Player Discussion: The Elvis Thread

Big year for Elvis. Elvis was very up and down last year - home vs road - so he needs to tighten up his road performance. Of course he needs better play in front of him but I’m expecting the D group to perform better as some younger guys gain experience though I honestly can’t say which ones will step up. But I do think Elvis will and sure hope he does because if he doesn’t show himself to be a playoff caliber goalie it’s not going to prove to be a good contract.

I really like the guy - his teammates seem to as well - and I’m pulling for him big time.

I agree with all of this. Being one year removed from the Kivi situation has to help. But, big year for Elvis. Goalie is the position that concerns me the most over the next few years. I hope Elvis bounces back.

over elvis’ last 35 games including tonight’s play, he has a save percentage of exactly .900 and a GAA of 3.28.

yeah, not good.

As a Latvian fan, I can say Elvis worries me recently.

Last year, he was really average, but I said to myself - it's because of historically horrible CBJ defense and he did OK given the situation.
Then, in the WC he was horrible and Silovs, the 3rd or 4th goalie in the Canucks system, completely outplayed him and took over the starter role. And I said to myself - well, he had an unusually long and hard year, maybe he just gassed out. Silovs was motivated and the team played carefully in front of him.
Now, his stats are bad again. And I want to think that the CBJ defense or his recent illness have something to do with this. Or he is just unlucky. Or the shots were unsavable. But at some point, the excuses will end. He cant continue to allow more than 3 goals a game, especially in games where there are only 20 something shots.

Elvis has been concerning for a bit. It's almost like he has no focus until the game is on the line and then he plays well. Unfortunately, against good teams, that doesn't work.

I would look for suitors, that contract is not looking good and I don't expect him to massively improve at his age. First they have to see if Tarasov can start but enough excuses for Elvis. He's been objectively bad.

I was concerned last year, but chalked it up mostly to his off ice trauma and awful defense.

While both still may be true today (the defense is especially still bad) the results are the same. He’s not it. Which is very concerning considering his new contract just kicked in.

Maybe when he loosens up and gets going into the season he will be better, but I don’t have much confidence in that. Nor do I have much confidence in the defense to help him out and make life easier

Honeymoon over??

Most people know my feelings on the situation. Sucks that Korpisalo is out hurt again, many times in the past his “opportunity” or “chance” from poor play from another goalie was ruined from him getting banged up/injured/sick.

Horrible contract from Jarmo.

Here’s my totally unqualified take on Elvis I’m simply based on what my eyes tell me. He doesn’t appear to possess great technique. Instead Elvis is a goalie who relies on quickness and acrobatics. That style is prone to inconsistency - big highs and lows - and bad goals, too. I’m not sure it’s a sustainable approach.

My other observation, one I’ve cited before, is that Elvis fancies himself as a puck-handler but vastly overrated his skill. As such he’s out of the net too often and unable to get back into proper position.

I am hopeful Tarasov proves to be a true #1 though that’s a big unknown at this point. Korpi isn’t that guy.

Honest question – what's the difference between playing road game and home for a goalie? Is it the match-ups? All above good goalies should be the difference maker in games regardless of the match-up, even when you have a non-favourable D-pair against a scoring line. IMO Elvis needs to step up big time if he wants to keep the no.1 spot.

Your assesment of him is pretty much 1:1 to mine. Not very solid fundamentals or great technique but when he's on his best game, has the ability to make great saves and get by with his unyielding will of "none shall pass" :) I said it before somewhere, but reminds me a bit of Pekka Rinne, except smaller and not quite as good at anything.

Ofc Rinne at his best was an absolute monster, so you could be very much a "Rinne lite" and still be a fine goalie, but even Rinne was prone to softies and had quite a bit of bad games for a goalie of his caliber. But when he had a good night, and there were many of those, there wasn't another goalie in the world I'd rather have between the pipes. I've not seen enough of those by Elvis, though there's been some.

At the moment the ratio of good Elvis to bad Elvis is just not good enough and I hope Tarasov or even Korpi when he's back can keep him honest and give us a better benchmark to judge Elvis against.

As it stands now, I think that the coach should do what Paul Maurice did with Connor Helleybuck and Michael Hutchinson back in 2017. Both of them showed some promise, but both were very uneven in their performance. They both got a fair chance to prove their worth, and Helleybuck came out on top and went on to win a Vezina trophy a few seasons later. There is a healthy competition atm, and Tarasov may very well steal the starting goalie position from Elvis, if he doesn't raise his game and become a more steady presence between the pipes.

Elvis needs to be better. Tarasov may be a long term solution but nobody knows. There is nobody else within the organization that is a long term solution in net.

CBJ could have Vasilevsky and tye and some of you would still bitch and complain and blame him...... Hell, we had a Vezina wimner between the pipes, and we did exactly that.
Fanbase that doesn't know or appreciate goaltending.
There were pockets of people complaining about Bob, but it’s nowhere near the level Elvis and Korpi have experienced.

Because they’ve earned it.
