Bob Baffert was hit with a one-year suspension from all NYRA race tracks despite the fact that he has no violations in the state.

Churchill Downs previously suspended Baffert from its properties for two years and that was a result stemming from Medina Spirit and the 2021 Kentucky Derby in which Baffert used an anti-rash ointment that unknowingly included a substance (betamethasone) not permitted on race day.

Baffert's 90-day suspension issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, which is considered reciprocal among all jurisdictions, ends July 2.

As it currently stands, beginning July 3, Baffert is allowed to enter horses at any track unless it is a NYRA property (Saratoga, Aqueduct and Belmont) or owned by CDI (Churchill Downs, Fair Grounds, Presque Isle, etc.).

New York's main contention is that Baffert's presence hurts the sport's image and as an extension such things as the NYRA betting app.

Based on other suspensions and time served, Baffert could enter a NYRA track as early as January 25, 2023 but he rarely uses Aqueduct at that time of year. The suspension is moreso for the Saratoga.meet and even that is limited.

  • 6,000 Wins: DeShawn Parker became the 21st jockey in North American racing history to reach the milestone when he won at Horseshoe Indiana (the former Indiana Grand) earlier this week.
  • 200 To Go: Steve Asmussen has 9,800 wins. He is the all-time winningest trainer in North America annals. He has 15 listed today.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $10 million.
  • Race 1: Chasing Daylight (Jose Ortiz/Jorge Abreu) was solid in winning as the only first-time starter -- once again, a favorite and suggested betting angle -- at 9-to-1. A $75,000 MSW to open the card and an impressive winner. Keep an eye on the New York-bred 3-year-old daughter to Mr. Z especially in state-bred races.

  • Race 3: Fort Ticonderoga (Jose Ortiz/Shug McGaughey) caught the 3-to-5 favorite Growth Connection (Irad Ortiz. Jr./Chad Brown/Klaravich Stables).

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 7: Horses 1 through 8 were scratched due to the race being taken off-the-turf. That meant the main track only 9 and 10 entered and we had a rare match race. Both horses crossed the 1.5 mile race under a hand ride. A 1.5 mile race is rare in itself but a match race? That has to be many years since its last occurrence in the US.
Laurel Park (Maryland):
  • Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon had his first 4-win day as he entered four races and won each. He is a former assistant to Scott Lake who is the sixth winningest trainer in North America history.
  • Damon Dilodovico has a hot barn. He is 46% so far this meet and his six wins is tied for second most. He sent out three horses and two returned winners.
  • Brittany Russell is having a tough go this meet. She entered two starters: one was non-placed and the other -- at 2-to-5 -- scratched at the gate. She is 14 1-3-1 this meet.
  • Race 4: One of the best finishes of the day, three across the wire.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgar Perez rode five winners. He moved his tack to south Florida following the closing of Arlington Park (IL). At one point, Perez registered a natural hat trick.

Flavien Prat picked up the mount on Life is Good for the suspended Irad Ortiz, Jr. when the colt runs July 2 at Belmont.

Prat already rides Flightline which means he is riding what is arguably the top two horses in the US right now. Flightline likely will run next in either Saratoga in August or Del Mar in September and then perhaps the Breeders' Cup.

Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races:

Japan
Sunday's Grade 1 Takarazuka Kinen June 26 at Hanshin Racecourse puts paid to top-level Japanese racing for the season with a fittingly classy field set to tackle the 2,200 meters.
Among the contenders are three who make their first start since doing their part in Japanese dominance of the rich, early-season races in Saudi Arabia and Dubai.
Titleholder, Efforia and Deep Bond all should be well-backed in the Takarazuka Kinen, which awards the winner an automatic entry to the Group 1 Cox Plate in Australia and the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland.
Titleholder and Deep Bond finished first and second in the Grade 1 Tenno Sho (Spring) in their last start. Efforia was virually unbeatable in 2021 but tossed in a clunker in his 2022 debut in April and hasn't raced since.
South America
Peru and Brazil each host a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race Sunday.
The Group 1 Grande Premio Brasil at Hipodromo da Gavea in Rio de Janeiro offers a guaranteed spot in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf. The Group 1 Gran Premio Pamplona at Hipodromo Monterrico in Peru provides the winner an Annie Oakley for the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Saturday. June 25, 2022
  • Brad Cox, defending Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Trainer in North America, had three winners and finished 5 3-0-2.
  • Steve Asmussen is stuck on 9,800 career wins for another day. He finished a ghastly 14 0-4-1 today. He remains 200 wins away from becoming the first North America based trainer to reach 10,000 victories.
Belmont (New York):
  • Race 8: Gerrymander (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes at 6-to-1. While it was only a field of four, Brown's lone entry was nearly the longest odds. The 3-year-old daughter to Into Mischief won a graded stakes for the first time in three tries.

