiden race. Those who wagered successfully may have noticed that the young sire West Coast -- who earned over $5 million lifetime -- had just one other win (roughly 20 starts) with his progeny.

Goodwood (England):
  • Summary: Excellent racing in England today.
  • Race 3: An immense sum of $13,800 for a successful $1 trifecta. If your numbers are 19-15-12, go collect.
  • Full highlights:

Saratoga (New York):
  • Javier Castellano rode twice and had two winners. He has won five of his past eight mounts. The Hall of Famer is 34% this meet. It is called being rejuvenated I suppose.

  • Race 7: Artorius (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $135,000 Curlin Stakes. A son to Arrogate who was a star on the track and unfortunately his abilities to sire will never be recognized due to his early passing. He has however sired with some success. Up next could be the Travers as the same for the runner up:

  • Race 9: Tyler Gaffalione was unseated at the start and was noticeably in much discomfort specifically his lower back. After the on-track ambulance attended to him, the rider maintained his mount in the 10th race. Jockeys are some of the most resilient athletes on the planet.
  • James Bond: I will forever hold my belief he is one of the most underrated trainers in North America. The upstate New Yorker sent out two horses today and won with both. Forever attached to one of my all-time favorites Behrens, Bond has been training since the 1970s
  • Top Trainers: Arguably New York's two most successful trainers the past 10 years, Chad Brown has a 1-win lead over Todd Pletcher.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Bug Riders: Maryland has a strong recent history of successful apprentices. Today was an indication of the continued tradition. A good circuit all around.
  • Walter Rodriguez, who maintains a 10-pound bug, rode three times today and won twice. He has three lifetime wins since coming to the US from El Salvador where his country has no known horse tracks. He only recently learned how to ride. The only other rider to my knowledge who hails from El Salvador is Omar Moreno who won an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice; however, he spent much of his youth in Edmonton.
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $59,000.
  • Race 2: Sweet Talia (Jeiron Barbosa/Hamilton Smith) won with what is my call for ride of the day (from races I saw). Barbosa is in his first year of riding in North America. He was bottled in the fifth spot with a quarter of a mile to go and took a heady move to the outside before flooring it. Smith has been active since the 1970s.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $33.5 million.
  • Joel Rosario won four times including the two biggest races of the day on the East coast. He teamed with Steve Asmussen to win those two races. He almost assuredly will win Jockey of the Week in North America.
  • Steve Asmussen won twice at Saratoga and four times in the US.
  • Race 8: Jackie's Warrior (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) won the $250,000 Grade I Vanderbilt Handicap with relative comfort. He became the first horse ever to win a Saratoga Grade 1 stakes in three consecutive years,

  • Race 9: Epicenter (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) won the Grade 2 $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes after light prodding with a late kick. Epicenter weas the favorite to win the 2022 Kentucky Derby but finished second. He is 9 5-3-0 with $2.2 million earned lifetime.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: A good one filled with stakes.
  • Handle: $3.7 million. A strong take for Laurel which lacks glitz and glamor but offers much to handicappers.
  • Race 2: My Candy Girl (Kevin Gomez/Brittany Russell) won at 10-to-1 and Russell had a rare bright light at this meet to go with a second place finisher in this race. The all-Brittany exacta paid $83.

  • Race 9: Ridin with Biden (Frankie Pennington/Butch Reid) gave the Philadelphia connections, including owners Cash is King (Afleet Alex) a gate-to-wire romp in the $100,000 Deputed Testimony named after the Maryland-bed who won the Preakness in 1983 and lived an incredibly long life of 32 years.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph trained five winners with seven starters. An imposing sum. He won a sixth time at Saratoga.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 2: American Blaze (Colby Hernandez/Ben Colebrook) won by 17 lengths in a remarkable debut performance. The horse was purchased for the paltry sum of $27,000 earlier this year.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 3: Comanche Country (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won as the favorite but did so in style. The Ireland-bred was coming out of a Group 2 race in Europe and when the wildly successful turf connections were added to the mix, this seemed like a lock. "Perfectly times by Umberto Rispoli...." as called by the track announcer. A confident ride.

  • Race 6: Newgate (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) was sent off at 1-to-2 and broke his maiden in a nice debut performance. The 2-year-old colt cost $850,000 and will be pointed for much bigger things.

  • Race 8: American Theorem (Joe Bravo/George Papaprodromou) won the $400,000 Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes and received an invite to the Breeders' Cup as this was a "Win and You're In" race. The Cyprus-born trainer won a Grade I for the first time.

  • Race 10: Royal Ship (Mike Smith/Richard Mandella) won the $300,000 Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at 9-to-1 and among the defeated was Country Grammer (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) who has earned over $10 million but entered following races in Dubai (March) and Saudi Arabia (February) where he finished first and second, respectively. Royal Ship improved to 18: 8-2-4.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 10: The $,.20 Pick 5 paid over $47,000.
  • Race 4: Mark Casse entered four in the $100,000 Niagara Stakes and of course the longest shot won at 14-to-1. It is weird how often good trainers have multiple horses in a race and the longer or longest shot wins.

Prank (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) just put on an absolutely remarkable performance. The first-time starter cost $500,000 and ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.8, almost a track record. That was an obliteration by what could have been 15 lengths by a 2-year-old making her debut. A daughter to Into Mischief.

The official chart shows 9 3/4 lengths win after being let up approaching the finish line.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $23,000,000+
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners. He leads the meet with 22 victories.
  • Steve Asmussen has 9,873 wins after a 2-victory day at the Spa today. The all-time winningest trainer, he is 147 wins shy of 10,000. Of the seven trainers with 4+ wins at this meet, he has the biggest percentage at 27%.
  • Race 6: Prank (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) debuted to a 9 3/4 length win in an exhilarating performance in a $105,000 MSW race. There were many shocked looks on some very seasoned faces following this beauty. A $500,000 purchase who is a daughter to Into Mischief, two-year-old fillies aren't designed to kick it like this. "This filly may have a future...MAY?!, as called on track.

  • Race 8: Rockemperor (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) closed to win the $250,000 Grade 2 Bowling Green.

  • Race 9: Gunite (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at 9-to-1 by a neck.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 3: Shahama (Jorge Vargas, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $21 million+.
  • Race 10: The $,50 Pick 5 paid over $198,000. Del Mar is having a rockin' meet. Deep fields and good cards will do that!
  • Race 9: Master Piece (Abel Cedillo/Michael McCarthy) upset the Grade2 $250,000 Eddie Rerad Stakes at 16-to-1. He entered at the 12 post and was the only "also eligible" entered. He had raced at three different California tracks without winning prior to today.

  • Race 8: Justique (Victor Espinoza/John Shirreffs), a $725,000 Justify 2-year-old filly, paid $19 in a last-to-first debut in winning an $80,000 MSW race. Do we see Prank vs. Justique some time?

  • Bob Baffert brought home both ends of the early daily double. He entered three races. He is 21 6-4-6 (30%) at the meet.

Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Brittany Russell shipped two into Virginia and both won. She is 8 4-3-1 the past three days.

Assiniboia Downs (Manitoba):
  • Handle: $3.5 million which established a track record.
  • Race 6: Red Knobs (Jorge Carreno/Robertino Diodoro) won the 74th edition of the $100,000 Manitoba Derby in which a record $374,000 was bet on the individual race. The Kentucky-bred had run nine of his 10 races at Kentucky tracks but had just one win in 10 lifetime starts. Diodoro entered three in the race and finished 1-2-3. He has won four of the past six editions of this race.

  • Race 8: More than $1.6 million was in the Pick 5 pool, an all-time record for the track.
