Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $12 million.
  • Flavien Prat is a genuinely good jockey, He had a 3-win day. He is fourth at the meet with 30 wins in his first extended NYRA campaign.
  • Todd Pletcher had his second straight 4-win day going 5 4-0-1. He is 20 8-4-2 in North America the past two days.
  • Chad Brown rebounded from a sluggish Saturday with two turf wins. His 44 wins this meet has tied David Jacobsen's 44 wins in 2013 for most victories at a Belmont meet.
  • Race 5: Sifting Sands (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) and Emaraaty (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) finished 1-2 at 7-to-1 and 8-to-1, respectively. What is odder? Getting Brown at those prices in a New York turf race or the low $1 exacta of $39.50? Something tells me those horses were buried in the exotics.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Paco Lopez is at his most comfort in New Jersey and today he rode three winners. He leads the meet with 38 victories.
  • Race 8: Green Up (Paco Lopez/Todd Pletcher), a daughter to Upstart, won the $100,000 feature race in a reduced field of four. Green Up is a Virginia-bred who is 3-for-3 under Pletcher's conditioning. Among the scratches was Gina Romantica (Samy Camacho/Chad Brown) who is a $1.02 million purchase. Maybe the 3-year-old daughter to Into Mischief is Saratoga-bound?
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: Hayne's Fever (Tais Lyapustina/Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon) wired the field at 12-to-1 in his 71st lifetime race.
  • Race 2: Queen's Sheba (Bryson Butterfly/Charlie DeMario) was the lone first-time starter -- again, a favorite betting angle -- at 40-to-1 but finished third in a nail-biter photo finish. A 23-to-1 shot was victorious which led to a $.50 tri worth over $2,400. When you come so close with the deuce horse...

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 2: The $.50 tri paid over $1,600.
  • Race 8: Gunite (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $160,000 Maxfield Overnight Stakes. The three-year-old son to Gun Runner won for the third time in eight starts.

  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $55,000.

  • Todd Pletcher has won 10 times among the 26 horses sent out since and including July 2. He has an abundance of young talent in his possession.
  • Steve Asmussen has 9,820 career wins. He is 180 victories shy of becoming the first trainer in No. America to record 10,000 wins.
  • Whatever Happened To....Georgina Baxter? She hasn't had a horse sent out since winning at Tampa Bay in February. She has won at a 26% clip in her four-year career, mostly at Gulfstream (FL). Did she return to England? Inquiring minds want to know.
  • Hank Goldberg passed away on what is his 82nd birthday. Goldberg was a huge supporter of horse racing and anyone from south Florida knows his talent and dedication. As was said with Bob Neumeier, the highest compliment to a horse player is to call him a degenerate's degenerate and he was that. Skillful and more.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $12 million.
  • Chad Brown recorded an all-time record 45 wins this meet which surpassed the prior record held by David Jacobsen, 45 wins in 2013.
  • Irad Ortiz (3 wins) and Dylan Davis (2) continue to battle atop the riders' standings at the meet. Currently, Davis has a 3-win lead (45 wins) with Ortiz, Jr. (42) in second place.
  • Race 9: Annapolis (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) was splendid in winning the $100,000 Manila Stakes.

Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 3: Dr. Blarney (Tammi Piermarini/Karl Grusmark) won for the 26th time in 37 starts. The rare Massachusetts-bred still running is 9 years old and has earned approximately $750,000. Piermarini, a Mass-native, is the third winningest female jockey in No. America history. Most of her success came in her home state at Suffolk Downs (MA). Piermarini last rode in November when she injured a knee in the starting gate at Finger Lakes. Grusmark has been training for nearly 60 years as he began in 1965. One of the last vestiges of a state that once thrived in the sport of horse racing.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 2: Empire G (Alexandria Lucia/Jason Forde) gave the jockey-trainer combination an improbable victory even at 5-to-1. The jockey got her first win on her first start since 2018. Prior to today, she rode at just two tracks: Mountaineer (WV) and the now shuttered Hazel Park (MI), the latter track the most recent entity to offer T-breds in Michigan. Forde has his own story as he was 0-for-80 lifetime.
1656975075076.png

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Onto Ellis Park through August 28. Churchill Downs returns for one-day of racing August 13 as part of its resurrection of Arlington Million. Then Kentucky Downs holds the annual popular meet during the opening half of September.
  • Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione with 62 victories, almost doubled his closest challenger. It is his eighth Churchill Downs riding title. He is "Mr. Kentucky."

