For the first time since 1992, Saratoga is using a chute for 1-mile on dirt and also an option for races removed from the turf. Initially, Todd Pletcher was opposed but he has entered the first carded race and said he will give it a try. In the past, some said it offered a post bias but we shall see how that unfolds. NYRA has chutes at Aqueduct and Belmont.

Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Handle: Exceeded $3 million which set a track record for an opening day.
  • Race 7: Phenomenal payouts when 51-1 and 61-1 shots topped the ticket. The win paid $105.20. The $1 exacta returned $3,460.70. The $1 tri paid over $52,000.

Harness Horse during Race 2 @ Northfield Park, OH (in conjunction with MGM ) falls into infield pond; race program cancelled; meet resumes Wednesday;

Del Mar's opening day of July 22 is already sold out. Del Mar's opener is rich in tradition and attracts the cream of southern Cal in both spirit and luxury.

Saratoga's opener is two days away.

Last year, over $815 million was wagered on the Summer Meet which established a record. Last year there was a return to normalcy in New York.

This year, the anticipation from barns especially Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown is an overflow in riches. Flavien Prat moved his tack from southern Cal to New York and may have surprised some with his abilities; he was among the top riders at the recently closed meet.

Bettors appreciate talented equines and deep fields. Saratoga offers that. If a record-handle is set, it will be another boost for the industry.

Fasig-Tipton Sales the past two days

ALL AGES:
At the Fasig-Tipton 1-day July Horses of All Ages Sale in Lexington, KY yesterday, over $10.8 million was paid for 129 horses. Last year, the comparable one-day sale totaled $7.9 million. The chart topper was 3-year-old Kuchar, a son to Uncle Mo for $500,000 and he will be shipped to New York. With Del Mar and Saratoga approaching, many buyers were looking for established runners for those meets.

BABIES: Early on, Vino Rosso and Audible babies seemed to be most in demand with pricey purchases.

Last year, $21.6 million was spent on 208 head.

And just as I type that, $410,000 was put down on an Omaha Beach filly. And so it goes...

.....A temporary new chart topper today, a Gun Runner baby out of Perfect Wife went for $430,000. Gun Runner is quite impressive on and off the track.

....And today's final figure has been tallied. More than $21.7 million was spent on 189 head. The dollar mark barely eclipsed last year's mark.

The biggest seller -- the last sale of the day-- was a Curlin colt for $600,000 out of unraced Four Sugars.

There were 11 horses sold today for $300,000 or more. Interestingly, from 11 different sires. Curlin, Gun Runner, Omaha Beach, Arrogate Uncle Mo, Ghostzapper, Munnings, Mendelssohn, Liam's Map, Violence and Into Mischief had babies sold for $300,000+.

BELMONT (NY)
The recently closed 44-day meet generated $13,437,509 per day which is an increase of 2% from 2021 and 23.1% from 2019.

On track handle was $57,531,001 total which is an increase of 16.6% compared to the 2021figure of $49,343,664.

All source handle was $591,250,409 and though it was $40 million less than 2021, last year held four more race days..

The Belmont Stakes card this year was surprisingly underwhelming and field size saw a 3.6% decline. The latter, more than almost anything, attracts handicappers.

Northern California continues its fair meet as Cal Expo (Sacramento) races for the first time since 2019. With Golden Gate taking a hiatus and Pleasanton closing its brief meet, Sacramento now has the spotlight beginning Friday and going through July 31. Later this year, fairs at Santa Rosa, Ferndale (both summer) and Fresno (fall) are on the docket.

Colonial Downs (VA) established a track record for opening day of a meet with more than $3 million bet. It has turned into a popular early-to-mid week option for shippers in the mid-Atlantic.

Turf players find it attractive, too.

Saratoga's annual 40-day meet, which extends into Labor Day weekend, opens today.

There are stalls for 1,800 horses.

The always anticipated, rarely disappointing, structurally fantastic, magnetic appeal of racing's holiness is a must-see for any enthusiast.

The atmosphere and aura is matched by only a precious few sports venues in the world.

It is here. Enjoy the riches offered by the bucolic facility and those that the majestic equine athletes and connections provide.

