Will the smile on my face ever go away after this signing was made official? Of course Sunday night I had a dream about his debut game, FYI he will assist on the GWG but I cannot remember who scored. :)

At the end of the day, the C or A is really just a letter on a sweater, they're all leaders in their own right. I think it's a little bit old school to think that there's one guy in the room above all else who can lead them the best.

They should troll the media and give it to Matt Martin or McElhinney just for poops and giggles.

However, I guess since it's still considered an "honor", Tavares should get it because of his age and history as a captain. I'm sure Matthews won't mind one bit.

obligatory eye roll...

why is there an eye roll.
Iginla wanted to be the captain. they gave it to Conroy instead.
then Iginla got to be captain anyway. do you remember hearing any drama how Iginla wanted to be captain and they didn't give it to him, oh noes? No. Why would it be here?

It's only drama if Matthews makes it drama, and quite frankly if he makes it drama then he's not ready to be captain anyway, so again. it's not an issue. Tavares is here. he's used to being captain. give it to him. let matthews develop in peace, when it's time to be all time for Matthews to be captain (should he want it) give it to him

Why do you assume that because the Iginla situation ended up okay that this is the blueprint to follow? are all stars cut out from the same cloth and possess the same motivations? Ridiculous.

I think Matthews wants to be captain and he will be disappointed if it went to Tavares who hasn't played any role in turning the franchise around.

The big question is, can Matthews ask for over 11 million on his next contract now?

Or has Dubas set a nice upper limit on what the big 3 can be paid.

In terms of the money side of it. I could see Matthews setting down at a matching 11 million figure and that UFA deal for Tavares functioning as the ceiling for the time being. Then by the end of the deal Tavares' deal is expired and Matthews can get a pay bump going into his UFA years. But who knows. That'll get figured out.

With the Captain situation, I trust with Dubas that nothing will be rushed either way. Take the time to see how the team looks and if someone actually emerges from the group as the clear captain. No reason to just arbitrarily throw that onto anyone if it's not based in the reality of the room. So no don't buy the theory that he gets it at the start of camp or even at the start of the season. Throw some "A"s on various jerseys of guys who are showing themselves to be leaders in the room and that's fine.

Don't want to bother thinking too much on things that don't matter as much like the Captain. What Tavares will add, how fun it could be seeing him play with the great wingers we've got on this team, the hype for the start of the season, etc. That's the stuff I'm more interested in right now. Definitely makes this one of the more talented Leafs team I've seen in my lifetime. Have had some good ones over the past few decades sure, but this group is scary. Tavares just adds a "watch out" feeling to this group.

i'm not. that's the one i know. and the guy who wanted to be captain, ended up being captain.
do you know examples where it wasn't? Legitimately? because I don't.
if several people want to be captain (are you gonna tell me you don't think Marner doesn't dream about being the captain he's not going to be disappointed either?) you're going to have to deal with whomever gets it.

I personally wouldn't give Matthews the captaincy now. it doesn't matter if he wants it, let him just cultivate his game having as many shields as he has (and he now has a big 11m right in front of him) and get better. once he's there, then if he wants it. he can have it. again. I repeat. It's not a big deal.

I will also. repeat, again, that I think this entire conversation is moot - because I don't think they are going to be naming anyone a captain this season anyway.

These quotes from fans says it all.

~“I don’t want anyone on this hockey club who doesn’t want to play for the Islanders.”
~“With an attitude like that, this will end up being addition by subtraction for the Islanders. The Isles need a winning culture — with a leader who’s about nothing else. Tavares is clearly not that guy.”
~Snowbird Marvin Resnick, who alternates between homes in Florida and Long Island, read Tavares’ message to Isles rooters, where he talked about the “love and support of the fan base.” Resnick, a former Rangers publicist, wouldn’t buy it.
“Tavares deceived the Islanders,” Resnick told me, “and their great fans.”

In actuality Isles fans. Tavares led the Islanders to nothing but years of losing. Perhaps he leaving was a blessing in disguise. I don't 100% buy the he had no team around him. Great players lift teams. JT is not a great player. Karlsson in similar circumstances was, lifting the Sens to 1 game of the cup finals. VGK last year under Fleury were able to get to the cup finals. JT is not the winner some people think he is. I think the hockey world will soon find out. He is a player that needs help. Not a player that can carry a team to a championship. And this is going to be the highest paid player next season. Isles may have lucked out. Ironic Dumbas may have saved Lamoriello from himself.

lol.

Can somebody guess the poster?

yup. like leo's + bozak's gone so that's like what?
an A to John and an A for Matty (i'd imagine unless we get someone else super older/vet-esque) coming in.

and this is just something keeps blowing my mind. like i can't even remember a Leafs team this stacked up front. it is incredibly amazingly awesome to think about .

I would say the drama will/would be fabricated by the media.
They will post a picture of Matthews when he's not smiling and the headlines will say "Tavares getting the C puts a rift between Matthews and the leafs"

My thoughts too, but so many people seemed to be penciling in Matthews at like 11.5 after cap rises etc.

Dubas is trying to create an artificial Cap and some inner peer pressure for Matthews. Ideally, it will be a Kane/Toews type of situation that will allow them to add (or keep) pieces around them for an extended window and run at the cup. The only complication I can foresee is if Marner wants the same contract. To combat this Dubas will have to draft well so that the farm system allows them to replace skill with equal CHEAPER skill on a regular basis.

It's funny how these dramatic scenarios seem to only be the machinations of the media and certain hfboards posters.

So JT took his individual accomplishments and years of leading the losing and left for home. You think Isles fans would be starting a "Thank you Johnny" thread rather than a "I hate Tavares" thread. It may turn out to be the best thing for their franchise as they will suck next year and may win the "Lose for Hughes" derby.