  • Leading Trainer: Steve Asmussen with 25 wins which is his 26th Churchill Downs' title, most ever. He has 846 wins at the track, number one in that category, too. Brad Cox finished second with 23.
  • Race 6: Gulfport (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $175,000 Bashford Manor for 2-year-olds as the overwhelming favorite at 1-to-5. He decimated the field by more than 12 lengths, a record for this race, in his second start to improve to 2 2-0-0. He was purchased for $275,000. Keep an eye on this puppy, another potential star son to Uncle Mo.

  • Race 7: Wonder Wheel (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) won the $175,000 Debutante by more than 6 lengths and is now 2 2-0-0. The 2-year-old daughter to Into Mischief, another star sire,

  • Race 8: Cody's Wish (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $175,000 Hanshin Stakes. The 4-year-old son to Curlin is 9 5-1-3 and a perfect 4 4-0-0 at CD. A touching moment following the race as Alvarado met with 16-year-old Kentucky native Cody Dorman who was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome and who communicates through a tablet. Alvarado is a good and sometimes overlooked rider, stated often by me through the years, but this was something different.

  • Race 9: Gilded Age (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won at 7-to-1. The duo went back-to-back but this time the rider closed with a furious rally.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Stewart Elliott-Steve Asmussen won the first three races and four total. The trainer is 181 wins shy of 10,000. He is likely to get it this year but what a story if he could somehow accumulate enough wins to approach 10,000 near Breeders' Cup weekend.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 9: Becca Taylor (Juan Hernandez/Steven Miyadi) won the Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes. The 4-year-old California-bred is a gaudy 10 9-1-0 lifetime and entered off a Grade 3 win at Santa Anita. The $2 Pick 6 paid $38,000+.

Saratoga opens July 14. Arguably the most popular meet on the racing calendar and certainly tops east of Kentucky.

Del Mar races July 22.

Ellis opens its 100th year Friday, July 8.

There is always a buzz about Saratoga but this year there is something enhanced. Last year, it was a return to normalcy but this year it is about the athletes and among others Todd Pletcher's barn is beaming with talent.

$6,265,037,551 bet on No. America racing this year through June, holds steady with 2021, up 23% from 2020 and +10% from 2019.

According to charts, handle in June was down 1.7% from 2021 across No. America with $974 million wagered in the month. Field sizes were lower and that is always a primary interest of handicappers.

Belmont's weaker than expected card for Belmont Stakes didn't help and about $13 million less was bet this year ($98 million in 2022) compared to 2021.

First six months of the past four years:
  • 2022: $6,265,037,551
  • 2021: $6,277,261,005
  • 2020: $5,054,526,907
  • 2019: $5,672,774,271

I did not know Equibase and Bloodhorse share the same facility. Both were problematic last night but Equibase was troublesome today especially when it pertained to changes and scratches. Thankfully, it was a lighter than usual day.
got a post on another site that said they resumed full strength at 3 pm, no issues from what I receive from Blood Horse in terms of race results they were on generator power most of the night it seems

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 3: Cardi G (Skyler Zaplitny/Jamie Ness) was the first mount of the career of a jockey that appears to have been a West Chester State 2020 graduate based on research. She rode for Ness, one of the highest-percentage trainers in the land and currently third in wins in 2022.
  • Race 1: Akingisalwaysaking (Keyner Zonnett/Melvin Ovaldo) won at 48-to-1 and gave the 26-year-old rider from Venezuela his first win in the USA. The rider had a handful of rides at Santa Anita. At 27-to-1, the runner up was the second longest price. The $1 exacta paid $350.90.

