I hate this...

He needs to win over the dressing room before you slap a C on anyone's chest

or..
you could just name him captain?
this isn't a Dion Phaneuf where he was never meant to be captain.

but i don't think it's a biggie anyway coz i still feel they aren't gonna name a captain next year.

Gotta love how everybody completely have forgotten that Nylander has performed about the same level as Marner, sometimes better (first half of last season) sometimes worse (last playoffs). If Marner ask for too much money we sign him, trade him for the best we can afford and be happy with Nylander. Signing Nylander to a good contract this year will probably limit what Marner can ask for.

Hopefully Marner is a Leaf for life. Nylander too. If something were to change this, we do the best of the situation.

Hey everyone! Day 3 with JT on the Leafs! I don't think this feeling will ever go away

Anyway, I wanted to ask regarding his contract, I can see that pretty much all of it is just signing bonuses. What are the advantages to the Leafs based on how his contract is structured for the next 7 years, and why do you feel it was structured this way?

It's as if Kypreos doesn't listen to the news and he just operates off the cuff.
He did the same by questioning whether Lou would sign and trade after it was explicitly clear Lou wouldn’t do that. Kyle also made it clear that they are going to let it play out to see whether there is a clear captain favorite that has grown from the dressing room organically.

there is a lock out coming, he gets paid the bonus no matter what.

during lock outs salary is not paid , bonuses have to be paid.

His bonus drops down to something like 8 million in the last few years, if the wheels fall off we can trade him to another team with deep pockets in 5 years after paying out.

Contract is buyout and lockout proof with the bulk of his money coming July 1st every year, appeals to him.

I also once read that bonus payments are taxed at a lesser rate in Ontario (so still f*** high of course) than general salary, also good.

Hall, MacKinnon and Gaudreau would all be considered to be on great deals now. Marner would see himself as an elite player like them, getting 8 per wouldn't be out of the question.

IMO, Pasternak and Ehlers are good players no doubt but not in that bracket.

Okay so I get it you're a homer supreme.

Well fortunately Dubas, Pridham and co. won't be overlooking what the market dictated for players in a similar bracket playing the wing.

They'll name a captain and yes it does matter. The dynamic in the dressing room is paramount right now.

I don’t know if this has been said, but I believe he wanted to be a Leaf all along. I believe the only reason he interviewed with the other 4-5 teams was to get a “higher offer” ($13 million from SJ) to demonstrate publicly that he could have gotten more elsewhere, and is taking less than market value. In a cap world, it’s always great optics to show that you left money on the table.

Long story short, I believe he wanted to sign with us all along. Maybe now the younger fans here will realize that Toronto has been an attractive place for UFAs in the past (and wasn’t always the hellhole Brian Burke made it out to be), and has become an attractive place again.

When Babs came here, I recall him stressing this idea of making Toronto a "safe place" for the players. Everything he and Shanny have done since have had that in mind, now it's paying dividends. Can't believe the players we have, and the brain trust behind it. This organization is the envy of the league...who ever thought a Leafs fan could say that and it at least be a plausible assertion?

We've gone from the Laffs to the most coveted team in the league, while 3/4 of our biggest rivals are dumpster fires. Tides have turned, bitches!!!!

naming John Tavares captain is not gonna ruin any dynamic.
but it doesn't matter because i doubt they're going to name anyone next season.
again I think for the most part, Babcock is the captain (though he's no longer the highest paid person in that room).

If Matthews wants to be captain is there no problem there?

I would imagine the young players will expect it and welcome it.
