Player Discussion: The Elvis Thread

Things are a lot different if 1 or 2 of those 3 post shots that beat him clean go in, in the 1st period.

He’s still all over the place and gets lucky more often than not. It’s still ridiculously early into the year and his career.

All the things said about Elvis now, we’re said about Steve Mason.

Korpisalo is the better goalie at blocking pucks.

One of these days you're going to have to tell us you're exact relation to Korpi or in what way Elvis ran over your dog.

I know hockey. Thank you, though. If you have anything to add involving hockey or actual goaltending skills, now is the time.

Have all these same things said about Elvis NOT been said about Steve Mason, by “many” people??

I like Korpi. I think he's playing very well this season. I've got no issues with him. I just think Elvis is playing better and that the team is playing better in front of him. Maybe it's because of Kivi, I don't know. But I know what I see and it's not what you see.

Elvis is t-4th in save % across the entire league since the start of his career at .922 (min. 20 games). Fwiw, Korpisalo has posted a .903 save % in that same time, which ranks t-54th (out of 72).

In his last 50 regular season starts (55 GP total), which is basically ignoring his first 9 starts in North America in which he went 0-5-4, he's posted a 25-17-9 record with an .927 save % (behind only Corey Crawford and Chris Driedger in that time) and a 2.32 GAA with 7 shutouts. Korpisalo has posted an 11-17-8 record with an .894 save % and a 3.32 GAA in that time with no shutouts.

I'm happy to counter - I've followed goalies since I've been a fan, and I play the position.
(and just because I've never played at any professional level doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about)

Goalies have their positions, their own way of playing the game - there is nothing awful about the way either Korpi or Elvis plays.
And I for one don't buy the theory that the team plays better in front of Elvis....sure, they may get a confidence boost when he plays well for them and makes the big saves - but Korpi did the same thing in te first round against Toronto. Temas thrive on their goalies strong play.

Can't we just enjoy that we have two really good goalies? It doesn't have to be a battle constantly.

Even when we win in pretty convincing fashion we still have to have these players vs player fights, when they’re on the same team.

The team has made its choice. It’s pretty clear. You can feel korpi is better or not, but they’re both here. I don’t get dragging either one of them. I really don’t, especially since they’re both being good soldiers about this whole thing.

You don't seem to care that both these guys are wearing CBJ jerseys/ sweaters. I want them both to be outstanding.. I hope they stand on their fvkeeng heads every single night. Maybe Korpi will have the better career, but stop dumping on Elvis. The dude is really good and he deserves your respect. I am a huge fan of Korpi and hopes he steps up to the challenge.

My eyes see what other posters have stated. This team seems to rally in front of Elvis. The guy just has a great personality. We will need Jonas at his very best this year, so get your sleep and show up at practice tomorrow ready to go.

To be clear, I’m literally simply responding to people clearly egging me on and making comments about my opinions directly and indirectly. Not to mention the attacks on Korpisalo, when he HAS NOT played bad in the games he has played.

All because Elvis has won games to start the year, and Korpisalo has not. The hypocrisy is ridiculous, all the attacking of Korpisalo is ‘ok’, yet, i’m attacked for saying the same things about Elvis??

And yes, Steve Mason, and the way many people looked at him after after having good numbers over a short period of time, is a perfect example.

Elvis having better stats since he’s been in the NHL makes him a better player the same way Roslovic having better statistics than Domi last year makes him a better player….IT DOESNT!!

I think your extremely vocal position has just made you extra sensitive to goalie critiques. I don't see the 1-sided attacking you're talking about.

The egging on though, yeah I do see that.

1) How many times have you asked someone how they would like their eggs?

2) Did you not ask people to holla you?

Don’t play the victim. Your opinions are yours and they’re welcome. How you present them may or may not have an impact on how they are engaged.

Dude, there’s like 7 posters who were around for the Steve Mason years. At least the good one, nobody really liked him in the final 3-4 years.

We can debate the skills/accomplishments of both of the goalies but it isn't going to change what clearly seems to be the direction moving forward in goal. Korpi deserves a chance to be a starter but the team signed Elvis long term for a reason. They see him as their starter for the next 5 years. So unless Korpi wants to be a backup and accept backup money then he's going to be on a new team next season. He may be traded at the deadline or he may stay with the team for the rest of the season but I don't see him back next season.

Im not playing the victim, I just don’t want people to assume or make claims that I initiated the back and forth. (Today :naughty:)

I also don’t think I should be attacked for the things I say about Elvis just because he is a CBJ player, when people say worse things about Korpisalo, who ALSO is a CBJ player.

The issue is, Elvis HAS been better for this year and in the past. The team also plays better for Elvis, whether that's a Korpi personality issue or just pure variance remains to be discovered. I honestly don't care to debate that. Korpi is known for soft goals where as Elvis has gotten better since he's been in the league. I think it's pretty obvious who the better goalie is at this point, the numbers back it up, the eye test backs it up, for whatever it seems you are glued to "Elvis's wreckless style" of goaltending. But hey, guess what, it works and I trust him a whole lot more to win games that Korpisalo at this point.

Also the Steve Mason comparison is laughable. Since Elvis and Mason both have had good starts to their careers in the NHL, Elvis = Mason is a good example? Is that like saying Elvis is also the next Brodeur? You're going off about as much information to claim it one way or another. No one knows zilch at this point so why don't we just watch how things play out. For now, Elvis is the starter and deservedly so.

one thing that I would like to see Elvis improve is his play away from Nationwide arena. don’t get me wrong, his play this year has been incredible, but I couldn’t help but notice this. these are his career numbers. rarely ever do you see splits this drastic. pretty eye opening.

Remember...he started 0-5-3 to begin his career in North America. 7 of those 8 starts came on the road.

You can see how much of a drag those first 8 games were on his stats. I think it'll balance out as the sample size becomes larger.

FWIW, this is Bob's home and road splits in 16-17 when he won a Vezina.
