Tomas Plekanec is probably the most successful Habs 3rd rounder of the 21st century.

Followed by Yannick Weber, I think.

If we go from 2000-2018:
Plekanec
Emelin
Weber
White
O'Byrne
Andrighetto
Harris (probably goes up to challenge Weber)
Fleury
Lernout
Vejdemo
Balej
Bitten
Hillis/Nattinen
Bozon
Fortier/Quailer/Crisp/Walford

From the 2019-2023:
Fairbrother is still in the air but more likely to be in the bottom 5 tier.
Norlinder is currently between Bitten and Balej, maybe could go up.
Kostenko likely to be at the bottom tier as I don't see him getting to NA and he seems to not be progressing that much as he's back in the VHL.
Rohrer I think could be anywhere from bottom to Weber at this point.
Engstrom is aiming for Plekanec. Would be surprised if he doesn't at least hit O'Byrne.
Fowler is too early to tell and is a goaltender, so could be last or first.

A lousy third? For 3.5m caphit? I'd rather have the extra 3.5m caproom.

1. Pearson cap hit is 3.25M.
2. We traded away a 1.8M cap hit so the difference is 1.45M not 3.5M.
3. This fixes the issue of having 3 NHL goalies without losing one for nothing.
4. There is a possibility of trading Pearson for a return.
5. We aren't competing this year, so cap space doesn't do much.

The only negative to this trade is putting a slight logjam in the forwards corps. Biggest effect might be on Ylonen.

So what are the move that need to happen so that we can be cap compliant before Price LTIR… now we have like 6M$ to move if we are only saving about a 1M$ per player going to the AHL is it really doable without any move? I’m thinking that having almost 10M$ in useable cap space is more valuable than Pearson and a 3rd

lmao how many forwards is this team gonna ice, i guess no forward prospects are making the team this year  (or at the very least at the start)

got a feeling Armia or Allen are getting moved tho, Armia would be the easier of the 2 (we have 1 spot left for a contract retention)

After last year, I think Hughes realizes sometimes circumstances (like last years multiple injuries) can change a team’s plans pretty quickly, sometimes it’s better to take the deal you have, rather than wait for the deal that may never materialize.

Especially when you’re dealing with an asset that’s not in high demand.

all true enough

I can see the Habs being compliant, putting Price on LTIR, then trading Pearson after a good pre-season to Washington for Mantha and a 2nd so they could sign Kane. But then, I can hardly imagine the comments on cap space on this forum, there's a limit to my unbridled imagination.

I would assume Price is going on LTIR. But some are saying we can get under the cap even without putting Price on LTIR.
Indeed that is Kent's goal. He even lied and blamed that desire for the terrible Petry to Detroit deal.

But now, after absorbing the Pëtry retention, and taking on Pearson's salary, we can no longer get cap compliant without waiving a valuable player or one of those useless vets we seem to be sworn to protect.

The 6,177,916 that we are currently over the cap is based on 28 players and we need only to ice 21 players at the minimum. Simply sending 7 players to Laval on paper will make us easily cap compliant. I expect Pearson and Armia to be waived as well, so it is a non issue.

The Petry trade was because Hughes didn't want someone here who didn't want to be here. Otherwise he would have hung on to Petry as an asset and not traded him when his value was so low.

I don’t have an issue with this trade. Seems like a good player who broke his hand and then his surgery got a bit botched by infection. It isn’t like his hand got obliterated like Galley’s hand. Ppl recover quite well from broken hands.

The one year off is more of an issue, but this a veteran of the game at only 31. I can see him moving around in the lineup if he still has passion for the game and is stoked on mtl.

Best case scenario he lights it up and gets flipped to a contender; or he becomes a mentor to our youth. Worse case is that he is waived and sent down to the minors.

Doubt Hughes will want to waive a veteran.

Not only it’s a rare occurrence around the league, but it also goes against what Hughes has been promoting since his arrival, which is treating players well and making Montreal a welcoming destination.

If he didn’t feel like doing it for DeSmith, I doubt he will do it with Pearson or even Armia.

If they send down Harris and RHP + 4 highest paid waiver-exempt players, they’ll be compliant before the deadline.
For what it was worth, it’s a good deal. 3rd round picks are good assets that Hughes use it for drafting, acquiring a player, getting rid of one or just upgrading his standing it’s better than nothing.

I would not call this plenty of cap space. The only way I see us making it work is to send as many waiver exempt players down as we can and get to a 21 man roster. Seems very tight but some options are there.

1st Image below:
* Moved Pearson, Kovacevic, Barron, Slaf to the AHL (temporarily)
* 21 man roster with $138k of cap space

2nd Image below:
* Moved Pearson to the AHL and Dvorak to LTIR (if eligible)
* 23 man roster with $1.9M in cap space.

3rd Image below:
* Moved Pearson and Barron to the AHL (temporarily)
* 23 man roster with -$1.5M in cap space.
