Everyone has missed this going on about Cap Hell, but Leafs are set-up really nice to have 50+ in cap available within 2 years. i think They keep Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

You may want to mention that they only have 3 forwards, 1 defenceman, and 0 goalies signed at that time, it provides some extra context.

So a full rebuild is what you are saying with Matthews signing on long-term with almost no known teammates.

Leafs have painted themselves into a dead end of aging players and expiring contracts corresponding with Matthews contract ending.

That's much better than being locked into many contracts you'd rather dump.

I'm sure they will have more contracts on the books by then.

He certainly appears to have set up home base in Scottsdale Arizona with his $3.2 mil mansion, where he lives in luxury in the off-season, close to friends and family where he grew up.

Although Phoenix and Scottsdale share a border that's more than 10 miles long, their downtowns are about 12 miles apart – a drive of 20-30 minutes.

24 min (12.2 mi) via Loop W from Scottsdale to Phoenix to Tempe.

So to answer to your question it would be about a 20-30 minute commute to work once the new Arena is built if playing for his favourite and home team growing up.

On July 1st, 2025 Auston Matthews signs a team friendly 7 year deal with the Phoenix Coyotes and fulfills his childhood dream.

You're supposed to put realistic things on a dream board.

don't think Pastrnak is a direct comparable to Nylander; same with Aho. Nylander at least at the moment is playing behind Matthews/Marner; both Pastrnak and Aho are the first line offense for their respective teams.

Nylander could potentially argue that if he played with Matthews and/or Marner he would put up similar numbers. I guess it might depend on how Willy's seaosns go this year and next year. Because if he keeps producing like he did last season Willy is probably going to be around 9.5 to 10.5 AAV starting point....

There’s not a great argument for Nylander making $10.5 million. He could ask for it but he would have to leave this team and try to find that in a flat cap landscape.

Now we don't know what Matthews plans are and all of Leaf Nation is holding their collective breaths in hopes he stays ..however just to play this out as WHAT IF using the evidence

Matthews 7x year hometown friendly deal could be half over by the time the arena is built and the team is out of its rebuilding phase. He’s going to spend the prime, prime years of his career for a set up that won’t materialize until he’s 30?

Of course, but IMO there are too many times where someone posts the boatloads of cap space they will have at some point in the future while neglecting to account for number of signings that need to be made with said funds.

$50 million gets chewed up pretty quickly when you need to sign 17-18 players (including 34 & 88)

If they are in the cap hell everyone claims, shouldn't they not have this money available?

What would indicate Matthews is remotely interested in giving any team a discount? Let alone one that doesn't have an NHL caliber arena, and may not even be able to close the deal on one? The local city council has only agreed to negotiate with the Coyotes,.they're not close to a deal yet. And then you actually have to build the facility which will likely take additional years....

No team is in cap hell when they only have 4 contracts on the books.
It's just interesting that is now spun into a negative after the cap hell stuff for years. Now having not enough players sign and a ton of cap is an issue...

Yeah but we have great computer generated pics of that arena to show!
It's pretty funny they signed to play 3 years in a university arena with no arena deal in place. At this point it's a virtual guarentee a 4th year will be added even if it's aprroved.

That is the Arizona dream that they build a $1.7 bil new Arena and "If they build it they will come". They being the fans and what better way to fill a new building then bring home the NHL's best goal scorer and local kid that grew up in Arizona a Coyotes fan and save the franchise and pack the building to the rafters.

I probably have the odds at 80% Matthews stays with the Leafs and in that 20% that he might leave (Being American and wanting to return to his own country).. I would put LA Kings, Anaheim Ducks and Vegas as the top 3 with SJ as a 4th dark horse, He is born in California, and his home is $3.2 mil mansion is in Scottsdale where he spends his off season.. Its only a 5 hour drive from his home to LA or Vegas. So he could be closer to family and friends and his hometown where he grew up as a West Coast USA born kid.

Yes, as of today they will have around $50M in cap space in 2 years, they will need to sign around 17 more players including 34 & 88 with that money.

I can't help it if you interpret facts as being negative.

All NHL contracts are in US dollars..

However here is the scary part when you use the Ontario Income tax calculator.

When you insert the gross earnings in CDN$ after conversion.,

Estimated taxes owed $7,525,893

PS. Excludes RRSP and other tax deductible earnings.,

An $11 mil US salary with a 1.28 tax exchange rate = $6.6 mil CD$ after tax take home income using the Ontario Federal and Provincial income tax charts from tax year 2021.

This is the chalenge Canadian based teams face keeping their stars north of the USA border, particularly those American born players.
He gets his bonus paid in July, in AZ. The annual base salary is 750 - 800 k

And this is super relevant, because as we all know, players have tons of time mid-season to take 10 hour road trips.
Family take the trips.

Since July 1st, 2019 Leafs have paid Matthews 49 million each Canada day combined on his new deal. He will be expecting huge bonus structure once again. many of the teams often mentioned don't pay bonuses or very little.
Matthews is making a killing in Toronto.

Family take the trips.

Matthews, who was born in San Ramon, California, and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona.. He clearly still call Scottsdale home because that is were he bought his house and spends in offseason and free time when not working in Canada.

His mom's side is from Hermosillo, Mexica. It's about six hours south of Phoenix. "My mom's side is a big family, lots of brothers and sisters, so usually when we go to the city and one of them lives there, they like to come to the game and grab dinner or just catch up after the game." "Most of them actually live in the (United) States now, whether it's Arizona or Colorado or California. They've gotten to know hockey quite a bit. They usually make the trip up to Phoenix for the game when we're in town, so they like to watch then.

If Matthews does leave because he wants to return home to his own country then the West coast of the USA would be the logical choice, and he would do it to move closer the family and friends. IMO

All Leaf fans are hoping that he spends his entire career in Toronto, but we will have to wait and see what happens as his contract ends in 2 years and until re-signed there will be questions and doubts,

Tavares needs a bus ticket out of town. The dead puck era is over and hockey has passed him by.

LOL. Ridiculous.

Teams that John Tavares would STILL be a #1 Centre on......

Anaheim
Arizona
Boston
Buffalo
Chicago
Columbus
Dallas
Detroit
LA
Minnesota
Montreal
Nashville
NJD
NYI
Ottawa
Philly
San Jose
Seattle
St. Louis (this one is maybe debatable)
Vegas
Winnipeg

But everything is amazing!

Auston Matthews is trending as Coyotes plan to bring him home to Arizona

Can you imagine if they pull this off?!

This came out earlier this week: the Arizona Coyotes have reportedly a plan set in place to bring hometown superstar Auston Matthews to their roster.

Alright, laugh it off. But check this out. The Coyotes are believed to be putting in place a plan in order to have all of the money available to bring Matthews back home to Arizona and get him to lead a young crew of players in the desert.

Using the several picks acquired for the upcoming draft, the Coyotes also look to rebuild to get together a good team with young talents in their system in order to make room for as much space as possible under the salary cap in 2024 to sign Matthews. You know how the Coyotes were busy sellers this offseason. Ever since the end of the 2021 regular season, the Yotes have acquired several draft picks by trading away Conor Garland, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Darcy Kuemper, Christian Dvorak, amongst others.

According to several observers, including Steve Kournianos of The Draft Analyst, Arizona has already started to pave the way to afford superstar Matthews in 2024.

The Coyotes seem to be genuinely prepared to offer him the biggest contract in NHL history.

Ready by 2024? That will be the fastest arena build in modern history.
