Churchill Downs races under the lights Saturday and the card is appealing. One horse that caught my eye is Just An Angel on Friday who is a 2-year-old daughter to Triple Crown winner Justify who, if my research is up-to-date, is 4 2-1-0 as a young sire. Steve Asmussen trains. Florent Geroux has the mount. Homebred in Lexington.

Update:. Finished second.

Ascot Racecourse [Royal Ascot] (Ascot, England):
  • Card: Day 3 of 5 for the annual meet is in the books.
  • Race 1: The Ridler (Paul Hanagan/Richard Fahey) shocked the masses with a controversial $90.70 win in the Norfolk Stakes. He was sent off 50-to-1 in local betting.

  • Race 2: Secret State (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) paid $12.40 in victory in the King George V Handicap.

  • Race 3: Magic Lagoon (Shane Foley/Mrs. J. Harrington) paid $7.80 in victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes. An entertaining finish. Irish-breds finished 1-2-3,

  • Race 4: Kyprios (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) was sent off the favorite and won the $675,000 Gold Cup Stakes, the biggest race at Royal Ascot. Kyprios was victorious for the fifth time in seven starts. The legendary trainer won this race for an 8th time which extends his record. Mojo Star closed strong for second. Came up short but was game. The star attraction Stradivarius finished third. He was going for his fourth Gold Cup. Irish-breds finished 1-2-3-4. The race was 20 furlongs or 2.5 miles.

  • Race 5: Thesis (Ryan Moore/Harry and Roger Charlton) paid $37.30 in winning with the number 26 in a field of 24 in the Britannia Stakes.

  • Race 6: Claymore (Adam Kirby/Jane Chapple-Hyam), a French-bred, paid $14.80 in victory in the Hampton Court Stakes.

  • Race 7: Inver Park (Ben Curtis/George Boughney) paid $36.20 in winning the Buckingham Palace Stakes. The $1 exacta paid $1,001.70. $1 exactas that pay over a g-note are extra sexy. The $2 trifecta paid a smashing $52,000+.

June 16, 2022 (part 2)

Belmont (New York):
  • Dylan Davis added two wins to his meet lead which now stands at four over closest challenger Irad Ortiz. Jr.
  • Race 4: In My Wake (Trevor McCarthy/Christophe Clement) was the lone first time starter in a deep field -- a favorite betting angle -- and paid $17.00 in victory.
  • Race 7: Perceived (Joel Rosario/Rudy Rodriguez) paid $41.40.
  • Race 8: Spirit And Glory (Dylan Davis/Robert Falcone) completed a $1 double that returned $462.50. Just to summarize this extraordinary double which is among the highest this year in New York: the defending North America champion rider for Outstanding Jockey of the Year in Rosario and the leading rider at the meet in Davis. Some things are easier following the races.
  • Race 9: Me 'n Sap (Luis Cardenas/David Donk) was sent off 31-to-1 from a 15-to-1 morning line and helped obliterate the tote board. The $.50 Pick 5 paid $342,000+. The $1 Pick 3 paid a gigantic $16,000,

Belterra (Ohio):
  • Canceled: Precautionary measures due to heat.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Canceled: Precautionary measures due to heat. This was the 23rd time in track history that a race day was canceled in nearly 150 years.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 9: Shinsun (Luis Saez/Barclay Tagg) was the lone first-time starter -- oft-mentioned as a favorite betting angle -- and won at 5-to-1.
  • Race 6: Big Q (Javier Castellano/Gary Sciacca) used every bit of energy and received a splendid ride by the Hall of Famer to win at 7-to-1.
  • Race 5: More Mango (Gary Richards/James Ferraro) won at 25-to-1. The 58-year-old jockey from Jamaica ended an 86-race losing skid as he last won on November 2, 2019. He had one win in 119 mounts starting with 2017.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jeremy Rose and Mike Gorham teamed to go a perfect 2 2-0-0. Rose has been mentioned a few times in this thread and now sports a 19 7-2-0 (37%) in his return to racing. Gorham trains mostly in the mid-Atlantic after a lengthy career in New England.
  • Jorge Ruiz failed today in his lone start but still owns an 8 5-2-0 (63%) mark.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jeiron Barbosa-Claudio Gonzalez went a perfect 3 3-0-0. Gonzalez is afire this meet going 19 8-2-2. He has won many Maryland titles through the years.
  • Race 9: Mostly chalk today and the $.20 Pick 6 revealed that by paying $38.88.
  • Race 7: Frightland (Feargal Lynch/Brittany Russell) was brilliant in breaking his maiden in his fourth try. Russell also won at the meet for the first time. She had won or shared the past two Maryland meet titles. This is a whoopin'!