  • Race 4: The two longest shots on the board -- 30-1 and 16-1 -- combined to pay $333.50 for a $1 exacta. Randi Persaud, winning trainer, began the meet 0-for-29 before celebrating this victory.
  • Chad Brown entered six horses in three races and won twice.
  • John Velazquez had just one ride and that was in the finale. The Hall of Fame rider can still produce but he seems to be getting less and less mounts.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: Roughly $5 million.
  • Angel Rodriguez and Paco Lopez each had three winners.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Penny Pearce sent out two horses and both won as favorites. She is 24% this year which is a career best in 11 years of training. Separately, she is suspended July 1-16 for a medications violation at Monmouth (NJ) used in a race in May and that punishment is reciprocal.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 5: Was that the longest delay to a race's start in track history? Seemed that way. One horse was scratched and that led to the lengthy delay.
  • Victor Carrasco rode three winners including two for Michael Trombetta.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Card: Ohio's biggest race day.
  • Handle: Roughly $4.8 million.
  • Race 11: Tawny Port (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Brad Cox) won the 88th edition of the $500,000 Grade 3 Ohio Derby. Tawny Port entered off a seventh place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He battled gamely in withstanding a challenge to White Abarrio (Tyler Gaffalione/Saffie Joseph, Jr.). A good field or as one pundit stated "Better than the Belmont Stakes."

  • Race 10: Army Wife (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the $250,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes in a close battle with Crazy Beautiful (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek).

  • Race 8: Though the winner was sent off at 4-5, the $1 tri produced a return of $348.20.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. was on five horses and won three times in a rare Ohio appearance.
Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Card: Seven of the 10 races had purses $100,000+.
  • Race 1: Je Suis Rapide (Geovanni Franco/Michael Puhich) was the lone first-time starter and won at 8-to-1. That preferred betting option existed with failure at Laurel, however.
  • Race 2: Summer Promise (David Cohen/Wayne Lukas), a $500,000 purchase, romped by 5 lengths in a maiden performance. Cohen, who began the meet with 34 straight losses, ended the day 2-for-38 at the meet.
  • Race 8: Lady Rocket (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Brad Cox) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Chicago Stakes.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $7.4 million.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Opening Day: Closing day is July 10. Del Mar operates July 22 - September 11.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $5 million+.
  • Josie Carroll trained three winners.

Kentucky Racing for the remainder of 2022:
  • Churchill Downs closes shop July 4.
  • Ellis Park 7/8/2022-8/28/2022
  • Churchill Downs August 13 (special one-day of racing)
  • Kentucky Downs 9/1/2022-9/14/2022
  • Churchill Downs 9/15/2022-10/2/2022
  • Keeneland 10/7/2022-10/29/2022
  • Churchill Downs 10/30/2022-11/27/2022
  • Keeneland 11/4/2022-11/5/2022 BREEDERS' CUP
  • Turfway 12/1/2022-12/31/2022

1656384157799.png

Churchill Downs is continuing suspending all turf racing for the rest of the meet with three exceptions on July 2 and one on July 3. Those four races are stakes. The meet ends July 4. Churchill invested $10 million into turf upgrades but the surface hasn't matured as quickly as hoped. Churchill races later this year (dates above).

Friday's card has been released and among the runners will be Personal Pursuit, a 2-year-old daughter to Tapit who was purchased for $500,000 and is scheduled to make her debut in Race 7, a $120,000 MSW.
Tyler Gaffalione rides. Mark Casse trains.

