If we trade Matthews then we're rebuilding, the advantage of signing Tavares was to give us elite 1-2-3 centre depth with Matthews-Tavares-Kadri. We already traded Kadri in a disaster trade, if your leaving Tavares as #1, at 30 and after taking that horrific concussion, without Matthews the team will probably suck

Yup pretty much what I think. They gotta dump Marner and build around Matthews or do a complete rebuild. They just gotta get Matthews to agree to an extension before the last year of his current contract begins.
therein lies the problem

One of the most pointless threads on this board.

Trading Matthews is a non-starter unless he wants out. Even if the Leafs bottomed out again it would take an extreme amount of luck to find a player of his caliber again. Look at the 1st overall picks since 2016. Not one of them is even close to the level of player Matthews is.

We can trade anyone else but we aren’t trading him.
so you'd take the risk of losing him for nothing ?

Leafs fan. Matthews probably my favorite player on the planet, but fading. For the first time, I am 100% on the trade Matthews bandwagon -- I don't care how filthy his mitts are. This kid has flat-out changed and anyone who denies this just doesn't want to be honest about it.

He went from a young, passionate, confident kid who backchecked and hounded the opponent like a demon -- while buzzing and scoring goals -- to a nonchalant, ho-hum opportunist who seems to worry more about chasing Bieber and wearing kid's clothes.

What happened to this dude? It started with the strange mustache then the tats all over and now the dress code and "IDGAF" attitude.

He's blessed with great size, incredible scoring hands but just seems like he doesn't care much. Two awful playoffs, massive contract, and just appears to be extremely inconsistent, sometimes just has a "whatever" look to him.

If I'm the Leafs, I absolutely look to trade him now for a massive haul -- before he fades and threatens to leave for nothing down the line. I seriously question if he can handle the pressure in Toronto and is losing his fire for the game. He reminds me of Ricky Williams right before he just vanished.

Trade him to Arizona for a king's ransom...

Matthews for Crouse, Hayton, Chychrun and two 1sts.

you may have to reign in expectations a bit though . if you got chycrun and one high first you'd be close . chychrun is a young number one stud d on a sweet contract.

Yes. 5 games coming off wrist surgery is more than enough time to make that kind of judgment. We might have to pay to get rid of him now….
I mean the earlier you figure it out the easier it’ll be. But yes, I agree that Dubas will probably need a season or two before realizing what I have in 5 games.

Read the article that was made about his life. He's getting brainwashed by Justin Bieber, because Bieber is envious of him and wants to influence the Leafs. Matthews attitude changed completely since he became buddies with Bieber, he's no longer obsessed with hockey and is constantly looking for other things to get obsessed with like Tennis and Chess.

Reminds me a lot of Ricky Williams. He was a beast of a running back -- one of the absolute best in the NHL. He had a few monster years and looked like he was about to take the world by storm then started dressing and acting weird. Shortly after, he packed up and lived off the land and enjoyed weed -- right in his prime.

I'm definitely not saying Matthews will do this, but I've seen a huge change in him over the last few years and it's been a big transformation in terms of attitude, appearance, and work ethic. Even though the talent is still there (he won a Rocket last season), when it comes time to really knuckle down and up the intensity, like the playoffs, he just comes off as, "meh, whatever." All summer, all I saw online were pictures of him following Bieber everywhere and walking his puppy while wearing Disney character clothing and silly hats. This is not normal behavior for an elite, professional hockey player. Where were are the videos of him working on his game, getting in top shape, focusing on nutrition (like MacKinnon), etc.? They were nowhere to be found.

Then he decides to get wrist surgery late. No sure who's decision that was? And this year is just going through the motions like the Leafs didn't just get embarrassed the last two years in the playoffs.

I have no idea what happened to him. You may be right with the deeper Bieber stuff, but I honestly suspect that some "agency" or "celebrity handler" may gotten ahold of him -- maybe even introduced through Bieber -- and now he's more focused on being this cultural, fashion-focused celebrity than just focusing on hockey and helping the Leafs.

I hope I'm wrong but it doesn't look like it.

Last night against the Wings, he pulled an "Ovechkin disconnected controller" backcheck on a Wings goal. And I sure haven't seen THIS kid since before Babcock got fired. Look at his intensity, passion and fire on every play. Where did this go??

I see some logic to it since Matthews is the one you'd have zero issue trading even with that cap hit, and get back a valuable asset.

Arguably Nylander too.

Again, the issue is that the players you want to trade are the hardest ones to move, at decent value

I'm not convinced that the Leafs absolutely have to break up their big name core though. And of course it is early for that talk. Youd only consider it if there is more playoff failure.

How long do you wait for the other shoe to drop?

Yeah, the two firsts and three seconds Chycrun, Crouse and Hayton. The extras are worth mentioning.
Lol Arizona says no to your dogshit proposal.

Mickey Mou…I mean Matthews is a one dimensional, lackadaisical player, at least as of late. A first, crouse, and a 2nd and he’s yours. That’s about the return he’s going to get.

You don't mean that. You are just lying. Besides, that wasn't my proposal dog shit or otherwise. Those were the extras to an earlier dog shit proposal.