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Just Cindy (Rafael Bejarano/Eddie Kenneally) gave her sire Justify another victory. Babies of the young dad are 6 3-0-1. Bejarano became the 15th jockey in history to win 500 times at CD.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Closing Weekend: Three race dates before the track goes dark until Sept. 28. Until then, So. Cal meets are at Los Alamitos, Del Mar and Los Al again.

oh my god what has just ahppened.

1-2-3 the long shots at 50-1, 80-1 and 34-1, I've never seen this happen. Much less in a race of this supposed level

1-24-5-14 in the Wokingham. Ryan Moore on the winner, the horse with back to back wins in this race

Saturday, June 18, 2022

Ascot Racecourse [Royal Ascot] (Ascot, England):
  • Leading Jockey: Ryan Moore won a Royal Ascot meet for the ninth time. He won seven races. William Buick won five times.
  • Leading Trainer: Aidan O'Brien had five winners and won a Royal Ascot title for the 11th time.
  • Top owner: Godolphin received the Leading Owner Award for a second successive year following an exceptional meeting that saw five winners in their traditional silks.
  • Race 1: Holloway Boy (Daniel Tudhope/Karl Burke) won the Chesham Stakes and paid an enormous $83.90. From the winning trainer "I entered the horse and thought 'I'm not going to run him' but I thought sod it, we'll run him, give him a nice day out.'" With a 70-to-1 shot coming in second place, the $2 exacta returned a massive $4.192.80. The $1 trifecta was an incredible $28,000+.

  • Race 2: Noble Truth (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the Jersey Stakes and paid $7.40.

  • Race 3: Broome (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) paid $13.40 in winning the Hardwicke Stakes. It was the trainer's 900th lifetime Group or GBraded winner.

Stablemate Creative force finished second, losing by a neck. The pair is owned by Godolphin, among the most noted horse racing owners in the world. The $2 exacta paid $913.80. With a dead heat for third, the two $2 trifectas returned over $8,300 for one and $9.800 for the other.

  • Race 5: Rohaan (Ryan Moore/David Egan) paid $50.10 in winning the Wokingham Stakes.

1655640520197.png

  • CALDER: Churchill Downs damaged horse racing at its north Miami facility. It was recently revealed that 115.7 acres of the track has been sold to a developer for $291 million. Gulfstream leased the track for an autumn meet through 2020 for six years but the writing was on the wall after Churchill opted to make part of the facility into a jai alai fronton in addition to keeping its casino license. By law, a parimutuel offering had to be part of the agreement to keep a casino license. The casino and fronton remain in existence as part of the 54 acres Churchill maintains.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $13 million.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 returned $60,000.
  • Race 9: Dream Central (Jose Lezcano/Gary Sciacca) earned the shocker of the day as the longest shot on the board at 39-to-1 to win the $150,000 New York Stallion Series. This is amongst the biggest wins for the Brooklyn-born trainer who has over 1,000 victories including graded stakes; however, the surprise and excitement radiated through the broadcast.

Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Card: 11 races, four of were maiden special weight at $120,000.
  • Race 10: Happy Jack (Rafael Bejarano/Doug O'Neill) won the $127,000 allowance optional claiming race, the co-largest purse of the day. Happy Jack raced in the first two legs of the Triple Crown this year which included a 14th place spot in the Kentucky Derby.
  • Race 9: Sunny River (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox), sent off the favorite and with powerful connections, was DQ'd to second for Take a Stand (Gerardo Corrales/Victoria Oliver).
  • Wednesday: First post has been adjusted to 10:30 am ET.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Closing Day: Today was the 76-day meet's finale. The meet began December 26.
  • Total Handle: $778,500,000 which is 2% better than 2021.
  • Leading Jockey: Juan Hernandez with 104 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Phil D'Amato who set a Santa Anita Winter/Spring meet record with 63 wins and of those 57 came on turf. Doug O'Neill, who finished second this year with 40 wins, held the previous record with 56 overall wins in 2006-07.
  • Return to Santa Anita: The Autumn Meet officially opens for live racing date on Friday, September 30. Until then, southern Cal interests are at Los Alamitos twice with Del Mar in between.
  • Handle: Over $17 million which was a 17% increase from the closing day of 2021.
  • Pick 6 Jackpot: Over $3.8 million was added to the existing pool which brought the total to $4.1 million. Each of the 493 winners won $6,656.80.
  • Race 11: Hong Kong Harry (Ramon Vazquez/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Grade 3 American Stakes. Hong Kong Harry, a 5-year-old Irish-bred, is 10 7-1-1 lifetime which includes a perfect 3 3-0-0 in the US -- all at Santa Anita -- since leaving Europe. 28-to-1 and 22-to-1 shots completed the trifecta ticket.

  • Race 7: Breakpoint (Tyler Baze/Neil Drysdale) won the Grade 3 $150,000 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at 9-1. The winner was foaled in Chile. Drysdale had the 5-year-old for the first time and won, something Steve Asmussen and Chad Brown could not do with two attempts each. Prior, the horse was a perfect 5 5-0-0 in Chile.

  • Race 5: Neige Blanche (Juan Hernandez/Leonard Powell) wired the field in winning the Possibly Perfect Stakes as expected, at 1-to-2. The winner was foaled in France. She is 19 9-0-4 with over half a million dollars earned. Equine athletes and their handlers can offer exhilarating pictures.

Santa Anita released data pertaining to its 76-day meet. Total handle was $778,500,000 which is 2% better than 2021.

Closing day represented a 17% increase.

Santa Anita's biggest drawback is isolation from other major hubs but weather in much of the early part of the calendar is attractive. The distance affects field sizes which is a primary interest to handicappers.

Oaklawn's (AR) purses take a bite out of some markets and certainly Arkansas has benefitted some previous southern Cal talent. Tampa Bay has exceptional turf but smaller purses.

All in all, decent numbers for Santa Anita.

Separately, safety improvements to what consumed the track a couple or so years ago have been significant assets.

Bob Baffert's 90-day suspension that began with the Kentucky Racing Commission and became universal will end July 2.

Country Grammer will return to the trainer's barn on that date and could be entered at Del Mar July 30. Country Grammer finished second in the world's richest race the $20 million Saudi Cup and won the $12 million Dubai World Cup earlier this year.

New York has commissioned a panel to determine whether Baffert will be issued a recommended 2-year ban from the three NYRA tracks but unless the ruling comes prior to July 2, Baffert could enter at the current Belmont meet or perhaps Saratoga which starts the middle of the month.

Stitched (Florent Geroux/Greg Foley) won the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury (MN) under the stars tonight. Good card. Deep fields. Plenty of nationally known connections.

Wednesday, June 23, 2022

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Post time: Changed to 10:30 am ET due to heat. The card ended around 2:30 pm ET.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Record Handle: More than $4.7 million. The prior mark was $3.7 million. It was a solid night of racing in Minnesota's biggest event.

  • Card: Northern Stars Festival races. A 10-race card which featured six stakes and five turf races offering $100,000+ purses. Deep fields, too, which is almost always an attraction.
  • National Talent: Plenty on board with Javier Castellano, Florent Geroux, Michael Maker, Brad Cox among others.

  • Race 8: Stitched (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) was sent off the favorite and won the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby, the biggest purse of the meet.

  • Race 3: Schlofmitz (Javier Castellano/Michael Maker) beat Whenthedawnbreaks (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) by a head and despite the appeal of the connections neither was sent off the favorite; Blissful (Vincent Cheminaud/Cherie DeVaux) had that tag and finished fourth.

  • Top Trainer: Tough night for local star McLean Robertson who sent out seven horses and only placed twice. He leads this meet with 23 wins.