Mandaloun, who was elevated to victory in the 2021 Kentucky Derby, will race Saturday in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster. The sizzling Olympiad will be among the contenders.

Shedaresthedevil will in the Fleur de Lis on Saturday,

  • Steve Asmussen entered 18 horses at four tracks and won four times. He is 196 wins shy of 10,000. He had two winners at Lone Star (TX) and Churchill Downs (KY).
Belmont (New York):
  • Race 9: Vindatude (Manny Franco/George Weaver) was the lone first-time starter and prevailed in a deep finale of 12 at 30-to-1. Once again, a suggested wagering angle. The return was $63.50 for every deuce wagered. Weaver owns, trains and bred the horse -- a rarity for any singular interest.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell's struggles continued with an 0-fer day with three winnable races. She is now 17 1-4-3. The slump is unexpectedly prolonged.
  • Sheldon Russell, Brittany's husband, is nearing a return from injuries. He last rode in September and then suffered another injury in morning workouts. His first injury required foot surgery and that preceded a broken collarbone.
  • Race 6: Rationalmillenial (Walter Rodriguez/Jose Corrales) gave the jockey his first lifetime win in his third attempt. He is from El Salvador and apparently had no riding in his background. I don't know of any other rider from El Salvador, and apparently horse racing is not run there judging from post-race remarks by the trainer.

  • Race 3: Reawakened (Alberto Delgado/William Meister) was the longest shot at 30-to-1 and prevailed in a nip-and-tuck battle in which he was well, reawakened following a lead, trailed and then the win.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 5: The $.10 superfecta returned over $6,100. A staggering payout.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $36,000.

Tampa Bay returns for its annual 2-day Summer Festival June 30 and July 1 for fiscal year purposes. Tampa Bay is dark from early May until around Thanksgiving except these two days annually. Post times for both dates is late morning. (11:55 am approx.).

The first date upcoming technically ends the meet which ran November 2021 until May 2022.

July 1 starts the meet which continues in November and into May 2023.

Tampa has the East's best turf course in the winter but that is rivaled by such places as Churchill (though not to this year) and others such as Laurel. Non-followers of Maryland racing are often surprised by Laurel's carpet.

Gulfstream is having a mandatory Pick 6 payout on Thursday, also due to the fiscal year. A million jackpot is possible.

Life Is Good, arguably the best horse in the US currently, will race this weekend in New York.

Flightline, his potential chief rival, is staying in California and likely will run next at Del Mar later this year.

The two could hook up in the Breeders' Cup in November and potentially settle Horse of the Year.

About those four stake turf races at Churchill: now canceled. The newly installed grass course is still maturing and as such track officials opted to remove turf racing from the remaining cards. The Wise Dan has been canceled.

After July 4, Churchill is dark until August 13 when an Arlington Million Day is resurrected in a bastardized form.

Wednesday, June 29, 2022

Belterra Park (Ohio):
  • Race 8: Chloes Angel (Vernon Bush/Phyllis Shetron) gave the jockey his third win of the meet in his return to riding. Prior to this year, he last won in 2017 and was sidelined by injury and likely weight issues since 2018. He won for the first time in 1978 at this same track when it was known as River Downs in Cincinnati. Much of his success came at shuttered tracks in New England especially Suffolk Downs (MA). Bush is 60 years of age,

Horseshoe Indiana (Indiana):
  • Race 1: Barbarian (Samuel Bermudez/Steve Asmussen) gave the trainer win number 9,806. He is 194 shy of 10,000. Can he get there in 2022? It will be close.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione recorded a natual hat trick as part of a 4-win day. His 55 wins is far superior to all other riders this meet which closes Monday. Gaffalione has increased his recently tabbed moniker as the new Mr. Kentucky for his prowess within the commonwealth.
  • Race 7: Travel Column (Tyler Gaffalione/Bill Mott) made her 4-year-old debut quite successful. The multiple graded stakes winner has won four of her eight races and has now been victorious in all three of her racing years. She was a hefty $850,000 purchase by former Boston Scientific CFO Larry Best (OXO Equine).

