Horse Racing: The end of 2022

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. • Steve Asmussen added four wins to his all-time record which stands at 9,791.
Belmont (New York):
  • Card: Nine hours of activity. Superstars on display including but not limited to Flightline and Jack Christopher. Belmont had some hiccups with its card but was not short on talent.
  • Attendance: 46,000+
  • Handle: $50.25 million bet on the race part of $98.77 million bet on the 13-race card. Numbers were down from last year. Some of the fields were short on value and fields are often the driving motivator for a handicapper.
  • Hat Tricks: Flavien Prat rode three winners. Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown, among the most successful trainers annually, both had three winners.
  • Race 3: Matareya (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) won the Grade I $500,000 Acorn Stakes. The 3-year-old filly has won four straight races. The field was reduced to four when prohibitive favorite Echo Zulu (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) came up lame near the gate.

  • Race 4: Regal Glory (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $500,000 Just A Game Stakes. A fourth straight win for the 6-year-old mare. Brown had three of the five horses in the race.

  • Race 5: Fearless (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 2 $400,000 Brooklyn Stakes. The 16th race for the winner was his first try at Belmont.

  • Race 6: Jack Christopher (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) is a sensation and won the Grade I $400,000 Woody Stephens by a staggering 10 lengths. The 3-year-old son to Munnings is a perfect 4 4-0-0 and is destined for even greater things. As called on track "Oh, Woody himself would appreciate this effort!" Jack Christopher, another special equine athlete, received a 107 Beyer which is the highest for any 3-year-old in North America this year.

  • Race 7: Clairiere (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) defeated Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) in perhaps the best stretch battle of the day to win the Grade I $500,000 Ogden Phipps. The winner is 13 5-4-2 and has earned over $1.7 million. The runner up was purchased for $1.05 million and is now 10 7-2-1 lifetime with earnings of more than $2 million. Letruska (Jose Ortiz/Fausto Gutierrez) was sent early but folded despite being the favorite. She is 26 19-1-1. This was a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race.

  • Race 8: Casa Creed (Luis Saez/Bill Mott) won the $400,000 Grade I Jaipur Stakes in a repeat victory in this race. This was a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race.

  • Race 9: Flightline (Flavien Prat/John Sadler), a $1,000,000 purchase, won the Grade I $1 million Met Mile in impressive style but only after a rocky start and is now a perfect 4 4-0-0. He has won his races by more than a combined 43 lengths. The 4-year-old son to Tapit is a true superstar. He won this race following a 6-month layoff due to setbacks. He is one to watch. Flightline received 112 Beyer Figure which is the second highest awarded to any horse in North America this year. The only horse with a higher figure this year was Speaker's Corner who lost to Flightline in this race. Flightline's next race could be Saratoga in August or California in September. New York owners. California-trained. We shall see.

  • Race 10: Tribhuvan (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $750,000 Manhattan Stakes. The trainer had four of 10 in this race and this was nearly the longest odds on the board. Brown... on turf ... in New York. Brown finished 1-2. Tribhuvan received a 108 Beyer which is tied for second highest mark issued to any North America turf runner this year.

  • Race 11: Mo Donegal (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the 154th edition of the Grade I $1.5 million Belmont stakes which is the third leg of the Triple Crown. The son to Uncle Mo is 7 4-0-2. Ortiz showed uncommonly raw emotion following the win. Pletcher won the Belmont for the fourth time. He was my tepid pick in the Kentucky Derby but due to the inside hole, even with the new starting gate, that pick was lukewarm. Here, he seemed more of a natural fit and his late kick would be an asset if needed. New York regular connections also was a plus. Pletcher finished 1-2 when Nest (Jose Ortiz/Todd Pletcher) placed.

  • Race 12: Al's Rocket (Irad Ortiz Jr./Todd Pletcher) won and despite the paltry purse of $55,000 (by comparison to the prior race), the jockey remained professional and composed. His brother was runner up similarly to the prior race. The Ortiz brothers, as I have stated a few times, have to be in the discussion of greatest brother duos who performed at the same time with near-equal success in any pro sport.

