I have to say this is very bizarre. Surely this contract was offered earlier in the year, right?

So is it perhaps that Stamkos did not get significantly higher dollar value offers from teams that he would actually be interested in playing for?

That's the only conclusion that makes sense, right? Or am I missing something?

Didn't want it to happen but am more shocked he actually took only 8.5. It's gonna hurt a bit but we might be able to move a few pieces and keep the majority together, not sure who that is right now though.

No fun.

I still think New Jersey would've been better.

Tampa now has almost now money to sign all their players.

Incoming Drouin trade request again

8.5 is a good price, considering the speculation. Should be interesting to watch how this impacts signing everybody else this summer and next, but they're not in bad shape.

I had been hoping to see him hit July 1st just to have a more interesting free agency period, but I am happy for Tampa. Though, I suppose a trade is still possible. ;)

He's set the market low for everyone else it seems. I also wonder if guys like Ladd and Backes have to suck it up and take w/e term is given if they want 6 million a year.

Wow. I'm shocked it's only 8.5 million. I wouldn't have thought he he'd sign for anything less than 10.

Awesome. What a great deal. Yzerman is a genuis.

True, Stammer is worth more NOW but not the last 3 years of the deal he aint. It works out to the right amount.

Kudos to Stammer for bending over slightly to remain with his team. I have a LOT more respect for him.

What an odd way to put it. More or less he put the team above himself so they could stay competitive. He has always been a class act.

Would have loved to see him in Toronto but never thought it was realistic for a player of his caliber to rot on a basement dwelling team during his prime years. He wants the cup too badly and Tampa will continually to compete for it.

The nicest part about Stamkos re-signing is all of the Leafs fans who insisted he wasn't re-signing in Tampa and was going to Toronto now get to eat crow.

A lot of Leaf fans didn't want him, and what about the Tampa fans that were calling Stamkos ****?

Lots of crow for everybody, not just Toronto.

People are saying that he took a hometown discount. And while that might seem like the case on the surface, remember that Florida does not have a state or local income tax.

So he's basically making an extra 425,000 per year on top of his AAV of 8,500,000.

Why did he even agreed to meet with the leafs if he was gonna accept this low offer. I assume the leafs probably offered him less dollars.

Nice fair contract for TB. I'm surprised. Though he was for sure going to FA. What took so long for TB to offer this deal, or why did it take Stamkos so long to accept?

I believe he talked to other teams and clearly the market like Seth Jones proved isn't what the media says it is. People saying Seth Jones was getting 7 million and crazy stuff like that.

Stamkos was supposed to get 9-12 million....well 8.5 is well below what anyone said it would be.

Reading through those Stammergeddon threads on the Tampa board suggested he was declining, inconsistent, liability defensively, one trick pony, tunnel vision, etc.

Now all of a sudden it's "wow" stammer is amazing omg