Tyler Gaffalione currently sits as the winningest jockey in No. america this year.

He is busy on and off the track as he not only won a Churchill Downs' riding title for the seventh consecutive meet, was named Jockey of the Week in North America today and will ride at Saratoga when the meet opens later this month but he will also marry his fiancée in less than a week. Casi Edwards, whose father Bob is the head of e5 Racing (Edwards' family of five) and ran a pharmaceuticals company in Boca Raton, is New Jersey-born + Florida-raised; Gaffalione is a native Floridian.

Nice to see the Jockey Club nominate Sheldon Russell as Jockey of the Week for his return, a win in his first mount, after an absence since September due to multiple broken bones including leg, foot and collarbone. Same with Junior Alvarado in part to the feel-good story on board Cody's Wish as mentioned in an earlier post.

TV coverage for this weekend. Again, heavy emphasis on racing in Delaware, Indiana, Iowa and New York in addition to southern Cal.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $11 million.
  • Race 9: Moon Hunter (John Velazquez/Michelle Hemingway) won the finale at 16-to-1. This is the second time this meet the Hall of Famer has ridden for the Virginia-born trainer who was working at tracks in South Africa and trained her first winner in North America last year An interesting if not odd connection that I mentioned the last time the pair teamed.
  • Race 4: Channel Maker (Luis Saez/Bill Mott) won the $150,000 Grand Couturier Stakes. The well-traveled 8-year-old Ontario-bred, who has raced in four countries, won for the second time in three starts this year and also for the 9th time in 46 lifetime starts in which he has earned over $3.6 million.

  • Leading Jockey: Dylan Davis has 46 wins followed by Irad Ortiz, Jr. (42) and Manny Franco (39).
  • Leading Trainer: Chad Brown has 45 wins and will win the meet comfortably. He already broke the record for most wins at ant spring/summer Belmont meet.
  • Closing Weekend: The meet wraps on Sunday. Then comes Saratoga beginning July 14, arguably the most anticipated racing meet in North America.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot paid $118,000.
  • Race 6: Emisael Jaramillo fell during a race and suffered what has been reported as multiple broken ribs.
  • Handle: $5.1 million.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Vernon Bush rode two mounts and both won. Bush has five wins this year with his prior victory in 2017. He stopped riding in 2018 following an injury to his foot. Bush was a legend at Suffolk Downs (MA) and has over 3,200 wins but yet he broke his own maiden at this track in 1978 when it was known as River Downs. His roots are in Cincinnati/northern Kentucky.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Opening Day: The first day of the meet which is the 100th year of the track's existence.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Chalk: Favorites won the final five races on an 8-race card.

Cool photo:
  • Steve Asmussen sent out horses in five states -- KY, IA, TX, LA, IN -- and finished the day 13 4-1-4. He is now 172 wins shy of 10,000.
  • Kenny McPeek won three stakes, included two graded, at tracks in New York, Indiana and Iowa.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle $26 million on what was a strong card. Among visiting riders were Frankie Dettori and Mike Smith.
  • Penultimate Day: Tomorrow closes the popular meet.
  • Leading Jockey Dylan Davis has a 1-win lead over Irad Ortiz, Jr.
  • Leading Trainer: Chad Brown in a record-setting performance. He has 47 wins at last count, most ever for a trainer at Belmont for this meet.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Joel Rosario each rode three winners.
  • Race 11: Sheriff Bianco (Tyler Gaffalione/Wesley Ward) won the finale which gave the jockey his 165th win in 2022 and that snapped a temporary tie with Irad Ortiz, Jr. who rode three winners today. Gaffalione's first half to July 2022 also includes winning the Churchill Downs meet championship, named Jockey of the Week in North America, plans to ride at the prestigious Saratoga and on July 12 marrying his fiancee Casi. The $1 Pick 6 returned over $154,000.

  • Race 4: Dynamic One (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the 136th running of the Grade 2 $400,000 Suburban Handicap. Pletcher indicated Dynamic One would race next in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

  • Race 7: McKulick (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the Grade I $700,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational.