  • Steve Asmussen ships to a variety of tracks from New York to Kentucky to Iowa to Louisiana and Texas and others. The past three days he finished 32 10-2-5. He has 9,792 wins lifetime, #1 on the list. He needs 208 wins to reach 10,000. To accomplish that this year, he will have at least 409 wins this year and that falls within the 400-454 range of the past four years. It will be interesting to see where and when it happens. This should be something the industry recognizes as the feat nears.
Belmont (New York):
  • Race 3: Hot Peppers (Luis Saez/Rudy Rodriguez) won the $150,000 Jersey Girl Stakes in dominant fashion. The winner was bred in Florida and ran outside her home state for the first time. She is 6 4-1-0.

  • Dylan Davis leads the meet with 34 wins followed by Irad Ortiz, Jr.'s 32 victories. Davis won once today. Ortiz hit the board just once on six rides, perhaps Belmont Stakes hangover.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Races 4 and 5: The longstanding tandem of Xavier Perez and John Robb went back-to-back.
  • Race 6: Vodkatini (Jevian Toledo/Michael Stidham) withstood an inquiry in winning the race. Luminist (Feargal Lynch/Brittany Russell) placed.

  • Race 7: Mr. Thrifty (Abner Adorno/Eli Betancourt) proved to be the first of consecutive shocking results winning 44-to-1 as the second longest price on the board. Kudos to anyone who had this $91 winner who shipped in from Philadelphia. Thirteen of his prior 15 starts, starting in 2021, have been at Parx (PA). This was one of the most electrifying races of the day.

  • Race 8: Lady Cage Fighter (Jean Alvelo/James Lawrence) won at 14-to-1. The resulting $1 double was the largest I have seen at Laurel at $832.20.

  • Brittany Russell is ice cold this meet going 9 0-2-0. She has shared or won the past two Maryland meets. She'll be back.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Card: 14 races which is rare in itself for any track.
  • Race 14: The $.20 Pick 6 paid $62,000+ to all winners. There was over $2.9 million added to the pool.
  • Junior Alvarado rode three winners. He has a good 20% win strike and 51% in the money this meet.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: Cyberknife (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox), coming off an 18th place finish in the 2022 Kentucky Derby, nipped Howling Time (Joe Talamo/Dale Romans) in a thriller to win the $225,000 Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes. This was the race of the day in more ways than one. Angles can be deceiving but I thought the inside horse won live and after the first replay.

  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners to up his total to 40 this meet. Unless something unforeseen occurs, he is almost assured of winning his eighth Churchill Downs title, which includes the last seven meets. Pat Day holds the record for wins at a CD Spring meet with 90 during 55 days in 1991. The 2022 meet ends July 4.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 9: Under the Stars (Juan Hernandez/Sean McCarthy) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Summertime Oaks Stakes. Ganadora (Abel Cedillo/Sean McCarthy), a $1,000,000 purchase, gave way and ended a sluggish fourth at 7-to-1. Both horses were sent to the barn of McCarthy from the currently suspended Bob Baffert whose ban ends July 2. Arizona-bred Desert Dawn (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) was sent off the favorite but finished third.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Mark Casse had four winners. He has 38 wins this meet -- which extends into December -- twice more than his closest challenger.

And we are underway at Royal Ascot. Note: odds may be different based on source.

Tuesday, June 14, 2022

Ascot Racecourse [Royal Ascot] (Ascot, England):

  • Race 1: Baaeed (Jim Crowley/William Haggas) won the Royal Ascot opener and is Breeders' Cup bound. Some will lay claim that Baaeed is the best active horse in the world. At 1-to-6 (British), those are imposing odds. He was unraced as a 2-year-old, went 6-for-6 last year and is now perfect in 8 starts.

  • Race 2: Bradsell (Hollie Doyle/Archie Watson) was sent off 8-to-1 and won the second race at Royal Ascot. The jockey, who became the first female rider to win three Royal Ascot races, was suspended two days following this win for improper usage of the whip.

1655258376802.png
  • Race 3: Nature Strip (James McDonald/Chris Waller), an Australian-bred, paid $6.50 to win race 3. Among the defeated was Golden Pal (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward), a 2-time Breeders' Cup winner from the US, who had a tough start, never recovered and the anticipated showdown with the eventual winner never materialized. He finished last of 16.

  • Race 4: Coroebus (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won by a head and paid $3.70. The first Irish-bred to win at Royal Ascot 2022. Irish-breds finished 1-2-3-4.

  • Race 5: Coltrane (Callum Hutchinson/Andrew Balding) was the first lofty winner this meet paying $32.60. Hutchinson is a 5-pound bug who won a race at Royal Ascot for the first time. The race was 2.5 Miles. Irish-breds finished 1-3-4.

