Can't see Marner asking for Matthews or McDavid money - more like a deal similar to what Pastrnak got in BOS (6x6.6) but slightly more with the adjusted cap.

no I don't think he is going to ask for that but a big season could put him at that point, 6x$6.6 if he puts up 80-90 points this year with JT? im not sure about that. I hope we can keep him under Draisaitl.

That's irrelevant . Players are paid what the market dictates.

So how is Marner north of what Gaudreau, Elhers, Pasternak, MacKinnon, Hall? Those are the contracts that make sense to compare to Marner. And to be honest, this is where the argument over numbers begins and end. If Marner gets north of 7m its a bad deal.

Keep in mind he can also make money on endorsement deals but his salary can't be north of 7, sorry...

IMO he's better than Eichel.. Eichel might be more valuable because he's a center though.

& to be honest, I don't think Marner will ask for 10. I could see him asking for 8 million though. I think much like Tavares, the hometown discount will play a factor. I also believe that Tavares signing for 11 was so beneficial. Because everyone will fall in line behind that.

Nylander I think will get around 5.5/6. Marner somewhere 7-8 mill.

Eichel at the time was also their franchise player (I think Dahlin will overtake him). We have 2 better players than marner now, I don't think he does ask for $10 but its possible. Nylander is not ~$2M less than Marner

there is a price tag where marner isn't worth keeping. If he wants the eichel contract then move on him, I get it the GTA boy the local hero but we cant be making decisions like that. Marner at $10M+ is not an untouchable, where as Matthews or Tavares at that cost are definitely untouchable (obviously JT is untouchable but just making the point those 2 are).

I keep all 3 for sure, and if im desperate for a dman and need to trade one I don't do it until I know what marner is asking for

There's a difference between Marner wanting 10M as an RFA, and getting 10M. Now that we have Tavares, i would bet that we will get Marner for a respectable cap hit unless he goes insane next year with Tavares, where paying him 10M would actually be warranted.

Nylander is the trade bait of anybody because he's too expensive to center a 3rd line and we have Kadri. Unless we are doing Marner + for a better player, he's probably here for the long haul

Nylander and Marner should both get less than 7M currently. They aren't UFA's and they've both had their downsides.

that's what i've been saying.
I don't see now how any of the three can go "pay me up" when everyone else who is key to this team - has taken less.

Tavares took a hell of a lot less.
Kadri is at 4.5
Mo is too (or just a tick more).

i also get inflation and i'm prepared for that, but i think honestly, i'd offer, Matthews 10 (same as Eichel, if he wants the .5, give him the .5), and then you give Marner + Will 6.5-7. (I don't know where all this eight++ is coming from).

people are treating UFA prices as if it matters for RFA's

Pastrnak and Ehlers should be the comparisons with some inflation. Pastrnak is better than both, and Ehlers is probably the bottom line. 6.5-7 is sensible.

Even if warranted we can not afford Marner (or any forward) at $10M+ we just cant have 3 forwards taking over $30M in cap space. Moot point because I agree I don't think he asks for $10m

There is absolutely NO way Marner asks for 10m coming off his rookie deal. No GM in the world does that unless he wins the Hart, Art Ross, Lester and the Conn Smythe next year.

I hate this...

He needs to win over the dressing room before you slap a C on anyone's chest

nothing to hate. Kyrpeos has been wrong every time he opens his mouth for the last 2 years, this is Kypreos putting 2+2 together and getting 6, (which it wouldn't surprise me if he actually got 2+2 wrong).
Friedman shuts him down so often its become a joke

If Marner is ever worth 10M and gets paid it than he is probably being traded for a 1D. So i'm not too worried. I'm sure management is all about balancing the numbers and knows what they need to hit salary wise to keep these guys.

I hope Marleau is prepared for his year 3 demise or random illness.

If i had to trade one guy, only Nylander makes sense out of anyone up front. Too expensive for a 3rd line role, and Marner is a natural winger. I would keep him for next season though and just see how it all plays out since we're going to look a bit different and potentially be better.

Dermott coming up full time with some experience and any other potential surprises, losing Bozak and JVR will probably be a net positive for our defensive game.

