Auston Matthews is trending as Coyotes plan to bring him home to Arizona

Can you imagine if they pull this off?!

View attachment 574702

This came out earlier this week: the Arizona Coyotes have reportedly a plan set in place to bring hometown superstar Auston Matthews to their roster.

Alright, laugh it off. But check this out. The Coyotes are believed to be putting in place a plan in order to have all of the money available to bring Matthews back home to Arizona and get him to lead a young crew of players in the desert.

Using the several picks acquired for the upcoming draft, the Coyotes also look to rebuild to get together a good team with young talents in their system in order to make room for as much space as possible under the salary cap in 2024 to sign Matthews. You know how the Coyotes were busy sellers this offseason. Ever since the end of the 2021 regular season, the Yotes have acquired several draft picks by trading away Conor Garland, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Darcy Kuemper, Christian Dvorak, amongst others.

According to several observers, including Steve Kournianos of The Draft Analyst, Arizona has already started to pave the way to afford superstar Matthews in 2024.

The Coyotes seem to be genuinely prepared to offer him the biggest contract in NHL history.

Seems like a long shot to expect a franchise with no talent, no budget and no building to offer up the biggest contract (which they can’t), and a brand new building with a credible chance of winning in 24 months time.

Build it all you want. He’s not coming.

I'd worry about the drywall in that place if it's ready by October, 2024 and no schedule to actually start the build.

Yes, I'm sure Arizona is dumping players and cutting costs to set up a max contract for Matthews in 2 years, and not because they're a consistently horrible franchise in a tailspin and perpetual rebuild that's bleeding money and had to resort to playing in a 5,000 seat University arena for at least the next 3 years.

Not only would those picks likely not be impactful to the NHL team by the time Matthews' contract is up, dumping any positive part of your team to accumulate picks is the easy part. Doing something with those picks is the hard part, and that's the part that Arizona has struggled with for their entire existence. Maybe they'll try to cheat at the draft again?

Imagine thinking you're going to build a 2 billion dollar arena complex that's not even approved yet within 2 years.

What that twitter guy doesn't get is the Leafs have done the same.. Look at our contracts we have like, 2 or 3 that aren't league min deals when he is a UFA? Also why would Auston leave a team with no playoff success for another young team that is all potential and is a few years away from truly contending, IF the salary cap doesn't break it apart.

Not sure it will be about the money this time for him. I think it will be a massive deal but he won't force a team to sign him to league max. He'll pick where he thinks he can win in the next few years and sign a reasonable but top end of the league cap hit. Hopefully Dubas can convince him he can win here.

It’ll be interesting to see where AM34 goes, but I still think Vegas is the perfect fit for him. It’s close to his roots, it’s a terrific market, and the weather is good. Hopefully McCrimmon doesn’t completely screw up that franchise and set it back 10 yrs.
If he does, the other logical markets are Detroit, Boston and NYR. I think he liked Chicago, but that’s probably a long shot.

That team is going to be so bad within 2 years. None of this matters apparently with non Toronto markets. I see teams listed all the time that don't even look like playoff teams. But he'll want out for not "Winning a round" and making the playoffs yearly...

At this point when Matthews contract expires in summer 2024 the Leafs will only have 4 players under contract Marner and Tavares (both of whom expire in 2025) Calle Jarnkrok and Morgan Rielly.

What will the Leafs roster look like when its time to re-sign Auston and how will they sell Cup competitiveness with no players signed?

The defense will be in shambles as Gio will be 41, Muzzin and Brodie contracts both end but they will be in the age 35 range and they still might not have a #1 goalie. Liljegren the only player in RFA status with everbody else a UFA.

When Leafs go to re-sign Matthews the roster will look like this (via Cap friendly)

XXXXX ---- XXXXX ---- Marner
XXXXX---- Tavares ---- XXXXX
XXXXX --- Jarnkrok --- XXXXX
XXXXX --- XXXXX ----- XXXXX

Rielly ----- XXXXX
XXXXX --- XXXXX
XXXXX --- Liljegren RFA?