  • Suspended: Nik Juarez is the latest jockey to have an encounter with Paco Lopez who is generally considered one of the most aggressive riders of the past many years. Due to a race July 1 at Monmouth (NJ), La Costa (Nik Juarez) was pulled up after being cut off by Midnight Diva (Paco Lopez). The two riders had a verbal and physical bout elsewhere on the track property. Lopez was issued a 5-day suspension (July 29-30-31, August 1 and August 5). Juarez was given eight days (July 15-22 and a $500 fine). They were the top two riders at the track in 2019. Lopez has won eight Monmouth titles.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Opening Day Handle: $21.7 million which was about $150,000 less than last year. On-track handle was up 6% from 2021.
  • Opening Day Attendance: 28,466.
  • Gripe Part 1: There were maybe three or four major tracks running and post times were too close together. Saratoga's opener and Belterra conflicted. While it isn't easy on weekends and bigger days to juggle posts, somewhere someone could have blinked today.
  • Gripe Part 2: The Diana is the first Grade I race of the meet and the Spa could only attract six horses with four trained by Chad Brown? A bad betting race. This imbalance while not pronounced wasn't uncommon at Belmont. And naysayers mock southern California?!
  • Gripe Part 3: Why weren't numbers on the screen? This is Saratoga! To go a complete day without numbers during the race needs an explanation.
  • Hot: Javier Castellano rode three winners on five mounts.
  • Cold: Dylan Davis, Jose Ortiz and Tyler Gaffalione combined to go 0-for-18.
  • Cold Barns: The two area superstars Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher combined to go 0-for-7.
  • Race 9: Just Cindy (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Eddie Kenneally) won the $175,000 Grade 3 Schuylerville, the first graded stakes of the meet. The 2-year-old Justify filly is 2-for-2 lifetime.

  • Race 7: Tarabi (Javier Castellano/Cherie DeVaux) won the $135,000 Wilton Stakes. The 3-year-old filly has hit the board in all five starts. This was the first race on the chute at the Spa since 1992. The prevailing thought is the chute has a disadvantage to inside runners.

  • Race 6: Winter Son (Junior Alvarado/Marcelo Arenas) was the longest shot on the board in a field of 11 and at 43-to-1 prevailed to pay $89. The winning owner (I think) was in the winner's circle with a white sport coat. That was rather unique. Happy man following this win. A win at the Spa is a life-changing moment. Alvarado, a longtime personal favorite, had the shocker of the day but this was a difficult pick for a horse who entered off nine straight losses and only a maiden win at Mountaineer (WV).

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 1: Square Peg (Jeremy Alicea/Kenton Morris) won the opener. The 10-pound bug rider won for the third time. He is a client to Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens.
  • Race 3: Global Sensation (Angel Suarez/Michael Stidham) debuted to victory at 2-to-1. While $6.80 is a short price, the horse is owned by international powerhouse Godolphin and yet wasn't sent off the favorite. Aware handicappers rejoiced.
  • Race 4: Another Lulu (Aubrie Green/Baltazar Galvan) was the winner and ridden by a mother of three who hails from the small town of Riley, Idaho and who won her first race at Wyoming Downs (WY).
  • Race 7: Call Will (Charlie Marquez/Michael Catalano), an 11-year-old, was the victor. Horses are generally retired at the age of 13 and very few run at 11.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $24 million+ which is more than 21% better than 2021. The Spa is buzzing with early anticipation.,
  • Cold Start for New York's Best: Todd Pletcher is 8 0-2-3. Chad Brown is 5 0-0-2. Raise your hand if you had those two trainers 0-for-13 after two days. That will change sooner rather than later but that is a startling figure.
  • Brad Cox: Won two races today by a combined 15 lengths.
  • Race 6: Just Like This (Manny Franco/Brad Cox), a $250,000 purchase, broke his maiden in a decisive romp of more than 8 lengths. Cox, reigning Outstanding Trainer in North America, is a very prodigious 41% this year with more than 100 starters using Lasix for the first time. He won this race on first-time Lasix.
  • Race 7: Empress Tiger (John Velazquez/Jonathan Thomas) improved to 2 2-0-0 lifetime in winning the $150,000 Coronation Cup. The 3-year-old daughter to Classic Empire broke her maiden at Woodbine (ON). With the win, Velazquez, the Hall-of-Fame jockey prevailed in a stakes race at the Spa for a record-staggering 197th time.
1657935235724.png

  • Race 9: City Man (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Forbidden Apple Stakes.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Bomboloni (Jevian Toledo/Stevica Djuric) was a 15-to-1 morning line who won at 10-to-1 to give the Serbian-born trainer his first win in the US with his first lifetime starter. It is always intriguing to know connections of established riders for obscure trainers. The connection here is unknown to me but for Toledo to ride sent a signal and it worked. Even better, the winner caught the prohibitive even-money favorite in a good duel. Good call by track announcer Dave Rodman who is among the best at any facility in the US.

