Deal is fine for now.

Particularly since Dubas gave Matthews a 5 year deal.

Window to win will coincide with Tavares’ peak.

Deal will start to turn sour as skills decline. Hopefully that happens very late (or never) over the course of the contract.

Yes but look at the price we’re paying.

No defence or grit. 2 things that his cap hit we could have desperately used to address.

That's not because of Tavares. He scored 47 goals and was a huge factor last season.

The whole narrative of Tavares signing being the reason RFA were overpaid is ridiculous. If anything it should be leverage for the Leafs since they had other options on 1c besides #34.

yes RFA contracts are getting closer to UFA, but not nearly at the rate we have here in Leaf nation. But that won't prevent some from pretending there is no difference between UFA and RFA..

Ok let's assume we don't sign Tavares, who is the magical available 11M$ defenseman or those 2 x 5.5M$ Halftavares guys? Are we comparing actual signing with mythical players or we actually missed good UFA because of this ?

After it was clear Islanders won't be re-signing him, Boston was one of the real possibilities ( they asked Krejci to wave as he would have to be moved for cap to work for bruins).

Anyone would prefer John to meet us in play offs again?

Is everybody still loving this signing? I was against it from day one and it's looking like I was right! This deal is going to be bad! It might even be the reason this Leafs team never wins a cup.
This signing already stinks. Look how good the New York islanders are doing without him. They are a way better team without him. A lot of people are living in the past with his last season stats.

Hope this is sarcasm. Last season was like 20 games ago. Doubt that much has changed since then lol.

People actually think Tavares is the reason Marner and Matthews got overpaid? Tavares earned his contract being a PPG player over his career being on really bad teams for 9 years. All I get from that excuse is what people already say about them, they are greedy and care more about themselves over the team.

Reactions: Its not your fault
People keep throwing out Tavares’ point production last year, but seriously, is that the only measure of his $11 cap hit? Phil Kessel had a couple of 90 point seasons with this team, but would we sign him for $11 million. No. When he was here he was just a goal scorer who brought zero leadership. Please show me where, other than putting up points last season, did Tavares show leadership. Not in hits. He consistently ranks in the bottom third of the line-up. Not in clutch goals. That would be Matthews. Not in face-off percentage. That would be Gauthier and Matthews. He’s not a leader. He’s a humble nice guy when this team needs someone with the cahoonies to call out their team for bad play.

Agree with this. The deal is fine, right now. I do have my reservations about it down the road, but for the time being, JT is a really good center and those don't just go on trees.

We were very close last year, despite our coaches shortcomings. Without Kadri, and with an injured Hyman, we gave the eastern champs everything they could handle. We fell short, yes, but it's not like we got blown out. So the focus needs to what the hell went wrong between last year and this year. I believe it's coaching, and I believe with a coaching change and maybe some player tweaks, we can right this ship. Unfortunately I think this year is sunk, but it's not like we need to blow the whole thing up

Don’t look now...

Uhm, not so certain that hasn’t happened already.
Totally happening. I don’t Dislike Tavares at all, but look how slow he is now. He is almost invisible/non factor.

I said that before he was signed that Leafs did not need him and was not the right player. Our center depth got us 105 point the year before Tavares was signed. This signing in my mind was the start of this whole mess. The sad part is might too late for this team and this organization. All that with Dubas dumb moves and prehistoric coach does not equal to success in the next future. Me taking a break from Leafs this year is a blessing.

There has been a lot of complaining that what this team needs is grit and defensive play.

So, would you trade Tavares to the Islanders for Komarov and Martin (not that the Isles would likely agree)?

Kinda strange seeing all the opinions about how soft the team is and then at the same time ripping the signing of the one star player who actually doesn't play a soft game.

You mean if Tavares had signed with Boston? You’re kidding, right. We lost to Boston to last season, with Tavares on our team, remember.

I know, but that won't change the fact he would improve Bruins.

People really believe that JT's contract had no effect on Matthews' contract? Do you really think Matthew's would've been ok with making less than a player who he is better than that was brought in as a free agent to a team that was supposed to be Matthews' team?

Why would anyone want to trade Nylander to keep JT? The vast majority of forwards in the NHL have already started to decline by the time they hit 30, and if JT hasn't already lost a step there's a good chance it's going to happen soon. Starting this year or next year we could paying JT 11 mil to put up 70 points.