  • Race 6: Dubai Future (Daniel Tudhope/Saeed Bin Suroor) paid a gigantic $51.60 in victory.

  • Race 7: Get Shirty (Daniel Tudhope/David O'Meara) paid $29.10 in victory in the conclusion to the first day of Royal Ascot. This was the third straight race in which a price topped tickets. Irish-breds finished 1-2-3-4.

And we are underway at Royal Ascot:

Ascot Racecourse [Royal Ascot] (Ascot, England):

  • Race 1: Baaeed (Jim Crowley/William Haggas) won the Royal Ascot opener and is Breeders' Cup bound. Some will lay claim that Baaeed is the best active horse in the world. At 1-to-6 (British), those are imposing odds. He was unraced as a 2-year-old, went 6-for-6 last year and is now perfect in 8 starts.

  • Race 2: Bradsell (Hollie Doyle/Archie Watson) was sent off 7-to-1 and won the second race at Royal Ascot.

  • Race 3: Nature Strip (James McDonald/Chris Waller), an Australian-bred, paid $6.50 to win race 3. Among the defeated was Golden Pal (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward), a 2-time Breeders ' Cup winner from the US, who had a tough start, never recovered and the anticipated showdown with the eventual winner never materialized.

I was on Coltrane but I got quite worse odds :D

Baaeed won easy once again but I was most impressed by the Australian Nature Strip who confirmed as the best sprinter worldwide right now. What a performance!

Nice.

Something happened with Irad Ortiz, Jr. at the gate on board Golden Pal. I think he got distracted.

The horse next to it reared up on the stalls and they scratched him immediately, which Irad didn't expect. British things, I also thought they would delay the start a bit more. I don't think he was winning anyway

I read that later but didn't see it on video replay. Thanks. I am out of my area of comfort with racing overseas, rather I watch as a sport. Very much turf talent especially in the UK.

In all that is holy, my word, 50-1 morning lines for the winner and runner up in the 7th race at Ascot.

The $2 tri paid the equal of $107,335 in US money.

Among the tracks in the US canceling racing today due to heat are Churchill Downs (KY), Indiana (OH), Thistledown (OH), Belterra (OH), Wheeling greyhounds (WV) and Mountaineer (WV).

Churchill has canceled Thursday's card.

  • Canceled due to cautionary measures related to heat: Churchill Downs (KY), Indiana (OH), Thistledown (OH), Belterra (OH), Wheeling greyhounds (WV) and Mountaineer (WV). Churchill has canceled Thursday's card.
Ascot Racecourse [Royal Ascot] (Ascot, England):
  • Race 1: Dramatised (Daniel Tudhope/Karl Burke) paid $8,00 in winning the Queen Mary Stakes in a field of 21. The jockey won for a third time this meet.

  • Race 2: Eldar Eldarov (David Egan/Roger Varian) paid $5.10 in winning the Queen's Vase in a nail-biter.

  • Race 3: State of Rest (Shane Crosse/Joseph O'Brien) paid $17.30 in winning the Prince of Wales's Stakes and its $1.4 million purse. The winning connections get an invite to the Breeders' Cup Turf. Crosse won at Royal Ascot for the first time. O'Brien won at Royal Ascot for the first time in his new role following six such victories as a jockey. His father, who has been the leading trainer at Royal Ascot a record 10 times, trained the winner in Race 6.

  • Race 4: Saffron Beach (William Buick/Jane Chapple-Hyam) paid $6.40 in winning the Duke of Cambridge Stakes. The connections are pondering a future Breeders' Cup race.

  • Race 5: Dark Shift (James McDonald/Charles Hill) paid $14,70 in winning the Royal Hunt Cup. The $2 trifecta paid over $11,000. The winner wore number 27 in a field of 30,

  • Race 6: Little Big Bear (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) paid $4.30 in winning the Windsor Castle Stakes in a field of 24. O'Brien has been the leading trainer at Royal Ascot a record 10 times. His son won for the first time as a trainer in in the day.

  • Race 7: Rising Star (Neil Callan/Marco Botti) paid an enormous $103.10 in winning the Kensington Palace Stakes. The $1 exacta was a staggering $3,023.60 as two horses with 50-to-1 morning lines performed the unthinkable. The $2 trifecta returned over $107,000 in a colossal payout. Callan last won at Royal Ascot in 2012.