Sacramento Cal Expo (California)
  • Opening Day:The fair meet is ongoing. The northern Cal part of the California racing schedule:
    • Pleasanton/Alameda County Fair runs June 17-19, June 24-26, July 1-4, July 8-10.
    • Cal Expo/Sacramento runs July 15-17, July 22-24, July 29-31.
    • Santa Rosa/Sonoma County Fairgrounds has 8 dates August 4-7 and August 11-14.
    • Ferndale/Humboldt County Fair will run 6 dates August 19-28.
    • Golden Gate is scheduled to return August 26 into October.
    • The Big Fresno Fair in Fresno is scheduled October 7-16.
    • Golden Gate runs October 19-December 20.

RIP Kitten's Joy 2001-2022;

Kitten's Joy is just a name that resonates with turf, sires and the Ramseys. Truly a wonderful story. I remember this race at Belmont in which he ran against older males and the kick in the stretch could be heard through Tom Durkin's call. Some things stay with us forever.

Next weekend is chock-full of graded stakes and among the biggest is the Haskell at Monmouth. It has been 35 years since arguably the best Haskell ever run. Alysheba and Bet Twice is among the most overlooked great rivalries in racing history. Lost Code, a Florida-bred, finished his 27-race career with an amazing mark of 13-3-2 in his final 18 starts and many of them graded stakes. Three across the wire (grainy video).

Back when Alabama had T-bred racing and a very young Larry Collmus called when ESPN had an interest in the sport.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $37,068,005. New York handled $75 million (approx.) in three days -- a staggering sum. I mentioned a few days the electric buzz around Saratoga was even bigger than last year's re-opening. The energy is nearly unparalleled.
  • Race 11: Lookin To Fly (Tyler Gaffalione/Joe Sharp) prevailed in the finale at 10-to-1. The $1 Pick 6 paid over $299,000. Outstanding racing but for lucky bettors a day to remember forever. Favorites won just twice in 11 races with none prevailing in the Pick 6 sequence.

  • Race 10: Mo Strike (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) was flawless in winning the $175,000 Grade 3 Sanford Stakes. The 2-year-old is a son to the marvelous sire Uncle Mo and now sports a record of 2 2-0-0.

  • Race 8: In Italian (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) set a course record in winning the Grade I $500,000 Diana Stakes and at 8-to-1. In Italian marked an opening quarter mile in :22.45 and completed nine furlongs in 1:45.06 which is a Mellon Course Turf record, Brown had four of the six entered and finished 1-2-3-4. The 4-year-old daughter to Irish-bred Dubawi was purchased in 2019 in Great Britian for the U.S. equal of $609,000. She is 7 4-2-1 lifetime. The old racing adage of playing a multiple-entered trainer's largest odds proved accurate here as this was Brown's highest odds of the four. Among his defeated was Bleecker Street (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) who entered a perfect 7 7-0-0.

  • Race 5: Shutters (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) was out for the third time but at 6-to-1 was a steal. Brown is at his best when he enters off layoffs on turf racing. Shutters last raced in October.

  • Race 1: Never Change (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the nail-biter of an opener in which $1,050,000 purchase North Pole (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) finished third in a three-across-the-wire ending.
  • Irad Ortiz. Jr. won three times.
  • Joel Rosario ride three consecutive winning mounts.
  • Chad Brown entered seven races and won four times. He entered today winless. Though he did have four of the six horses in the Diana, He finished 1-2-3-4. That should be a blight for New York in an otherwise spectacular day of racing.
  • Todd Pletcher entered five races and won two times. He entered today winless.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Paco Lopez followed a 4-win day with an un-Paco-like 11 1-2-1 day and more indicative of his day was failing to hit the board with his first seven mounts. he rode the entire card of 11 races.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: $4 million. A very good card with four races $100,000 or more.
  • Weather: A storm temporarily interrupted a beauty of a day, but track conditions suffered.
  • Race 8: Chub Wagon (Silvestre Gonzalez/Guadalupe Preciado) improved to a smashing 13 12-1-0 after winning the $100,000 Alma North. The 5-year-old Pennsylvania-bred mare tried Laurel for the first time and opened up a kick that trounced the bewildered opposition. "She's just too much," per track caller Dave Rodman.