At this point when Matthews contract expires in summer 2024 the Leafs will only have 4 players under contract Marner and Tavares (both of whom expire in 2025) Calle Jarnkrok and Morgan Rielly. What will the Leafs roster look like when its time to re-sign Auston and how will they sell Cup competitiveness with no players signed?
Didn't you just make a post about how Arizona having no players signed for that offseason was actually a genius strategic decision that would assist their theoretical pursuit of Matthews? And now you're arguing the exact opposite for Toronto? How is Arizona going to sell "cup competitiveness" with both no players signed and no recent success of any kind to speak of?
The defense will be in shambles as Gio will be 41, Muzzin and Brodie contracts both end but they will be in the age 35 range and they still might not have a #1 goalie. Liljegren the only player in RFA status with everbody else a UFA.
Even under the assumption that both Muzzin and Brodie do not re-sign, and we don't sign anybody else over the next 2 years, and none of our promising prospects make the jump, we'd still have Rielly signed, and Liljegren and Sandin in team control years.

We've gone full circle from too much money on players and "Cap Hell" to "Cap Hell" due to no players signed.
Can Leafs ever do anything right?
As word spreads about all the cap available the narrative swings wildly!
It isnt that too much cap is the problem.. it will just be more of the same

Matthews/nylander/liljegren/sandin at that point.. what 30 million?
Tavares/marner/jarnkrok/reilly 31.5
Guess at the cap being neutral 84.5 last year affected by paying owners back

So potentially 23 million to sign
7 forwards
3 defence
2 goalies

Nevermind if any current players are kept.. but probably not
Bunting ?
Engvall ?
Robertson - rfa that summer
Muzzin/brodie re sign
Goalies

Probably more churn hoping to strike lightning

Don't be in cap hell or have too much cap. Both are terrible.
They will always spend to the cap, it’s how they use it. Saying they have a ton of it down the road is meaningless IMO.

Don't be in cap hell or have too much cap. Both are terrible.

Exactly same problem !!! (now re-sign Matthews and Nylander) the topic of this thread.

Today : AM + JT + MM + WN = $40.5 mil AAV of $82.5 mil Max cap [49% C.H.%] = Cap Hell for 4 forwards today

in 2 years

Re-sign Matthews for ~ $15 mil & Nylander for ~ $9 mil + JT + MM (both still under contract) =$45.9 mil of $84.5 mil Max Cap [54.3% C.H.%] = even worst Cap Hell for 4 forwards.

So Leafs core 4 forwards in 2024-25 season will consume +5% more C.H,% then today and have only those 4 players + Jarnkrok and Rielly as the only 6 players under contract. [$55.5 mil cap consumption]

Free cap space [$84,500,000 max - $55,500,000] = $29 mil FREE to sign 7 forwards + 5 Dmen + 2 goalies + 1 spare (15 players) = [Ave cost per player = $1.93 mil]

Once Matthews and Nylander are re-signed the Leafs cap situation will get worse because the core 4 will consume even more than they do now.

The chance of Arizona having a fully completed and ready to play in arena by 2024 is probably close to 0%. They'll be lucky to secure a deal with the city by the end of the fall, let alone break ground anytime soon. A 20k person arena can't just materialize out of thin air lol

XXXXX --- XXXXX ----- XXXXX

Rielly ----- XXXXX
XXXXX --- XXXXX
XXXXX --- Liljegren RFA?

XXXXX
XXXXX

But it won't be like that....

Id the team literally has only 4 players under contract it would be literally unprecedented for anything other than expansion team to be on that position

With little cap or tons of cap Leafs are doomed! Everyone else is fine though.

Dubas should have signed Matthews to the 8 year contract and never touched Tavares. Sure Matthews didn't really deserve such a deal when he hadn't even hit 70 points yet, but if I was going to bet on someone he'd have been it. The talent was obvious.

Cap Hell for 4 forwards today
Paying players what they're worth and being one of the best teams in the league isn't "cap hell".
Once Matthews and Nylander are re-signed the Leafs cap situation will get worse because the core 4 will consume even more than they do now.
Even with your likely inaccurate estimations of the cap hits, it still wouldn't be the same situation, since the cap will be rising again throughout their UFA contracts. Not to mention that Tavares' contract will be ending the next year and he'd be looking at a significant decline in his cap hit.
