That depends on the two players, who are you getting for 5.5 million?? That same offseason Bozak/JVR went for a combined 12 million, you want those two guys or Tavares?

Again, the problem isn't Tavares, it's what we've done after signing him

For sure.

And you didn't see my edit but I'm not disagreeing so much with the signing so much as saying it's a stretch to posit that $11 million on Tavares is the most optimum way to spend a finite amount of capspace.

I loved the signing when it happened but tbh I didn’t watch islanders a whole lot. In hindsight I see a guy who hasn’t won anything for the islanders, combined -42, and not the most vocal leader. Add more sand paper to the lineup and use the money for defence and I think Kadri could give us everything JT gives for much cheaper

I like having him on the team but you could argue that it led to our current cap troubles, where our young stars demanded they get paid more than their worth

All of those problems are the snowball effect of signing Tavares. Fans needs to stop living in last year. Yes he scored 47 last year but he's on pace to score 31 this year and that total will continue to go down year by year. The Leafs are also at the bottom of the standings due the acceleration of the rebuild the Tavares singing caused with a horrid cap situation. This deal is going to be one Leaf fans regret mark my words!
1.) The Matthews/Marner contract shouldn't have been impacted by Tavares. Matthews money isn't really all that bad, it's the term that is just atrocious, how did he get that from Tavares? Matthews' two comps (Eichel/Mcdavid, although yes I know mcdavid is much better) both got max term and Dubas should've made sure he got that too. Tavares shouldn't have impacted negotiations at all, and if they did Dubas should've told Matthews that he can use that comp when he's a 28 year old UFA.
2.) Trading for specifically Barrie wasn't due to Tavares. Trading Kadri was, but who we traded Kadri for is the issue. That's not on Tavares', it's Dubas who made the trade

The aftermath of what we did has hurt the leafs, not signing Tavares.

Your greed as a fanbase which extends and is reflected by the management has and will continue to come back to haunt you. "Rebuilding" nah f*** it let's rush the hell out of it... AGAIN.

Marleau signing - ridiculous
Boyle trade - ridiculous
Signing a million trial players to create artificial competition to "over ripen" prospects to maximise current year performance instead of letting them play, doing worse, but making use of the great farm system and having those players thriving in the NHL by now - ridiculous. By the way if you watch teams around the league this over ripen stuff is nonsense and you can't just copy the "Detroit model" to a tee, which hardly produced superstars from their over ripening aside from a few lucky draft picks who generally didn't even play in Detroit's farm system. If you want a bunch of average players, sure, go for it. Nothing pissed me off more during the past 3-4 years than the creation of way too much artificial competition instead of letting the kids play who were ready enough.

And a few more I can't remember right now.

Y'all are a very very greedy bunch with no patience and you'll pay the price everytime and will never learn.

Either rebuild or don't, screw off with this "accelerated rebuild" nonsense.

That's fair, to me it just all depends on what the cap is spent on and most of the time it's better spent on the superstar 1c

Who's to say NYI has the success they do right now? They wouldn't have had the money to sign some of their key guys. Anders Lee for example

They’d make room. They got 5M+ cap space. There was no need to sign Varlamov @5M

Lou would make room.
He’s not Dubas.

Anders Lee is not the reason why they have success. Not putting down Lee and his ~50 points.
But, it’s their coach.

The coach is a big part of it but you also need a proper team dynamic. They have skill, they have speed and a few other things we don’t.

As if there's no possible way $11 million in cap-space could be put to better use...
Who was available at the time that you would have spent money on, that wanted to come here? There certainly wasn't any better centerman available and from what I recall,no better player .

Without taking some random combination of contracts we never would of had a chance of signing (saying pasta at 6.6 & Seth Jones at 5.4) how else could this team of spent said space? Would bozak komarov and Gardiner been a better trioka of contracts than JT Spezza & Holl?
Getting a franchise level C for nothing but cap space and at fair market value is something every gm would sign off on

Wow Dave Chapelle.
It’s nice that you’re here and all but this Hockey humour isn’t working out man.
You’re much better than this.

the problem is not the star players it rarely is. The problem is they didn't surround the star players with complimentary types who handle the defensive side of things for them, and specialize at taking the puck away from the other team and putting it on their own star players stick instead. The leafs filled the support cast with more players who want the puck on their stick, even though they don't actually do anything special with it.

Is everybody still loving this signing? I was against it from day one and it's looking like I was right! This deal is going to be bad! It might even be the reason this Leafs team never wins a cup.
if we didn't have him

Mathews would be getting all the tough assignments.
at least we have two top centers.

I'm not disputing that.

If you want to believe there is no possible way we could have better spent $11 million a year than on John Tavares, that's fine by me. It's your opinion.

In my opinion, that cap-space could have been spent innumerable other ways as well, some of which may have had more of a benefit to this team.

I don't see anything controversial about that opinion.

I loved it too, but the more I see JT play, the more I'm not happy with the signing. He was good last year, but I just have this feeling that he's going to age fast.

Is it?

He's the best player on the team and one of maybe three guys who look like they give a general **** on the ice.

He is not the best player and he doesn't look like he gives a ****, he broke his stick after the Boston loss, that's about it. I'm happy with the signing because the alternative was retaining 2 of JVR/Bozak/Komarov not some fantasy defender everyone seems to think we would've nabbed, but JT has been one of our most disappointing players this year. I think he buys into boring Babcock more than most but he does absolutely nothing dynamically.