  • Race 7: English Tavern (Sheldon Russell/Hamilton Smith) was DQ'd from victory following an objection/inquiry and at 19-to-1 which would have been a major score for exotic wagerers. Eons (Jorge Ruiz/Arnaud Delacour) was promoted to victory. I am pretty sure that means Russell will be issued a suspension.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $6.8 million.
  • Race 4: She's Classy (Sonny Leon/Jose D'Angelo) was successfully ridden by this year's Kentucky Derby winning rider who moved his tack to south Florida from Ohio.

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Race 7: Brewhouse (Nik Goodwin/McLean Robertson) won the $50,000 Frances Genter Stakes by a neck. Robertson, a perennial leader in Minnesota racing, had half the field of eight. The race is named after the 1990 Kentucy Derby winning owner of Unbridled whose poor vision dictated a personal race call by winning trainer Carl Nafzger.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • HISA Complications: Texas remains the lone state to refrain from new rules implemented by HISA and with that the signal can't be exported from the state. Too bad as there was some decent racing today. Independent of that, jockeys had staged a 2-day strike due to insurance concerns. The meet ends this month.
  • Handle/Attendance: $673,742 with $578,025 of that bet ontrack by the crowd of 6,769,
  • Stewart Elliott--Steve Asmussen combined for two wins. At last check, Asmussen has 9,836 wins in his career. The 10,000-win mark should be met by the end of this year.
  • Race 9: Field Pass (Javier Castellano/Michael Maker) was elevated to victory in the $300,000 Texas Turf Classic as Megacity (Joe Rocco/Michael Maker) was placed second. The same trainer involved in the DQ, an oddity indeed.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: Exceeded $6 million.

Alabama Derby? Don’t think I ever even heard of that one
Yup. Didn't last too long, maybe 10 years but that is a guess. The people who currently own Finger Lakes and the Bruins (NHL) once had ownership. It was a greyhound track, too, after a conversion until maybe three years ago.

Sunday, July 17, 2022
  • Steve Asmussen sent out 17 horses across four tracks but only one returned a winner. At last check, he has 9.837 wins lifetime -- 163 shy of 10,000.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $22.8 million. The four-day opening week total exceeded $106 million. The 2021 meet saw NYRA setting an all-time wagering record of $815,508,063 and drawing 1,046,478 in attendance. We are going to see special things this meet.

  • Jose Ortiz rode four winners. Yesterday he rode the card of 11 races and failed to win.
  • Joel Rosario rode three winners for the second straight day in which he has won six of eleven in total. He leads the meet with seven victories.
  • David Donk sent out two horses and both returned victorious under the skilled hands of Jose Ortiz. The trainer is from western New York state and has been conditioning for more than 30 years following the supervision of Hall of Famer Woody Stephens.
  • Christophe Clement was 3 2-1-0 today and is a fantastic 11 4-1-4 (365/82%) this meet. He is undeniably one of the best turf trainers on the East coast.
  • Race 8: Big Invasion (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Quick Call Stakes. Big Invasion won for the fifth straight time.

  • Race 7: Lady Thornhill (Jose Ortiz/David Donk) won at 16-to-1 by a head over the 2-to-1 favorite.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 9: That's Right (Andy Hernandez/Michael Moore) won the $100,000 My Frenchman Stakes in comfortable fashion. The 3-year-old son to Goldencents has basically wired the field in his last three races. He was a maiden prior to the streak. The Parx-based Moore has been training about 10 years and is having arguably the best year of his career.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Bret Calhoun trained three winners including both $150,000 races for Texas Futurity.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 3: Poulin in O T (Luis Contreras/Steve Owens) won the $125,000 Victoria Stakes. The 2-year-old Ontario-bred is a perfect 2-for-2.