  • Race 8: Hot Peppers (Luis Saez/Rudy Rodriguez) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Victory Ride Stakes.

  • Race 9: Classic Causeway (Julien Leparoux/Kenny McPeek) won the Grade 1 $1,000,000 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes in his first try on turf. Classic Causeway succeeded for the first time since winning the Tampa Bay Derby in March. Since then, he had 11th place finishes in both the Florida and Kentucky Derbies and finished third in the Ohio Derby.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 6: Key Biscayne (Daniel Centeno/Juan Alvarado) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Robert Dick Memorial Stakes at the imposing odds of 36-to-1 and returned $74.20.

  • Race 7: Miss Leslie (Angel Cruz/Claudio Gonzalez) won the $500,000 Grade 2 Delaware Handicap by a record-setting 12 lengths. A good showing for Maryland connections. The rider was especially in a celebratory tone following a rare graded stakes win.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Tough card to handicap with racing off the turf and scratches plenty. Turned out to be a throwaway.
Horseshoe Indiana (Indiana):
  • Handle: More than $7 million.
  • Florent Geroux rode three winners.
  • Race 11: Interstatedaydream (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Indiana Oaks. The winner was bred in Ontario.

  • Race 12: Actuator (James Graham/Michael McCarthy) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby.

Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Race 7: Butterbean (Glenn Corbett/Kenny McPeek) broke last but rallied strongly to win the Grade 3 $250,000 Iowa Oaks. Butterbean has won three straight after starting her career with five defeats. Among the defeated was Falconet (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) who was sent off the favorite following wins at Churchill Downs and Keeneland but placed.

  • Race 8: Ain't Life Grand (Elvin Gonzalez/Kelly Von Hemel) won the $250,000 Iowa Derby for a trainer who is in the track's Hall of Fame. The winner was the lone Iowa-bred in the race. He is 6 4-0-2 lifetime.
  • Race 9: Officiating (Javier Castellano/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Cornhusker Handicap.

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 5: Rhetoric (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) waltzed in the $50,000 MDW. Baffert sent out two horses in the race, his first entries since April 2 following a 90-day suspension originally issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for the use of a cream to treat a rash to 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit who was later DQ'd from that victory.

  • Race 9: High Connection (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby. He has won this race 12 times including the last six years.

  • Bob Baffert sent out a total of four horses in two races and returned with victories both times.

Belmont (New York):
  • Closing Day: The meet, which began April 28, spanned 44 racing days. ONTO SARATOGA OPENING DAY JULY 14.
  • Leading Jockey: Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three times on the final day to edge Dylan Davis who won the last race of the meet. Davis began the day with a 1-win lead but was overtaken mid-card. Ortiz, Jr. finished 174 48-32-20 with purse earnings of $5,149,496. He won at a 27.59% clip. Ortiz, Jr. won a NYRA title for the 19th time.
  • Leading Trainer: Chad Brown won the Spring/Summer meet with an all-time record-high 48 victories and that extended a record-setting seventh consecutive time. He had a win percentage of 30.72% and finished in-the-money 64.71% of the time. David Jacobson held the prior mark with 44 wins in 2013.
  • Leading Owner: Michael Dubb with 16 wins under various groups. He ended 61 16-10-7 winning a 26.23%.
  • Race 6: The top five horses were separated by what appeared to be two lengths.
  • Race 8: Market Alert (Jose Ortiz/James Ryerson) won the $100,000 Saginaw Stakes. Ryerson doubled his win total this meet and finished 48 2-8-9 (4%)

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Steve Asmussen added three wins to his massive career total of victories. He had four wins in the U.S. today to bring his career total to 9.832. The winningest trainer in North America history, he is 168 wins shy of 10,000.
  • Race 4: River Kat (Jansen Melancon/Frank Lucarelli) gave the Washington-based trainer his 2,000th lifetime win.

Perhaps horse racing's most magnetic meet. Thursday, July 14, Saratoga's opening day. The race course that opened in 1863. it is often stated that a trip to Saratoga is going back in time. The bucolic setting is ideal for the truest experience of horse racing