Belmont (New York):
  • Twilight Thursday: 3:05 pm post time to honor TV commitments with Fox Sports.
  • Dylan Davis upped his meet to lead to four victories following a win today. The meet ends July 10.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 4: Delaware almost topped last week's 1.5 mile match race for an oddity with this no contest. Due to a spill, race riders were instructed to pull with either the wayward horse or perhaps a prone rider on track.
  • Race 7 and 8: Yan Aviles, a 7-pound bug, won the last two races on the card with back-to-back bombers that resulted in a $1 double that paid an exorbitant $316.50.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Closing Day: The meet, which began in November 2021 and continued into Kentucky Derby day, officially ended today with the first of two consecutive race days for the fiscal year known as Summer Festival. Tomorrow, July 1, officially begins the meet which is dark until November of this year and carries into May 2023.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas went back-to-back with Saffie Joseph, Jr. trained horses. The first win was the rider's first victory since December. He then had shoulder surgery followed by rehab.

Friday. July 1, 2022
  • Steve Asmussen sends out 18 horses tomorrow (Saturday). At last check, he is 192 wins away from becoming the first trainer in No. America history to record 10,000 wins. He had one win today.
Belmont Park (New York):
  • Handle: $10 million.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $34,000.
  • Race 8: Dynadrive (Eric Cancel/Thomas Morley) was given perhaps the ride of the day and won as the longest shot on the board at 45-to-1. The horse was coming out of a ninth place finish at Sam Houston (TX) under the direction of Robertino Diodoro. I haven't the foggiest recollection of the last horse to win at a NYRA track entering from Sam Houston.

  • Race 6: Empire Hope (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won at 4-to-1 in a debut race and perhaps benefitted from an odd racing moment by Joel Rosario who otherwise looked home on board another first-time starter. Hoodooland (Dylan Davis/Shug McGaughey) was a $1.4 million purchase who broke awkwardly and finished third.

  • Race 5: Oxymore (Jose Ortiz/Adam Rice) wired the field at 11-to-1 and won by more than 8 lengths. Ortiz rode the opposing #3 last time out and seemingly had his choice among both horses considering his position among the elites. However, the trainer is the brother to Ortiz's wife Taylor and.... an instance where the handicapper could throw away the form. The trainer was previously winless in 2022. He also owned the horse.
Monmouth Park (New Jersey):
  • Claudio Gonzalez, the most successful Maryland trainer in recent years, sent out four horses and three returned victorious. He leads this meet by three over his closest challenger.
Laurel Park (Maryland):
  • Race 4: Heldish (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) debuted to a gate-to-wire 2+ length win. It was the rider's first mount since the first of multiple injuries (broken foot then a broken collarbone) sustained since he last rode 296 days ago. “Time-wise, it's the longest I've been off and I would say probably the toughest. Not being able to walk for four months was very hard. We did three months of rehab and ended up taking the screws and plates out of the foot. There were times when I didn't think it was going to get better, but as we all know if you give it enough time everything heals. Just fortunate enough to be back in the saddle today.” The husband-and-wife team smooched in the winner's circle. Hopefully the rider can stay healthy. The trainer, cold this meet, has shared or won the last two Maryland titles. They make for a great human interest racing story.

1656719343343.png
  • Feargal Lynch/Graham Motion teamed twice and both horses returned winners. The jockey and trainer were both born in the UK.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Opening Day: The meet continues some time in November and will run until May 2023. Tampa Bay ran its annual two-day Summer Festival yesterday (which closed the past meet) and today as part of fiscal policy.
  • Graphics: The graphics appeared to get a fresh look with today's racing.
  • Race 7: Luis Two Guns (Gary Wales/Mario Lorito) wired the field and won by four lengths to gave the rider his second win this year in 72 starts. He was once a regular and dependable rider at Suffolk Downs (MA).
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Race 7: Laker Mamba (Emisael Jaramillo/Daniel Hurtak) gave the trainer his third consecutive win spanning two days. He has been training for over 40 years and won for the first time in 1982.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione has long ago clinched this meet's riders' title and today he added two wins.
  • Leading Trainer: A battle of the big boys as Brad Cox (22 wins) and Steve Asmussen (21 wins) may battle toward the concluding card on Monday.
  • Race 10: Backsideofthemoon (Tyler Gaffalione/Robertino Diodoro) won at 8-to-1. He was out for the 61st time and his last prior win came in December 2020. As pointed out by the almost always awesome David Grening:

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 6: Frosted Over (Kazushi Kimura/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes.

