Sure 15 x 8
Well that’s an opinion. I will give you that
Sure 15 x 8
Yes they asked him to move at the trade deadline and he refused. They then didn’t re sign him so he sat out for a while contemplating retiring. He decided he still wanted to play a little bit. I’m sure the Sedin’s probably influenced him a bit.The Leafs didn't want him back? I didn't remember that but I honestly think maybe I wasn't following the league that closely at the time.
I was aware that he refused the trade but I wasn't aware that they didn't try to sign him back. I was under the impression he chose Vancouver after feeling wanted by them and not so wanted by the Leafs.Yes they asked him to move at the trade deadline and he refused. Matthews was and currently is much, much, much closer to McDavid than Eichel. You are correct though that McDavid is on a phenomenal contract compared to the history of post-ELC contracts. Arguably the best ever if one chooses to ignore more accurate measures and look only at raw points.Matthews was and currently is inbetween McDavid and Eichel. Edmonton got McDavid an a phenomenal contract.
that's close ... mats did not waive, he had a verbal agreement with fletcher to continue on 1 yr contracts... burke came in as gm and said he wanted a 2 yr deal to commit any coin to sundin . they met to discuss and burke said the offer was no longer on the table, that the leafs were going to go in a different direction ... mats never left the leafs, they left him ....I was aware that he refused the trade but I wasn't aware that they didn't try to sign him back. I was under the impression he chose Vancouver after feeling wanted by them and not so wanted by the Leafs.
Whatever leverage he would create in a bidding war still wouldn’t be close to the amount of guaranteed money he’d get for the 8th year he would get from the leafs or a team he would agree to waive to and sign. It makes total sense to waive to a team he would sign withGive up a huge return for a month or so of hockey? I'd be really pissed at them (and would just block it with NMC). That will have a huge effect on their ability to keep a competitive team around him. It's not about screwing the Leafs out of spite, it's about what is best for Matthews and his new team. Beside becoming a free agent gives him more leverage than going to his supposed new team, nothing like a bidding war with one of the games 2 best players available for the taking.
I personally think he signs back in Toronto. But if he's jumping ship, he'd be wise to not let his new team sell the farm for him. It makes little sense.
Not true. His cap hit for each remaining year is $11,000,000. His salary for the 2022-23 season is $7,950,000, made up of a $7,040,000 signing bonus and $910,000 in base salary.Tavares has a FULL no movement clause, meaning he decides where he goes if he goes and considering he asked for it, i doubt he waives. Also theres no point buying him out. His cap hit for those remaining years is actually minimal because it's heavily loaded in bonus (approx 10,3Mill per year cap hit).
My recollection is that he refused a trade, and retired after the end of the season. Part way through the next season he came out of retirement to join Vancouver.I was aware that he refused the trade but I wasn't aware that they didn't try to sign him back. I was under the impression he chose Vancouver after feeling wanted by them and not so wanted by the Leafs.
That's an NBA thing. When do NHL players do that?Matthews might want to pull a Kawhi Leonard anyway, and win a championship even though he has no intention of staying. I can't see either the Leafs or Matthews wanting Matthews to get moved at the TDL if he thinks he has a shot at the Cup.
If they don't sign him prior to the NMC, they're making a huge mistake IMO. He must sign by then or be traded by then.
He was doing the bonus' in avg.Not true. His cap hit for each remaining year is $11,000,000. His salary for the 2022-23 season is $7,950,000, made up of a $7,040,000 signing bonus and $910,000 in base salary.
Hossa did it 3 years ina row, taking 1 year deals, trying to win a championship, instead of taking an 8 year deal. That's an NBA thing. When do NHL players do that?
He was doing the bonus' in avg.
That has nothing to do with it.He was doing the bonus' in avg.
Correct. One person.Hossa did it 3 years ina row, taking 1 year deals, trying to win a championship, instead of taking an 8 year deal.
One example plus the others. Nice backtrack.Correct. One person.
A reasonable prediction?
I could see Matthews signing another 5 year contract. It's actually quite smart. First couple of years, large signing bonuses, get the money working for you. By the time he's...30? He's got an opportunity to use examples like Ovechkin to either push another lucrative 5 year deal, or finally leverage that coveted 8 year deal for all it's worth.
I could see Matthews getting best of both worlds. Another 5 years in Toronto. Then a "Coming Home" contract in the 8 year range at a maximum hit. His agent is going to be able to point to his recent past and Matthews' singular comparison (ie Ovechkin) and justify one monster of a contract.
Arizona's arena (complex?) will be ready by the end of a second five year contract (if all things come together) and he would have given his best years to Toronto.
As a Leafs fan that's the second most ethical outcome possible. Retiring a Leaf would be nice, but...that might be too much ask in this era.
Matthews is unlikely to get 15m or take a 3 year deal, and also, 17.75% isn't the highest cap hit percentage in the history of the NHL.3 years @ $15 mil = 17.75 C.H.% the highest in the history of the NHL
yup...a piece of paper should be put in front of him and he should be asked how much he wants. This should be done next spring and if he hesitates (since its basically a blank check) to put a number down...he is going to pull a JT and leave us hanging. He has to be traded..I don't care what the return is because it will still be more than ZERO if he walks as a UFA. I worry that Karma is going to come bite us in the ass for the whole JT experience we had. Someone burn some sage or something...please.Matthews might want to pull a Kawhi Leonard anyway, and win a championship even though he has no intention of staying. I can't see either the Leafs or Matthews wanting Matthews to get moved at the TDL if he thinks he has a shot at the Cup.
