anybody willing, please fill out my goalie questionnaire….
Why was Korpisalo chosen as the starter each time both guys were actually healthy and playing??
How much of an effect did Korpisalo’s injury status have on Elvis being “chosen as the starter”??
What GOALIE SKILLS make Elvis a better goalie??
Please explain what “ceiling” is to you, in terms of player potential. Bonus: What are the ages of each goalie??
Why would the CBJ put any trade clauses in his contract if the plan was to simply keep him and consider him “the starting goalie moving forward”??
How much should we take away from the “play” or statistics of the goalies or any roster player from last year??
How many games played would you consider a goalie “proven” at the NHL level??
thanks
I'll take the bait.
1. Korpisalo was chosen as the starting goalie at the start of the 2019/20 season due to many factors. The most important ones being he outperformed Elvis in the preseason, Elvis was still adjusting to NA hockey, and Tortorella clearly had a feeling of obligation to Korpi for being a good soldier and waiting his turn. We all know how much Torts thought of Korpi as a teammate, and how loyal Torts is to his guys. I think he felt he owed it to him to give him a chance after waiting his turn patiently.
Korpisalo was chosen as the starting goalie for the bubble playoffs because of the same reasons. Korpi and Elvis' numbers were pretty close, and the tie went to the goalie Torts knew better and trusted more as he was around Korpi for far longer. I think in the end Torts thought Korpi was calmer of the two goalies, which you need a steady hand in the playoffs. Which is also why he was picked to start the season last year due to all the drama the team was facing.
2. Both Korpi and Elvis have had their share of injuries. So zero.
3. I think Elvis is more athletic and isn't as prone to soft goals. Korpi being the better technically and positionally, but sometimes this part of his game lags and its when he gets into trouble. Overall I think Elvis is more consistent. Factor in soft goals, which they're both prone for, but Korpi is more prone to.
4. Ceiling means if all the things work out for the player and the team, how good is he? I don't think goalies have an age ceiling because we have seen many goalies go on absolute tears late in their careers.
5. I don't know, because players like no trade protection? I guess? Who knows.
6. Of course you factor in last season. I don't think you just burn the tape due to COVID protocols and all the drama. I think the whole picture matters more though.
7. I would say around 82-100 games started would define how good a goalies potential would be. I'm always a believer in "you have to show me twice" regarding young players. Goalies obviously don't play every single game, so 82 games is around two seasons worth of games for a usual starting goalie (maybe a little less). I don't think either Korpi or Elvis have reached their potential.
I don't think Korpi is bad at all. He's just prone to more errors. I think he's a legit starting goalie.