As if tomorrow isn't going to be a luxurious day of entertainment and opportunity, a $2 million horse owned by a conglomerate will be debuting on turf in race 5 at Belmont. Capensis, a 3-year-old colt to Tapit, now pushing 22 years of age and one of the greatest sires in history, will be trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Jose Ortiz.

Holy all. Keep an eye on that $2 million horse. What a race. A spectacular and devastating kick in the stretch.

What the blazes what that at Delaware in the $100,000 race. Jeremy Rose rode the winner at 17-1 and then was involved in a multiple horse objection in which he was left alone (thankfully). The inquiry was interminable. Other results changed but not the winner. Half hour objection? Jeremy Rose!

Saturday, July 2, 2022
  • Summary: An exhilarating and exhaustive if not festive day at the races. One of the most entertaining days in quite some time.
  • Steve Asmussen had a 4-win day among 18 sent. At last check, he is 188 wins away from becoming the first trainer in No. America history to record 10,000 wins.
  • Chad Brown had a rare dreadful afternoon going 11 1-2-0 with six runners finishing sixth or worse. His lone win was at Monmouth where he finished second in the same race. At Delaware, he was DQ'd from third place to seventh in a stakes.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., suspended five days from June 29 - July 3 due to a ride at Royal Ascot (England), has mounts Monday at Belmont.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $15 million+. This was one of New York's best cards of the year.

What went on in New York today? Unofficially these two figures are among the top four issued in 2022.

  • Todd Pletcher was outrageously successful today going 7 4-0-0. Winning four times for a trainer in New York on any given Saturday is immense.
  • John Velazquez has won five times on 13 mounts the past three days. He has recharged his battery.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 6 returned over $50,000 to all winners.
  • Race 8: Charge It (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes in perhaps the biggest whoopin' of the year, a 23-length demolition that will be remembered for eternity. Charge It finished 17th in this year's Kentucky Derby.

  • Race 5: Capensis (Jose Ortiz/Todd Pletcher) wowed the masses at 5-to-1 in his debut performance. He was purchased for $2,000,000.

  • Race 4: Life Is Good (Flavien Prat/Todd Pletcher) won the $250,000 Grade 2 John Nerud Stakes by five lengths. He is 9 7-1-0 lifetime with over $3.5 million earned. The son to Into Mischief came off his worst performance, a 4th place finish at Meydan (Dubai, UAE) in March. As stated above, this may be the best horse in North America right now.

The walk of a champ:

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: $4.5 million.
  • Race 5: Edie Meeny Miny Mo (Paco Lopez/Michelle Hemingway) won the $100,000 Regret Stakes by a head. The trainer. from Virgina who worked for many years in the South African circuit, won a stakes for the first time.

  • Isaac Castillo was electric today winning six times -- one short of the track record -- on 11 mounts. At one point, he had four winners in four straight races. He teamed to go a perfect 3 3-0-0 with Jerry Hollendorfer who has the third most wins among all trainers in No. America history.
1656811883337.png
  • Chad Brown has sent out 20 horses this meet with just two winning.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Handle: $3 million.
  • Eric Cancel, a regular rider at NYRA, rode two horses and both won.

  • Race 4: Whereshetoldmetogo (Jevian Toledo/Brittney Russell) won the $100,000 Alapocas Run. The 7-year-old won for the 15th time in 35 starts and is approaching $1 million in earnings. He is a gaudy 8 6-2-0 lifetime at Delaware.

