I would say the drama will/would be fabricated by the media.
They will post a picture of Matthews when he's not smiling and the headlines will say "Tavares getting the C puts a rift between Matthews and the leafs"

 pretty much.
like i personally feel it is important and they need to get it right, but i think especially when you have a handful of candidates, you're going to disappoint a lot of people. you just deal with it and move on, and it's not that big of a deal as we're making it out to be.

Any Leaf fans planning to burn their TyBo, JVR, or Uncle Leo jerseys ?
It's closer to Vince Carter leaving than any of those guys, and Raptors fans reacted pretty similarly from what I remember

Some Isles fans are going way overboard (like some Leafs fans did when they were sending death threats to Jake Gardiner after Game 7), and I'm sure some people will boo him for the next few games in Long Island or whatever but I think most of them will probably get over it in time.

why is there an eye roll.
Iginla wanted to be the captain. they gave it to Conroy instead.
then Iginla got to be captain anyway. do you remember hearing any drama how Iginla wanted to be captain and they didn't give it to him, oh noes? No. Why would it be here?

It's only drama if Matthews makes it drama, and quite frankly if he makes it drama then he's not ready to be captain anyway, so again. it's not an issue. Tavares is here. he's used to being captain. give it to him. let matthews develop in peace, when it's time to be all time for Matthews to be captain (should he want it) give it to him

Im sure you already heard, but according to Lebrun AM was involved in courting Tavares and is really excited. He's a pretty smart kid and I'm sure he knows JT may be named Captain. Ferraro said it best: good players want to play with good players. Everything else is secondary to winning.

Personally I don't see why it's such a big deal either. It's not like the team plays worse without a captain.
That said, after seeing Tavares speak, I think ultimately he will wear it because Dubas and shanny will want his cool well spoken thoughtful manner to represent the team.

You mean like how the Bruins stopped booing Kessel in a Leafs uniform? Oh wait...

I agree it's unacceptable in any circumstance, but even that was different. VC left after a conference final (I think) and consecutive playoff appearances.

Edit: actually, it's very similar to Bosh leaving the Raptors.

Yeah, if JT agonized over the decision as much as he claims to have, then I'm not convinced he wouldn't have stayed if the Isles were at least a playoff team, but between a mediocre on-ice product, all the front office and arena issues, etc....

What was the fan reaction like to Bosh leaving? I haven't really followed the NBA in years

I went exploring in the main board version of this thread. What a mistake that was.

Holy ass bananas.

What is it about the Leafs that gets everyone so freakin' pissy?

This all reminds me SO much of when Lebron first left Cleveland.

Their fans were burning his jersey, their own Dan Gilbert wrote that lovely piece that said CLE will win a championship before Lebron, fans were trying SO hard to convince themselves that Lebron was a loser (remember, he hadn't won a title at the time) and they will be better off, etc.

Fast forward....

Not only did we get the first laugh here, we will have the last as well.

Everyone on HFboards is now telling me that the leafs defence is atrocious and that Freddy Andersen is a below average goalie. How in the hell did the leafs end up with 105 points last season then?

I was just a little kid back then. What stung about VC leaving was the he went from scoring 15 a game in Toronto and not utilizing his athleticism to a 25 point per game guy with electrifying athleticism in NJ.
