Player Discussion: The Elvis Thread

I dislike talking about goalies because it is all voodoo. But one simple observation I can make is that Elvis' technique has gotten worse. He's off his game. He's trying to do too much and not just letting pucks hit him.

People are talking about dumping him for another goalie and all I'll say is that I've seen goalies be bad for a year or two or three and then be awesome for a few and then be bad and then be awesome, etc... There's a decent chance he figures it out in net and is our answer. That might be more likely than Tarasov or somebody else doing it.

Long-term consistency by a goalie is really rare, and I think of it more as being about mental/emotional/personal factors. That's why I was willing to give Elvis a pass on last season.

I think the right coach can make the difference in a guy's career. Unfortunately, everything I've read leads me to think Elvis believes Legace is exactly the right guy for him. That's worrisome, because it means there's no room to upgrade. So a coaching change is more likely to have a negative impact.

I would hate to see Tarasov be handed the job on a platter, because I don't think he's earned it *yet*. And Korpisalo is so far removed from his best days that it's hard to see him returning.

I guess our only option is to keep hoping Elvis figures it out. The sooner we can get Tarasov to Cleveland for a steady diet of work, the better.

This is a really good post. Acknowledges problems, acknowledges there is no simple solution.

.864 goalie this season. Third worst goals saved above expected per all publicly available models.

First year into his 5 year, $27m deal.

Elvis needs to get his game together, he's all over the place and I don't like his body language, IMO they need to give someone else some games and go from there, and after tonight's game, hard to see why they wouldn't.

Sometimes stats lie. Sometimes they just do a mic drop.

When he threw that little fit after giving up the 3rd goal, that's exactly when I wanted to pull him.

Not looking too good *but* I have to point out that expected goals models are not great evaluating "95% goal chances", which do happen during real matches because of total defensive collapses or voids on d-zone. And I have seen multiple of those this young season.

Not saying Elvis has been good, but total defensive meltdowns will result terrible rates for goalies, and obviously there have been multiple cases when Elvis has saved on those.

Absolutely nightmare. Hard to find any positive words(his personality seems friendly). He doesnt give team chance to win it goes sideways, team gives chance to win but Elvis vacuums easy goals in every game.

People don’t care about suit colors when you aren’t stopping the puck, eh?? Problem is, Elvis is the same exact goalie he’s always been. Worst contract/cap hit on the team, and it drives the team/organization into a corner in a few different ways.

While I still think Korpisalo is the superior goalie to both guys, Tarasov does have age on his side, and UNLIKE Elvis, actually has room to grow and improve.

The blame/fire Manny Legace thing is hilarious, to be clear.

The team definitely needs Elvis to take a seat for a moment. He’s always had spotty rebound control but was able to make up for it with his athleticism. Someone mentioned his technique looks off, and I’m no goalie expert but it would make sense to me. He seems far off his angles and second guessing himself. His confidence is completely rattled and that’s a tough thing to get back without playing time. But at the same time, the jackets can’t really afford to wait around and hope he recovers.

Health permitting, Tarasov should see the net. If we’re still in this position in a few weeks when Korpisalo returns, that’s a tough call to make. Obviously you can’t waive Elvis, and his trade value is nothing, but you can’t send Tarasov back if he’s playing well. Which would make Korpisalo the odd man out (or they could give him a conditioning stint in Cleveland to buy more time).

Tarasov also has size, which helps him with shots toward the far post.
Re: Legace, it's ridiculous to conclude his responsibility (at this point) but not to examine it. Coaches are evaluated by the performance of their players all the time.

Far post?? As long as he doesn’t go down too early and stays high enough in his crease.

A coach can impact player performance from lineup decisions/combos that either work well or not, but, the coach is not the guy on the ice executing plays and stopping pucks or not.

While I didn’t necessarily like his player choices all the time, like blaming Legace for Elvis supposedly getting worse, I thought it was humorous in the past when people would blame Torts for the PP woes (or a guy like Milano). This is the NHL, not Bantam AA.

Something that Torts was “mocked” or “attacked” for that he was right about, was his comments about not teaching the players how to play offense. Even though he (or Larsen or Legace) can teach some of the guys some tricks or tell them what they should do, they can’t do it for them, and they surely aren’t giving pointers to Gaudreau/Panarin, or most guys playing the PP, and you can’t blame a guy for a goalie letting in pucks that the coach probably wouldn’t let in.

I don't have anything else to add to this thread. Will comment on "has left the building" threat enthusiastically though.

This happened with Baker Mayfield and the Browns fans. His wife came to his defense and it just went downhill from there. Getting personal like this is crossing a line and unacceptable.