  • Race 5: Sparkle Blue (Jeremy Rose/Graham Motion) was sent off 15-to-1 and won the $100,000 Christiana Stakes but not before what seemed like the longest review to an objection in the history of the world. At first, it appeared the top two finishers were involved but then a third horse was added to the review. So much intrigue and confusion. When all was said and done, the third place horse was put seventh. Much riding on the line especially with a bomber on top. Rose is 26% this year, returning to ride following retirement in 2019. Motion had three and this was by far his longest odds.
  • Race 6: Midnight Stroll (Eric Cancel/John Terranova) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Delaware Oaks by a head.
  • Race 7: Main Event (Eric Cancel/George Weaver) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Kent Stakes.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell is 10 3-2-3 since June 26 at Laurel and Delaware combined. A good week.
  • Race 8: Hybrid Eclipse (Jevian Toledo/Brittney Russell) won the $100,000 Caeser's Wish Stakes.
  • Race 9: Old Homestead (Charlie Marquez/Brett Brinkman) won the $100,000. The trainer doesn't ship to Maryland too often, rather he is Louisiana-based to my recall.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $7 million.
  • Race 10: Ce Ce (Victor Espinoza/Michael McCarthy), a 6-year-old daughter to Elusive Quality, won the Grade 2 Princess Rooney Invitational as expected but in a romp and will head to the Breeders' Cup. She won for the 10th time in 20 starts including this race the past two years. She has earned over $2.2 million.

  • Race 7: Willy Boi (Chantal Sutherland/Jorge Delgado) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Smile Sprint Invitational as the 4-to-5 favorite.
Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Card: So you want a card? All 12 races held purses of $120,000 or more.
  • Race 1: Zaici (David Cohen/Robertino Diodoro) opened the card by wiring the field at 32-to-1. That set the wheels in motion.
  • Race 3: Damon's Mound (Gabriel Saez/Michelle Lovell) wired the field and won by 12 lengths at 4-to-1.
  • Race 6: Wicked Halo (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $200,000 Tepin Stakes.
  • Race 7: Rattle N Roll (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Kenny McPeek), who was on this year's Kentucky Derby trail, won the $200,000 America Derby.
  • Race 8: Shedaresthedevil (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won $350,000 Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Stakes.

  • Race 9: Aloha West (Joel Rosario/Wayne Catalano) won the $150,000 Kelly's Landing Overnight Stakes.

  • Race 10: Olympiad (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $750,000 Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes and received an invite to the Breeders' Cup. The horse is 5-for-5 in 2022. Good job by Alvarado, a personal favorite for years, who had one of his biggest victories in a solid career. He was sent off the favorite and defeated among others Mandaloun (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) who won the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: Souper Hotty Totty (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Selene Stakes. The trainer won this race for an incredible fifth straight year.
  • Race 8: Lady Speightspeare (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Roger Attfield) and Crystal Cliffs (Rafael Hernandez/Graham Motion) dead-heated to win the $175,000 Grade 2 Nassau Stakes. The Lady nearly wired the field before being caught for the tie but still gave Attfield, the Englishman who is 82 years of age and who is in both the US and Canadian Halls of Fame, his 2,000th lifetime win.

  • Race 9: Rondure (Rafael Hernandez/Katerina Vassilieva) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Marine Stakes. Next up could be the August 21 Queen's Plate.

  • Race 10: Bound for Nowhere (Pablo Morales/Wesley Ward) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Highlander Stakes.

The contentious battle between the state of Texas and HISA was elevated yesterday with Lone Star (and presumably eventually Retama and Sam Houston) with the discontinuation of exporting its simulcast feed. Handle was severely reduced as was expected. The state is alone among the major parimutuels to avoid the mandatory participation of federal oversight into what was state legislation of medication (among other language) procedures, something that went into affect July 1. There has been some discontent but only Texas went to this level by refusing to send its signals out of the state. Hopefully this can be rectified as handicappers are among those involved. Texas has sound reasons for not obliging but Lone Star is an attractive smaller track, too. Lone Star ends its meet later this month. Only time will tell.

Todd Pletcher won the Belmont opener with a $275,000 Violence colt making a debut. Violence babies are among my favorites. He looked strong and passed the test.