I'm not sure if you guys have seen this given that Ben is a Sens fan, but he is a funny dude and he gave his take on Tavares to the Leafs.

yep exactly what I was saying. To me if there is a point where signing him is too expensive then he is not a untouchable, Matthews almost gets a blank check to me that says untouchable not to mention he is a franchise 1C also. I also agree keep nylander next season and wait until you see what marner does, because if he wants the moon the leafs can say "ok we are happy running Nylander out there and we will move you" it gives them some leverage.

Again I state this is all hypothetical scenario, I don't think Marner asks for the moon.

The salt two days later is flowing heavy enough to let my great aunt make enough salt beef to last a hundred winters.

First of all, us - Were gonna sign Marner for 8.5, bridge Willy at less than 5 and give Matthews 11...which will be possible by letting go of Jake (not that he's bad but it's time to move on), Martin (today or tomorrow I think), Hainsey walking and trading Marleau next year back to the Sharks after we pay his bonus. Liljegren will be a full time player in one year's time. Other teams will continue to be salty.

Islanders - I've spoken my piece before. Tavares owes you nothing, blame your inept management for failing to surround him with talent (could have had Nylander or Ehlers but you took Dal Colle. Could have had Mantha but you took Pulock. Could have had Lindholm, Rielly or Trouba but you took Reinhart) and really, 'he said he wanted to stay with us for life!' What's he supposed to say in that situation? 'This place sucks, you're all ugly and stupid and I hate it'? If you want loyalty get a dog. You had him at 5.5 for what, six years and couldn't do anything? Have faith that you had a good draft this year, and Barzal is a hell of an offensive talent who spells defense with a Q.

Montreal - Bergevin, the genius, used a 3rd overall pick drafting for need and not taking Hughes or Zadina like a normal person would. Even if they luck into a first overall in the next three years and call it a hunch I think they will, with Price making 10.5 and Weber already losing steps and paid until like '24-'25, they'll be our toilet for at least the next 4 years. The Mason trade was good, maybe could have sweetened it for better picks though.

Ottawa - Has their own issues to deal with, but hopefully they learn from the Islanders and trade Karlsson for something like two firsts, a young second liner with upside and a near ready impact prospect now. The clock is ticking. Also no, no one wants Bobby Ryan.

Buffalo - Is rightly nonplussed having just landed Dahlin, but if they wanna ball they better hope Mittelstadt and Nylander become players.

Tampa - Realizes they're now only slightly better than us on paper with a cap situation twice as nightmarish looming - seriously what do they do, next year, when they need to give Kucherov 10, Point 6, Gourde at least 3.5 and Sergachev 4? I also assume they'll keep Stralman (who I think would fit perfectly here), there's another 4.5. They have 4.4 in space today, Coburn and Girardi (6.7 combined) and a bunch of low money guys like Anderoff coming off next year, and even if they move Callahan (5.8) it's still not enough.

Boston - You were a fluffer.

Florida and Detroit - Don't seem to care much.

San Jose - If Couture, Burns and Pavelski were all five years younger I could have seen JT signing there.

Vancouver - Benning doing Benning things with the Roussel and Beagle deals, when Horvat-Petersson-Boeser is like a half price version of MNM.

Edmonton - Anticipating Draisaitl++ for Karlsson if he would go there, not that Karlsson isn't great but that's cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Winnipeg - They have the same playoff trophy as we do for not winning the cup this year.

Rangers - You are welcome.

St Louis - Did very well adding RoR and Bozak to their weak centre depth. With Tank, Schwartz, Schenn, Petro and Parayko (I'll take one of either of those), they're a dark horse cup pick, get on the horn with Vegas today while odds are still low.

In a year's time he could be. I am afraid the longer we wait the more we will inevitably have to pay.
ludicrous... Only way they blow out on money is if he wins the cup and art ross. You have to look at the body of his work when you award a contract like that. He'd have to be a 75 pt winger on the average of his rookie deal to get anything near 8+... Its just suicide to give a winger that kind of money and I seriously doubt his agent or our cap guys will be dumb enough to think the contrary.

Hall, MacKinnon and Gaudreau would all be considered to be on great deals now. Marner would see himself as an elite player like them, getting 8 per wouldn't be out of the question.

IMO, Pasternak and Ehlers are good players no doubt but not in that bracket.
