I mean, can you imagine if Dubas actually decided to give Kadri a 3rd chance and as a result, we missed out on JT and he went to San Jose?? Now, remember, JT did have a good 1st year in that deal and Kadri did get suspended AGAIN in the playoffs with Colorado before finally getting his shit together. Can you imagine the vitriol that would have been spewed Dubas and Shanny’s way in the short term has that happened?? 😉😉😉😉
Pretty sure Kadri was still here for JT's first year.

At the end of the day for me, if things don't work out it doesn't particularly matter which one deserves more of the blame when they're both obviously at fault. Both will require significant changes made if it comes down to it. The front office will have made.the wrong bets and will need to go - as will many of the players they made those bets on.

I don't see it as a one or the other situation.

I don't agree. During the Lou-Babcock era effort was never the issue for these athletes. They were young and still learning the art to be a pro-athlete.

The difference between that era and the now is chalk and cheese.

The culture has gone from being a pro to carefree easy life attitude.

It's everyone's fault except for the guy who built the team

No he didn't. He scored 32 goals back to back season while playing in 3rd line

He was always good. He just got buried in depth. That happens

He was always that player.. he didn't magically become good. Only difference is he didn't get all the points.. his game hasn't changed much
Agree fully also he was pissed at demotion to 3rd line, there is a reason he wore 91 for Colorado

Matthews,Marner,Nylander,Rielly,Kadri,
Kapanen,jonsson,Jvr,Hyman,brown.
A very young,very fast,skilled core.
Just work on improving the D and watch them grow.
Dubas then went after Tavares.
He was supposed to be a superstar difference maker. A mini crosby.
Look at what happened.
Fire the whole management team.
And for me i would keep Matthews,Marner, and Rielly and move the rest or at least try.

To be fair, to Dubas you can't win when it comes to contract negotiations. If Dubas pulled the same shit with Marner and Matthews like he did with Nylander, a lot of people who are screaming at him now would have probably screamed at him for holding out with our franchise #1 centre. In the long run it would have probably been the smart thing to do, but he would be crucified having two straight years of holdouts with 3 of your top players. In situations like that you have to hope your stars will take less (even though they are 100% not obligated to do so) aside from Nylander who went through a 3 month hold out, Matthews and Marner cashed in.
IMO we brought in the wrong guy to mentor the stars in Marleau. He was never known for being a 'team first' guy, and it appears to have rubbed off on our stars.

People say Dubas caved to the players demands, he did, but they simply were not going to sign for less than they wanted. They didn't have too, and Nylander proved it by sitting out as long as possible to get a deal, that was OK in the end, but still more expensive than his peers.

Matthews I think would have been offer-sheeted, probably at 12+mil, and based on everyone's thoughts around him leaving, there is no doubt he signs it, and we are matching a higher salary then he is at now. Marner, he was never going to sign for less then 10mil, and I am sure he would have sat out, much like Nylander did.

It is unfortunate that these players are who they are, maybe it is possible we just got the wrong players. It appears to be evident, that as much as they want to win, they also want every cent they are entitled too. Not every star wins a SC unfortunately. We might just have those mix of stars right now.

It's amazing how often the dubas fan boys will tell us it's the players fault when the gm is literally responsible for said players being on the team.

I mean, if the players can't get it done, clearly the person in charge hasn't assembled the proper team.

Yet they just continue making excuses for dubas. I've never seen anything like thise before.
To admit Dubas is clueless, is to admit that fancy stats don't mean shit.

I am going to have to wash my mouth out with soap after this post, because anybody who knows me on here knows that I am probably the president of the “Fire Dubas” club on these boards and I hate defending him in any way. Lol.

But, I really cannot blame Dubas for that Kadri trade if I am being honest. At the time, it HAD to be done. Kadri was increasingly becoming a determent to the team with him coming off getting suspended in the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row. You can’t have a guy like that on your team, no matter how much heart and grit he has. Plus, didn’t he get suspended in the playoffs in Colorado as well the following year or the year after?

So, as much as I can’t stand Dubas and as bad as that return for Kadri in the trade was, this is one of the very few things that I can’t fault him for.

Lol. Inject this post into my veins after my most recent one. 😉😉😉😁😁😁😁😁
This is all horseshit. Kadri was the only man willing to do anything to standup for his teammates. Did he cross the line? Sure, but to be punished for it like he was and tossed out of town is ridiculous. Kadri bled blue and white, and was willing to take a bullet for this team to win. We were getting ragdolled in those series when he got suspended. No one else did a single f***ing thing. Kadri tried to protect his teammates, he crossed the line and got suspended. Our team was supposed to rally around that, not just fold like they always do. He got suspended, we continued getting dummied. Then Kadri was shipped out as if it was all his fault. What a pathetic f***ing team this really is. Our management is disgusting

My allegiance is cracking when it comes to marner. I never understood why everyone is so hell bent picking on Nylander, when marner shows the least heart out of the 4. Nylander still crashed the net a good 5 times before he pissed everyone off. Marner makes 2 blocks in 2017 on Pasta and suddenly nobody can question his work ethic in the playoffs even to this day because he hides behind his xGF.
Except he has been one of the core that has actually been noticeable in a positive way most games.

The Leafs play like they dont care. Marner is one of the only guys, noticeable, engaged and seems like he wants to make a difference. Matthews is not engaged this year, he is ripping shots from the blueline like he doesnt care, missing the net wildly etc...its kind of odd. Nylander didnt show up last night at all, invisible. Reilly has very average hockey sense, they need a defenseman better than him to move anywhere in the playoffs. Reilly is a 2-3 dman on a good team. They have one defenseman who can defend, Brodie who looks old this year, Giordano is on the decline, Holl is embarassing....Dubas did this.
Nylander totally cheated on defense last game. Hope it was just a bad game.

Most folks recognize that we need to rebalance the cap but many are too afraid to say we need to move one the the eight figure forwards to do that so they go to Nylander, who ironically is one of our best value contracts.

When we bought JT that meant unfortunately we couldn't keep all three of our new forward studs - but we did. Marners terrible contract unfortunately meant that it had to be Marner that went - but he didn't.

Similar to picking up Jarn on that deal. Not a bad piece of business with savings on Kerfoot - but Kerfoot stayed.

Too much wanting your cake and eating it too and not enough reality. Why would you trade one of the best wingers in the league? Because big mistakes were made.

Matthews terrible again tonight.

10 games in and we're still waiting for him to show up.

I think this is the key issue this year. Matthews has looked so bad this year. The other guys at least have been performing a bit

Kind of hard when the rest of the team needs to drag a slumping line that takes up 25% of the cap and 33% of the ice time.

This team doesn't go anywhere until they can start making skill plays again and their top line stops sucking.

The rest doesn't matter until that fixes itself.

Revisionist history.

Cap was always supposed to rise. The crunch only happened when it didn't (for reasons that were entirely unpredictable).

That said, I've always maintained we should have moved Marner. Can't pay that much for someone who can't drive their own line.

They kind of went from trying to develop a certain kind of program to idolizing the star power in house. We've built a real NBA culture of celebrity Leafs and a vast supporting cast of mercenaries.
